There are JRPGs that age well, and then there are those that don't. Xenoblade is one of the latter.
This game might have been mighty impressive on Wii, and pretty neat on WiiU.
But its well past its prime on Switch. The tired level design, the lack of interesting detail, the endless fetch quests that give no real rewards and so on. Its all just too PS2 era, and not in a good way. And

And the 'acclaimed' music is pretty horrid, and far cry from the great soundtrack Baten Kaitos had. And the remastered soundtrack manages to be even worse!
But I think the worst bit is the lack of atmosphere in the game world, and the unconvincing, cliche'd characters that lack depth.
This is one of those 'essential' JRPGs that you can safely pass without having missed anything essential.

I think the game was overhyped for me. I played the second instalment first, and when this was announced as a remake I had a lot of excitement for it. If anything, after playing this one it has made me want to replay the sequel even more! I still haven't fully finished it (have like 2 more hours based on what I read on wiki) but its so hard to pick it up as the core gameplay loop simply is not as enjoyable as it was in the sequel. Was great at the beginning but got boring later .Didn't like the combat mechanic which is very complicated. Sometimes complicated fighting mechanics get good later on in the game but not in this case.common cliches like power of friendship, gods, not killing any enemy really got on my nerves

I saw lot of people suggesting playing this after BOTW to get another epic adventure but with RPG mechanics. I wanted a better story since BOTW is lacking in that area, and obviously this game gets high praise for its story. I generally enjoy RPGs and recently played FF XII: The Zodiac Age and it really grew on me, so I was open to this more MMO-type battle system.

I was impressed by the world, and the strategy of the combat intrigued me. The voice acting and cutscenes were pretty impressive, and the story seemed quite interesting. Unfortunately, on my second session of playing the game, I found myself dozing off while playing. I figured I was just tired, but then it happened during another session, and then another.

I still haven't figured out what was so boring about this game. The quests just feel like running from checkpoint to checkpoint on your map. There is no rewarding feeling of discovery from the quests or in the items you get. I would get new weapons/armor and it would make me stronger but there was nothing exciting about getting a new weapon. Sometimes it felt like they were too OP. One weird thing for me right away was that I couldn't use a potion or anything to heal myself in or after battle like a typical game. Your health just restores completely about 5 seconds after battle. So the game seems to be less about using resources to surviving your journey, but rather just about surviving each individual battle encounter. I don't know, this was just weird to me and took away a lot of the challenge.

I put this game down about 15-20 hours in. I know people say that you have to give certain games more time than that, but I just didn't have the patience. Nothing hooked me.

The main game is already a must play, but the new content is also a great adition.

Future Connected, the Epilog to the main story:
The map is as beautiful and grand as expected from monolith soft. The music, as immersive as expected from a Xenoblade game. The quests, as fun as aspected and the story, not as grand because it's (naturally) only a fraction of a Xenoblade game in terms of length (DLC size, about 10 hrs or 15 if want to do every quest), but you can see the love that went into this. It's great. Play it.

However, many quality of life improvements has made this game more playable than ever. Modern gamers can enjoy this classic: surprisingly released near PS4's controversial 'blockbuster', The Last of Us part 2. Both are similar in that they are narrative driven games, albeit in a different genre. Yet, audiences loved this game more whole heartedly. Why? In this era of 'Covid 19' pandemic, Nintendo games give you a sense of hope and joyfulness: of seeing epic environments now brought to true HD; of optimistic 'heroes' such as Shulk and Dunban. That is why Nintendo (and Monolith software), despite its 'creaky' graphics seemingly triumph over its competitors. Expand

Since everybody else is talking about its greatness, i will focus on those weaknesses:

    - The resolution in handheld mode is unbearable
    - The game is very grind-heavy, while at the same time, grinding doesnt feel especially rewarding, and is generally too slow
    - The story is pretty clichee (personal oppinion), and didnt catch me
    - The world feels sterile: You cannot enter houses, collectables are just blue balls, and enemies just stand or walk around, and wait for you
    - The presentstion is too "asian", and not mature
    - Most important: The character developement and the battle system are uninteresting, and become repetitive fast

In the end, it is a good remaster of a (once) very good, but very clunky game.
It absolutely is a game worth playing, but it still leaves too many weaknesses, to be the true definitive version of the game...

Personally, i didnt enjoy it to the end, and just beat the game to finish the journey. And, although i absolutely am a completionist, i skipped many quests and exploration, and wont do a new game+...

