This truly is the Definitive Edition with absolutely stunning HD visuals, beautiful and expressive new character models, a wonderfully remastered orchestra and a delightful epilogue game tying up loose ends with one of the best members of the cast. Different systems were implemented and streamlined gameplay wise as well making the ease of access to playing much easier. Really this remaster is bordering on the line of a remake with just how much has been changed and added, and only in the best way. Even if you've already played there's enough content to warrant a replay, and that's speaking as someone who put 150 hours into his first playthrough five years ago but never quite hit 100%. This time around I finished every single side-quest from the pool of 400+ and finished every achievement trials, so finishing the journey meant even more to me the second time around.

An amazing and emotional journey, a perfect cast of characters, a fantastic soundtrack, and now even an extra add-on game with a whole new area to explore with new characters adds a cherry to the top of a perfect treat of a game. This game will always be near and dear to my heart, and if you read this, I hope you can enjoy it too.

I saw lot of people suggesting playing this after BOTW to get another epic adventure but with RPG mechanics. I wanted a better story since BOTW is lacking in that area, and obviously this game gets high praise for its story. I generally enjoy RPGs and recently played FF XII: The Zodiac Age and it really grew on me, so I was open to this more MMO-type battle system.

I generally enjoy RPGs and recently played FF XII: The Zodiac Age and it really grew on me, so I was open to this more MMO-type battle system.

I was impressed by the world, and the strategy of the combat intrigued me. The voice acting and cutscenes were pretty impressive, and the story seemed quite interesting. Unfortunately, on my second session of playing the game, I found myself dozing off while playing. I figured I was just tired, but then it happened during another session, and then another.

I still haven't figured out what was so boring about this game. The quests just feel like running from checkpoint to checkpoint on your map. There is no rewarding feeling of discovery from the quests or in the items you get. I would get new weapons/armor and it would make me stronger but there was nothing exciting about getting a new weapon. Sometimes it felt like they were too OP. One weird thing for me right away was that I couldn't use a potion or anything to heal myself in or after battle like a typical game. Your health just restores completely about 5 seconds after battle. So the game seems to be less about using resources to surviving your journey, but rather just about surviving each individual battle encounter. I don't know, this was just weird to me and took away a lot of the challenge.

I put this game down about 15-20 hours in. I know people say that you have to give certain games more time than that, but I just didn't have the patience. Nothing hooked me.

Was great at the beginning but got boring later .Didn't like the combat mechanic which is very complicated. Sometimes complicated fighting mechanics get good later on in the game but not in this case.common cliches like power of friendship, gods, not killing any enemy really got on my nerves

One of the best game's I've played in the past decade and easily one of the best JRPGs of all time. Some of the best worldbuilding and music I've seen in a game, likeable characters, super convenient and diverse gameplay, a ton of side content and just an epic journey all around.

Only small gripes are it is very long, though that can be a positive, as well as it can get grindy at times and the side quests don't give a ton of XP unless you start the large branches early. The colony building is cool, and again the plot and characters are just phenomenal. Another gripe is that there are some quests/areas that are locked away near the end making it impossible to 100% if you didn't do everything there which does hurt a game like this. Those are annoying, but the game is still so good it's a 10/10. Oh and futures connected is cool. The definition of a must play for JRPG fans. Expand

Really lovely game. From the quality of the port, I can see how much love and care the devs put into this. Enhanced music is great, the battle system is fascinating, and some of the QoL features are lifesavers (just like Reyn). I would've preferred if they hid more secrets in the overworld, but this complaint is trivial. I don't know what much else to say. It's great.

The story is a bit confusing until the very end but works well, the combat is complex and challenging. Overall a nice experience and a very good RPG for those who love the genre.

This game is one of the best JRPGs I have played, if not the best. I am rating it a 10/10 not because it is perfect, but because it is a masterpiece. No video game moved me as much as Xenoblade Chronicles did.

The gameplay is really fun for me. It feels so good to discover the right tactics, correct positioning, the right accessories/gems to wear, the most sound composition for a certain boss, etc. It's just so technical, and I liked it very much. Some battles were very easy because I over-levelled after doing so many side-quests but the challenging ones don't fail to surprise and leave me thinking of ways to be victorious.

