The story is amazing, the characters are amazing and the maps feel huge and open world. There's always something to do with Quests, collectibles, character leveling, gem crafting etc. etc.

One thing, the combat takes a while to get used to because it can get complicated as you unlock the Monado and all of the other skills. Every character has special Arts, skills and strategies so I reccomend you read the in game tutorial several times because this game has a TON of different systems that can get really complicated. For example knowing when to use the Monado arts to combat different boss mechanics.

Another thing that makes this game great is that it's actually a challenge to play. One big flaw of JRPGs is how they always feel so easy but in this game if you're under leveled a boss can kick your ass. There's also a ton of super bosses just laying around with epic loot if you manage to defeat them.

This game deserves a 10/10, must have status and a Bad Ass seal of approval.

So what do you get when you remake a masterpiece to fix almost all of its very few flaws. You get a 10/10 game is what happens. My only complaint with this game is that the animations are still very shoddy and unsynced. Of course, Monolithsoft did the best they could using a 10-year old animations engine, and would've haved to delay the project several more years if they did this. Only running at 504P in Handheld and 720P Docked. Handheld mode isn't too bad, but I was expecting that the resolution would it at least be 720P handheld to 900P docked upscaled, but that little nitpick isn't enough to keep anyone from playing this absolute masterpiece. As a JRPG, the major reason why you would play this game would be the story. Needless to say, the story ifs fantastic. There are a ton of twists that will catch you off guard, but can still be predicted if you pay close attention. As for the combat, while it is relatively simple, and straightforward, the game does not take the entire game to fully flesh out its combat. Each of the characters bring about a different play style. Shulk focuses more on positionals, Reyn on buffing himself and keeping the enemy on him, and Sharla focuses on support. Sure while combat is simple, if you dislike the combat of a particular character, you can always change who you are controlling. If you were not a fan of Xenoblade 2, the general consensus in the Xenoblade community is that this one is superior as far as story and characters are concerned. That being said, I am not saying that all of the characters in 2 are boring, Xenoblade Chronicles just handles its main cast significantly better. There is not a single character in the main party that I dislike.

The music in Definitive Edition is amazing, thankfully, if you are not a big fan of the remastered soundtrack, you can always switch back to the original soundtrack.

As for the changes made in the Definitive edition, There are a ton of quality of life improvements such as, icons to indicate which item orbs you need to grab, NPC tracking, quest tracking, Scout spotted you exclamation mark, art suggestion marker, Gift result memory, and many others. Needless to say, trying to 100% this game or even completing side quests are far less tedious than it was in the original game.

A complaint that I have noticed in a significant amount of reviews is the fact that this game is grindy. This game will take you forever to grind your characters to the correct level threshold, if you are fighting monsters for grinding. Side quests give you far more experience than fighting enemies do, that being said, do not feel the need to complete all the sidequests that you get. If you complete no side quests, you will be underleveled, and if you complete all the sidequests in a particular area, you will be overleveled for the next boss. One thing to keep in mind is that 81 out of the 480 side quests in the game are found in the first area, so don't feel the need to complete all the quests here; however, if you are struggling to defeat bosses because of the level difference, consider doing a few side quests that give you exp, or better equipment. If ever you find yourself overleveled, there is an addition introduced in DE called Expert Mode. You can manually adjust which level you are with that option. The other complaint is the fact that you move too slowly, there is a gem that you can either craft, get from a sidequest, or get from finishing a page of the collectabedia called Quickstep gems. Equipping those will increase the movement speed of the character it is on.

I personally find that this is one of the best JRGs ever created, and if you think this is nostalgia speaking, I have played the original game last year and stopped around halfway through because definitive edition was announced. That being said, the game should take around 70-80 hours to complete, if it take more time than that, either you are trying to be a completionist, or you are grinding manually.

