Plaza is a game of tight little systems all working together, to create a joyous mini-game collection that brims with good vibes. For those who played the Corner Shop games, it’s a nostalgic return to a simpler time. For anyone who hasn’t, it’s an ultra-cosy experience with enough cuteness and novelty to be entirely endearing.

Tamagotchi Plaza has refreshing minigames, some of which we haven't seen before. Unfortunately, the motivation to play quickly fades, and a touch control option would have been beneficial for some games.

Tamagotchi Plaza is part of the Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop saga. In this new adventure, the focus is on twelve different types of businesses, where you can perform activities to help them grow and turn your city into a true hub of interest. It's a perfect title for those five minutes during your lunch break.

It's a bit of a shame that Tamagotchi Plaza didn't take a few crucial extra steps, which I don't think would have been too much to ask. But the basic framework alone is satisfying enough to have fun with.

Is Tamagotchi Plaza a pleasant game? Sure. But can I be certain who is it for? Nope. It contradicts itself at every step, and isn’t suitable neither for kids nor adults. I’m a tamagotchi fan, and I was confused more often than not.

It’s not entirely clear who Tamagotchi Plaza is aimed at. For younger players, the colorful creatures provide a reasonable and varied challenge, especially in short play sessions. However, the inspiration from Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop (which was never a masterpiece to begin with) is now just a faint memory. Due to its repetitive gameplay, lack of real incentives to continue, and a stylistically justified yet technically lazy presentation, Tamagotchi Plaza ends up as a forgettable title—engaging only in its first few minutes. That said, it connects to the latest physical Tamagotchi model, so dedicated fans might still want to give it a try.

A substantial lack of instructions and in game help, coupled with a poor story, makes Tamagotchi Plaza's value for money and enjoyment level on the low side. It has the potential to be quite innovative if it expands on the game's premise and uses all of the Nintendo Switch’s technology capabilities. Overall, Tamagotchi Plaza fails on a basic level that casts a large shadow on any future instalments. It is extremely different to the original egg-shaped Tamagotchi, and needs more substance to be worth more than a cursory glance considering the physical and digital price tag.

Tamagotchi Plaza is a flat experience in a bright, colourful package. The minigames are fun for an hour or so, but take too long to add new mechanics, leaving the gameplay repetitive and unsatisfying. It’s fun to see so many Tamagotchi characters walking around this world, but it would have been far more interesting if there was anything substantial for them to actually do.