The story is mind-blowing, original, and successfully glues together all of its reasons of being with logic. It's like reading a good book and you just can't put it down.

The music is very good as well. When laid out together, they create a unique experience that is Xenoblade Chronicles the same way final fantasy further built its worlds through memorable melodies.

The world building is phenomenal; it is very unusual, but pulled off exquisitely. The places were laden with beauty and care. The details the developers put into the world are spot on.

I loved the characters because they were "alive", logical, and will make the player really give a damn with what they want to achieve. They were unpredictable, and mostly outside the clichés of anime characters. The relationships between the protagonists are so wholesome that I often find myself smiling throughout cutscenes after cutscenes where they interact with one another. I also often found myself surprised with how events went for them.

Don't hesitate. Buy it, play it, and be amazed.

Since everybody else is talking about its greatness, i will focus on those weaknesses:

    - The resolution in handheld mode is unbearable
    - The game is very grind-heavy, while at the same time, grinding doesnt feel especially rewarding, and is generally too slow
    - The story is pretty clichee (personal oppinion), and didnt catch me
    - The world feels sterile: You cannot enter houses, collectables are just blue balls, and enemies just stand or walk around, and wait for you
    - The presentstion is too "asian", and not mature
    - Most important: The character developement and the battle system are uninteresting, and become repetitive fast

In the end, it is a good remaster of a (once) very good, but very clunky game.
It absolutely is a game worth playing, but it still leaves too many weaknesses, to be the true definitive version of the game...

Personally, i didnt enjoy it to the end, and just beat the game to finish the journey. And, although i absolutely am a completionist, i skipped many quests and exploration, and wont do a new game+...

Im rating XCDE with 8.4/10 points

If you haven’t played this game, play it. It’s worth it. This remake is great as well, it enhanced the game and does some things that the original couldn’t. I will say that my only criticism is the resolution (at times). Docked, this game runs at 720p, and while the game does have a dynamic resolution, it never really changes from 720p in docked mode, contrary to what some might believe. In portable mode, this game runs at 540p, and that really does not drop throughout the entirety of the main game. However, this changes during the extra epilogue that this remake offers. During this epilogue, that portable 540p resolution will drop, and the game can look a bit blurry at times. It’s nothing on the level of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but it is worth noting. Other than that, this game is a JRPG masterpiece. If you own a Switch, you need to own this game. Expand

And the 'acclaimed' music is pretty horrid, and far cry from the great soundtrack Baten Kaitos had. And the remastered soundtrack manages to be even worse!
But I think the worst bit is the lack of atmosphere in the game world, and the unconvincing, cliche'd characters that lack depth.
This is one of those 'essential' JRPGs that you can safely pass without having missed anything essential.

The combat was fun, but it had some poor aspects like the visions constantly interrupting your gameplay and chain attacks being based on rng (thank God they changed this in Xenoblade 2). The story, world and characters are absolutely amazing, the gameplay as expected was super fun and engaging and has kept me busy ever since i picked it up there are many side quest's, unlockables and places to explore and discover as expected from a game in the Xenoblade Series that will keep you engaged and playing even after completing the main story, there is also a bonus epilogue game exclusive to this remaster that takes place after the event's of the main game that expands the story even further which made an excellent addition to this amazing game. regardless If you are someone like me who never had the chance to play the original release or If you are someone who played the original release I would definitely recommend picking up this game this is an amazing open world story based RPG and it absolutely lives up to it's title ''Definitive Edition'' Expand

The graphics aren't perfect on the Switch (not super high resolution) but they're still a huge step up from the original.

Everything about this game is great. The biggest flaw is probably the annoying party AI. Other than that - great story, voice acting, combat, environments, exploration, etc. All the systems are well explained and are fun with nice UI (skills, arts, collectibles, affinities, etc.)

Then on the other side of the fan base saying play with the English dubbed version and they all give there reasons on why you/we/I should play it Japanese or English dubbed.

I switched out between the two to see which I perfected and I decided to just stick it out with the English dubbed and it’s one of them ones where it kind of grows on you like the voice-overs and the way they say certain words at first YES it is odd but it's kinda adds charm to it it’s really strange to try and explain it and on the bonus side it saves you having to read all the time.

