By far one of the best visual novels out there, both the art and the music are outstanding, and it's rare to find writing so solid and compelling in this medium. Its aesthetic and the quality of the story also make it a great title for all sorts of newcomers to the visual novel medium. I can't wait to find out what the developers have in store next.

This is, hands down, the best visual novel I've ever read. The music, the atmosphere, and the characters themselves all come together in a beautiful tale. Everything is perfect.

I had heard good things about this. The art style was nice. Thought I would give it a go.

It's basically an anthology of stories set in a mysterious mansion with a history of tragedies.

The first story was really promising! In isolation I'd say it was a really good 7 or 8 out if 10. After that, however, is where things really started to fall apart. Every story follows a similar pattern after that. It's all written in the manner of a 14 year old who's not good at writing. I don't know if it's just due to the bad translation but it was next to unbearable.

There were scenes that went on for way to long where a character would have one opinion and the other character would be trying to change that opinion. The scene would basically be one character saying "I'm going to do x" over and over and the other character would be saying "No. Please don't do that. Do y instead." and they would repeat this over and over and over and over and over to the point where I was just skipping through to the end of the scene where the character did inevitably change their mind.

Because I had heard such good things about it I persevered hoping that at some point it would get good... But it never did. It never did. To see this averaging 100 on critic reviews on Metacritic is completely ludicrous. They must be on crack.

I didn't like it at all. Story was very boring and this game has hardly any actual gameplay. Not recommending to actual gamers.

This game is simply fantastic. I'm not sure it's a perfect game but on of the best visual novels I have ever read. If you're looking for a very interactive experience (ala Danganrompa, this is not for you). If you are looking for a fantastic story, buy this.

I recall when I first experienced the story I was baffled like many others about the nature of the VN. There are very few choices and no voiced lines, but after sitting and reading through the first couple of hours I realized that the story worked best this way. There are no mundane choices giving the player a false sense of control. In this case, we are observers to the story as it plays out. In retrospect, I think the story is masterfully conveyed. I had my mouth glued to the floor as the mysteries unraveled themselves one by one in this tragic tale. It's hard to express the amount of love I have for this game without spoiling anything, so all I can recommend is to sit back, relax, and let yourself get absorbed into the world. Expand

"These are not your tragedies and, because they are not yours, you observe while holding onto your self and sanity. However, we will soon be seeing your tragedies; your pain, your torment, the secrets and memories you tried so hard to forget and bury. Will your mind keep its sanity or will you be swallowed by the darkness?"

The House in Fata Morgana is a Grand Guignol of the highest order. The story is cut from the finest cloth and the characters are human to the core. This is a story that surpasses the Count of Monte Cristo, Brothers Karamazov, and every work of fiction I have read thus far.
Not only is the writing superb, but it is paired with a haunting musical score and an art style that is as indistinct and hazy as the Fata Morgana itself.

This is a story of human tragedy born out of human nature. Tragedies spring from the lies we tell ourselves, the lies we tell others, the preconceptions we hold so dearly, the expectations of family and society, and finally the unalterable nature of birth and the tragedies that come from genetics.
There are no fairy tales here. No character truly and utterly evil and no character truly pure and good. Any such thing you may encounter is merely a fabrication. A lie meant to keep you from the truth.
This story lays bare the raw pain and torment a human can inflict upon another. It explores these torments with tact and finesse to lead you down a long and grueling journey in search of truth.

What are the circumstances behind these tragedies? Can one person's perspective really tell the complete story?

The story rejects convention and the constraints of genre. It is true literature that seeks to convey messages and truths through its words. It accomplishes this goal so very well. it shows you a range of human behavior, relationships, and emotion born about through shared pain and extreme circumstances. A hatred that spans the centuries, and a love that spans equally long.

In going down this journey, I wish to convey words of advice.
As this is a visual novel, you will be asked to make choices so:
Do not avert your eyes from the truth. Even if the past holds nothing but pain, secrets must be revealed, the story must be told, and only then can an honest dialogue and communication begin.
You are hungry, thirsty......weary. As you limp across the path, the trees open up and.... as if from another reality....... a mansion looms before you. Something in the air seems indistinct or unreal. But you knock on the door.... to the House in Fata Morgana.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There were few little flaws mainly at the end of the story (for example I didn't liked when it turned into semi-comedy scenes with Georges painting - it just felt out of place, not blending well with overall game atmosphere) and also some scenes were overdone like too much of "aah aaaa haaa" especially in "Beast" story which in my opinion was the worst overall.
Anyway, in general it was quite great experience. The story was mysterious and held in suspense. It stimulates to analyze tiny bits of hints and theoretize about the true nature of bizzare situation you've end up after you lost all memories about who you are and past events. The very ending was kind of predictable though.

I absolutely loved this. What an incredible tale of tragedy and layered consequences of selfish actions. The story is a slow burn and takes a bit of time to set the stage, but really comes with the gut punches in the fourth act. I don't want to spoil anything, so just strap in and let this game enrapture you.

My favorite VN of all time

Fata is a story about humanity, in a way. What makes people commit the actions they commit, how we influence others, and how we're influenced, and how we learn to love, to open up, to accpet others into our lives, and most importantly, finding it within ourselves to understand each other. Fata does this to such a great extent, in a way that doesn't feel cliched

Fata does this to such a great extent, in a way that doesn't feel cliched or in a way that feels forced. Throughout the course of it, you see the worst of people, and yet you see what causes "the worst" in them. There's never something as simple as "good and evil", and people never are under those two labels. People are people, because we are forged by others, whether good and bad. It's an incredibly potent message, and its amplified so well through the protagonist, who experiences this through their own character journey and through others, and how they begin to open up, and cause others to open up at the same time, and allow them to understand others.

I felt connected to every character by the end, truly, even the ones that I didn't like at the beginning. Also, for someone with trauma, this game was INCREDIBLY cathartic. The lessons it teaches about emotional vulnerability, forgiveness, and so many other mental health topics is profound, to say the least. I beat the PS4 version of this game in 2019 and have not stopped thinking about it since. The switch version is even better, easily the best VN on the system. While there are not as many choices as in other visual novels, the choices that do occur actually matter and lead to endings much more directly. People have likely complained that there's no voice acting so you have to actually READ (gasp!) the text, but 1.) most of the soundtrack has vocals, and 2.) voice acting would actually ruin some of the suspense.
Anyway, tldr, this game is the most amazing thing I've seen in a long, long time. If you want to support a small and passionate indie dev team and a female head writer, get this game.

The House in Fata Morgana is over 40 hours long, and in those 40 hours, you'll maybe get to make about three decisions. It is a visual novel in the strictest sense of the word, and you must be prepared for that going in. But with a fantastic, original, slow-burn story about love, loss, hurt, forgiveness, and recovery, it's one of the best visual novels out there — and your patience will be paid off in the end.