Im rating XCDE with 8.4/10 points

Where the game did not shine for me is in the combat. I have to say I am not a big fan of the MMO-style combat to start with, but here in the mid-to-late part of the game, there is just too many enemies and combat becomes extremely tedious. The main character also essentially stops learning new arts pretty early on so it feels mostly like more of the same for a very large chunk of the game. The foresight moments are also too frequent and break the battle momentum. Luckily this version of the game has a Casual Mode that can be selected if things start feeling too tedious and it greatly helped for me.
    I would overall recommend!

A future connected is NOT a good story, the explanations are poor and there are not twists. The only interesting character just disappear to die in an absurd way during a sidequest, something that makes no sense for me. Being on a standard definition console, the game always felt like it was trapped in time on a platform that itself was past it's prime. It made up for it with a compelling story and characters and top-notch art direction.

The game saw a port to the 3DS which was a technical showcase but ended up feeling like it was in the same boat as it's Wii predecessor. It was on a platform that was on in years and being exclusive to the "new" 3DS limited it's audience somewhat.

The definitive edition arrives on Switch with new character models, improved textures, and remixed soundtrack. But do all of these bells and whistles truly make it the definitive version?

Visually the game is an improvement, however, being stuck with a dynamic resolution that is sub HD in portable mode kind of detracts a bit. You're going to have a resolution between 378-540p. In docked mode, the resolution can range from 504p-720p.

The remixed soundtrack is great but never fear, the original is here too if you prefer.

Gameplay has seen some notable improvements. Abilities that have positioning requirements now alert you with a blue exclamation point when in place. Quests are far easier to track now as well which makes the game flow much better.

One of the additions I appreciate the most is the inclusion of an event theatre to watch all the gorgeous cutscenes over again. This allows you to experience the story again in a more passive fashion without having to replay it all. It also allows you to refamiliarize yourself with the story should you have to come back to the game at a later date.

With the resolution being the only discernable drawback? It never looks particularly bad on the portable screen. The art direction is still on point here and with all the enhancements, it truly does make for the definitive edition...or at least until Nintendo decides to re-release it again.

The only drawback to the game is how much time the player needs to invest.

The only drawback to the game is how much time the player needs to invest. Unfortunately, Xenoblade Chronicles is not a smooth progression, as the difficulty heightens severely near the end. Expect to spend HOURS of grinding. However, this can be bi-past by using the 'Casual Mode' option, which I utilized, because I had already invested over 70 hours into the game. That took a lot away from the experience for me. Why a party of three characters at level 75 can't bring down an enemy at level 78 is confusing. It was a huge disappointment investing all that time to just blow through the finale on Casual Mode, because I felt i had no choice.

There are so many great things about this game, but what I absolutely loved the most are the characters and their relationships with each other. They’re not over the top or following any sort of trope, and the developers absolutely nailed them as this down to earth group of friends with no fluff to them. Aside from that, yeah, the game is just fantastic. Combat is straightforward but technical, environments are beautifully crafted and visually stunning, the story is heartfelt, and the music is absolutely phenomenal. Not only that, once you’ve gotten through the main story, there is more to enjoy in the Future Connected extra story.

There are a few things holding it back, but they’re not anything significant enough to detract from the game. Gear management and quest tracking might be a little unintuitive, and some of the party AI may not be the best. Does it break the game? Certainly not, and these small flaws can easily be overlooked.

I can’t believe I never got to experience this gem until now, but I am certainly glad I got it to experience this remake. I’ve put in 120 hours into without even coming close to completing everything. I see now why this game is adored by so many, and I cannot recommend Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition enough.

With Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, Nintendo and Monilith bring the Wii classic to the Switch. With revised graphics, new setting options and a brand new epilogue, the first part of the series can offer JRPG fans in particular a few hours of gaming fun. A slow start, some mechanics of the combat system and the rather outdated graphics can be safely ignored in view of everything else.

I have always heard good things of it, however the sequel never really appealed to me, because the character models seemed a bit too excessive for my liking to take the game serious. I didn’t get that impression from the first game though, so I decided to give it a try – and I’m glad to have made that decision.

One of the first things that surprised me was the size of the world. Just exploring the first area in the game – Colony 9 – can take about ten hours if you take your time, talk to the npcs and do some optional side quests. The great thing about the npcs is, that they aren’t just random people who have one or two lines of dialogue, most of them actually have personality. To keep track of them, the game notes these people in the so-called affinity chart, where you can look up, which people you have met along the way and how they relate to each other. These relations can even change, if you decide to do specific side quests, which makes the npcs even more realistic. That feature alone makes talking to npcs much more interesting and kept me motivated to talk to every person on my adventure. This one might be a bit unfair because the base is already ten years old, however I think the world itself might be a bit static, compared to modern open world games. There just aren’t that many things you can interact with, besides some buttons or crystal deposits. (Maybe I’m just spoiled with Breath of the Wild idk)

Despite there being some side quests, which are interesting and have their own little story, there are also a bunch of them, which feel like filler. Quests, which require you to slay certain monsters or collect materials, that don’t have a impact on anything can get a bit tiresome at times, but at least you can use the gathered loot, if you stumble upon more interesting quest. However, that doesn’t make them feel any less dull given the amount there are.

