Monkey Pirates is meant to be played with people and it truly comes together when the right crowd gets together.

If you mix a good multiplayer and a poor single campaign you'll get Monkey Pirates. The two gameplay modes - with and without the Gamepad - are well executed and can guarantee much fun, but the game has limited ambitions.

Monkey Pirates is unique but somewhat limited, having only local multiplayer. Nonetheless, it’s a rewarding experience.

Monkey Pirates is a good local multiplayer experience on Wii U, but one that doesn't make the most of the bespoke functionality the system has to offer. Moreover, the game falls down in other key areas, such as a limited single-player mode and AI that is prone to breaking.

While Monkey Pirates does make an effort to become a fun and involving multiplayer game, its chaotic structure and strange construction are more bound to leave the players confused and uninterested beyond the first tries. Its lack of an online multiplayer mode and bizarre organization are impediments to what would otherwise be a rather entertaining title.

Monkey Pirates is competently made but thoroughly average in almost every way.
