    This is how a platformer should be. Incredible level design with great idea and stunning attention to the details in the world. Donkey Kongs moveset is weird and clunky at first but is so fun when you discover all mechanics and know how and when to use dixie / diddy and cranky. Dixie works best most of the time though.     Way better than Returns, amazing music like all DKC games, and beautiful art and level design, with the charisma of the characters we already know and love. Just wish the next one would be a little more close to the old trilogy art and graphics style if 2d or that itd be a good 3d game that Donkey Kong deserves and doesnt have.

    In my eyes this is genuinely one of my favourite platformers. The developers really played around with so many ideas with the levels and characters. All the levels are so creatively designed and fresh, accompanied by incredible graphics, with David wise' amazing compisitions in the soundtrack.

    Arguably best multiplayer game ever released on Nintendo console, the game is simply a lot of fun and forces you to work together and think creatively for the results. The wiiU might have been lacking in games but the quality of them are among the best ever made on a Nintendo console if not any console.

    The game is so good! I love the platforming and creativity the game has! It looks so beautiful. The platforming is great because it's done so well. The environment interacting with the platforming really helps. I also liked the 3d angle to it as well. The bosses are hard but fun as well. Lastly I love how hard the music slaps.     One of the best 2D Platformers. In every aspect this game is great in the genre. Amazing stages, great music. smooth gameplay and an astounding world with astonishing visuals and environment with life. One of the best games on Wii U and in it's genre.

    i really tried to find a something to dislike in Dkc Tropical freeze. Once the first boss began, the game was a blast start to finish! best linear level designe in 2d platformers i ever seen, with not even one single level i would say it was bad or bland. All of this combined with one of the best soundtracks in game made by the great master David Wyse, in one of his best works. How the hell people could say this game is bland or "too haard" is beyond me. The developers at retro managed to find the perfect balance between dificult level designe and forgiving game designe. The game never, and i repeat, NEVER, kill you without any warning or not asuring that you knew what to do. if you died, is your fault, not the controls or level designe, it was you! and even than, you have a lot of lifes that the game almost throws at you, and various itens in funky's store, so you can have some help to deal with the levels, even if you're not that good or patient. Man i cannot stress enough how good this game is. Is not my favorite game, or platformer, but is definetively one of my favorite games of all time. Returnes might have showned that retro know how to designe a good 2d platformer, but Tropical freeze showed that they might be the best developers at this genre in the industry currently. As much as i love Dkc 2 with all of my heart, not even nostalgia can make me say that retro didn't surpaced that game with this masterpiece of a platformer.     If you're into intense platforming, look no further. This game gave us so many moments of rage quitting, which only lead to so many rewarding feelings as we progressed! Highly recommended to anyone who owns a Wii U.

    There was clearly an immense amount of heart and soul put into this game. It still retains its tight controls from Returns (minus the waggle controls that can alienate some people), with the most inventive level design in any game period. Not to mention being tough as nails, which I also enjoy.

    First of all amazing music even if it is greatly a remake of the stellar Rareware music.

    Great game overall with some criticism. Too difficult, scrapped usage of the Gamepad and lengthy loading times. After so much hype for the Gamepad by Nintendo you would expect the signature games of the console to make use of it, but no.

    Overall an 8.

    Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is simply the best 2D-Platformer I have played since Super Mario World. Every single stage is designed with passion and detail, every one has at least 1 level-exclusive focus, for example the sandstorm level from world 3. The Boss fights are all unique and more entertaining than the ones from DKCR. This game also has a really great Soundtrack: fromDonkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is simply the best 2D-Platformer I have played since Super Mario World. Every single stage is designed with passion and detail, every one has at least 1 level-exclusive focus, for example the sandstorm level from world 3. The Boss fights are all unique and more entertaining than the ones from DKCR. This game also has a really great Soundtrack: from beautiful underwater tracks in world 4 to catchy remixes of the rocket barrel theme from DKCR.
    Sadly this gem suffered from the poor performance of the Wii U, but hopefully the upcoming Switch version will compensate and finally give the game the honor, which it thoroughly deserves    … Expand

    I love 2D platformers and play a lot of them - this is hands-down the best one I've ever played. It's challenging, the levels have variety and brilliant design, and above all the character control is both fluid and dynamic (momentum rocks!). All of the levels are designed in such a way that they have exploration and collection aspects (puzzle pieces, secret exits, KONG letters) but alsoI love 2D platformers and play a lot of them - this is hands-down the best one I've ever played. It's challenging, the levels have variety and brilliant design, and above all the character control is both fluid and dynamic (momentum rocks!). All of the levels are designed in such a way that they have exploration and collection aspects (puzzle pieces, secret exits, KONG letters) but also every level can be nonstop speed-ran through for brutal time trials, which is just a blast to pull off. Retro studios hit another one out of the park, and this one might just top all their other work - incredible.… Expand

