The Last Remnant remastered is a great way to remember the time when jRPG was able to experiment new mechanics.

The Last Remnant Remastered does a decent job at treating a JRPG from over ten years ago to the contemporary age. If its combat system remains one of the game's biggest selling points, the dearth of life throughout the game's world is one of the negative inheritances of The Last Remnant's original time. That said, this remaster is something that deserves attention, especially from fans of JRPGs.

The Last Remnant Remastered is a unique JRPG that finds a good home on Switch. Older issues have mostly been ironed out, and while it's unoriginal, it's still charming enough to enjoy. Maybe wait for a sale, but a decent game to while away the hours.

After more than a decade, this JRPG lives a second youth on Switch making us experience a deep and chaotic combat system as well as a long story that is compensated by various improvements and a worthy graphic section that will make this title a great option for fans of the genre.

This remaster brings a few quality of life improvements that make the experience a bit less cumbersome to sit through, and the visual uplift is definitely welcome. However the latter can't help the mediocre English voice acting, and the fact that its character animations have aged terribly, despite the character art itself being good, coupled with the scenery itself having a level of detail that belongs in the PS2 era. That combination of factors means it will be very hard to get into for most newcomers. Those that stick with it long enough, and put in the unusually big effort required to truly grasp all its ins and outs, will find a good JRPG story a few hours in, just one with hit and miss production values.

From a technical point of view, the work done in this Switch version of The Last Remnant Remastered is remarkable : the visuals are stunning, even on portable mode. Alas, the intricacy of the combat system and the world design in general, inherent in the game itself, are not very engaging.

This game had issues at launch, particularly it’s unbalanced combat system, but over a decade later these issues stand in stark relief. Ultimately, even if everything else were great, and the combat system worked exactly like they wanted, the game would still feel unfair. And in a 100+ hour JRPG, that constant grinding unfairness will poison any joy a game can create. There are times where I enjoy playing it, but always know a kick in the teeth is lurking around the corner.

The Last Remnant is a fascinating and frustrating experience. Beneath a fundamentally mediocre game are a lot of interesting ideas. The story is epic and interesting, but only in parts. The battle system is wholly unique and feels massive in scope. Except you have to play the game for hours and hours before it becomes any fun. The Switch is full of quality RPG ports at the moment, and there are plenty more coming. The Last Remnant is not one of them.

The Last Remnant Remastered is the sort of game that we wish we could recommend more highly. Though it has plenty of interesting ideas, like the Union battle system and the SaGa-esque character progression, these are all so mired in obscurity and confusion that their impact is considerably lessened or nullified outright. The Last Remnant Remastered is the best ‘bad’ RPG out there; it’s a game that undeniably has some excellent qualities, but it can never manage to get out of its own way. If you can get past the hokey tutorials and confusing mechanics, The Last Remnant Remastered on the Switch stands as one of (if not the) best versions available, as the enhanced visuals and quality of life improvements are now offered alongside the ability to play on the go. We’d give this one a very light recommendation; if you’re an RPG nut and you have the mettle to get through the more frustrating entries of the genre, this is the game for you. If not, we’d recommend you take a pass.

It looksI really really enjoyed this Remasterd version on the Switch. I played the 1st version on the 360 and loved that onen as well. It looks sharper, the shadows and animations look like they have been renewed in alot of ways. I knock it 1 point because of the combat and sometimes the storys feels like a filler but only here and there. Glad it came to switch. Nice to see more RPG's on it, then the hundreds of 8 bit rpgs the Switch puts out endlessly. Full Review »

After some research on the web, I found out not being the only one. Shame, Square Enix normally stands for quality - not this time! Hopefully they will launch a patch Full Review »
