This game is OUTSTANDING and puts Final Fantasy 7 R into a shame. If you like RPG(not only jRPGs), this is a must have. Story is a top-notch, music the best in any video game imo(and I have played Nier) and battle system is surprisingly fun. I didn't expect that. Views are also impressive. This is one of these "life games"

The voice acting and story remain phenomenal, the character development and story development are some of the best I have ever experienced in a game, and of course the environments are the crown jewel.

There really isn't much to say when it comes to this version of the game. It manages to clearly be a love letter to the die-hard fans while, at the same time, it tries to become as appealing as possible to a new demographic: Switch owners and newcomers of the franchise (people who played either Xenoblade Chronicles X and/or 2, but that didn't have the chance to check this one out). The updated graphics and nice additions in the quality of life department brought an already impeccable Wii game even closer to perfection. The revamped OST is definitely nice too but the real goat here and what you could say that it was utmost necessary is the new look that Monolith Software gave this game.
There's absolutely no excuse now for you to not give a chance to this underlooked JRPG gem from the last generation of consoles. Lastly, I can only hope that you're really feeling it and having a Reyn of a time while playing it.
And remember, just as you can't have a rainbow without Reyn, you can't truly know the taste of the modern JRPG's formula until you've played Xenoblade Chronicles.

The OST is legendary, every hype scene has the right track, environment music put the right atmosphere.

The battle system has i said, once you get it, is not only deep and engaging but also fun, with each character having is own niche.

The definitive edition polished the game with better marker for quest to make it smooth, better IU, a new challenge mode, new difficulties, to make the experience better more engaging and fun.

This game has mystery, a very long engaging story, it's fun, and as far as JRPG can go this one just check all the good stuff that SHOULD be there.

I went in with extremely high expectations but can't help feeling some disappointment. This game initially released in the west in 2011 during a time when jrpgs were going through a lull. There was a shift towards more linear action focused jrpgs so receiving a big game which allowed so much freedom was a blessing at the time. Does the game hold up? In some ways but it's definitely aged.I went in with extremely high expectations but can't help feeling some disappointment. In some ways but it's definitely aged.

It's very nice to see a classic jrpg get so much love but you should keep in mind that the ridiculous number of 10 out of 10 reviews here were posted on May 29th, the day the game released. Most of these people did not actually play through this 80 hour game in such a short timespan and from what I've seen on YouTube the fanbase for this game... they might be looking at this game with rose tinted glasses... there's a very real chance you'll play this and realize it doesn't live up to the hype.

    Pros:
Large world with an excellent concept. Exploring enormous dead creatures and seeing a giant sword in the distance is very cool.
The story is well written (although it's a shame that people post spoilers in youtube game review videos)
The gameplay is a lot of fun.
    Updated UI.
    Quest tracking has been added
I haven't tried it yet but it's nice they added new story content
Rebuilding colony 6 takes a lot of time but it's fun seeing it develop.

    Cons:
The environments have received an update but not a significant one. Most of the places you'll visit are nice but they don't have that wow factor.
Some of the characters don't receive enough development.
The voice acting is ok but could be much better. You can tell the actors were recorded separately. It doesn't feel like they're actually talking to each other.
Riki is very annoying (most jrpgs have an annoying character like this but he's one of the worse examples I've seen).
Sometimes after a cutscene your party has been changed for no reason so you might run into a fight and realize you don't have a healer anymore.
The sidequests are dull repetitive fetch quests or kill quests. There are no cutscenes and there's no story here. Unfortunately completing them is really important for levelling and gaining new gear.
    The game is very grindy.
RNG is pretty frustrating at times. A lot of quests require you to gather items but every item appears as a blue orb so there's a random chance of getting the item you need. Or sometimes you need to fight a monster but they only appear during thunderstorms... have fun changing the time in the menu for the next ten to fifteen minutes while you hope for a thunderstorm.
The secret areas don't have any secrets. There's no cool weapon or armor piece just more blue orbs and some xp.

Overall I think this game deserves a 7 for its combat and story. You should keep in mind that this game released in Japan in 2010. It's a decade old game and it was a new IP so there are flaws. Don't let blind fanaticism convince you it's perfect. This is a long padded jrpg which looks dated even with the visual upgrade. However, the story is worth experiencing even if it does get a bit silly at times.

I have an enormous amount of respect for the creator. Moving from xenogears to xenosaga and now the xenoblade series he's been making quality games for a very long time. Personally I think Xenoblade chronicles 2 is a much stronger entry though and that makes me really excited for what's coming next.

I found myself liking Fiora a lot more than I did in previous versions due to her new facial expressions. The updated visuals convey a sense of child-like innocence that was lacking in previous versions. This makes it easier to relate with the characters on a human level and thus, sympathize with their struggles and hardships a little bit more.

