This is absolutely one of the most impactful works I have ever experienced. It's hard to describe the story without spoiling it -- but I'll say that what makes this work special is the degree to which it explores human cruelty, revenge, hated, and forgiveness, especially the power that forgiveness has on the forgiver. It's a topic that has rarely been handled so well in any medium.

On top of that, it has an absolutely amazing soundtrack, plus beautiful artwork in a unique art style. If you even remotely like visual novels, I cannot recommend The House in Fata Morgana highly enough.

I absolutely loved this. What an incredible tale of tragedy and layered consequences of selfish actions. The story is a slow burn and takes a bit of time to set the stage, but really comes with the gut punches in the fourth act. I don't want to spoil anything, so just strap in and let this game enrapture you.

    2) It is mainly a kinetic novel, meaning there are only choices with multiple endings and it mainly follows a linear storyline, so those who play the game expecting gameplay or puzzles, its not for you.
3)Its a massive 44hrs+ game according to howlongtobeat , so there can be something you don't like.
    4) first two gates are among the weakest and 4 gates only serve as prologue, so don't dislike the game only based on 4 chapters, kindly atleast complete the fifth one before making your decision on game.
5)The people blaming it to be not a game but a novel, the game genre literally says "visual novel", i.e novel with visuals, what else you think it will consist of?
6)About the people here saying about the 100 meta score, well it cant be said anything from meta score, only user score matters as there are many good games with no meta score or bad meta score. honestly no one should care about that score.
Check the game features from user reviews and gameplay before buying to know what you are paying for. You cant like all type of games. If you like fps games like GTA, it is expected you will dislike this game, the game has no issue.

The House in Fata Morgana is one of the benchmark masterpieces of its medium, and whether you've played your fair share of visual novels before or are completely new to this type of storytelling and just want to experience something different, it is worth every penny.

Calling visual novels "games" comes with its own complicated debate, but Fata Morgana does indeed have choices and the possibility for multiple (including bad endings). So if that's your deciding factor on the matter, best to let you know upfront. Game play however, is not why this title is so highly regarded. As the story of the cursed mansion and your role within it unfolds, it is difficult not to be completely engrossed and emotionally enamored with its beautifully unsettling atmosphere, complicated characters that are slowly revealed piece by piece and re-contextualized with each new chapter, and a story that rivals the absolute best the "gothic haunted house" genre has to offer in literature and film. While Fata Morgana is ultimately concerned with exploring the depths of unspeakable, horrific tragedy, unlike many other stories that also aim to tear out your heartstrings, every event feels earned and unavoidable (like classic tragedy should). To say anymore about the direction it takes would be giving away too much.

As far as the Switch edition is concerned, this remaster comes with both sequel follow-ups (Requiem for Innocence and Reincarnation) and well as additional side stories, epilogues, updated art work (especially its backgrounds), and bonus features. There is also a backdoor mode, so if you have read Fata Morgana before, but maybe not its follow-ups, you can easily skip around without needing to put away 20+ hours on a story you don't want to re-read right away.

If you love good storytelling, go in knowing nothing. I’ve seen both hardcore visual novel fans and complete newcomers fall in love with this game and I promise its worth the jump.

What may be unsettling for many users would be its format, traversing multiple routes may not be a satiable cup of tea for the average VN player but if you're familiar with mediums like Umineko already, then don't fret just immerse yourself and you'll be lost within the gaze of the abyss before you know it.

The final element that makes FataMoru laudable would be its soundtrack. The criteria for soundtracks to be audible aren't simply itself but whatever sceneries it encapsulates: in this regard, Fata Morgana excels in splendor and the simulacra of the plot emanates rigorously with it.

The House in Fata Morgana, if not the best VN of the decade, might as well stand by itself as the most enticing VN in the legends. Don't waste your time any further and get right into the train that is a millennium long journey.