I’m only on chapter 11 or 12 and I’m like 130+ but I’m one of the people who has to do everything I can in an area before I move on so that’s why my hours are what they are so high.
But don't let the hours put off because there all side quests and you don't have to do them.

And Lastly I hope you enjoy the game like I am and the game has so much charm it’s amazing!

2020 was the year I finally decided to give the Xenoblade Chronicles series a shot, with the release of the remaster of the first game. I have always heard good things of it, however the sequel never really appealed to me, because the character models seemed a bit too excessive for my liking to take the game serious. I didn’t get that impression from the first game though, so I decided to give it a try – and I’m glad to have made that decision.

One of the first things that surprised me was the size of the world. Just exploring the first area in the game – Colony 9 – can take about ten hours if you take your time, talk to the npcs and do some optional side quests. The great thing about the npcs is, that they aren’t just random people who have one or two lines of dialogue, most of them actually have personality. To keep track of them, the game notes these people in the so-called affinity chart, where you can look up, which people you have met along the way and how they relate to each other. These relations can even change, if you decide to do specific side quests, which makes the npcs even more realistic. That feature alone makes talking to npcs much more interesting and kept me motivated to talk to every person on my adventure. This one might be a bit unfair because the base is already ten years old, however I think the world itself might be a bit static, compared to modern open world games. There just aren’t that many things you can interact with, besides some buttons or crystal deposits. (Maybe I’m just spoiled with Breath of the Wild idk)

Despite there being some side quests, which are interesting and have their own little story, there are also a bunch of them, which feel like filler. Quests, which require you to slay certain monsters or collect materials, that don’t have a impact on anything can get a bit tiresome at times, but at least you can use the gathered loot, if you stumble upon more interesting quest. However, that doesn’t make them feel any less dull given the amount there are.

Getting used to the dynamic combat system in Xenoblade isn’t an easy task. I found myself overwhelmed several times in the first few hours, since you simultaneously need to select the type of attack – so called Arts – and move your character, because the impact differs depending on your alignment towards the enemy. However, if you get the hang of it, it’s really satisfying and engaging. In fact, I don’t think I have spent this much time adjusting the equipment of my party members in any other game. That’s probably due to the gems you can additionally equip your party members with, which not only enhance basic stats, like attack or defense, but also more specific properties, like attack speed or spike damage. It just adds a layer of variety, which I haven’t seen yet in an RPG yet. Because of how addictive the combat system gets, I never had to grind additionally. If anything, I had to use the expert mode, which has been added in the remaster to lower the levels of my party members, since I tended to overlevel at times. The great thing about that mode is, that you can store the earned EXP and use it later to level up your characters at will. That’s not the only quality of live improvement the remaster has added though. Quest tracking is also more clear and simple now, as the path to the objective gets marked on the minimap, which I really appreciate, because there’s no way you would remember the location of every enemy or item on your own.

I won’t talk much about the story, because it’s at its best if you don’t know anything about it. However, I will say there are some moments, which got me quite emotional and I didn’t expect the plot to take the path it did. All of the characters really grew on me, thanks to their well written dialogue and surprisingly solid english voice acting. I also liked the heart-to-hearts, which give you an insight into the relation of two characters.

At last I want to address the graphics and soundtrack of the game. Most of the time I played in docked mode and didn’t spot anything I would consider plain bad looking, except for some noticeable clipping issues with the character models. While the in-game animations can look a little bit dull, the rendered cutscenes look great in my opinion, as well as the entire soundtrack.

To me, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is like a good book that you just can’t lay down. It’s a great game, with an really interesting and engaging story, likeable characters and surprisingly addictive combat system. I definitely don’t regret this two-month long journey and recommend it to everyone, who likes either JRPGs in general or just wants to experience a captivating adventure.

Just recently, I have played Y‘s 8, Dragon Quest 11, Nino Kuni and this one for the very first time. All in all Xenobalde Chronicles is a great game, I just did not enjoy it as much as the others in my list above.