Getting used to the dynamic combat system in Xenoblade isn’t an easy task. I found myself overwhelmed several times in the first few hours, since you simultaneously need to select the type of attack – so called Arts – and move your character, because the impact differs depending on your alignment towards the enemy. However, if you get the hang of it, it’s really satisfying and engaging. In fact, I don’t think I have spent this much time adjusting the equipment of my party members in any other game. That’s probably due to the gems you can additionally equip your party members with, which not only enhance basic stats, like attack or defense, but also more specific properties, like attack speed or spike damage. It just adds a layer of variety, which I haven’t seen yet in an RPG yet. Because of how addictive the combat system gets, I never had to grind additionally. If anything, I had to use the expert mode, which has been added in the remaster to lower the levels of my party members, since I tended to overlevel at times. The great thing about that mode is, that you can store the earned EXP and use it later to level up your characters at will. That’s not the only quality of live improvement the remaster has added though. Quest tracking is also more clear and simple now, as the path to the objective gets marked on the minimap, which I really appreciate, because there’s no way you would remember the location of every enemy or item on your own.

I won’t talk much about the story, because it’s at its best if you don’t know anything about it. However, I will say there are some moments, which got me quite emotional and I didn’t expect the plot to take the path it did. All of the characters really grew on me, thanks to their well written dialogue and surprisingly solid english voice acting. I also liked the heart-to-hearts, which give you an insight into the relation of two characters.

At last I want to address the graphics and soundtrack of the game. Most of the time I played in docked mode and didn’t spot anything I would consider plain bad looking, except for some noticeable clipping issues with the character models. While the in-game animations can look a little bit dull, the rendered cutscenes look great in my opinion, as well as the entire soundtrack.

To me, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is like a good book that you just can’t lay down. It’s a great game, with an really interesting and engaging story, likeable characters and surprisingly addictive combat system. I definitely don’t regret this two-month long journey and recommend it to everyone, who likes either JRPGs in general or just wants to experience a captivating adventure.

Different systems were implemented and streamlined gameplay wise as well making the ease of access to playing much easier. Really this remaster is bordering on the line of a remake with just how much has been changed and added, and only in the best way. Even if you've already played there's enough content to warrant a replay, and that's speaking as someone who put 150 hours into his first playthrough five years ago but never quite hit 100%. This time around I finished every single side-quest from the pool of 400+ and finished every achievement trials, so finishing the journey meant even more to me the second time around.

An amazing and emotional journey, a perfect cast of characters, a fantastic soundtrack, and now even an extra add-on game with a whole new area to explore with new characters adds a cherry to the top of a perfect treat of a game. I did kind of rush through it so take what I’m about to say with a grain of salt. I thought the story overall was good BUT I felt for the better half of 10 hours in the middle of the game the story just kind of falls flat. The beginning is really good and the ending is really good but the middle portion just felt like a chore. I did not even do many side quest because I wanted to quickly get this game done so I could go and try to beat Xenoblade 2 and Xenoblade 2: Torna before the release of Xenoblade 3. (Side note: I started playing Xenoblade 1 at the beginning of May.) The combat is really fun and rewarding but in the middle I just got so sick of it because that’s all I was focusing on because the story wasn’t doing it for me. So by the end of the game I was kind of sick of the combat. It’s a fun game just don’t try to rush through it like I did because I think that is what ruined it for me. Xenoblade is one of those games in which you need to be convinced to start playing it. But once you do, you are into it wholeheartedly.

This game and this series in general is great, in my opinion, a masterpiece and is the best the series has to offer.

I’m new to the Xenoblade series***

I have put more than 15+ hours in the game. At first I was not a fan because of the combat mechanic but then it grew on me. Combat is fast paced, fun, and tactical. Your decisions during battle are important. Very fun and challenging. The story is awesome so far and the dialogue flows together. It’s always cool when Shulk is having a vision. You feel

You feel immersed in the world and involved in the story when playing. The graphics are good docked although the models move in a fashion similar to previous generation games. In handheld mode the game suffers graphically. The music is superb!!! From beautiful arrangements to hype battle music that keeps you pumped!

    I highly recommend this game!

This game is a prime example of why art style will always be more important to me than graphic fidelity. Along with the amazing visuals, the story is simply incredible. My favorite game of all time. For your own good, play this game.

