This game is at par with zelda titles. I am enjoying it so much. Great artwork, great progression, and a good story. I think this game is underrated and need more attention.

    Very frustrating to play

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is easily one of the worst jrpgs I've played to date, and I've played a lot. The reasons are many and unfortunately by the look of the Pfff *user score* alot of paid or fanboi reviews artificially bumping up the score. XBC2 is a beast of a game, tedious, boring and downright frustrating to play, but has charming characters and a great story assuming you can force yourself through the morass of downright obnoxious game designs and flaws.

XBC2 suffers from having far too many game mechanics in play, the game world being poorly constructed with areas having widely different monsters in them, with extremely huge level gaps which often could pop up and wipe your party at a moments notice if your not paying attention.

The combat system is unnecessarily and overly complicated with combo after combo after combo being the only real way forward, regular trash mobs often taking several minutes to beat because your arts always reset after each battle making for a substantial uphill grindfest. Consider XBC2 a single player MMO similar to FF14 but with far slower character progression and levelling, this would be the closest explanation on how this game plays out.

The control system is often janky at best, trying to navigate narrow ledges or jump on certain things often leaves your character bugging out whilst the quest system clearly enforces another very obvious grinder for relatively little rewards, but the player does them anyway because its content even if ultimately time consuming and unrewarding, an early case and point is having to rescue a Nopon from monsters, then fetching wood then going back to the quest giver then finding another Nopon then either paying 30,000 in gold or doing another fetch quest to find rarer wood then going back to the original quest giver for 300g / 200 exp reward and a few measily items, bullcrap like this is unfortunately common.

The character designs, story plot and sound though are at least par or even above par and for the switch do the system some justice but ultimately are heavily let down by everything else the game has to offer.

The interesting thing about this game though, it does have the addictive qualities of MMos because it really does feel like your playing on, and that is the only source of fun you'll have most of the time just pretending you'll run into other players to take on a unfair or frustrating raid boss that can cheat or cheese the player resulting in countless wipes until you decide just to overlevel that boss.

Blade grinding again, is another severe uphill grindfest - not only is there a significant amount of cores to find making it almost like pokemon, you'll have to level and grind them up before they'll even be even remotely useful.

I had a good time ! The story is awesome, and graphics are beautiful... but animations are a disaster (WTF!). A very good JRPG

    I like :
    - Story
    - Beautiful Graphics
    - Lifetime
    - the blades ;-) however it's very difficult to understand how the attribution system works
    - Combos

    I don't like :

    - secondary quests... totally useless

I feel like i am fairly qualified to review this game. I've got every rarer blade. beat the game twice. and i feel as if i have experienced the game with everything it has to offer. so do i recommend it. thats tough
for a average person who hasn't played that many JRPG's this is a fairly good entry. it as a descent, but cliche story. and the story is probably the worst out of the series.

for a average person who hasn't played that many JRPG's this is a fairly good entry. it as a descent, but cliche story. and the story is probably the worst out of the series. But it is still an amazing story and it has pretty good characters.

one of the biggest turn offs for people is that the game has a lot of fan-service. many of the character designs are skimpy and the girls are overly exposed, besides Mia. There is also a lot of **** moments in the game design department. These flaws are the reason why this game is a 7 and not a 10. let me list all of the bs aspects of this game at the end.

The music in this game is nowhere near xenogears, or xenoblade 1. It sounds pretty forgettable. also the voice acting is borderline tolerable for a lot of characters. while that could be attributed to having boring cringie dialog, there are some really good voice actors such as Pyra, Mythra, sometimes Rex, Zeke, Mia, and the villeins. everything else seams flat and boring. Tora is especially annoying.

    1. there is a level 80 monster that can one shot you in the opening field. this is not only one time. this is many times and over level monsters are a reacureine appearance in this game. in fact Mor Ardain is crawling with level 80 monsters

    2. some of the boss's are bs as well and require shear luck to beat.

    3. the mini game Tiger Tiger is to tedious and boring. this game is used to level up and get new skills for a couple of new party member's (poppi, I'm not naming this a spoiler because its so early in the game. Its in chapter 1)

    4. Some rare blades (like KOS-MOS) require an obserd amount of grindeing, If you want to get every rare blade its going to be tough.

    5. Mercenary missions are boring and they should have had a mini game for them instead of a real time timer.

in the end i do recommend this game, but it will sometimes test your patience, and durability, take brakes with it, and have a fun time.

Completion: Finished game and a huge number of side quests after approximately 105 hours.

