I haven't finished yet but I am a little disappointed. It's my first time playing through this and at first it looked nice and interesting. But further into it, I think it's not as good as what I expected seeing the score on vndb/steam/metacritic.

The artstyle is not totally consistent. It is still okay though.

This as the highest rated game of all time? Really? It's not even that good, it's fine as a visual novel, but it's not much outside of that

Yes there is reading and that is not the problem here. The problem is WHAT you are reading. Its a 5-6 hours worth of good content stretched into meaningless chitter chatter about absolutely nothing, ending up with more than 20 hours of reading. And for what!?

In fact, someone here said you need high IQ to read this, and that's completely wrong. You infact need zero IQ to be reading this

In fact, someone here said you need high IQ to read this, and that's completely wrong. You infact need zero IQ to be reading this stuff, its quite bland and not worth your time. Most conversations are quite useless, they'd have a snippet of story, and the rest would be just useless kiddy banter.

But again, the story overall is good, the twists are interesting. Only hope the stories would have been more to the bloody point and concise, rather than stretching it for miles and miles. (yes reading an abridged version of this story would be really recommended)

I would suggest this for 15 year olds. This isnt for the kids, and for the adults, I would suggest them to read the synopsis on wikipedia and not waste time.

And if you've read visual novels before, and know there are usually such irritating conversations in them, then this could be a good visual novel after all.

The most catchy critics of history! There are many games in history that have a better storyline. For example, Shadow Of Destiny, Grim Fandango, and the Neverhood. Sorry for all the critics!

no tiene sentido la nota de este juego. Dudo bastante que sea por creces superior a casi cualquier juego en la historia.

Having finally reached a proper ending, I'm left with very mixed feelings.

It started off nicely with enough mystery and intrigue to reel me in. The writing was a bit stilted but didn't bother me at first. The story, at its core, is truly compelling. The way the seemingly unconnected stories slowly unravel and interweave is incredibly impressive but there is so much redundancy and unnecessary sub-plot. I don't feel like any of the "choices" it occasionally offers do anything but sandbag the reader if unlucky enough to pick the wrong option. There are some really exciting moments, but, man, does it drag. The plentiful dialogue feels unnaturally bloated the way a lot of Japanese-translated games do. The final climax was intense and emotional. I was on the edge of my seat, tears welling up in my eyes - very moving stuff - but then it just kept going! On and on, cast credits, epilogue upon epilogue, staff credits, more epilogue. A proper narrator and a discriminating editor would have done this game so much good! It would have been better as a regular novel in my opinion.
I went in with an open mind and tempered expectations but it was a bumpy ride for all its high points.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. House in the fata morgana's gothic presentation and otherworldly, Bjork-like music come together to create a unique and compelling atmosphere, however I found the characters, pacing and overall story lacking. The game is split into chapters or "doors". The first 3 doors, the worst being the 3rd, are uneventful and frankly boring. The only thing keeping me going was the mystery surrounding the Maid and titular Morgana. Things picked up with the 4th door and the the narrative plays with perspective and who each character really is in interesting and compelling ways. It should however be noted that you can entirely miss the second half of the game by not clicking on a dialogue option within 3 seconds. It doesn't warn you about this and I had to look up a walkthrough after the game abruptly came to an end. Thankfully the second half was much better than the first and kept me guessing what was going to happen next. The true ending however, of 8 possible endings, was predictable and I was left thinking "is that it?" Thematically, the story is about love and forgiveness, but neither is explored particularly originally. And most of the characters, barring Michel, are one-note. The dialogue is also extremely verbose. Characters witter on endlessly about the same topic repeatedly or about nothing consequential and drag out the run time. This is also a very long game for a visual novel, around 40 hours. Maybe my expectations were too high going into the game given the metascore. I went in expecting Shakespeare and got something good, not great, let alone a masterpiece. I stayed for the atmosphere, but would have a hard time recommending it to someone else. 6/10. Expand

The House in Fata Morgana is over 40 hours long, and in those 40 hours, you'll maybe get to make about three decisions. It is a visual novel in the strictest sense of the word, and you must be prepared for that going in. But with a fantastic, original, slow-burn story about love, loss, hurt, forgiveness, and recovery, it's one of the best visual novels out there — and your patience will be paid off in the end.

I think fans of gothic literature, visual novels and/ or engrossing stories will find something to love about this game. Just know that if you start it, you've got to reach the end to really appreciate what it has to offer. [Issue #55 – October 2021, p. 28]

The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition is a long and finely constructed visual novel. It promises an intricate plot of suspense, intrigue and revenge for anyone willing to commit forty or more hours to the story.
