I would just like to point out that I've never written a review here on Metacritic. But this game deserves this, and even more. I expected to like this game, I am a Metroidvania and platform game fan and the reviews seemed to indicate that this would be up my alley. I was gladly mistaken, this game has personality galore and a gameplay system that is entirely its own. What is truly remarkable is how polished the game mechanics are. The game can be hard, but it is never due to poor game design, just like the best Nintendo games.

I find it interesting that the negative ratings have not bothered to write a review, unless you are truly hopeless at platform games, there is absolutely no possible way to think this game is bad. The amount of creativity and hard work put into the level design and gameplay is astounding, and the guys at DrinkBox Studios are to be applauded.

If you like platform or Metroidvania games, or just great games in general. Don't miss this one, it's a triumph. It's a little short, but for a downloadable game at a reasonable price, you get way more than you pay for. And if you chose to get every item in the game, you will be challenged by some seriously devilish platform and combat challenge.

I had fun going through the world and picking up new skills and reading the story line. I had a tough time with some of the combos I practiced with the rooster, but overall I was able to put together some sweet combos after some practice.

I am 5 hours into the game and have not passed it yet. I haven't enjoyed playing this game in co-op mode but I imagine it makes it more fun.

If you are into games that make you laugh. that are visually pleasing, and that are tons of fun, then you can't go wrong with this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Playing Guacamelee STCE was a fun experience. As soon as I started the game I was drawn in by the art style and then shortly after the music. The gameplay started of simple but got addictive quickly as I got new ways to fight. The gameplay was very fun and whenever I turned on my Wii U I would only go to play it. by using a color coded system on enemies allowing them to only be hit by Juan's special moves that match that color added interest to the game. The variety of enemies was not too large but enough considering the short length of the game. As far as story goes it's somewhat disappointing and feels anti climactic. The story was about Juan finding his childhood friend and save her from being used as a sacrifice by the enemy who took over hell. In the end you stop his assault but your friend dies. That is not a good ending considering how light hearted this game was. The game was very colorful and although it did have death, they were not seriously impacting considering the music was always light hearted at the times of these deaths. Another flaw in the story was the chicken who teaches you how to turn into a chicken. He is revealed to be the devil who lost control of hell to the main antagonist of the game. After he helps you he is not seen again. I expected that after I defeat the primary antagonist I would face of with the devil who thanked me for returning hell to him. There was no such battle. Just a sad clip show ending of Juan loosing his friend. The game play did not have much of a replay value but was still incredibly fun the first run. It wasn't color coded like on the playstation version but it was simple enough to recognize combos. 8.1 out of 10. Which is pretty good for a $15 game. Expand

Fantastic art style (love Mexican art & their approach to the topic of death), light but nice story, very nice platformer - sometime you can sweat ;) and cool fighting systems, I've started to dig deeper with the combo system.

A small indie masterpiece. Hopefully authors will give us another great production in the future :)

There are a few things I'd like to add to my previous one as well.

The combat is amazing. Blending atracks, specials and throws all into a wonderful, flowing vortex of violene. The platforming is also genius, with the short invincibility dash and the dimension swap.

There were 2 complaints with the original game: too hard and too short. This version added 2 new areas and a boss, thus negating the short argument, and added El Intenso, an optional feature which temporarily made Juan fast and super strong. A fully upgraded El Intenso could TEAR THOUGH the final boss. If you still want a challenge, you can never use this feature, as it's optional.

With beautiful art, a great soundtrack, nuanced platforming, and gameplay that's both challenging and savagely addictive, all the ingredients required to make a truly great videogame are present and correct here. And with all the new STCE content — including the awesome Intenso power-up — DrinkBox's delicious scroller represents stunning value too.

So we now know that it's a great game, but how does Guacamelee! compare to similarly specced eShop titles from Wii U's rapidly expanding library? In a word, well. Exceptionally well in fact. It provides a stiffer, more rewarding challenge than fellow Metroidvania themed adventure, Knytt Underground. It's more expansive and packs in much more content than Ubisoft's gorgeous 2D quest 'em-up, Child of Light. And it's far classier and rounded than DuckTales Remastered. But perhaps most telling of all, for me it's even prettier than one of the very finest, most beautiful 2D platformers of the last decade — Rayman Legends! While I don't doubt that many will find that last statement particularly controversial, that doesn't make it any less true.

And similarly to the escapades of Ubisofts limbless mascot in his latest Origins and Legends adventures, DrinkBox has created a wonderfully playful and utterly gorgeous, toon-themed world that's every bit as wonderfully unique as it is beautiful to behold.

Whether you're fourteen or forty-four, Guacamelee! STCE is an wonderfully compelling and wholly essential download that represents eShop gaming at it's astonishing best. And if you hadn't guessed already, I simply cannot recommend it highly enough!

Metroidvania fans on the Wii U, rejoice: the e-Shop just got what must be the best title in the genre since the olds days of, well, Metroid and Castlevania.