The levels in this game are just SO much more creative than the 2D Mario titles. We have Windmill Hills, Scorch & Torch, Irate Eight, Amiss Abyss, Meltdown Mayhem and Cliffside Slide as examples of gorgeous levels, whichTropical Freeze is my favorite game on the Wii U. It's easily the best 2D platforming game of all time, and is a massive improvement from the already awesome DKC Returns. The levels in this game are just SO much more creative than the 2D Mario titles. We have Windmill Hills, Scorch & Torch, Irate Eight, Amiss Abyss, Meltdown Mayhem and Cliffside Slide as examples of gorgeous levels, which offer a ton of creativity and difficulty. Many levels take like 10-15 tries to beat, and will cost you tons of lives in multiplayer. Bosses are also a huge delight, and Pompy, the first boss, killed me many times. The levels and characters are colorful and beautiful, the controls are tight and intuitive, and the gameplay is consistently engaging. Donkey Kong is a good deal more difficult than the Mario titles, which may be a welcome challenge for Nintendo loyalists.

    This game is amazing and is by far the best platformer on the Wii U, well clear of the Mario games available, and I would reccomend it to any player of any ability.

(Unlike Super Mario 3D World, where every level had its own gimmick, but the worlds didn't have every level sharing the same aesthetic).

    Everything is beautiful. Super, super beautiful.

    The reason for my mixed review score?
    It's just not quite as fun as my other games. I'm only on the 3rd island but haven't put the game back into the slot because all my other games are more fun, including some older Wii games.

    Also, the load times are ridiculously, inappropriately long. I suppose that's the biggest thing that turns me off from the game -- knowing that I'll be waiting a full minute or two between each level. The load times are worse than they are for Mighty No. 9, which was pretty bad on load times.    … Expand

    I rarely have the time to play a game as long as I want, but Tropical Freeze is simply this good that I played it beyond 100% which does not happen often, because many games don't motivate me like this and there is enough other stuff I could play in my little free time.

    I think the gameplay is still not getting stall cause every game had almost exactly the same gameplay but the game is still 100% enjoyable and entertaining.

    Amazing graphics, amazing level design, + probably the best soundtrack I've heard for a video game in a long time ! just get this game .

But maybe with the bump in gameplay speed/lack of lag will make it feel better. Just can't recommend this game and regret purchasing at full retail.    … Expand

    This is one of the best games I have ever played. Awesome levels and really fun bosses. The graphics are pretty cool and overall this game is a must-have for everyone who owes a WiiU.

    PRESENTATION: Colorful, well animated, great environments, 60fps, 1080p, fantastic music. Need i say more?

    GAMEPLAY: DKCTF plays like your typical DKC game, you can jump, roll, run, pick up things, etc, but now unlike in returns you get to pick between Dixie Kong, Cranky and diddy to have as your buddy along the adventure, but you still can't play as them unless you are playing multiplayer or hard mode. Each of this kong buddy's offer some new things to the table, diddy can let you hover for a bit, dixie gives you extra time in the air and Cranky can use his stick to bounce in pretty much everything, but to be honest no one but dixie is important, believe me when you play this game, you can tell that Dixie is BROKEN.

    The level design is top notch, unlike games like kirby or new super mario bros, where you can feel that the levels are created artificially with blocks (which is not a bad thing, i mean it works, but...), every level in this game feels natural and it nevers let's you say "why is this here?", the environments are great and have such an atmosphere that is just sooooo good and every level has 2 type of collectables that you can find in bonus rooms or in the level itself, first we have the puzzle pieces which can unlock concept art and the letters K, O, N, G, which if you collect in every world, you can unlock super hard levels.

    There are also some sections of minecarts and rockets that are actually pretty fun to play and not tediously frustrating.

    One thing that is a let down are animal buddies, once again only rambi returns as a playable buddy, and that is pretty sad. Oh and another thing that this game does great are the bosses, all of them are super fun to fight and when you beat you can give the a BANAAAAA SLAMA!!!.