Monolithsoft have knocked it out the park with this one and anyone who is a fan of JRPGs should definitely pick up this game up. From twist villains like Mumkahr and Dickson to sprawling areas such as Guar Plain and Valak Snowfields and an engaging combat system, this game proves time and time again that it lives up to the hype. I probably enjoyed this better than Xenoblade 2, Xenoblade 1 has more story, more enjoyable characters so on. That being said Xenoblade 2 is still pretty good but this is much better. There really isn't much to say when it comes to this version of the game. It manages to clearly be a love letter to the die-hard fans while, at the same time, it tries to become as appealing as possible to a new demographic: Switch owners and newcomers of the franchise (people who played either Xenoblade Chronicles X and/or 2, but that didn't have the chance to check this one out). The updated graphics and nice additions in the quality of life department brought an already impeccable Wii game even closer to perfection. The revamped OST is definitely nice too but the real goat here and what you could say that it was utmost necessary is the new look that Monolith Software gave this game.
There's absolutely no excuse now for you to not give a chance to this underlooked JRPG gem from the last generation of consoles. Lastly, I can only hope that you're really feeling it and having a Reyn of a time while playing it.
And remember, just as you can't have a rainbow without Reyn, you can't truly know the taste of the modern JRPG's formula until you've played Xenoblade Chronicles.

I know perfectly well how hard it is to justify a 10/10 rating and to be honest, I was kind of tempted to give Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition a 9/10 because I felt like it would probably be taken more seriously, but in the end, I just couldn't do it because I just love playing it so much.

This doesn't mean this game has not flaws because there certainly are some, but it's despite all of them that I've been playing this on a daily basis since it came out a month ago, and I normally tend to switch between games rather quickly once I've finished them.

What XCDE still does best ist the amazing worldbuilding, storytelling, its highly customizable and varied combat system and the brilliant english voice acting.
Also the soundtrack, which was already great in the Wii and 3DS releases, has now been greatly overhauled for this version which makes it almost just as incredible as the one found in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, though sometimes the occasional sampled instruments are still just a little bit more obvious.

Graphically, if you manage to look past some small shortcomings like grass fading in and the resolution not being as good as it could technically be (yes it's a shame but not at all as bad as many people like to make it sound), XCDE manages to impress in quite a few ways. There's the customizable and completely overhauled UI, the added option of appearance gear that lets you choose your characters' appearances independently of their equipment which is even visible in the epic cutscenes, the remade character models which all look nice and clean this time around and of course the breathtaking landscapes that only Monloith Soft manages to craft in this unique way in my opinion (who were in charge of developing Breath of the Wild's world as well, as you might know).

The story remains the same as in the original, which is both a very good thing and a little bit of a shame at the same time. As amazing and intriguing as it is and as brilliantly as it's told, Definitive Edition would have definitely offered an opportunity to expand on some smaller aspects of it which it doesn't. I still love every part of it, from the characters to the pacing and general flow; there's just no episode in the game whatsoever that doesn't contribute to the main plot at least in some subtle way you might only realize later on or even on a second playthrough. In my honest opinion, this is among the absolute best RPG stories there are on the video game market and it even still outclasses Xenoblade 2s story in a lot of ways.

As for the core gameplay, one thing I would have liked to see is the AI of party members getting an overhaul. Sadly, that isn't the case and you'll still want to make sure to take control of certain party members yourself if you want to use them, since this really isn't the best AI.
Yet on the contrary, that is really the only complaint I have regarding the combat system, and that's saying something. Though combat is based on auto-attacks and cooldown-based arts, there's so much going on on screen most of the time that you'll need to constantly pay attention instead of being able to let the game play itself. Every character feels and plays unique and what makes this JRPG combat special is that the characters actually depend on each other in order to unfold their full potential - so not just controlling one character alone actually has a meaning in this case.
There's also a huge amount of customization for you to do. Part of the fun is trying out which party setups synergize best together, which arrangement of arts and equipment benefit your desired constellation the most and ultimately, which playstyle you prefer. XCDE also encourages experimentation by making you adapt to certain types of enemies because of their unique attack patterns or other attributes such as different kinds of auras. All in all, this makes for a very strategic, varied and also individual experience that can sometimes be very challenging and keep you on the edge of your chair during particularily hard fights. Even doing a bunch of quests on the side, I only managed to be overleveled for about an hour of gameplay before meeting unique enemies that almost stomped my party again.