Beyond the visuals, there are some great quality of life changes here, too. My personal favourite is the new ‘expert mode’ that allows players to collect reserve exp which they can use at any time to level up OR down. This allows a completionist to discover landmarks and complete side quests without turning the boss fights into a joke. I also love that we have 3 save files plus an auto save. Why X, 2 and Torna have only 1 save slot is beyond me.

If I had one complaint, though, it would be related to the unintelligible art use of the AI. Don’t expect consistent topples from Reyn if you are playing as Shulk. Likewise, go ahead and remove battle soul from Shulk’s art palette as the AI will abuse this art, even if it is being aggro’d by a swarm of enemies. The AI’s incompetence could have been mitigated to some degree by giving the player more control. For example, commanding the AI to save their talent arts for a chain attack to string together colour combos and maximize damage. Alas, these are relatively minor complaints in the grand scheme of things.

Xenoblade Definitive Edition is a fantastic game that is well worth your money. Think of the beautiful landscapes in Breath of the Wild, and keep in mind that the studio which helped build that overworld are the ones who made this game. Whether you are traversing the Gaur Plains, Satorl Marsh or Makna Forest, the locations and theme songs will take your breath away. It has a great story, charming characters and enough side content to keep you busy for hundreds of hours. For these reasons, Definitive Edition is my definition of a 10/10 game.

And yeah the resolution/fsp isn't like a Ps4/Xbox One game but this is the Switch and with the current version of this console it never will be. There is a price for the portability of the system, and also it pays to remember this is a Remaster not a Remake a difference that means alot more than some people seem to think. With Remasters everything looks better than the original like just freshening it up a bit to look nicer, where with a remake everything becomes rebuilt from the ground up and when you do that is only when you can get the best quality control. So yeah some textures in the mix look worse than the majority but we have a game that runs from 60-100 hours so im not surprised given the immense size of the world and its locations that a few textures were missed.

Overall this version is THE way to experience this game as far as im concerned and really raises up the experience overall.

As a kinda new Xenoblade fan, i gotta say this game is awesome, it has a lot of things that make it very enjoyable such as great gameplay, a quite unique battle system, one of the most lovable characters cast I have ever seen and amazing locations. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This Game is just straight up Boring. I wanted to play the first game because i saw so much about the second game on Twitter.
So I played it and from the start on you dont know whats happening there is no Introduction or anything you just get thrown into the World and there's a magical Weapon that kills the Mechons better than other weapons, ok. Then you get introduced to Shulk and his random ass friends, who dont get developed the slightest and the one of them dies and its supposed to hurt your feelings. sorry but i dont care much about a character that gets introduced in the first 10 min of the game and then die's randomly. the whole game is just random and unfun things just happen out of nowhere and you have to"figure out" why, but the answer in the end is just , there is a random ass Scientist who created the world and is Hungry for power blabla. So the Story is pretty cringe and boring for today's standards and i would mind as much if the Gameplay was actually fun, but it isnt.
I was waiting hours into the game for shulk to learn new moves but he didnt, so all you do is all game is spamming air-slash and backslash until the end of the game...
So like 60 hours into the i was like yeah this is boring, ill try switching up my team. so i grinded a bit and got good weapons and armor for everyone just to lose every fight because i didnt have shulk on the team. All in all combat feels very janky FOR EVERY FIGHT doesnt matter if its normal enemies or the last boss fight, you just HOPE that your teammates do the right Moves and that you dont get janked by bad timing, and that is not fun at all.
The only thing i enjoyed from this game was the Soundtrack which is phenomenal, it helps to build a feeling of epic-ness and greatness to the world you play in.

    Verdict:

They did a very good job remastering this game and put a very high bar for how to do a proper remaster that other developers should learn from. The story is slow in the beginning but is good in general. However the original is very old and it shows in the various mechanics of the game. Because of the lack of any "real" side quests the game feels very grindy. Inventory and gem management is also a chore. One of the most annoying things is how stupid the friendly AI is. The healer sometimes prefers you dying instead of healing, and when you break an enemy, they refuse to follow up with a topple, and every now and then they will just die because you have zero control over what they're doing. Overall the game is decent, especially so if you consider its age, but there are many modern RPGs which have equally good story, but far superior gameplay.

The most striking new features are the remodeled characters and the environments' graphical overhaul, which combined are now realized to make the emotional journey even more immersive.

The story is just as epic and deep as it was when the game was first released on Nintendo Wii in 2010(JP)/2011(EU)2012(US) and offers a philosophical, psychological and majestic sojourn into a magical world filled to the brim with relatable characters, a tale of standing up for what's right and protecting your world from that which seeks to do it harm. It has a lot of analogies that can be linked to our world and what we're doing with it while also acting as a philosophical vehicle for enlightenment and awakening to truths and understanding that should be common sense in our world but sadly isn't due to the weakness of the human mind.