Most of the negative user reviews are people who are mad an “anime book” can get a perfect critic score or people who are unfamiliar to VNs and were expecting something different.

The House in Fata Morgana is excellent. I’ve read nearly 100 VNs, and it still stands out to me as one of the most unique and heartfelt. It’s a horror/mystery VN set in a mansion, where the protagonist (“You”) travels through four doors set in different time periods to unravel the mystery. There’s a ton of depth to this game that doesn’t show up at a first glance, and the story is extremely moving and emotional with a ton of twists and turns along the way. The characters are the highlight of the game and feel very real and human, and eventually you’ll begin to genuinely care about them and their stories like they’re real people. All of them are very flawed individuals, but that doesn’t make you love them any less. FataMoru really shows how the visual novel medium can shine through its art and music. As you can see from the box art, the VN doesn’t use a typical anime style but instead has a more realistic painting style that’s very charming and somewhat creepy — fitting with the theme of the game. All of the CGs are beautifully painted and express a lot of emotion in them, making the experience much more rich. The OST is one of my favorites for any game, beautiful orchestral pieces accompanied by Portuguese lyrics. The soundtrack has a ton of different genres and greatly amplifies the emotional impact of FataMoru’s scenes. Both the art and music come together to make an already special VN even more unique. Overall, I highly recommend you give The House in Fata Morgana a chance, even if you’re new to VNs. It’s definitely one of the best and most unique VNs out there, and it’s a story that’ll stick with you for a long time.

I have every version of this title available in English, and I can say that this is easily my favourite VN series (not that I've read a ton). It's highly recommended, even to people who aren't into anime games (since only one game in this collection even fits that description). Actually, this series appeals more to my fondness for Europe, its history and the stories some of its buildings could tell than any fondness I have for Japan and its media. In fact, there are times when it's easy to forget I'm reading a script that was translated from Japanese.

That said, note that these are VNs through and through, with no real gameplay. The first game, and its prequel to an extent, are the only ones with choices. They only affect the story in the first game though, and even in that case, the alternate paths are all dead ends. The third game and the extra stories are all entirely kinetic. Be warned, as this kind of game isn't for everyone.

That said, if you want a great story, you'll find it here. I'm not actually going to spoil any of the plot points, but suffice to say, I highly recommend it. It is a tragedy, so keep that in mind. I'll also say that there are two humps to the story that some people may have difficulty getting past, the first of which is the part of the game where it appears to be an anthology of sorts. However, once you're able to get far enough into the story, I'll just say that it's unforgettable.

I'm impressed that this title managed a perfect Metascore of 100. I'm sad that it will never get the awards and recognition it deserves in the mainstream, but I'll take it being immortalized as the top Switch game.

There are no mundane choices giving the player a false sense of control. In this case, we are observers to the story as it plays out. In retrospect, I think the story is masterfully conveyed. I had my mouth glued to the floor as the mysteries unraveled themselves one by one in this tragic tale. Beautiful visually, beautiful musically, and beautiful in its story-telling. There's so much content as well. I felt connected to every character by the end, truly, even the ones that I didn't like at the beginning. Also, for someone with trauma, this game was INCREDIBLY cathartic. The lessons it teaches about emotional vulnerability, forgiveness, and so many other mental health topics is profound, to say the least. I beat the PS4 version of this game in 2019 and have not stopped thinking about it since. The switch version is even better, easily the best VN on the system. While there are not as many choices as in other visual novels, the choices that do occur actually matter and lead to endings much more directly. People have likely complained that there's no voice acting so you have to actually READ (gasp!) the text, but 1.) most of the soundtrack has vocals, and 2.) voice acting would actually ruin some of the suspense.
Anyway, tldr, this game is the most amazing thing I've seen in a long, long time. If you want to support a small and passionate indie dev team and a female head writer, get this game.