Speaking of the quests: Yes, there's a lot of generic ones in there. I highly recommend accepting them as soon as they pop up and just completing them as part of the exploration process, instead of hording them and then trying to grind them all at once, which admittedly can get quite tedious. But XCDE also does go out of its way to make them as easy to complete as possible, showing you exactly where you need to go and even giving you rewards straight after completion instead of having you backtrack to the questgiver in many cases. And there's also some questlines that do tell charming or fun little stories, so be on the look out for those. ;)

All in all, this remains my favorite RPG to date and I don't regret buying it a second time at all.

Some cons of the game are however are dated the animations for characters in cuts scenes everyone looks great but when certain characters run it just looks goofy and unfortunately since the original language of the game is Japanese there is no lipsync for the English dub however this is common in JRPGs these are only nitpicks it doesn't take away the experience of the game.

This game is a masterpiece. Never in my life has a work of fiction captivated me to the level of this video game. I would say the four things i love it for the most are the story, characters, music and exploration. This game gives you a huge world to explore, with beautiful environments and secret areas all around the 2 titans which are the setting of the game. The main character, Shulk, sets out with his friend Reyn for revenge on the inhabitants of the other titans, mechon (evil machines). The story is gripping and although at a couple of points slow, it is emotional, well crafted and enjoyable. I would spoil so much, but I want to keep this review for those who have never played. There are unexpected twists which were foreshadowed, but you never see them coming. The characters are lovable, relatable, optimistic and well voiced, you really feel like you're on a journey with them. Shulk's visions add to the core 3 aspects of the game: story, combat and exploration. These are well executed and interesting. The music is just shockingly good, the best in any game. you can switch between the original and remastered tracks any time for both battle and area themes. I regularly listen to the tracks out of the game. They can be emotional, intense, jovial or melancholy and suit their scenes well. The graphics are the best they've ever been. I have not played in handheld mode yet, as i think this is best played on a big screen with headphones on. For this you can get a powerA enhanced wired controller or audio afterglow controller. The textures models and effects are fantastic, i would say the best looking xenoblade game yet. I have experienced no resolution issues.
There are also some fun side quests, only some however are worth the effort. The combat is great fun and can be optimised to death. It focuses on positioning, preparation, timing and customisation. There are also loads of optional challenging bosses to fight.
Do yourself a favour and pick this game up right now.

The most striking new features are the remodeled characters and the environments' graphical overhaul, which combined are now realized to make the emotional journey even more immersive.

The story is just as epic and deep as it was when the game was first released on Nintendo Wii in 2010(JP)/2011(EU)2012(US) and offers a philosophical, psychological and majestic sojourn into a magical world filled to the brim with relatable characters, a tale of standing up for what's right and protecting your world from that which seeks to do it harm. It has a lot of analogies that can be linked to our world and what we're doing with it while also acting as a philosophical vehicle for enlightenment and awakening to truths and understanding that should be common sense in our world but sadly isn't due to the weakness of the human mind.