But I have to say it, this is a lazy port. The game is a masterpiece that deserves so much better. The Wii version should still not be the definitive edition of the game after all these years. The 3DS version was an acceptable handheld port, but the Switch version is barely passable as a handheld port, and the docked version is a joke. Low resolutions, terrible frame lurches when the resolution changes, and an already poor fps. And for what? different character models, not necessarily better character models.

Just have a look at the Wii HD texture pack. The mod fixed most of the games textures with ones that are respectful to the source art. The biggest respected aspect is the characters. When you remake a game you dont change the characters art. You can give them smoother geometry and higher res textures, but not different geometry or textures to the point that they look like different people.

Really poor job on this one. Okami HD could get away with a half assed uprez cause the art suited it. But even still the purists bemoan the loss of the rice paper filter and increase in colour saturation. This game needs a complete environmental overhaul at 1080p 60fps locked with the characters original art intact. Not this mess.

If you dont have a Wii, PC, or a way to buy the original game, then buy this. But know you are getting a subpar experience at full price.

I thoroughly enjoyed Xenoblade Chronicles 2, even if with a hiccup here and there, the biggest of which was the character design which, although great, was too much on the freaky-anime side for me (I'm talking about you, girls looking 12 and having early Pamela's boobs). When I saw the design for XC1 DE was a bit more on a "realistic side" (can't believe I said that about design where people have eyes the side of tennis balls), I was on board. 60 hours later I came out a bit disappointed, but still generally entertained.

To get the obvious out of the way, I haven't played the original Wii/DS version, so I'm at the (dis)advantage of not seeing how much the game has improved, or how I could have experience it 10 years ago, and so I have to take it at face value, AD 2020, and I have to admit, save for the character design, XC1 is a bit inferior experience to its younger sibling is basically every aspect. The character progression, the exploration, the combat, almost everything gameplay-wise makes it obvious that XC1 is an older game. But since it’s not that much of an issue (I still had fun with the game’s mechanics), I’ll give it a pass.

What I can’t give a pass to is the story, or, to be more precise, its direction.

Which is as much anime as it gets, with constant revelations of an unimaginable significance every 15 minutes, deus ex machina exploited ad nauseam, the power of friendship and love overcoming literally everything, and heroes and villains shouting "Could it be...?! But it's impossible...!" interchangeably at explosions of light every other cutscene. You can tell that a given villain is not actually a villain the moment you meet them just on the basis of their voice tone, and all the female characters will have huge boobs, skimpy clothes, and the sole purpose of their existence will be to sacrifice themselves for their man, be it a boyfriend, brother, or father, in between cooking for them and doing other housewife stuff. The final revelations regarding the actual nature of the world and what actually is/was going on is actual deep (if not convoluted) philosophical and morally provocative gold (for a video game), but the way to it is filled with so much teenage drama and evil laughter that a gamer over the age of 16 will be reacting to the cutscenes with a smirk and a frown at best. Which, to be honest, seems to be quite typical for a jRPG - to make a game with incredibly deep lore, a head scratching story, complex and multi-layered gameplay, and fill it up with characters who talk and act like they are in a pre-teen school play.

What is unquestionably good in the game is the visuals and the score. The remastered character design is fantastic, most of the locales are beautiful and their exploration is pure joy, especially when paired with great music. This combo works so good that I found myself sightseeing only for the sake of sightseeing, with no particular purpose, just to see stuff and enjoy the atmosphere. The game, in fact, gets much better when you complete the story and do all the side stuff, and feels like a very good MMO (whether it’s an advantage or disadvantage depends on your personal preference).

I also need to commed the collector’s edition, which includes a nice steelbook, a beautiful fat artbook, and a vinyl record (there’s also a poster and some stuff to download), and the quality-content-price ratio is really good (this being said by a person who also bought the collector's edition of FFVII Remake which is total garbage). If it’s your thing to get a collector’s edition of a game now and then, this would be a good choice.

All in all, if you are a jRPG fan, you will have a lot of fun (add 3 points to the score). If you are not, you will not, and possibly you won’t manage to go through the first 10 hours of the game (subtract 2 points from the score). As a person who is somewhat more of a jRPG enthusiast rather than a fan, those 60 hours with the game was generally a time well -spent. But not a minute more.

One thing, the combat takes a while to get used to because it can get complicated as you unlock the Monado and all of the other skills. Every character has special Arts, skills and strategies so I reccomend you read the in game tutorial several times because this game has a TON of different systems that can get really complicated. For example knowing when to use the Monado arts to combat different boss mechanics.

Another thing that makes this game great is that it's actually a challenge to play. One big flaw of JRPGs is how they always feel so easy but in this game if you're under leveled a boss can kick your ass. There's also a ton of super bosses just laying around with epic loot if you manage to defeat them.

