Nintendo Force MagazineFeb 26, 2019This is the ultimate Smash Bros. How will they ever top it? [Issue #37 – January/February 2019, p. 65]
-
Jan 25, 2019This truly is the ultimate fighting game, megalomaniac in scope. A huge story campaign together with cooperative and competitive multiplayer combine to form an unbelievable experience that will delight even those unfamiliar with the fighting game genre.
-
Dec 25, 2018This is what a multidimensional megahit video game should look like.
-
Dec 20, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the game where everything gets bigger and better. With the addition of the biggest roster of fighters to ever appear in a Super Smash Bros. game, a huge variety of fighting stages and an abundance of playable modes that cater to every gaming taste and style, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one of the best games to grace a Nintendo console so far.
-
Dec 20, 2018The bottom line is this is a fully-featured, portable Super Smash Bros. game that looks fantastic, has a ridiculous amount of content and plays exactly like you want it to. This is the perfect place for newcomers to jump into the series and a fantastic title that veterans will absolutely devour.
-
Dec 13, 2018Perfecting the mechanics the franchise established way back in 1999, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a crazy, chaotic joy. With a gargantuan roster of fighters, an amazing adventure mode and more unlockables than would ever have seemed possible, this is a game that packs one heck of a punch.
-
Dec 12, 2018In an age where instant gratification is an essential feature in nearly all art, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate might seem almost miserly in its slow drip and patient reveals of its staggering depth. After more than 20 hours with the game, I’d still only unlocked two-thirds of the main cast and explored half of the World of Light’s map. Rather than feel irritated or cheated by its patience, I instead found Ultimate a luxurious experience, every bit as meditative in practice as its fights were bombastic. This is a game to be enjoyed over time, to be savored with a refreshed palate after you’ve spent some time away.
-
Dec 12, 2018It’s an absolute joy to play and to experience, stuffed full of content, and – woeful online notwithstanding – comes highly recommended.
-
Dec 11, 2018I’ve been playing for hours and still don’t have all the characters, and I still feel like there are menu options I haven’t even touched yet. But at the same time, I feel like I’m deeply satisfied, as what I have chosen to do has scratched gaming itches for me I didn’t even know a Super Smash Bros. game was capable of. This is a massive game in both scale and cultural weight, one that wears its far-reaching subtitles as badges of pride.
-
Dec 8, 2018Super Smash Bros Ultimate is a celebration of Nintendo’s long history, of the video game medium, and of the people who have poured their own spirits into crafting these characters, worlds and experiences we are all fortunate enough to have enjoyed over the years. It's a meticulously-crafted joy to play that I will surely be returning to for years to come.
-
Dec 7, 2018Ultimate is one of the best and most complete fighting games ever made, and an incredible homage to video games. This is a fantastic game where every player can find their way to enjoy it. It is an absolute must-have if you own a Switch, and a reason to buy it if you don’t.
-
Dec 7, 2018So how does it all stack up? Vocal concerns about past games have been actively addressed, every single fighter from the series is present (even Pichu), the customisability is overwhelmingly vast and it’s all topped off with super-solid single-player modes to boot. We’re not sure how you could make a more robust or pleasing Smash game. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate truly is the ultimate instalment in the series, and it makes you wonder where Sakurai can possibly take this franchise next.
-
Dec 6, 2018Don't ask me how Nintendo managed to put more than 35 years of experience and love into one product, but they succeeded. Smash Ultimate is not only the ultimate Smash game, the ultimate fighting game, the ultimate party game, and the ultimate collection of videogame nostalgia: it's the ultimate video game. I will continue to play this forever. At least, until Nintendo delivers another sequel.
-
Dec 6, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate delivers the fight of a lifetime and an unfaltering experience that is ‘ultimate’ in every way imaginable. It really is something quite special, a celebration that’s rich in gaming history and, polished to perfection, the next must-have game on Nintendo Switch that you won’t want to miss.
-
Dec 6, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate manages to meet every single expectation that was placed upon it. The addition of the marvelous adventure mode, the immense amount of playable characters as well as spirits and to top all of that, magnificent visuals, audio and gameplay. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is not only one of the best games to be found on Nintendo Switch, but it is also one of the greatest games ever made.
-
Dec 6, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is ultimate in every sense of the word. World of Light is fantastic, Challenge Mode is satisfying and there's so much love and detail in absolutely everything in the game... Whilst having 60+ characters and 100+ stages sounds overwhelming, it's the perfect celebration of everything Nintendo and will be hard to top going forward.
