  • Summary: Thimbleweed Park is the curious story of two washed up federal agents called in to investigate a dead body found in the river just outside of town, bloated and pixelated from a death some too soon.

Maniac Mansion came first, and Monkey Island is more famous, but Thimbleweed Park is the finest, most thoughtful Ron Gilbert game yet. [Issue #30 – November/December 2017, p. 22]

By all accounts, Thimbleweed Park on the Switch looks and plays very much like its PC counterpart that I played several months ago. Just as was the case then, this is a must-have for point and click adventure gamers who either don’t have it on PC or prefer to play on Switch.

Apart from the PC version, which still wins thanks to mouse and keyboard controls, this is the best way to experience the ironic masterpiece called Thimbleweed Park. Don't let the old school vibe turn you off: thanks to the Casual mode, this is a timeless classic that should be played by anyone who was born and raised between the late '70s and the early '90s.

Point-and-click beginners may struggle with the myriad puzzles Thimbleweed Park lays across its curiosity-piquing plot, but its developers have rightfully made it possible to get ahead even when all you see are dead ends, with the inclusion of the tips line. It means that what would have been an essential only for a very specific audience is, with no explicit fail states, easy for anyone to not just enjoy, but actually finish. And going around for a second time is still a treat, much as Monkey Island et al were, as you can clearly see all the pieces of the grander picture coming together to comprise a fascinating whole, climaxing with one of gaming’s better twists.

Thimbleweed Park just might be too 1980s for a lot of people, but for anyone else who is willing to play through this tale, you’re in for a hell of a good time. While some of the puzzles will be painful and you’ll slap yourself for not getting them right away, that’s half the fun. A humorous story, great characters and just that good old feel make Thimbleweed Park a treasure worth checking out

Thimbleweed Park is a wonderful love letter about everything that made 1980s games great. The Switch probably has the best console version due to the touch screen controls, as the physical controls can be a chore if you’re playing on the TV. With such a focus maintained on nostalgia I’m not really sure someone who likes Telltale’s adventure games are going to appreciate Thimbleweed Park. Regardless, there’s enough humor and witty writing to keep gamers of all ages entertained.

Minor scrolling stutters aside, Thimbleweed Park plays just as well on Switch as on any other platform, with the advantage this time of being both portable where touch controls rule supreme and playable on the bigger screen like its peers. A missed opportunity lies in the lack of pointer controls to which the Joy Con would have lent themselves pretty well, but it still offers no less than the other versions. Rather more than those, in fact, making this version arguably the best one anyone could want.

I gotta say i was a bit skeptical when i bought this game. Skeptical that i would enjoy it. I was definitely wrong. The game is very fun. I would have given it a perfect score but some of the puzzles were just about impossible to solve without Googling the answer. I did get a real X-Files/Twin Peaks vibe while playing. Definitely a must buy if you enjoy point and click puzzle adventure games and aren't afraid to have to use your brain. Expand

Expand

The detective work is fun. The meta-humor veers between cute and "Jesus Christ we get it." The Twin Peaks trope is fine, if you like Twin Peaks.

But some puzzles are pretty stupid. You will get stuck because every objective requires some mundane object that cannot be found in any of the logical places nor in most of the illogical ones. Like, I need to make printer ink from scratch so I can print a job application? I need to hunt for the only dime in town so I can use the pay phone? I'm an FBI agent investigating a murder and I only brought one piece of film for the Polaroid? And this is considered "adventure"? Never mind the side objective that is a literal pixel hunt. Luckily, there is a hint line that helps you overcome these blatant attempts to waste your time.

Get it when it's on sale.

There are many puzzles here with confusing nonsensical sequencing and peak moon logic. This game does a fantastic job bringing back to the era of the point in click adventure game. That is to say tediously pixel hunting the environment and testing every combination of item and character/object to hopefully progress the game in some very obtuse way. The story of this game starts interesting enough but I'll just say the ending and back half of the story is so terrible that it murders any goodwill the game may have garnered up until that point. Don't play this game. If you must don't be a fool like me and just grab a walkthrough for the entire thing Expand