Some of the main reasons might be:
It took me about 60+ hrs to get to the final 15% of the main story. Until that point, I have never died once, did lot´s of the side missions, had about level 65 and all of the sudden started to have no chance against bigger bosses. To be honest, through the entire game I was not going „full strategy“ on enemies, I was mainly using what worked last time, so I was a little surprised that the game obviously either wanted me to grind to higher levels (takes a lot of time here if you don‘t want to watch „Tutorials“) or learn a proper fighting technique (which is hard at the end of a game where the game gave you positive feedback on your fighting for the first 60 hrs). Luckily there is „Casual Mode“, so I switched to this, let´s say for the final 10%. I don‘t think that you miss out something playing that.

I also did not feel the fun in changing my party throughout the game and learn how to play new characters. I like to stay with my party and upgrade it as good as possible. If you are someone who is up for switching and learning different characters, this is definitely the game for you.

Xenoblade is always very good, great story, never boring and works great to be played in shorter „chunks“ of playtime (20-30min sessions). I simply did not enjoy it as much as other RPGs recently (re)released on the Switch.

Never thought I would've liked this game as much as I did. It has plenty of charm! Each character is unique with their own stories and their own ideals and with the story progression you'll start to feel really connected to them and their ambitions because the story is so beautiful, so well crafted.
The combat is addicting and as you learn new arts and new party members appear there are a lot more strategies in your gameplay and it turns it even more fun. It can be quite painful to understand at first but once you get it, it becomes the most addicting thing in the whole game.
The OST is magnificent, every sound is really good and lovely, it's really nice to hear those masterpieces while exploring the world. The world of Xenoblade not only has enjoyable sounds but it has a lot of good and gorgeous places to visit, it's amazing to explore and it also has a lot of varied enemies in each place. Sidequests are maybe the only letdown since they're not that memorable but they're also nice to do and are valuable to the gigantic affinity chart the game offers.
In conclusion, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is almost a perfect game, a perfect JRPG it's a game that excels in everything from story to OST to gameplay which becomes really addictive once you get to play it's first few hours.

This game is PERFECTION to me, and to many others it seems. I don't think it's humanly possible to describe the perfection of this game in only 5000 characters. But i'll go over all the aspects I can.
    Firstly:
Story: I won't spoil this, even in this review I can't, just play it for yourself, it's honestly one of the greatest stories in a video game to date.
Music: Almost every single song in this soundtrack is an amazing thing to hear, i love it so much... it's perfect at setting the mood in every location you go to, the battle music is always great and it's hard to describe what feeling the music of this game gives you.
Characters: Every character in this game has a purpose, from the nerdy but brave Shulk, the heroic and downright bad-ass Dunban, to the lovable goofball that is Riki, each character has some sort of story, even the ones that are not in the main cast, each Side-quest has a great feeling to it, adding onto the world... oh yeah, side-quests!
Side-quests: They managed to fix the bad side-quest system with the first game... My only problem with it. and it's great now, you can finally track the locations of enemies and items for side-quests instead of being lucky with the item orbs you get, you can finally complete each and every side-quest without it feeling like a drag which is just amazing to me.
(Honestly, i might be able to finish this in less that 5k words because the story is such a big part of it, and i don't want to spoil any of it)
    Well, in short:
Play this game, if you like RPGS or you are unsure on them, play this.
This is my favourite game of all time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is perhaps the greatest JRPG available on the switch and even one of the best RPGs in general. I never got the chance to play this game on the Wii and I wasn't even familiar with the franchise until Shulk was added into Super Smash Bros. Little did I know that this game would end up being one of my favorite games ever. There are three major things that make an RPG enjoyable to me: The storyline, the combat, and the exploration/environments.