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is everything I could’ve asked for and more! I didn’t expect much going into Xenoblade DE because I had seen the gameplay and wasn’t really a fan, but after playing it I must say that it is one of the best gameplay experiences I have had! I understand that Xenoblade’s gameplay isn’t for everyone and that tons of other games have considerably better gameplay and graphics. But Xenoblade’s gameplay just fits what I like in a game so well! There’s a ton of strategy involved before and during a fight, which is something I’ve always enjoyed. And the story is amazing and honestly holds up pretty well 10 years later. All of the twists in the game genuinely caught me off guard and shocked me. The world is AMAZING! Every location is amazing in their own way, and the sights in places like Valak Mountain, Eryth Sea, and Satorl Marsh at night are truly some of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen in any form of media, and that is no exaggeration! The music is amazing in every single aspect of the word! The battle themes, especially You Will Know Our Names, Mechanical Rhythm, and Time to Fight from FC get me excited and hyped while pieces like the Fallen Land in Fallen Arm and Valak Mountain’s Night Theme are calming and peaceful. The entire OST is full of amazing tracks that truly captivate you. The characters are amazing and well voiced, especially Shulk. Adam Howden does not get enough praise for his outstanding performance as Shulk. Adam Howden perfectly encapsulates Shulk’s character with his heart wrenching yells and screams to his calm, kind, and warm talking voice. I truly cannot praise this game enough! It has easily become my favorite video game of all time, dethroning BOTW, which speaks numbers about its profound effect on me. I understand that the gameplay may not be the most exciting for a lot of people since it is very niche, but if you are even slightly interested, I cannot recommend this game enough. This game and series are highly underrated and deserve much more praise and acclaim than they already receive. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitige Edition to me is not just a game; it is an experience that can only be truly appreciated once you play it for yourself. All I can say is please buy this game. You will absolutely not regret it.

If you haven’t played this game, play it. It’s worth it. This remake is great as well, it enhanced the game and does some things that the original couldn’t. I will say that my only criticism is the resolution (at times). Docked, this game runs at 720p, and while the game does have a dynamic resolution, it never really changes from 720p in docked mode, contrary to what some might believe. In portable mode, this game runs at 540p, and that really does not drop throughout the entirety of the main game. However, this changes during the extra epilogue that this remake offers. During this epilogue, that portable 540p resolution will drop, and the game can look a bit blurry at times. It’s nothing on the level of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but it is worth noting. Other than that, this game is a JRPG masterpiece. If you own a Switch, you need to own this game. Expand

There is a reason fans gush about this game. This is the type of game that you can get lost in for a very long time. You can spend hundreds of hours with it.

The story is darker and more mature than you might expect (especially for a game produced by Nintendo). The game looks “anime” but the story isn’t as cliched or corny as you might think. It definitely kept me engaged.

The English translation and voice acting are great. The game was originally translated for a European audience because Nintendo didn’t have plans to bring it to America, so the voices are not American. If you’ve played any of the recent Dragon Quest games or Ni No Kuni, the voice acting is comparable to those.

There is an option to turn battle dialogue off, which I recommend, because it can get annoying hearing the same few lines repeated thousands of times.

The best part of the game, to me, is the combat. It has one of the best, most addictive battle systems in any game I have ever played. Seriously. It just has to be experienced to be understood. It’s phenomenal and so fun to play. It’s as deep as you want it to be. What’s so cool about Xenoblade it how customizable it is. You can change your party, assign abilities, reposition your attack commands any way you’d like, and have the experience you want to have.

Combat is comparable to MMOs in the sense that every ability has a cooldown timer. Where things get interesting is the synergies between party members’ abilities. You can easily sit back and use auto-attack or mash buttons and do fine, but the game rewards players who pay attention and understand the mechanics. When you pay attention to Arts and queue up attacks with synergies, to keep attack chains going. The longer your attack chain, the higher damage you deal and the better your rewards at the end of combat. It’s a very interactive battle system and makes playing truly engaging.

Now that the Switch allows for button remapping, the customization options for Xenoblade Chronicles are even better. I prefer having the left and right d-pad buttons mapped to the ZL and ZR shoulder buttons and the A button mapped to a R stick press. It makes using Arts in combat WAY more fluid.