-
Dec 6, 2018Smash Bros. has often felt a bit like it was trying to do too much and while it has always been a fun series, the disparity between the fighting game and the party game didn't always mesh well. Ultimate is the perfect fusion of the two styles. There are countless additions to it as a fighting game to keep the competitive players happy, but the new items and features make the party game the most exciting it could be. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate feels like one of the best written love letters to gaming that there has ever been, the care and attention given to each of the games represented is incredible. This is quite simply a must-play game, one that will keep you going for hundreds of hours with its single player alone, and with multiplayer that will keep you going for thousands.
-
Dec 6, 2018Every aspect of the game feels fine-tuned and thought out, and the sheer amount of changes and diversity of content is simply staggering. This is the most ambitious and all-inclusive Super Smash Bros entry, and one of the very best games Nintendo's little system has gotten yet.
-
Dec 6, 2018Gigantic, monumental, colossal. Fresh and easy for newcomers, deep and challenging for seasoned players. After Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it's really hard to imagine how this series is going to improve in the next entries.
-
Dec 6, 2018There are no two ways about it: this is one of the most impressive games on the Nintendo Switch, and represents some of the best value for money we’ve seen in video games in years, whether you’re into single player or multiplayer. Buy this game, you will not regret it.
-
Dec 6, 2018By combining familiar gameplay with some new ideas, there's something in here for everyone. Smash Bros. is back and has never been better.
-
Dec 18, 2018Quite easily the best Smash game of all time. It’s got it all, and the Switch only helps compliment what makes Smash Bros. so damn fun. It’s the perfect console for the fighter, and is one of the best value for money propositions I’ve ever had the pleasure of taking on. It’s been an arduous wait, but it’s been well worth it — Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is absolutely brilliant.
-
Dec 14, 2018Sakurai did what seemed impossible and created the Super Smash Bros. game that all fans wanted. It has hours of content for single player, a great multiplayer experience and a fast-paced combat that competitive players will love. Sadly, its online is far from perfect.
-
Dec 6, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the perfect incarnation of a 20-year long work. It's the maximum point of the series and of the genre, with its thousand contents and a great single player campaign mode. It's both competitive and fun. It's only a little smash from perfect.
-
Dec 6, 2018This is the ultimate Super Smash Bros. With an abundance of fighters, stages and modes there is always fun in fighting friends. Even when you're playing by yourself thanks to Classic Mode and World of Light if you play the second one in bite-sized chunks.
-
CD-ActionMar 25, 2019It’s not just a great fighting game and a perfect party title, uncommonly enjoyable and absurdly rich in content that should suffice for literally years of fun. It’s also an amazing homage to the history of video games. [02/2019, p.60]
-
Mar 5, 2019Super Smash Bros. Ultimate escalates everything the series was known for, and delivers it flawlessly. Biggest fighter rooster ever, more dynamic gameplay, loads and loads of gameplay modes, stages, weapons, music, stuff! If there is a smash that deserves your cash, this is the one!
-
Jan 4, 2019After the short reign of Super Mario Party, Super Smash Bros Ultimate has now become the de-facto game of choice to play at the office as well as the home. It encapsulates the timeless elements of the long running series and sprinkles a wealth of content unmatched by its contemporary rivals. Simply put, it’s couch gaming bliss.
-
Jan 2, 2019Super Smash is yet another masterpiece by Nintendo that defines the gaming industry, and this time thanks to the Switch console, you can enjoy it everywhere. I would definitely recommend Super Smash to any fan of digital entertainment.
-
Dec 17, 2018When I look back at this game, I know it won't win any GOTY awards but in my eyes, it's the most fun I've had in video gaming this year. The characters are great, the single-player campaign is great and the music and stages selection is amazing. A must have for Switch owners.
-
Dec 17, 2018The sum of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s parts is nothing short of excellent. From single-player to local multiplayer, there are very few flaws with the experience. Whether you’re hoarding spirits in World of Light, spiking your friends in a versus match of Smashdown, or running through Classic mode with your favorite fighter, there is no shortage of smart, creative action to be had. That said, in a game so well assembled, its lackluster online portion stands out even more starkly. However, when taking Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a whole, that one blight does little to diminish the overall mastery on display. This is not a game Nintendo Switch owners should be caught without.