Starting with the storyline, I personally did not understand the hype of this game right off the bat. I won't say I found it boring but I initially didn't think it lived up to the hype it was getting. There's 17 chapters in this game and early on I did not find every single chapter to be amazing story wise. Chapters 1 and 2 were both did a good job with getting my attention and interest. However things started to slow down a little bit from chapters 3 - 6. Again, these chapters weren't unbearably boring but there wasn't anything outstanding or jaw dropping like certain events in chapter 2. I found myself getting completely invested in the storyline after I found my sixth party member, and when I got to chapter 9 I couldn't stop thinking about what would possibly happen next. I didn't see this at the time but the earlier chapters pretty much consisted of meeting new party members and getting to know them. While it isn't very heavy story wise, it really plays a role in learning about your party members and really gets you attached to them. That being said, this games storyline isn't only fantastic among video games, but it even tops plenty of movies and books that I've come across. As shown in the reveal trailer, this game does deal with "the future." This topic has been done plenty of times but Xenoblade manages to do this topic in a way that I haven't really seen done often. What I find amazing though is how unpredictable the game became. Back in middle school I was taught that an essay had to have 6 points: Introduction, rising action, conflict, climax, falling action, and conclusion. However with Xenoblade it only ever got better! Everytime I thought I reached the climax or the main plot point of the game it only turned out to be the tip of the iceberg and I LOVED it. From chapter 9 - 17 I was constantly kept on my toes. My playthrough LITERALLY became the embodiment of the "I don't need sleep I need answers" meme.

Moving on to the combat, I absolutely adore how fresh and unique Xenoblades combat is. It takes the strategy of turn based games like pokemon and proceeds to apply it to real time action. The use of the D-Pad might not be for everyone but thankfully you can switch around your controls with button mapping. That being said, Xenoblades combat has a lot more depth than meets the eye. In fact, Xenoblade is one of the few games I've played where you can beat the hardest post game boss at the lowest level possible assuming you have the right strategy and you're smart enough. (This is only possible through expert mode but my point still remains) I never once got bored of finding new strategies and learning more about the combat. In addition to this, you don't have to worried about being overleveled at any point because expert mode allows you to remove Exp from your party members and store it in a reserve, meaning you can decrease your level however you want without any consequence.

The environments of this game are fantastic, and truthfully I would argue that some areas are even prettier than breath of the wild. I mentioned before that I found some of the early chapters to be nothing special story-wise, but I love that the environments really picked up during these points in the storyline. I found a lot of places where the story lacked, the scenery and environments were so much fun to explore. There's so many places that the game doesn't require you to go too and I love that the game actually rewards you for exploring the areas. Every new landmark and location you find will reward you with Exp and every item you collect can be logged in the "collectopedia" which can get you some pretty useful items in return. However, I think one of my favorite things about this game is the fact that you can encounter level 80 monsters at such a low level, I'll never forget the thrill I got when I first found some of these giant beasts. Not all of them are aggressive so it doesn't really hinder your exploration factor.

Even beyond the environments, combat, and story, there are so many things that deserve attention. The soundtrack was absolutely phenomenal, there were plenty of times where I didn't mind grinding or wandering around aimlessly just because I was admiring the music. The post-game is absolutely massive, there's so much replayability that I can't list it all in this review. All I can say is that this is a must-play. if you're interested at all in buying this DON'T SLEEP ON IT because honestly, it's worth every penny.

This is the perfect JRPG. Fantastic story with twists and turns, endearing characters that are all useful, music is still wonderful to this day, and combat is involved and very rewarding. Side quests all feel the same, but other than that it is now easier than ever to complete side quests. If you have never played Xenoblade Chronicles then you owe it to yourself to finally play it.

Absolutely love the series and love the combat. Characters are easy to relate too and get invested in and the story is epic and great. It’s a long game at least 80-100 hours if you wanna complete everything so you will get your moneys worth with this game

I would personally give the game a 9.5/10, but I can only round to whole numbers. The game's story, while can fall back on anime tropes(including the infamously awkward dialougue and screaming), is brillantly thought out and planned. But I feel the game shines best in its gameplay, the positioning system keeps what would be a fairly good MOBA into something that is constantly engaging. The world is one of the best I have experienced in gaming, it is beautiful, unique, and filled with stuff to do and enemies to fight. All of the characters are worth playing and offer very unique roles and the combat system is filled with depth but remains easily understandable. The music is phenominal and the amount of content the game puts up is massive. The DE version of the game adds quite a bit more than your typical DE version. Graphically the game was improved immensely and performance has improved quite a bit from the Wii version. Various quality-of-life improvements were made. The music was almost completely redone with a real orchestra barring a track or two AND the game offers the ability to use the original tracks for those who prefer it. The game also adds another 15 hours to the game's total length with an additional side story and area. This is likely the best way to remake one of gaming's best. Expand