    Pros:
    - Undoubtedly unique . JRPGs, especially turn based ones, are typically thought of as a fairly stagnant genre, but Xenoblade turns the norm on its head through its extremely unique battle and progression systems. Although there are issues, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 deserves to be lauded due to its willingness to push boundaries and try something new.
    - Soundtrack is catch and memorable. There are a number of tracks throughout the game that will undoubtedly stay with me. Some standouts include the Argentum and Mor Ardain themes.
    - Battle system is very different from anything else that is out there right now and requires positioning, strategy, tactics, and proper timing to utilize effectively. This is especially true during the earlier parts of the game where you're still getting used to all the different components of the initially overwhelming system. There are a lot of moving parts and mastering them is satisfying.
    - World is sprawling and fleshed out. Alrest feels like it could be a real place due to the plethora of lore and intrigue surrounding it. The large, sprawling areas also contribute to this through the sense of place that results from exploring and wandering around the myriad fantastical lands.
    - I overall enjoyed the story. The characters are one of the strongest points and Rex was much more likable that I had initially expected. This may be due to me playing with the Japanese voices and not having to deal with some of the strange accents the localization team had decided to implement. The pacing can be too slow at times and comedy is not used well (to put it lightly), but overall the drama of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 did in fact compel me to continue my journey.

    Cons:
    - So many aspects of the game waste an enormous amount of time. The Merc Missions were a great idea to better utilize your full roster. However, constantly going into the menu and having to scroll through pages of menus to get a proper team for these missions is annoying and can take you far out of the immersion of the rest of the world.

Another example of this is in the Blades, which serve as a hybrid being weapons and party members in Xenoblade 2. Making these Blades stronger often requires you to do very specific tasks that make you go far out of your way to do boring tasks such as killing a random mob X times. Although there are ways to get around some of these requirements, they are definitely necessary for progression when it comes to certain Blades and in the earlier sections of the game where you don't have as many Blades to play around with. Furthermore, the drop rates for the Rare Blades are FAR TOO LOW. I understand how the Generic Blades play into the Merc Mission system, but that doesn't make it any more fun to (very slowly) activate dozens of virtually useless Blades.

However, the most egregious example of this lies in the battles themselves. While strategic and fun, every single battle lasts far longer than they have any right to, especially if you aren't massively overleveled. Defeating an enemy 20 levels under you should happen in the blink of an eye, especially for a game like Xenoblade with no random encounters or any sort of discrete transition into battles, but this is definitely not the case here. It quickly became obvious to me that skipping every single mob I could was the only way to beat the game at any reasonable pace. The enemies have massively inflated health through the entire game and that is simply not fun to deal with in a game that is already so long.

    - You don't have to change your strategy much for fighting different enemies. Although there are elemental weaknesses and species-specific items/abilities, they are often too niche to really be effective and used in any sort of active way for 90% of your battles. Although their appearances and stats change, every single enemy in the game just felt too similar to one another in terms of what my approach should be.
    - Map system is awful and oftentimes the only way to progress is to walk through the area that your objective is in countless times before noticing a hidden pathway or area that will let you progress. The map has no detail in the Z-axis and the objective compass can be as deceiving as it is helpful.
    - Frequent FPS/resolution drops. This is egregiously poor in handheld mode.

    Final Word:
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the definition of a flawed masterpiece. The developers reached for the sky and created something truly unique. From playing the game, I am certain that Xenoblade is a game with genuine heart and passion. However, this does not excuse the painfully plodding nature of nearly every aspect of the game, ranging from story to combat. I still enjoyed it - but will forever be disappointed at how incredible the game could've been with just a few more tweaks.

Above all that, it has one of the best musics among all games released in 2017.

It does have some minor flaws which will somehow impact your gameplay experience, some of them are fixed by patches. They are: map system (improved by patches), some UI flow, low resolution on handheld mode.

To sum up, I recommend those who love RPGs, and were familiar with Japanese anime culture (at least not hate that), this game is a must-have for you guys.

And be sure download Japanese V.O package, I don't think the tone of the game is suitable for English V.O, no offense tho, it's just the theme is too J-RPG like.

Prelude: I bought this game mainly because of the promo price from an online store, hype from my local country's Nintendo groups, and basically Switch doesn't have too many game choices after I am done with Zelda and Odyssey.
Honestly I actually felt regretted over this purchase in the beginning due to few reasons. BUT as I proceed through the game, I am starting to get hooked deeper and deeper.
    The plus:
    1. The story is very engaging although I dislike its pace. The story is just like watching an anime (a teen anime to be precise), get hooked by the story and the suspense all over the cut scene. The setting of the story is very fresh and cool for me too. Cloud sea, world tree, titans, salvaging….
    2. The depth of the game. The longer you play the game, the more things you will learn e.g. the VERY DEEP combat mechanics (blade combo auto attack cancel, arts cancel, blade switch), pouch items, affinity, huge item choices to match with your play style, just like your usual JRPG. It’s very satisfying to see all the skills on the affinity charts are unlocked.
    3. Waifu! We have Pyra, Mythra, Morag, etc. Nuff said.
    4. The content. Many things or places to explore. Play it and you will know about it.

    The minus:
    1. The disgustingly bad graphics in handheld mode. The graphic just looks sooooo bad in handheld mode. It’s just very bad until the extent I can’t believe this game runs on a Switch. However, it looks much better in dock mode. Anyway I am just too lazy to play in dock mode (Switch is meant to be primarily played in handheld mode right). And few hours in, you won’t be bugged by the bad graphics anymore lol.
    2. Awkward camera.
    3. Map is somehow hard to navigate for me.
    4. Childish dialogue. Again, get used to it and you will enjoy the game without any problem.
Overall the game has so much potential if the graphics in handheld mode is as good as dock mode.