-
Dec 14, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lives up to the name because it's the best Smash game to date. The absurd character roster, immense amount of content, and general amazing gameplay make it fun in a way that's tough to beat. There are minor quibbles here and there, and the poor online component is a genuine black mark on the rest of the game. Still, Ultimate is a joy to play and a must-buy for anyone who has ever enjoyed smashing some bros. Even considering the Switch's amazing lineup, Smash Ultimate is one of the best the system has to offer.
-
Dec 13, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one of the best and most complete fighting games ever made. It's a highly recommended game.
-
Dec 12, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the perfect fighting game for everyone. Its features are easy to learn but difficult to master, and it's extreme fun whether playing with friends or alone. This game is so attractive that sometimes I even can't stop to have dinner in recent days. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate definitely demands that every gamer pay attention to it.
-
Dec 10, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate it easily the best entry in the entire series, one of the most ambitious crossovers in videogame (and entertainment) history and one of the greatest games on Switch right now. It doesn't matter if you want it to play alone or with friends, it offers a ton of content to keep you glued to it for hundreds of hours. Easily, one of the best games of the year.
-
Dec 10, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a great party game that has a beating heart of a really complex fighter within it. It’s faster, prettier, and jam-packed with content. While the single-player World of Light mode disappointed, every other aspect of the game is showered with tender love and care. Not only is it the best Smash Bros. game of all time, but it makes me ponder on how Nintendo will top this in future iterations. I suspect that this is a game most Switch owners will be keeping on their micro SD card for years to come.
-
Dec 9, 2018With deeper single-player content, an improved online offering and a massive roster of characters and stages, comprising all of those from the previous games and then some, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the complete package. I’m not sure how Nintendo could surpass this, and it probably doesn’t need to, as alongside Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is unrivalled on the local multiplayer stage.
-
Dec 7, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate isn’t dramatically reinventing the franchise, but that’s all right with me; it’s a refinement of what’s come before. Some of my favorite gaming moments have centered on Smash, and it’s great to have a solid new anchor for moments yet to come – even if it means getting knocked into oblivion by a snoozing Jigglypuff every once in a while.
-
Dec 6, 2018More than any previous game in the series, Ultimate seems to have taken into account the needs and desires of all players, and made it possible. Ancillary content like Spirits may not quite live up to pure fun of the main Smash mode, but then few things in video games do. And that main mode is the biggest achievement here. It's bigger and better than it ever has been before, and somehow incorporates just about everything that's come previously.
-
Dec 6, 2018Nintendo Switch has made its year historic with this video game. Ultimate is not a Super Smash Bros Deluxe, it is the work of 20 years of success and a new way of revolutionary understanding all the new ideas, such as the Spirits or the new and long single-player Adventure mode. Sakurai hits the fighting games. SSB Ultimate is essential.
-
Dec 6, 2018Thanks to a huge content (including characters, stages, OST tracks, spirits and game modes) Smash Bros. Ultimate is the best opus of the franchise. Sadly it suffers from a weak online multiplayer mode that isn’t fixed yet, full of lags and freezes.
-
Dec 6, 2018Super Smash Bros Ultimate is one of the most complete fighting games thanks to plenty of game modes and content. In addition, it pays tribute to video games without equal, which makes it transcend and shine. An essential game for Nintendo Switch owners or lovers of video games in general.
-
Dec 6, 2018Despite that a lot of the old content isn't as hard-hitting seeing it the second, third, fourth or even fifth time around, the fact that it's all here, and in a manageable file size, is more than enough.
-
Dec 6, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate takes its name literally, as everything that fans have loved from the series is present and accounted for this time around. It's the party brawler that lets friends go head-to-head with their favorite game characters, now on Nintendo's impressive hybrid console. Spirits, featured in the World of Light story mode, introduce an exciting role-playing element for a new level of strategy and creativity. Thankfully, this and other new additions only add to the winning Smash Bros. formula, never taking away from what works.
-
Dec 6, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the ultimate Smash Bros. The huge amount of characters offers a great combination of cool newcomers and fun retro characters.
-
Dec 10, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is definitely the Ultimate rendition of a beloved series. It's still the most accessible and interesting fighting game out there, and it's now better than ever. A little familiar in places, but this is the best Smash has ever been. Another essential Nintendo Switch game.
-
Dec 6, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lives up to its name, offering the most comprehensive game in the series to date. It has an absurd amount to play, fight, and unlock – though that can be to its detriment at times. While the World of Light adventure mode isn’t reason alone to get Smash Bros., it’s still a consistently amusing and shockingly large campaign, and a worthy compliment to Ultimate’s incredible multiplayer core.
