The Falconeer: Warrior Edition is a marvelous work based on aerial combat that brings a fantastic mix of beautiful visual qualities, a very demanding combat system, and a game experience that works like a charm whether on a television screen or on the go. This version is so well made it comes technically near to its counterpart on more advanced systems. The Falconeer: Warrior Edition is truly a gem that fully deserves its place next to every Nintendo Switch owner.

This is a rare instance of a game that feels perfect on the go but also looks great on a big screen TV. Yes, the core gameplay loop is fairly simple, but The Falconeer never really pretends to be anything other than what it is and it excels wildly at it. If you’re a fan of aerial combat games and want to try something outside the usual realm of fighter jets and spaceships, I can strongly recommend trying out The Falconeer. While it may get repetitive for some, the core combat loop and lore filled world drew me in and I’ll likely be returning for more very soon.

Overall, The Falconeer: Warrior Edition is a great experience. Hopefully future titles can take a lesson from this game in terms of how players can explore their open world, and what they can find. But all of that is the cherry on top of an engaging story, breathtaking visuals, and the pure joy that comes from riding on the back of a giant warbird.

Overall Falconeer has plenty to offer the player whilst lacking in mission variety the overall beauty of the world should be enough to offer the player plenty of incentive to carry on. The story is engaging without over staying its welcome and adds lore that can easily be expanded in a further game and like I said above this game is prime for a sequel.

The Falconeer: Warrior Edition is an impressive technical achievement coming from the mind of just one individual in Tomas Sala. It looks great and feels fully-fledged. Take that out of the equation, though, and things are a bit too unvaried and repetitive for our liking.

This game might be fun but I spent half an hour trying to land the bird, on the second mission.
    I give up.
It might be blindingly obvious to everyone else since searching online reveals nothing.
It's sad the game is completely ruined for me because of how ridiculously hard this one thing is.
It's really too bad since it seems like a decent game.

Many titles have taken the approach of stripping down story to focus on combat, or some have been pretty in some way but relatively shallow overall, leaving genre fans without an abundance of choices. While its setting is more on the fantastical side, with you commanding a fighting falcon as your steed, rather than set in space or in some sort of aircraft, The Falconeer makes a serious attempt at providing both engaging combat and an overarching story to add intrigue. While it doesn’t venture into the grand territory of the likes of a Wing Commander title (though, sadly, nothing really ever has) this is a well-made game with satisfying and somewhat unique combat, a sense of flight that feels pretty good (though I’m thankful for the ability to warp ahead rather than glide along for a few minutes between objectives), and a story that may have some familiar beats but provides some color to the action and some incentive to see things through to the end. It isn’t perfect, but if you’re starved for this sort of experience it’s among the short list of better options available on the eShop.

First of all: It closes a gap in between fantasy and aerial combat that I´ve craved since childhood and am very sure I was not alone with. Also, the game experience feels great when it comes to atmosphere, visuals and soundtrack. Every (!) dialogue and menu item has a high-quality, charismatic speech-output that gives a lot of depth to the story and experience. The controls feel neat and great as long as you´re in the menu. Given that this whole game is a one-man-show by Tomas Sala, I am pretty impressed by the implementation.

BUT. As soon as I´m leaving the menu for a mission, I do not get along well with the flying controls. I will say that I´ve played several other aerial combat games before where I did. These feel a bit stiff and unnatural to me. Also, the bird is flying pretty slow unless your using your (very limited) dash bar or using height differences or wind tunnels to gain speed. But let me tell you, height wants to be gained first and wind tunnels are rather rare. So what I´m missing is that craved kind of flying zest, which was the only reason for me to buy this game, because the game only consists of either being in a simple menu or out there flying. There is no possibility to unmount the warbird for some ground exploration etc. that could give extra depth to the flying experience itself.

Also I want to add that as admirable as Tomas Sala´s work is, I am not buying art here, I am buying a game and I want to get a certain feeling out of it. Here I was going for speed frenzy and flying thrill, fighting wind and weather for the missions, feeling the strengh and weakness of a single war bird lost over an endless ocean. If one person is not capable to fully translate that feeling technically, he might should have gotten some support on that, because 30€ is a quite a bit for what this game is actually offering.

So long story very short: I don´t feel it with the Falconeer, I really wish I did.