It's somewhat bad, they fit the dialogue to the british dub and made dumb changes with names, like morag and tora calling rex 'rex-rex' instead of 'big bro' (aniki). However i'm glad nothing plot relevant was changed, the personality of characters seemed intact, I love the entire cast, even the two characters I hated got a really good redemption. I also really appreciate the dual audio and applaud the devs for including it. Because of some minor annoyances like field skills affecting story progression and my playtime glitching,

(I miss Shulk though) There is just so much to explore and it's so much fun. And... music, oh god... I love it. If you don't know what game to buy and want some new game... BUY THIS!

As my first game in the Xenoblade series, I was a little skeptical at first. However after buying and playing the game to completion in about 60 hours, I have to say I'm in love with it.

    Story:
The story is amazing, if not a bit cringy at times. It follows a young salvager named Rex who through certain circumstances becomes the master of an Aegis named Pyra and now must fight to fulfill Pyra's wish of going to Elysium.

The first half of the story is a little slow, but by no means boring. It's the latter half of the story that really gets interesting. I could barely put the console down in the second half of the story because of how mind blowing it was. That's not an exaggeration, whilst playing put aside any theories you have about the ending, because you're likely to be surprised anyway.

Overall i enjoyed the story, it seemed to follow the idea of "you can't do everything alone" a point that is reiterated to Rex by numerous other characters. This phrase is rather important in understanding why the ending happened like it did. However, I will say that you must remember that Rex is a child (15) and as such he is a bit naive and childish, but this doesn't really distract from the story since his strong will more than makes up for it.

    Combat:
The combat in this game is incredible, but can be a bit complex. I've seen some reviewers stating the combat is "slow", but this is only for the start of the game. You can eventually upgrade your character so you can chain driver arts together without a pause in between and even upgrade to the point where you can use all your driver arts at the beginning rather than building them up first.

Remembering all the specialist terms is difficult, but gets more natural the longer you play. By the end of the game I was doing chain attacks with 4 orbs (I've heard some people got up to 6 orbs) and doing ridiculous damage due to the multipliers. The ability to seal an enemies abilities by doing a specific combo is a bold, but genius move. With the right strategy you can seal an enemies strongest ability and then decimate them with a chain attack.

    Graphics:
Now this is one of the reasons it doesn't get a 10 from me. The graphics in handheld mode aren't great, in return the graphics in docked mode are pretty good. My suggestion is to play docked for the story and undocked for farming. I don't really mind the graphics that much since the gameplay, music and story more than make up for it.

    Music:
I don't need to say much, Takahashi stated that all the music they recorded for this game was about 1TB in size, showing just how much they wanted to get it right. The music is absolutely unforgettable, especially the ending music and the ending title screen music which is so good I actually have it on my phone for when I want to relax.

    Post Game:
At the moment I'm level 69 (almost 70) I plan to get every blade, then get them all to S+ affinity and then start NG+ to get the other blades. I don't think I've ever put this much time into a JRPG before, not even FF or DQ.

In the beginning of the game you have very high level unique enemies wandering around the starter zones, I guarantee they'll kill you a few times. However, at end game you can go and teach them a lesson! Furthermore, you have superbosses which are very high level/difficulty bosses that are quite similar to FFXIV extreme trials. You better hope you have a good strategy prepared before the fight.

    Note:
After looking at the negative reviews, I find it hard to believe any of them are actually serious. Quite a lot of the reviews just outright attack anyone who likes this game which is completely inappropriate and makes me think that perhaps they're just there to troll people.

    Conclusion:
This is a prime example of the way JRPG's should be done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is an amazing experience, but I've found myself being frustrated for about a solid 20% of my playthrough. Some game design choices make no sense (for example, there's a level 80 monster that can one-shot you in the STARTING AREA of the game) and most of the events caused by these choices are designed to annoy the player or halt their progress for no reason. The progress of the story, while phenomenal, is often blocked by ability-specific roadblocks towards the end of the game. All these small kinks and more taint an otherwise perfect game. Expand

I thought this was one of the better RPG's I have played in a very very long time. I classify this game as a flawed masterpiece, the flaws are far outweighed by the thing it does right and the immersion factor. The side stories for the individual blades not essential to the main story is something other developers could learn from. I have over 200 hrs into this title and continue to go back for more. I am still 3 blades shy of a complete set of rares and I am now spending time leveling each individual rare blade and still finding new story stuff for them. Expand

A fight with an ordinary enemy whose level is slightly higher can drag on for minutes, especially if you’re fighting it alone. The combat itself is also rife with problems: sometimes main character even fails to draw his weapon, or locks onto a far-off enemy, while another already is eviscerating him in close combat. Despite some rough patches, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a worthy addition to any Switch owner's library, especially if you have a predilection for RPGs and enjoyed either of the previous entries in the series. [Issue #32 – March/April 2018, p. 75]

Extensive and massive JRPG. Although with a rather cliché story and characters, it comes with a beautiful world and a fighting system growing more and more complex with every hour played. [Issue#282]