-
Dec 6, 2018It's an amazing fighting game, an amazing party game, and the only title to be both of them. Even the single player Adventure is long, creative and difficult.
-
Game World Navigator MagazineFeb 8, 2019Beneath the fantastic eyecandy lies a very precise mechanic that rewards tactical thinking, good positioning and ability to make split-second decisions. [Issue#235, p.40]
-
Dec 6, 2018For the first time, we could almost say that the Nintendo brawler has reached the saturation point, beyond which it is really difficult to think about what future episodes might hold.
-
Dec 6, 2018The limit of this game model has reached the top, turning slightly towards the RPG, providing options for everyone to play, and although it does not offer an adventure mode with a complex story, it does allow us to enter its universe.
-
Dec 6, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one of the best games of the year, a digital paradise for the fans of the franchise.
-
Dec 6, 2018The fact that the actual gameplay still remains so accessible, balanced and still deep, is a special feat. For skeptics, the Smash series has a reputation as a chaotic party game. However, Ultimate underlines once again that complexity and straightforward fun need not be mutually exclusive.
-
Dec 17, 2018While it easily could have collapsed under the weight of too much content and a lack of direction, Ultimate is instead very cohesive and doesn’t treat a single bit of itself like excess. The only real question at this point is how Nintendo will ever be able to top this iteration of Smash Bros., but that’s a dilemma for another day— until then, Ultimate is, hands-down, a top-three experience on Switch that everyone needs to experience.
-
Feb 5, 2019Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is like The Avengers from the world of fighting games.
-
Jan 17, 2019Can there be such a thing as too much content? According to Super Smash Bros Ultimate the answer is clearly no. With tons of characters, arenas, settings and game modes, this is by far the most complete Super Smash game yet. It is just as good as a single player experience, as it is with friends - at least if you do not want to play online. The Gamecube classic Super Smash Bros Melee has finally been defeated.
-
Dec 20, 2018There has never been a better game to play with friends on the Switch. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate might just be among the best games to play with friends, period.
-
Dec 18, 2018It’s the best single-player Smash to date, and still retains the fantastic couch co-op the series is known for, but only time will tell if online functionality catches up to the rest of the game.
-
Dec 18, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a fantastic game and one of the best entries in the series, and the only serious issue holding it back is the online performance. The various modes and features will satisfy those seeking a significant single player component and those desiring countless hours of local multiplayer mayhem. Ultimate celebrates the rich history of Nintendo and several other beloved franchises, and it’s the perfect game to end the year on. This is an excellent fighting game that people will clearly be playing for many years to come.
-
Dec 17, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate offers near-endless replayability.
-
Dec 17, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate beautifully tows the line of accessibility for casual players and depth for the hardcore fans.
-
Dec 17, 2018An inconsistent online mode and situational downers don't stop Super Smash Bros. Ultimate from shining as a flexible multiplayer game that can be as freewheeling or as firm as you want it to be. Its entertaining single-player content helps keep the game rich with interesting things to do, as well as bolstering its spirit of loving homage to the games that have graced Nintendo consoles. Ultimate's diverse content is compelling, its strong mechanics are refined, and the encompassing collection is simply superb.
-
Dec 17, 2018There hasn't been a fighting game to reach this level of perfection. Smash is extremely fun whether you're a professional or just hanging out with friends looking for absolute chaos.
-
Dec 16, 2018It takes more than a little bit of programming genius to allow a game as simple and accessible as this to still keep the door open for in-depth competitive play.
-
Dec 14, 2018Having the ability to play Smash Bros. in any setting — and have it look as good as it does — is a marvel.
-
Dec 14, 2018The definitive Super Smash Bros. game, Ultimate is not only a pure and unadulterated joy, but also a fantastic fighting game stuffed to the gills with characters and other content. A little smasher.
-
Dec 13, 2018Despite striking setbacks with online, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is arguably the most addictive game on Nintendo Switch. Like its predecessors, its combat system is unrivaled with precise inputs that give you full control of your favorite characters. With an extensive roster of playable fighters and an impressive lineup of stages, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate can easily provide you with a varied sense of enjoyment for many years to come.