    Overall this game is the best 2D platformer the Wii U, the music is great, the bosses are great, the levels are great, the graphics are great, and it's just a blast to play, tho this game is not for casuals, since this game is pretty freaking difficult, but if you like a good challenge then this game has you covered, with that said i'll give this game a 10/10    … Expand

    Old school gaming? Yes DK have that feeling that I remember when I first play DK Country on my SNES, challenging, with great graphics and lovely puzzles, DK is not for beginners, and if you are you might have some patience to finish this game, tons of secrets to discover and the real challenge is to accomplish game with 100% of goals and now is on Nintendo Classics so is cheaper!

    Solid gameplay is here with some challenging but always fair levels. Lots of unlockable content is also a plus. I'm sure fans of the series would have loved to have seen the Kremlings and K. Rool instead of the new ice nomads, but all things considered, the game is a worthy successor of the DK series.

    Near platforming perfection, Tropical Freeze is both a fun throwback to the original DKC series on the Super Nintendo and a jump forward with its silky smooth HD graphics and excellent music design. Fantastic co-op mode make this the Wii U's most well-rounded and fun platformer to date.

    This game is heaps of fun. Going on the train ride is brilliant and exciting as you try to complete the level. You can focus too much on trying to collect all the bananas and puzzle pieces or just try to finish the level. It is a highly polished game, however, the final boss battle is extremely tough. Perhaps too hard.

    Juego de plataforma de lo mas colorido y dificultoso que hay , me lo pase en 16 hs. No es un juego para niños como dice la e-shop de nintendo, es bastante dificil, podria venir con la opción de bajar la dificultad para los más pequeños. La historia es muy básica y las cinemáticas son pocas aún asi es un muy buen juego plataformero.

    DKCTP is visual masterpiece and makes for another fantastic installment for the series. It retains it's tough-as-nails gameplay that is frustrating but incredibly rewarding. The addition of Cranky and Dixies along Diddy is a very touch too.
    DKCTP may also have one of the best soundtracks for a game in a very long time.

The Unique Co-op play is a blast and the music and unique level design is as beautiful and fun as it is challenging and Intense. If you own a Wii U you need this game in your library!

    I've played this game a lot, and am enjoying it less every time I play it. Their idea of 'challenging' is deliberately killing DK in ways that nobody could possibly see coming over and over again. This means that all we do as the player is memorise their surprise death moves and avoid them, over and over again.     The platforming was terrible. I stopped having fun so I stopped playing the game. But the visuals are good and the sound is ok. There is no story at all which is partly why I was not having fun.

    Tropical Freeze does what it's Wii predecessor did, only better. It looks gorgeous, and the soundtrack is one of my very favourites on the Wii U, if not ever. The gameplay is very tight and the characters are enjoyable to control, the lack of waggle controls is very welcome too and my only complaint in this department is the grabbing controls are a bit fiddly, particularly towards the endTropical Freeze does what it's Wii predecessor did, only better. It looks gorgeous, and the soundtrack is one of my very favourites on the Wii U, if not ever. The gameplay is very tight and the characters are enjoyable to control, the lack of waggle controls is very welcome too and my only complaint in this department is the grabbing controls are a bit fiddly, particularly towards the end of the game when things get more difficult and intense.

    There's more than enough content here, just playing through the game took me over 10 hours and that was without collecting all the jigsaws and KONG letters, something which I probably won't be doing due to the sheer difficulty of the game as it is. If you were to collect all that stuff you're bound to be getting upwards of 20 hours of play from this thing.

    The levels are very varied and well designed, and I'm a fan of how they're quite long too. Concepts and ideas are rarely repeated too much and things are broken up nicely with mine-kart, swimming, and rhino levels which are all great fun.

    In terms of negatives I'd say the partner characters could have been a little different, and I found Dixie was your best bet most of the time meaning I generally just went with her. I'd also say that the bosses can be a little frustrating with them often being 10 or more minutes long and having no checkpoints. This did however give immense satisfaction when you did finally beat them! The game is perhaps a little too difficult in general (it's the hardest game I've played for a long time) although I enjoyed that it was challenging enough just to get to the end of the levels and you didn't have to collect everything to make the game challenging.

    Overall this is a superb 2D platformer, and certainly one of the must-play titles for anyone with a Wii U, just prepare yourself for plenty of deaths, this one is NOT easy.    … Expand

    This games just feels under-rated because it's "difficult" and that's clearly not fair when it's actually a master piece in terms of level design and gameplay !