Taking place on a colorful, vibrant, video-game-reference-filled version of the Mexican countryside, Guacamelee puts you in the shoes of Juan, an agave farmer who ends up transforming into a supernatural luchador. In the story, Juan has to rescue his childhood sweetheart, El Presidente's daughter, from the evil skeleton charro Carlos Calaca. What could be a boring damsel-in-distress story quickly turns into something else entirely, thanks to top-notch writing and loads of funny and interesting characters.

While the setting and storyline set the scenery wonderfully, it's when it comes to gameplay that Guacamelee soars to classic heights. You'll be treated to all the tried-and-true elements of Metroidvania games, including unlockable powers, special costumes, immersive exploration with loads of secrets and extremely enjoyable backtracking. True to the luchador theme, however, combat is its own thing here. There are combos, dodging, dimension-swapping and great implementation of every newfound power into the system. The overall game design is a thing of beauty, with every small element finding its rightful place among the title's many challenges.

Speaking of challenge, be prepared: this is a hard game that, unlike so many titles these days, doesn't cater to the lower common denominator. But like pretty much everything else in display, the learning curve is implemented astonishingly well, easing you into the requirements that come with every new power. There are plenty of checkpoints, too, meaning you won't have to replay entire sections just because you missed a specially tricky jump.

As the long subtitle suggests, this version of Guacamelee is one step ahead of the original that came to PC and Playstation 3 last year. There are massive new sections, including a flowering canal and an ominous volcano, both complete with new villages, NPCs, collectibles and sidequests. These are seamlessly integrated into the open-ended adventure, and seem to significantly boost the overall playtime (I finished the game in 9 hours, but needed a total of 17 hours to get to the true ending). Also incorporated in the core game here is the previously-DLC area of El Infierno, which, as a minigame-heavy section rather than a massive explorable one, is one of the game's few letdowns.

Guacamelee is a title that keeps surprising you all of the way, making it one of the best 2D exploration experiences I've ever encountered. There is even an especially juicy set of collectibles that only become available very late in the game, when you're already thinking the content is about to run out. 2014 has already been quite a year for the Wii U e-Shop, and Guacamelee is definitely one of its crowning jewels.

So if you haven’t played guacamelee before, this is the version to get…
This metroidvania took me around 6 and a half hours to complete and can be played with up to 4 player cooperatively…
After hearing so many great things I as excited to go back and play this game before guacamelee 2 came out, and boy am I happy I did…
admittedly guacamelee took so time to grow on me.. I didn’t instantly fall in love… at first I was a little confused why everyone loves it so much… sure the art style is nice and the game is full of humor.. But the gameplay, the platforming... it all felt super simple and button mashy… but as the game goes on it just gets better and better…
no 2 hours of this game feels the same… the game slowly spoon feeds you new abilities that are mostly for traversing, allowing you to go back to past areas if you’d like for its collectables to help upgrade your health or endurance, but these also double as combat moves for the challenging and constantly engaging combat moments…
the game increasingly gets challenging with both its platforming as well as with its enemies it introduces.. So you never feel like you’re just going through the motions... every minute of this game is engaging and keeps you hooked… there are costumes you can unlock to challenge you more or balance the character more towards your play style.. This is such a complete package from start to finish, a world that entices you to explore for its secrets, so many moments I would laugh out loud at the dialog, decently challenging bosses...
I actually felt like bosses were more of the time to relax and breathe before you’re thrown back out into platforming through this world… guacamelee is wonderfully placed and is a must play game for platforming fans or metroidvania fans alike
I give GUACAMELEE! SUPER TURBO CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION

This game was very fun for a while. The music and especially the art style and animation are enjoyable. The theology is quite fictional even though it borrows imagery from Mexico's Dia de los Muertos. At least the monk was a good guy and featured crucifixes positively.

For fans of Axiom Verge type games, there is a system of going back to parts of the map to reach collectibles and powerups once you've acquired certain skills. That part was enjoyable as well. For the most part, even the fighting worked well and incorporated certain punch styles and strategies against certain enemies. There was a degree of intellect involved.

However, where this game derails is in some of the ridiculous platforming jump sequences that really are just trial and error, I would think, for most gamers. There are so many occasions, especially toward the end, where you have to complete long sequences, ridiculous, precise button clicks at the right moment. That's just not enjoyable. It's a memorization exercise. Some of the boss fights get like this as well, where you just have to keep playing until you learn a pattern. It isn't so much intellectual as another tedious memorization exercise. Sometimes you can get stuck in stun-lock during a fight because the main character takes a couple seconds to recover whenever he gets hit. Some of the bosses can pin you to a wall and hit you multiple times and you can try to jump out of the way all day but you're stuck in "stunned" mode over and over. Also, he even if you try to jump or move *in time* of an opponent attack, he still has to finish his prior attack animation instead of just stopping it. It all results in having to replay the same sections over and over until you get it right. It resulted in just wanting the game to be over - which is not what a game should ever do.