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is everything I could’ve asked for and more! I didn’t expect much going into Xenoblade DE because I had seen the gameplay and wasn’t really a fan, but after playing it I must say that it is one of the best gameplay experiences I have had! I understand that Xenoblade’s gameplay isn’t for everyone and that tons of other games have considerably better gameplay and graphics. But Xenoblade’s gameplay just fits what I like in a game so well! There’s a ton of strategy involved before and during a fight, which is something I’ve always enjoyed. And the story is amazing and honestly holds up pretty well 10 years later. All of the twists in the game genuinely caught me off guard and shocked me. The world is AMAZING! Every location is amazing in their own way, and the sights in places like Valak Mountain, Eryth Sea, and Satorl Marsh at night are truly some of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen in any form of media, and that is no exaggeration! The music is amazing in every single aspect of the word! The battle themes, especially You Will Know Our Names, Mechanical Rhythm, and Time to Fight from FC get me excited and hyped while pieces like the Fallen Land in Fallen Arm and Valak Mountain’s Night Theme are calming and peaceful. The entire OST is full of amazing tracks that truly captivate you. The characters are amazing and well voiced, especially Shulk. Adam Howden does not get enough praise for his outstanding performance as Shulk. Adam Howden perfectly encapsulates Shulk’s character with his heart wrenching yells and screams to his calm, kind, and warm talking voice. I truly cannot praise this game enough! It has easily become my favorite video game of all time, dethroning BOTW, which speaks numbers about its profound effect on me. I understand that the gameplay may not be the most exciting for a lot of people since it is very niche, but if you are even slightly interested, I cannot recommend this game enough. This game and series are highly underrated and deserve much more praise and acclaim than they already receive. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitige Edition to me is not just a game; it is an experience that can only be truly appreciated once you play it for yourself. All I can say is please buy this game. You will absolutely not regret it.

Fast forward ten years later, I decided to finally jump in with the Definitive Edition, and now I know why this title is so beloved.

There are so many great things about this game, but what I absolutely loved the most are the characters and their relationships with each other. They’re not over the top or following any sort of trope, and the developers absolutely nailed them as this down to earth group of friends with no fluff to them. Aside from that, yeah, the game is just fantastic. Combat is straightforward but technical, environments are beautifully crafted and visually stunning, the story is heartfelt, and the music is absolutely phenomenal. Not only that, once you’ve gotten through the main story, there is more to enjoy in the Future Connected extra story.

There are a few things holding it back, but they’re not anything significant enough to detract from the game. Gear management and quest tracking might be a little unintuitive, and some of the party AI may not be the best. Does it break the game? Certainly not, and these small flaws can easily be overlooked.

I can’t believe I never got to experience this gem until now, but I am certainly glad I got it to experience this remake. I’ve put in 120 hours into without even coming close to completing everything. I see now why this game is adored by so many, and I cannot recommend Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition enough.

I think Shulk having the force instead of the power to see the future could lead to many cool plot points like Shulk dropping a rock on someone's head. I also wish that instead of fighting enemies with weapons, you would debate them with words. A good debate would establish if Shulk has a more valid world view than the enemy he is fighting and would not rely on the old "might makes right" trope that many games with violence fall into. One of the best stories told in any rpg. A huge, immersive world to navigate and an amazing soundtrack that sets the mood in the perfect manner. With so many side quest to go along with the main plot, Xenoblade Chronicles will take at least 70 hours to experience the totality of the what the game entails.
The only drawback to the game is how much time the player needs to invest.

The only drawback to the game is how much time the player needs to invest. Unfortunately, Xenoblade Chronicles is not a smooth progression, as the difficulty heightens severely near the end. Expect to spend HOURS of grinding. However, this can be bi-past by using the 'Casual Mode' option, which I utilized, because I had already invested over 70 hours into the game. That took a lot away from the experience for me. Why a party of three characters at level 75 can't bring down an enemy at level 78 is confusing. It was a huge disappointment investing all that time to just blow through the finale on Casual Mode, because I felt i had no choice.