Brilliant game, with a few minor gripes. The story was breathtaking, combat wasn't my personal favorite but it was serviceable. The environments are detailed enough coming from a Wii game. The soundtrack is amazing, graphics definitely have some of the Wii version that still shines through, but it's still a great game.

Great game! (Played for about 100 hours - didn't finish all side quests)
Kinda typical JRPG story beats but there are some really good twists toward the end.
Not a massive amount of character progression but the interesting overarching story makes up for this. Combat can feel a little slow to start with but becomes quite complex as the game moves forward. Visually it it really

Visually it it really impressive. Some of the backdrops stand up to a modern AAA game. Nearly everything you see you can explore. One of the towns that is built into a tree later is particularly fun and appealing design.
Only thing that I would say lets is down is the massive amount of generic side quest padding. Even one of the main side elements that you will continue to work on throughout your play-though is a glorified fetch quest for items.

Should defiantly play if you are a fan of RPG's in general.

Xenoblade DE is a fantastic game. If you haven’t played the Wii or 3Ds version yet, this is a must have. The graphics are much better than in the previous versions and the future content is a nice addition to a brilliant game. Positives:
    - good art style
    - good characters - fantastic big world - amazing soundtrack - good combat system - good graphics - future content - difficultly Settings

    negatives:
    - grinding in the ending game is needed
    - Jump ability in the game is useless
    - maps aren’t unlocked, you have to visit every single place to have a complete version of an areas map

I really enjoyed this game, brilliant story, really good game. Problems are mostly quality of life things, so not that bad. I recommend this game to any RPG fan, Xeno fans, gamers who like discovering a big world or following to a great story.

    Pros
    - Story is great
    - Music is amazing
    - Exploring is fun
    - Character is interesting

    Cons
    - Combat get sloppy and repetitive after awhile (for me, after 40+ hour)

    Summary
The story and character really helped me finished this game. If not for this, i might have dropped this game similar to Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

A genuinely good JRPG that has almost nothing wrong with it. I would highly recommend for fans of the game that couldn't buy the Wii version because it was overpriced, or the New 3Ds version cause nobody bought the system.

You may feel overwhelmed with the sidequests but they're that, sidequests. You can just ignore them or pick them and complete when you feel like it. This version also includes combat challenges with glamour gear rewards.

If you like JRPG you'll love this game for sure!

The story, world and characters are absolutely amazing, the gameplay as expected was super fun and engaging and has kept me busy ever since i picked it up there are many side quest's, unlockables and places to explore and discover as expected from a game in the Xenoblade Series that will keep you engaged and playing even after completing the main story, there is also a bonus epilogue game exclusive to this remaster that takes place after the event's of the main game that expands the story even further which made an excellent addition to this amazing game. regardless If you are someone like me who never had the chance to play the original release or If you are someone who played the original release I would definitely recommend picking up this game this is an amazing open world story based RPG and it absolutely lives up to it's title ''Definitive Edition'' Expand

AMAZING! , this game is like an MMORPG but for a single player.

I like playing MMORPGs, I am a fan of FFXIV, playing through solid plot while exploring new areas and completing side quests, drop items, gem crafting, different gear, area unique bosses, ....... etc. I played without seeing any reviews or trailers, People are praising the game so I gave it a blind shot, glad I did

    This game is a masterpiece.

It's definitely one of my favourite games for many reasons. The world you play in is expansive and immerses you into the game. The sound track is AMAZING (listen to "you to you will know our names" and I doubt you won't want to start dancing). And the combat is really fun once you get the hang of it. My only complaint is that the character models aren't amazing. A lot of the time they don't look like they are actually speaking, more like doing a **** lip-sync to somebody talking. But the rest of this INCREDIBLE game makes up for this small flaw that didn't even bother me that much, which is why this game's score remains a 10.

In summary, this my favourite JRPG to date and i hope that it will become yours as well!

    + Musik
    + Atmosphäre
    + Story
    + schöne Levels
    + kurze Ladezeiten

    - eintönige Nebenquests (tu dies, sammel jenes)
    - Clipping-Fehler

Für ein Nintendo Switch Spiel sehr ansprechend.

Xenoblade Chronicles is still one of the best games of the genre, which 10 years later continues to delight and surprise with a unique world, luxurious epic landscapes, an incredible sense of freedom, beautiful music and a really interesting story. Of course, it is a pity that the Definitive Edition has a technical limitation in terms of resolution, which does not allow the image to really shine in 2020, but otherwise it is a chic project that every fan of the genre of adventure and Japanese role-playing games should play.

It’s hard to believe this is a game that released in 2012 and not more recently. Though there are some dated and heavy systems, the atmosphere and a combat system that gives freedom and depth make Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition an RPG for the ages.