"These are not your tragedies and, because they are not yours, you observe while holding onto your self and sanity. However, we will soon be seeing your tragedies; your pain, your torment, the secrets and memories you tried so hard to forget and bury. Will your mind keep its sanity or will you be swallowed by the darkness?"

The House in Fata Morgana is a Grand Guignol of the highest order. The story is cut from the finest cloth and the characters are human to the core. This is a story that surpasses the Count of Monte Cristo, Brothers Karamazov, and every work of fiction I have read thus far.
Not only is the writing superb, but it is paired with a haunting musical score and an art style that is as indistinct and hazy as the Fata Morgana itself.

This is a story of human tragedy born out of human nature. Tragedies spring from the lies we tell ourselves, the lies we tell others, the preconceptions we hold so dearly, the expectations of family and society, and finally the unalterable nature of birth and the tragedies that come from genetics.
There are no fairy tales here. No character truly and utterly evil and no character truly pure and good. Any such thing you may encounter is merely a fabrication. A lie meant to keep you from the truth.
This story lays bare the raw pain and torment a human can inflict upon another. It explores these torments with tact and finesse to lead you down a long and grueling journey in search of truth.

What are the circumstances behind these tragedies? Can one person's perspective really tell the complete story?

The story rejects convention and the constraints of genre. It is true literature that seeks to convey messages and truths through its words. It accomplishes this goal so very well. it shows you a range of human behavior, relationships, and emotion born about through shared pain and extreme circumstances. A hatred that spans the centuries, and a love that spans equally long.

In going down this journey, I wish to convey words of advice.
As this is a visual novel, you will be asked to make choices so:
Do not avert your eyes from the truth. Even if the past holds nothing but pain, secrets must be revealed, the story must be told, and only then can an honest dialogue and communication begin.
You are hungry, thirsty......weary. As you limp across the path, the trees open up and.... as if from another reality....... a mansion looms before you. Something in the air seems indistinct or unreal. But you knock on the door.... to the House in Fata Morgana.

However, I’m using the term “game” broadly. I have seen those stupid clickbait articles saying “Is Fata Morgana better than Zelda BotW or Mario Odyssey?” or some other ridiculous variation… And I believe the answer is that you can’t compare THIFM with what people traditionally think of as “game”. It sounds weird, but this game does not have gameplay at all, no great bosses, no level design… In fact, not even compared with other graphic novels I have played, in which there are way more decision points and timed choices or weird control maneuvers to spice things up gameplay-wise… There is not much of that here. I see why some people do not consider it a game in the strict sense. So be careful, because even if it is a great game, maybe it is not your cup of tea.

THIFM is more like a book, a more innovative book that not only provides the story through plain text, but gives you also great and immersive music, art, and a sense of aesthetics and presentation that fits the general atmosphere of each section (happy, scary, nostalgic, dramatic) and takes the story to the next level. I believe the developer takes a traditional book, and elevates it using all these different aspects made available by the gaming platform (pacing, delivery, presentation, music, art…) very effectively, creating an amazing experience. I’m confident this story (if properly written and paced) would have been great in a traditional book… I mean, the story in itself is great! But the other ingredients make it much better, much in the same way that a tabletop game sometimes feels better and new in a console thanks to quirks and design decisions that expand on the concept.

THIFM is long; it starts as if you will see a series of short stories, and unfolds slowly towards what ends up being a long and intricate narrative. For me it was a bit frustrating as I wanted to finish it and finally discover what the whole deal was about, so when other chapters kept appearing it felt a bit like grinding. I wish I knew in advance its expected length, I’d have enjoyed it more… In a book you know how many pages are left so you have some awareness of how much is still ahead… With the game it is different, and it was difficult for me to have a general idea of how much progress I was making, as I felt I was about to finish and boom! Another 10 hours of gameplay…

THIFM takes its time to present its characters and unfold its story. Sometimes it felt as if there was a dialogue between characters that was unnecessary and not moving the plot forward… You are all engaged and wanting to see how everything will fit and the characters end up talking about roses or how nice the sea was or how long it will take for a train to be ready… So in that aspect it might feel a bit longer than needed. However, I believe this is a crucial aspect of the game, as it makes all characters and situation in each specific era feel more real and deep… Through this apparently superficial exchanges you get to know these characters intimately… They give you a glimpse of their fears, their wants, their internal conflicts… And that gives more power to the whole story… So, when you are presented with the more dramatic portions you really feel the rage and sadness as if all the awful things narrated happened to a dear friend.

