Never quite reaches the heights of its inspiration. It does look fantastic and its unique form of action is something to behold in the hands of a master player (not mine, unfortunately), but all those minor issues do add up, including a few framerate drops in certain areas. Iola’s adventure is still worth your time, but it’s not quite the great game it could have been.

Its combo approach adds a fast-paced environment to the platforming genre and it will surely stand out among other retro-themed games available on the Wii U's downloadable catalogue.

Olympia Rising has a beautiful presentation and neat elements to boot, but ultimately does a bit too little to bring excitement.

Olympia Rising is a good platformer, but in such a saturated genre it needs to impress more than in does. The characters, story and visuals contribute to the positives, but more care needed to be taken with controls and hit points to make the game less frustrating. There is much to be enjoyed if you are able to look past the negatives, and if that's the case with you it is a worthy addition to your library.

Controls are where I was most impressed spot on jump and combo system and you can hold to any walls making navigation pretty easy. Difficulty is being ridiculously exaggerated by some people, expect to do maybe 3-4 retrys to get through the first boss and from there it depends how good you are. Full Review »

However - and this is something I find curiously absent from the marketing - it is brutally, unforgivingly difficult. I am one of those 'old timers' who genuinely spent the 80's and 90's playing platform games and I took (no exaggeration here) THIRTY TWO TRIES to beat the second stage.

I have yet to beat the first boss.

The controls are mindlessly slippery, the platforming is excessively precise, and, basically - it's not a 'Metroidvania' at all - its just another Super Meat Boy or VVVVVV. Hard for the sake of hard. Except, in this case, the controls are nearly broken.

    Stay. Away.
