I don’t know what it is about Vaccine that makes me such a fan of it. It’s not a good looking game, the controls are stiff and dated, and the game takes so much from Resident Evil that it at times can feel like plagiarism more-so than honoring the source material. Still though, I had a blast playing the game and got a very nostalgic feeling while playing Vaccine. It retails in the US eShop now for $9.99, and I’d say I got more than enough bang for my buck with this title. If you have no appreciation of classic survival-horror, you will hate this game. Me however? I loved it when I was a kid, so I ended up enjoying myself way more than probably anyone else will with Vaccine.

A game which seems to draw a lot from Resident Evil, Vaccine is more than just a clone; it's a hard-as-nails rendition of what the series would be like if it was procedurally generated and smaller in scope. At this they've succeeded, and have managed to weave in some fun to boot. It's not the best Resident Evil clone I've ever played, but it's better than average - and the gameplay twists are both addictive and satisfying in their own right.

The randomised environments at the heart of Vaccine are a clever idea but, like in the Wii U original, serve up a flawed overall experience.

Vaccine isn’t a title I’d recommend even to the most fervent survival horror fans. There just isn’t enough variation to continue playing death after death. Stay away from this one.

Vaccine starts off from an interesting idea and the similarities to the original Resident Evil may raise expectations but unfortunately its concept was not rightly put into place and the result is a game that is built on what's negative - the controls, its very outdated graphics and complete lack of variety - and barely touches what's positive, as its idea gets easily sidelined by its more negative aspects.

I don’t like using this word much, but Vaccine seems like a cynical cash grab. A game that is designed to cash in on the nostalgia of games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, while mixing together elements from today’s school of game design with disappointing results. The presentation feels okay, but the art and style of the game feel awfully run-of-the-mill and generic. Vaccine is tone-deaf to the games it's trying to emulate and misses the mark in almost every department.

The idea of implementing roguelike elements and endless game design in old-school survival horror has potential, but Vaccine fails to capitalise on it. Aspects where the developers could have improved on were perks that could allow a 180-degree turn, a map system, or even a combo system where it can be possible to earn back extra time like Resident Evil's The Mercenaries mode. With much more variety in level design and more enemies, Vaccine could have been an interesting guilty pleasure. In its current state, this seems more like pre-alpha build with many of the features not yet implemented.

One thing makes me give a lower score is the steering - it's akward and backwards.....I don't like that - that's why I'm giving Vaccine a 7.

This game ticks all the right boxes if you are like me and grew up with the classic Resident Evil games. It would be easy to dismiss this game as a cheap rip-off of the RE series but to be honest it's more of a love letter. The game has a simple premise, you have to make your way through a randomly generated mansion in order to help your dying partner. The graphics and sound both scream 1996 and also bare a very close resemblance to the mansion and music from Resident Evil 1. Sometimes it feels so similar, it could be classed as plagiarism, however the game has enough character to feel like it's own entity and not just a blatant rip-off. I've owned the game for three days now and already sunk around 10 hours into it which is surprising, I was really not expecting much when I purchased it. So my advice to any potential buyers is simple, if you're a fan of Resident Evil, buy it right now and enjoy a blast to the past. Sure it has its bugs and control issues, but nothing a veteran of the classics won't feel right at home with. I actually found the controls to be very nostalgic and endearing. So go on, have fun people and stop following the other sheep! Full Review »