I played this game on my switch in portable mode, lying in bed all engrossed as 9 PM turned into 3 AM and I kept advancing and advancing… There are some portions of the game that I wish I had seen in TV mode, and I feel the game will be effective on any platform, as long as you give it time to grow and develop and take the story as it comes… If you love good stories and twists, try it and prepare for 30+ hours of great characters, settings and stories.

TLDR; The House in Fata Morgana might not be for everyone, but if you love reading and like fiction, it is one of the greatest gaming experiences available on Nintendo Switch. Do not miss it!

Fata does this to such a great extent, in a way that doesn't feel cliched or in a way that feels forced. Throughout the course of it, you see the worst of people, and yet you see what causes "the worst" in them. There's never something as simple as "good and evil", and people never are under those two labels. People are people, because we are forged by others, whether good and bad. It's an incredibly potent message, and its amplified so well through the protagonist, who experiences this through their own character journey and through others, and how they begin to open up, and cause others to open up at the same time, and allow them to understand others.

A story that gives you a meaningful experience and perspective like when I read past the prologue in Vinland Saga for the first time. Like all great stories and even masterpieces they are not for everyone, but at the end of it all, these stories did what they set out to do masterfully and The House In Fata Morgana did so in stride.

The story in The House in Fata Morgana is an extremely impactful web woven together carefully and in a very natural and believable manner within its own narrative, allowing the many vibrant and intricate charaters that you will grow to either love, hate, or at least understand thrive within it. The characters that thrive within this story are complex, fickle, cruel, kind, weak, strong, and most of all human. Along with the masterfully done plot and characters it is coupled with a soundtrack just as impressive and used in the right way for all the right moments to help envelope you in the history of the mansion as the maid takes your hand and guides you through it, imploring you to never let go.

The character art and backgrounds really standout in this visual novel especially among other visual novels in a great way. The style of art used compliments the story perfectly for the tone it has set, from the backgrounds to the character art.

The additional stories included in the Dreams of Revenant edition add greatly to the base experience, with Requiem of Innocence despite being more linear in it's narrative rivaling the main story and in my opinion just as emotionally impactful.

My hope is that you will allow the story to open the door to yourself as you open it's doors and find the same faint yet powerful sense of hope that can be found within this beautiful and grim narrative to it's climax along side the characters.

There were few little flaws mainly at the end of the story (for example I didn't liked when it turned into semi-comedy scenes with Georges painting - it just felt out of place, not blending well with overall game atmosphere) and also some scenes were overdone like too much of "aah aaaa haaa" especially in "Beast" story which in my opinion was the worst overall.
Anyway, in general it was quite great experience. The story was mysterious and held in suspense. It stimulates to analyze tiny bits of hints and theoretize about the true nature of bizzare situation you've end up after you lost all memories about who you are and past events. The very ending was kind of predictable though.

It makes me go nuts when people think because they don't like something or they find it boring it means the game is bad. This kind of mindset should not exist for review pages.

This is a pretty good visual novel, it's not a masterpiece, but it's pretty good. This novel has amazing music, good art and good writing. The music itself hits pretty hard in some parts of the story. There is a lot of endings. If you like reading, have patience and enjoy tragic stories you will probably like this novel. Just like many novels, don't expect action or anything like that very early on. Chapter 3 broke my hearth; it felt pretty real and taught me how dangerous miscommunication is.