This game deserves a 10/10, must have status and a Bad Ass seal of approval.

As a JRPG, the major reason why you would play this game would be the story. Needless to say, the story ifs fantastic. There are a ton of twists that will catch you off guard, but can still be predicted if you pay close attention. As for the combat, while it is relatively simple, and straightforward, the game does not take the entire game to fully flesh out its combat. Each of the characters bring about a different play style. Shulk focuses more on positionals, Reyn on buffing himself and keeping the enemy on him, and Sharla focuses on support. Sure while combat is simple, if you dislike the combat of a particular character, you can always change who you are controlling. If you were not a fan of Xenoblade 2, the general consensus in the Xenoblade community is that this one is superior as far as story and characters are concerned. That being said, I am not saying that all of the characters in 2 are boring, Xenoblade Chronicles just handles its main cast significantly better. There is not a single character in the main party that I dislike.

The music in Definitive Edition is amazing, thankfully, if you are not a big fan of the remastered soundtrack, you can always switch back to the original soundtrack.

As for the changes made in the Definitive edition, There are a ton of quality of life improvements such as, icons to indicate which item orbs you need to grab, NPC tracking, quest tracking, Scout spotted you exclamation mark, art suggestion marker, Gift result memory, and many others. Needless to say, trying to 100% this game or even completing side quests are far less tedious than it was in the original game.

A complaint that I have noticed in a significant amount of reviews is the fact that this game is grindy. This game will take you forever to grind your characters to the correct level threshold, if you are fighting monsters for grinding. Side quests give you far more experience than fighting enemies do, that being said, do not feel the need to complete all the sidequests that you get. If you complete no side quests, you will be underleveled, and if you complete all the sidequests in a particular area, you will be overleveled for the next boss. One thing to keep in mind is that 81 out of the 480 side quests in the game are found in the first area, so don't feel the need to complete all the quests here; however, if you are struggling to defeat bosses because of the level difference, consider doing a few side quests that give you exp, or better equipment. If ever you find yourself overleveled, there is an addition introduced in DE called Expert Mode. You can manually adjust which level you are with that option. The other complaint is the fact that you move too slowly, there is a gem that you can either craft, get from a sidequest, or get from finishing a page of the collectabedia called Quickstep gems. Equipping those will increase the movement speed of the character it is on.

I personally find that this is one of the best JRGs ever created, and if you think this is nostalgia speaking, I have played the original game last year and stopped around halfway through because definitive edition was announced. That being said, the game should take around 70-80 hours to complete, if it take more time than that, either you are trying to be a completionist, or you are grinding manually.

Remastered traditional J-RPG. but still UI and UX is not followed these days.
Especially, side quests were bored, not related with main quest flow and forced repeat play (save & load). There is nothing befored happen Un-expected(reversal) story to predicting that. It is worse point in this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. badords can't describe how amazing this JRPG still is 10 years later. The characters are so memorable. The music is outstanding. The world is so imaginative that it's still yet to be outclassed by anything else since it's debut in 2010. The story keeps you guessing with it's mystery, and the story is an absolute masterclass because it's so well written and perfectly executed with plot twists… Ex Expand

I would personally give the game a 9.5/10, but I can only round to whole numbers. The game's story, while can fall back on anime tropes(including the infamously awkward dialougue and screaming), is brillantly thought out and planned. But I feel the game shines best in its gameplay, the positioning system keeps what would be a fairly good MOBA into something that is constantly engaging. But I feel the game shines best in its gameplay, the positioning system keeps what would be a fairly good MOBA into something that is constantly engaging. The world is one of the best I have experienced in gaming, it is beautiful, unique, and filled with stuff to do and enemies to fight. All of the characters are worth playing and offer very unique roles and the combat system is filled with depth but remains easily understandable. The music is phenominal and the amount of content the game puts up is massive. The DE version of the game adds quite a bit more than your typical DE version. Graphically the game was improved immensely and performance has improved quite a bit from the Wii version. Various quality-of-life improvements were made. The music was almost completely redone with a real orchestra barring a track or two AND the game offers the ability to use the original tracks for those who prefer it. The game also adds another 15 hours to the game's total length with an additional side story and area. This is likely the best way to remake one of gaming's best. Expand

Xenoblade Chronicles is still one of the best games of the genre, which 10 years later continues to delight and surprise with a unique world, luxurious epic landscapes, an incredible sense of freedom, beautiful music and a really interesting story. Of course, it is a pity that the Definitive Edition has a technical limitation in terms of resolution, which does not allow the image to really shine in 2020, but otherwise it is a chic project that every fan of the genre of adventure and Japanese role-playing games should play.

It’s hard to believe this is a game that released in 2012 and not more recently. Though there are some dated and heavy systems, the atmosphere and a combat system that gives freedom and depth make Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition an RPG for the ages.