From twist villains like Mumkahr and Dickson to sprawling areas such as Guar Plain and Valak Snowfields and an engaging combat system, this game proves time and time again that it lives up to the hype. I probably enjoyed this better than Xenoblade 2, Xenoblade 1 has more story, more enjoyable characters so on. That being said Xenoblade 2 is still pretty good but this is much better. I thoroughly enjoyed Xenoblade Chronicles 2, even if with a hiccup here and there, the biggest of which was the character design which, although great, was too much on the freaky-anime side for me (I'm talking about you, girls looking 12 and having early Pamela's boobs). When I saw the design for XC1 DE was a bit more on a "realistic side" (can't believe I said that about design where people have eyes the side of tennis balls), I was on board. 60 hours later I came out a bit disappointed, but still generally entertained.

To get the obvious out of the way, I haven't played the original Wii/DS version, so I'm at the (dis)advantage of not seeing how much the game has improved, or how I could have experience it 10 years ago, and so I have to take it at face value, AD 2020, and I have to admit, save for the character design, XC1 is a bit inferior experience to its younger sibling is basically every aspect. The character progression, the exploration, the combat, almost everything gameplay-wise makes it obvious that XC1 is an older game. But since it’s not that much of an issue (I still had fun with the game’s mechanics), I’ll give it a pass.

What I can’t give a pass to is the story, or, to be more precise, its direction.

Which is as much anime as it gets, with constant revelations of an unimaginable significance every 15 minutes, deus ex machina exploited ad nauseam, the power of friendship and love overcoming literally everything, and heroes and villains shouting "Could it be...?! But it's impossible...!" interchangeably at explosions of light every other cutscene. You can tell that a given villain is not actually a villain the moment you meet them just on the basis of their voice tone, and all the female characters will have huge boobs, skimpy clothes, and the sole purpose of their existence will be to sacrifice themselves for their man, be it a boyfriend, brother, or father, in between cooking for them and doing other housewife stuff. The final revelations regarding the actual nature of the world and what actually is/was going on is actual deep (if not convoluted) philosophical and morally provocative gold (for a video game), but the way to it is filled with so much teenage drama and evil laughter that a gamer over the age of 16 will be reacting to the cutscenes with a smirk and a frown at best. Which, to be honest, seems to be quite typical for a jRPG - to make a game with incredibly deep lore, a head scratching story, complex and multi-layered gameplay, and fill it up with characters who talk and act like they are in a pre-teen school play.

What is unquestionably good in the game is the visuals and the score. The remastered character design is fantastic, most of the locales are beautiful and their exploration is pure joy, especially when paired with great music. This combo works so good that I found myself sightseeing only for the sake of sightseeing, with no particular purpose, just to see stuff and enjoy the atmosphere. The game, in fact, gets much better when you complete the story and do all the side stuff, and feels like a very good MMO (whether it’s an advantage or disadvantage depends on your personal preference).

I also need to commed the collector’s edition, which includes a nice steelbook, a beautiful fat artbook, and a vinyl record (there’s also a poster and some stuff to download), and the quality-content-price ratio is really good (this being said by a person who also bought the collector's edition of FFVII Remake which is total garbage). If it’s your thing to get a collector’s edition of a game now and then, this would be a good choice.

All in all, if you are a jRPG fan, you will have a lot of fun (add 3 points to the score). If you are not, you will not, and possibly you won’t manage to go through the first 10 hours of the game (subtract 2 points from the score). As a person who is somewhat more of a jRPG enthusiast rather than a fan, those 60 hours with the game was generally a time well -spent. But not a minute more.

Xenoblade Chronicles is still one of the best games of the genre, which 10 years later continues to delight and surprise with a unique world, luxurious epic landscapes, an incredible sense of freedom, beautiful music and a really interesting story. Of course, it is a pity that the Definitive Edition has a technical limitation in terms of resolution, which does not allow the image to really shine in 2020, but otherwise it is a chic project that every fan of the genre of adventure and Japanese role-playing games should play.

It’s hard to believe this is a game that released in 2012 and not more recently. Though there are some dated and heavy systems, the atmosphere and a combat system that gives freedom and depth make Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition an RPG for the ages.