You know how games like Hotline Miami are best enjoyed with headphones and high volume? Well I think visual novels like this one are best enjoyed at night. PLEASE remember that a VISUAL novel before a game, its a novel:).

This is my first visual novel and I genuinely enjoyed it. The story is intense and touchy, with quite a bit of twists. The character development and story build-up are top-notch. Music fits the scenes very well and are quite memorable and beautiful that I started listening to the OST on Youtube. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't enjoy reading. Excellent story, although convoluted at times. It's over a year since I finished this "game" and it has definitely been memorable.

One of the best VNs of all time. I couldn't put it down. I'm actually more surprised that it's not a mainstream game. The story, OST, and art are all superb. I think the only thing you can (objectively) fault here is the length (I'm saying this for other people, I personally loved that it just kept on giving at times I thought it was over haha).

If you're like me, who only took notice

If you're like me, who only took notice of this game after garnering a super high score, please do your research first. This is a visual novel. People can argue whether this is a game or not, but I personally do think it is. I like VNs. It's sad that some of the user reviewers here only gave one to bring down its score (e.g. some people complaining that it's JUST a VN so it doesn't deserve a super high score.. come on, can't you give anything substantial to warrant a true negative review?). I, too, had great expectations of this game due to its score, but I wasn't disappointed at all. Also, don't drop it until you've reached the fourth door. It gets better, I promise.

My actual rating is 9.5 I really loved the whole experience but I just can't not dock points for this one story aspect (I don't want to elaborate further because it's a spoiler). It's a personal thing though, so I'm not surprised that a lot of other users rated it 10.

Definitely recommended for lovers of VNs, and even those who don't but can keep an open mind. It's worth it, I promise.

Definitely can't recommend to the "classic" (for a lack of a better term) gamers. Please, research first before giving in to the hype.

And don't hate if you haven't actually played it.

an almost perfect visual novel experience. it touched me deeply, shook me to my core and left me feeling seen and sad. a melancholy affair, i felt joy, despair, anger, hatred, delight and catharsis going through it. it handles the vast majority of its heavy, heavy subject matters with grace and respect that most media barely puts in the time for. the music is incredible, the characters arean almost perfect visual novel experience. it touched me deeply, shook me to my core and left me feeling seen and sad. a melancholy affair, i felt joy, despair, anger, hatred, delight and catharsis going through it. it handles the vast majority of its heavy, heavy subject matters with grace and respect that most media barely puts in the time for. the music is incredible, the characters are incredible, the story is intense, violent and as dark as pitch. it’s also a wonderfully hopeful story about redemption and forgiveness. what a journey. PLEASE do look at the trigger warnings going into it. it is a dark game. Expand

    Overall, a very solid VN.

Positives: Music is exquisite. The central conceit of the game is extremely engaging. Neutral: The prose is excellent; however, the dialogue is poorly paced an in need of editing. The visuals are interesting; however, the backgrounds and sprites are not cohesive. Negatives: With one major exception, the characters are bland. I had trouble feeling

With one major exception, the characters are bland. I had trouble feeling connected to them.
Just do yourself a favor and read a wiki of Chapter 3 and skip the entire chapter. It is so preposterously boring that I do not know how it made the final cut of the VN.

The House in Fata Morgana is over 40 hours long, and in those 40 hours, you'll maybe get to make about three decisions. It is a visual novel in the strictest sense of the word, and you must be prepared for that going in. But with a fantastic, original, slow-burn story about love, loss, hurt, forgiveness, and recovery, it's one of the best visual novels out there — and your patience will be paid off in the end.

I think fans of gothic literature, visual novels and/ or engrossing stories will find something to love about this game. Just know that if you start it, you've got to reach the end to really appreciate what it has to offer. [Issue #55 – October 2021, p. 28]

The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition is a long and finely constructed visual novel. It promises an intricate plot of suspense, intrigue and revenge for anyone willing to commit forty or more hours to the story.