    To sum up, if you like 2D plateformers, if you loved Donkey Kong Country or if you just want a great game (and are capable to accept dying not so casually), i urge you to get Tropical Freeze !    … Expand

David Wise has made music that perfectly fits the theme of every level, and very rarely (with Aquatic Ambience being an exception,) do these songs repeat. This is not just a clone of the Mario games. Tropical Freeze has a level of depth that Mario hasn't captured yet. People who didn't like it probably couldn't handle the difficulty. The difficulty escalates very quickly, but it just makes the game that much more fun for me. All in all, this is an amazing game that is reason enough for anyone to get a Wii U.… Expand

If Diddy was the only other one featured besides Donkey Kong, then it might have got a bit dull after a while. Dixie's easily the most best of the bunch. Funky Kong also appears in the game as the helpful item vendor. One of his shops can be found in all of the worlds and trust me, you'll be needing his items.

    That's where the difficulty comes into play. Tropical Freeze can be incredibly difficult but it's never completely unfair. Deaths are always the fault of the player, not the game. Everytime you pass something challenging, there's no prize but for some reason, you always feel like you accomplished something! Bosses are perhaps one of the best parts of the game. Sure, they're hard, but they're all cleverly designed, just like the levels themselves!

    Overall, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze definitely deserves a spot in your Wii U gaming library. It has fantastic level design, great bosses, an amazing soundtrack, and much more!    … Expand

    A great game with many new features. The background is very detailed and lush. Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is also very innovative with how the background takes some part in the actual game. It is a perfect game for the Wii U.

    Best platforming I have seen in 2014. Great graphics, pst, and level design. However, if they spent a little bit more time finalizing, the game would be near perfect.

    Much better than DKCR the levels seem more diverse than before and the soundtrack is fantastic plus the bosses are more likable than in returns. Plus the game is still as hard as ever.

    We are living in a new era of 2D platafformers and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze its one of the "Must Have" in this generation. A classic concept, with classic characters with a new face that makes a fresh experience. If you enjoyed the Wii version, you are going to love it!!

Every level is memorable and has something unique about it. Even some of my lesser liked levels have something unique. Be it the design, visuals, music, or atmosphere.     An extremely beautiful game with great controls, fun & challenging an absolute must have for wii u owners. The game can get tough but never to the point that you want to stop playing, it's challenge makes you want to play more & more. Nintendo has great games & this might be on top of the list.

    If you could ask 100% of DKC Classic fans what game they would want 0% of them would say something so amazing as DKCTF, or tropical freeze for the intimates.

    This game, for me, is the game of the year, to summarize:

    Good:

    Each level feels unique
    So many collectibles
    High value of replay

    The game was enjoyable but the difficulty seemed to rely too much on throwing new elements at you without explaining them. Earlier Donkey Kong titles didn't have the trial and error feel that this one had for me.

    I feel like this game is under rated it is at least as good as 3D world. It is probably the best platformer of this gen

The games in the series have always been based in rescuing the treasure of the Kong family, called "bananas", or, redeem and save some of the hands of K.Rool Kong. But this time, Retro Studios has a small innovated, since the plot is based on a certain invasion. Donkey KongFor those who've played the others in the series know that the plot of Donkey Kong Country was never very exquisite. The games in the series have always been based in rescuing the treasure of the Kong family, called "bananas", or, redeem and save some of the hands of K.Rool Kong. But this time, Retro Studios has a small innovated, since the plot is based on a certain invasion. Donkey Kong is celebrating his birthday happily with his grandfather Cranky Kong, Diddy Kong and his nephew to Diddy's girlfriend, hairy Dixie Kong. It is then time to blow out the candles, come to the fore the plot enemies, the fearsome Vikings.     Yet another great game from Retro! This game improves upon the Wii game in every aspect. Graphics, characters, sound, music, level design, and controls are spot on. This game is a challenge though. If you are easily frustrated from failing then this game may not be for you. If you are up to a challenge though, you will be rewarded with an excellent experience. The think the best thing about the game is the level design. There're challenging but never cheap. when you finish a level with all the collectibles you feel a great sense of accomplishment. One level that stands out is a Savannah like level where you're actually trapped in a tornado. You jump from one piece of debris to another piece of debris while being tossed through the storm.     If you felt New Super Mario Bros. U was too easy, this game is a must own. Everything from the level design, bosses and soundtrack are expertly crafted. Especially the soundtrack! David Wise (who also composed the music for the DKC games on SNES) has crafted an amazing soundtrack for the game. He still hasn't lost his touch.

    The next generation of Donkey Kong is a solid platformer for the veterans. The difficulty level is straight from the nineties and the game doesn't give any slack. It's an thrilling adventure that frustrates at times, but on the other hand, it gives you a true sense of achievement. With these kind of games Nintendo will survive, no matter what the analysts say.