I am a huge RPG fan and... wow. This is probably the best I've played. Each area is massive, and allows for unparalleled exploration. I thought BOTW had it down, and it did but... man. This game NAILS it. Its combat system is also unique. It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you get a hang of it it is great, and extremely deep. I have not beat the game yet but MAN, that story is amazing. It does a really good job of keeping suspense and I have had points where I'm dying to know who those people are in that one cutscene. Speaking of cutscenes, the voice acting is top notch. Its all very british, retaining that feel from the original (which I have not played). That voice acting does contrast will the japanese-eyness (word) of the game, but works SO WELL. And the music, the MUSIC! I am an audiofile, so this is very important to me. It is outstanding. I cannot even begin to describe how good it is. It works so well everywhere, especially in the emotional cutscenes. The worlds are creative, the characters memorable, and everything works so well. PLAY THIS GAME. Trust me, it is one of the finest experiences gaming has to offer. It has shattered my every expectation and has done so for many others. Please from the bottom of my heart, play it. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is the best game I have ever played. When I played the original at the time it was the best game I've ever played despite the game's flaws, most of which were the graphics, the way side-quests are handled, and how the user interface can be clunky to navigate. As a remake of Xenoblade Chronicles; Definitive Edition fixed all of the problems the first game had and completely overhauls the visual for the better. The environments look like how one would imagine them when I visited them on the Wii. This game has the best story I've ever had the pleasure of viewing in any form of media, Xenoblade Chronicles tells a story of revenge and then continues to build on its premise and world until the very end of the game, it is truly a masterpiece in storytelling and I envy anyone who will get to witness the story unfold with the stunning visuals that Definitive Edition offers on top of the amazing writing it already had.

The game isn't all just story the game is centered around its combat and exploration. The combat takes place in real-time and will keep you on your toes as each enemy has different attacks they can use, and Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition has game mechanics that tie into the story and makes combat all the better for it, as you have to pay attention to the connection between your party members and how they are feeling during a battle(it sounds weird saying it like that but trust me it's really cool).

Overall, Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is an absolute masterpiece that should be in every switch owners library of games, for newcomers to the RPG genre of games you should not be worried what-so-ever, this game is very welcoming and slowly brings you into how games of this kind work, even if you have only played Pokemon you will have no trouble getting the hang of things in this game. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is a game with fantastic visuals, gameplay, and story. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is the game by which all further games released from this point should be judged.

10/10, but it would be around 10000/10 if that's how the scoring system worked.

My first time playing a "Xenoblade" game and I was not disappointed. I haven't been this invested in a JRPG in a long time if I'm being honest. The soundtrack is memorable, the story kept me engaged, and I loved the characters. Now I understand why people loved it so much since the beginning.

So, I was introduced to Xenoblade by playing the 3DS version (I know, not the best way haha). Even with the tone down graphics and inconsistent frame rate, I fell in love with the game. Oh man, oh boy, this is definitely Definitive!
The graphics are all revamped, but every single aspect that made the original great are here. I could fall in love again with Shulk, Fiora, Reyn, Dunban, Sharla and all the gang. Some of the soundtrack was redone and managed to be even more awesome (and you can still select to listen to the original too).
And more, a new chapter is included and, while a bit short, makes this version it even more enticing for those who played the original over and over.

If you like a complex JRPG with fantastic world, crazy yet consistent (and intriguing!) plot and lovable characters, you will LOVE this game!

If you have already played the original, go for it as well. The new content and remastered graphics/audio are well worth it. Besides, rewatching the intro with the new graphics made me go all "I'M REALLY FEELING IT!" all over again!

    Damn, I love this game!

Xenoblade Chronicles is still one of the best games of the genre, which 10 years later continues to delight and surprise with a unique world, luxurious epic landscapes, an incredible sense of freedom, beautiful music and a really interesting story. Of course, it is a pity that the Definitive Edition has a technical limitation in terms of resolution, which does not allow the image to really shine in 2020, but otherwise it is a chic project that every fan of the genre of adventure and Japanese role-playing games should play.

It’s hard to believe this is a game that released in 2012 and not more recently. Though there are some dated and heavy systems, the atmosphere and a combat system that gives freedom and depth make Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition an RPG for the ages.
