Luigi U improves the level design, difficulty, and gameplay mechanics to provide a more refined experience, while still retaining its ties to the original launch title. Luigi's higher jump makes the game more enjoyable to control and is better suited for the new short, fast-paced levels.

However, after a seven-month-long drought of first-party games since launch, this was the last thing the Wii U needed. The NSMB series was already incredibly stale, and Luigi U did little to change this. With all its assets carried over from Mario U, it's pretty much a rom hack of the original game without any semblance of originality. While it does stick out as the best of the post-Wii NSMB games, it does more so as the lesser of three evils than as the "new", original title the series needed. The Wii U deserved better.

Exactly what the NSMB series needed. This is questionable as its own game but it is a near perfect DLC.

I really enjoy the creativity put into the levels of this game, the budget was low and they didn't make much new assets, but they took advantage of the software and made insanely fun levels, an interesting new character, and an actually hard time limit. This is one of the best 2D Mario's I have played. Thank you.

This has no right to be better than the base game but it totally is. It's also much more difficult.

In 2006 this was a big event. New Super Mario bros. Wii is the first 2D Mario game with simultaneous 4 player multiplayer. It was reusing the assets and game design of the previous entry, which was smart. However, New Super Mario bros. 2 and New Super Mario bros. U have no excuses. You could argue that he 3DS entry had a nice gimmick. The game was much better designed than the DS one. The Wii U one is in HD and has the best level design out of all of these enumerated before but the series has gone stale and these games have become BORING. HOWEVER! There is a game that, for me at least, carries the series. New Super Luigi U. The most fast-paced game in the series, the game with the BEST level design, the best controlling game thanks to Luigi's physics (floatier jumps and slippery stopping). it's been released as DLC for the Wii U Mario entry so it's shorter. Thankfully it's only 20 bucks and you can find it as a physical release too. I really enjoyed the game and i recommend it to everyone. However, it's the hardest 2D New Mario game, but if you try, you will succeed. Also you can now play the game too in the Switch port of the full game New Super Mario bros. U DELUXE. PLAY IT! IT IS WORTH YOUR TIME!! Expand

An underrated gem that is objectively the best game in the series with it's genius and fun game design.
But because of the nostalgia demons, I still think the original is better.

God damn this game is good. It has the most inventive level design of the whole new sup series and the multiplayer feels great because of the differences between Luigi and nabbit. Luigi is floaty and jumps high which is a nice change of pace. The time limit makes every level a speedrun and it feels great. Most of the assets and the overworld are reused, and there aren't any new enemies or powerups. But the bottom line is that this game is great fun and definitely the most innovative out of all the games in the series except for the first. Just play it all ready. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. New Super Luigi U is great. It takes New Super Mario Bros. U and gives it the difficulty it lacked. The 100 second time limit (while rarely a threat) adds some intensity to the game and involves more creative level design than from Mario U. The Year of Luigi was very well celebrated here.

Luigi controls pretty slippery but that only gives the game more difficulty so much so that I find it more enjoyable than Mario U. The boss fights are the same so the final boss is great, Ludwig is good and Kamek puts up a good fight but every other boss is pretty pathetic.

While the main game is better than Mario U, Challenge mode is not included for the physical release which is disappointing as that means that for the physical release, the main game is the only mode available.

This game is very good but lacking extra mode.

When a new game gets "DLC," what do you often think that DLC is? A new level/weapon, a cosmetic change, or a small new game mode, right? A new level/weapon, a cosmetic change, or a small new game mode, right? Or, at most, it's a small expansion with a little of all of those things, right? Right. Not "New Super Luigi U," though; building on the formula from "New Super Mario Bros. U," "Luigi U" is a full-fledged game in and of itself, with 8 worlds to travel to, just like in "Mario Bros. U." And, admittedly, it's a lot of fun!
Being a slightly-different version of "Mario U," there's a lot to like about "Luigi U" from the jump: the gorgeous visuals, the polished gameplay, and the great level design. And with new "Luigi physics" (slippery movement, and flutter jump), the game feels pretty different. That, and it retains the fun and frantic multiplayer modes from "Mario U." That's a lot out of a simple "DLC expansion" but it's because of this that "Luigi U" shines.
Unfortunately, the game still feels awfully similar to "Mario U," and the difficulty has been jacked-up A LOT, to the point that newcomers to the platformer genre might want to start with something else.
Even so, considering all that it does as a downloadable expansion, "New Super Luigi U" is a nice, polished expansion and a solid addition to your Wii U library.

There is nothing that dramatically separates this from New Super Mario Bros U - Luigi controls a little differently and the courses are centered around speed runs - but it is essentially an expansion pack. That isn't a bad thing considering how fantastic the core game is. Who is going to complain about more of a good thing?

This DLC/Game is an amazing follow up to New Super Mario Bros U. It adds that extra level of difficulty that most recent Mario titles (Since the start of the 'New' Super Mario Bros Franchise) have been missing. As if New Super Mario Bros U wasn't good enough, this is a whole new level of greatness!

This was actually a DLC at first, but came to be its own game. Luigi's year is still going on and so, New Super Luigi U was made just to make you join his own adventures without Mario at all.

New Super Luigi U is one of the best DLC out there and manages to be a big challenge

    + Gameplay Mechanics
    + Level variety
    + 100 second rule
    + Luigi makes a difference

    - Two Toads
    - Nabbit is useless
    - Gamepad badly utilized

New Super Luigi U was an awesome challenge. At first i thought it was kinda easy, but as i played more and more, the difficulty started to appear. Collecting all the Star Coins was very fun and finding the secret levels was also. Its a joy to have local coop in the gaming industry today, and i dont think i wouldve made it though it without my local buddies. Try it, buy it, you wont regret it.

New Super Luigi U was released as an add-on pack for Mario U but is now featured in this compilation as basically a side game. Mario is not in the game at all. Instead you be Luigi, who has his floaty and fluttery physics from Super Mario Bros. 2. It's the same style as Mario U but there's completely new levels and the game is much harder. In case you're not an expert and you're don't like hard things (like me), you can play as the invincible Nabbit.

In New Super Luigi U, you only have 100 seconds to complete the challenging levels featured in the game. This makes the game not suited for multiplayer at all and this is one of the few games where I definitely wouldn't recommend it. No, seriously. I'm not kidding. It doesn't really give you much time to explore the levels as you constantly feel rushed but the game's fine on its own.

Overall, New Super Luigi U is great if you like hard games...or if you just want to play it for fun and be Nabbit. You're better off getting it as DLC for Mario U then as buying it in stores.

Just about every part of this DLC/expansion pack is incredibly well made, and Luigi really shines here.