-
Dec 12, 2018There’s no denying the palpable triumph of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. An ambitious, far-reaching project, it feels like years and years of dreams come true. A game with this number of characters, songs, stages, bosses, and callbacks simply feels like it shouldn’t exist. It’s hard to imagine a better Super Smash Bros. game, but with more content already on the way, Ultimate will continue to top itself for the foreseeable future. For now, it’s impossible not to love what has been so carefully crafted as Nintendo’s finest multiplayer game ever.
-
Dec 11, 2018The World of Light campaign is the absolute icing on the cake, offering up tens of hours of fun and some genuine surprises. The only thing really holding Ultimate back from perfection is its online play, both because of its connectivity hiccups and because of some odd design choices.
-
Dec 11, 2018The online features drag the experience down a bit. If you’re someone hoping for a good online multiplayer experience with Ultimate, you’ll be disappointed. But if you’re looking for a fun fighting games to play with friends on a couch, nothing serves you better than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
-
Dec 11, 2018As long as you can make sense of the onslaught of characters, modes, and options, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a masterpiece.
-
Dec 11, 2018It’s not an exaggeration to say that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the biggest accomplishment in the series thus far. It leaves a lasting impact and is hard to put down for even a second when the smashing seems to beckon fighters back. Smashing opponents has never felt so fun, fluid and easy to pick up. While there’s places we can hope to see improvement, such as online, it’s still the best smash title in the series for party players and competitive alike. Ultimate is likely to stay around for a long time to come, as it’s hard to imagine any other Nintendo fighting title topping it for in a good number of years.
-
Dec 11, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a game so comprehensive and engaging that it’s difficult to see where Nintendo and Sakurai can take the series next. The sheer number of options and modes you have to choose from can keep you and your friends busy for hours or days at a time, and even those uninterested in fighting games will be impressed by the reverence and love that its developers showed to every included franchise. You can’t own a Switch without owning Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and for some, it might even be the only game you need on the system.
-
Dec 11, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is more than best-of-hits collection of Smash games past. It’s a tightly woven experience that deftly combines the old with the new and manages to meet the lofty expectations placed on it. It’s incredibly easy to pick up and play, with enough depth and nuance to keep players engaged. It’s the best Smash Bros has ever been.
-
Dec 11, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate arrives at its proposed abyss, full-throated. Imagine a massive pile of candy hemorrhaging pieces off the side of a table as you haphazardly arch your arms around it and attempt to pull in every little bit at once. Though the matchmaking needs work, the better part of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is an uncontainable fighting game masterpiece.
-
Dec 10, 2018I'll be really disappointed if Nintendo really is shifting emphasis to turn Smash Bros. into a more "serious" fighting game. It says a lot about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that the biggest criticism that I have with it is that the intent of this game seems at odds compared with the intent of Smash Bros. entries in the past. This won't work nearly as well as a party game as some in the Smash Bros. series have in the past, but nonetheless this is a genuinely impressive fighting game with a nearly overwhelming amount of content that's going to make the more serious Smash Bros. fans very, very happy.
-
Dec 10, 2018Ultimate has the best gameplay in Smash Bros. series, mixing some of the best mechanics from SSB4 and Melee. Also it's simply overwhelming in terms of content. By contrast, it has issues in its online structure and netcode, which was far from expected.
-
Dec 9, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is bigger and, for the most part, better than ever. It gives to the audience one of the best experiences ever for single player in a fighting game, but makes a few bad choices for the Online Mode that steals the freedom of choice from the players.
-
Dec 8, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate feels like a mic drop for the series. It packs in almost every conceivable character and stage, plus a sizable single-player mode. Spirits don't quite land, but the battles feel better than ever. It feels like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be a Switch party staple for a long time to come.
-
Dec 7, 2018Smash Bros. Ultimate is a fantastic game no matter what type of Smash player you are. Casual, hardcore, or complete newcomer, this is one Switch title you don’t want to pass up.
-
Dec 6, 2018With Super Smash. Bros Ultimate, the development team set themselves the lofty goal of bringing together an incredible amount of the franchises back catalogue of characters, stages and other miscellanea. With this much fan service-focused content, there was always the danger that the game would get buried beneath it. But thankfully, the game sits proudly on top of it, in this game that simultaneously celebrates the very history of gaming while presenting a deep, incredibly fun fighting game for everyone and everyone, no matter how you choose to play.
-
Dec 6, 2018Yet there’s no denying that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the series at the height of its powers. This is a portable, high-speed party brawler with a massive roster and a host of game modes. Whether you’re into couch co-op or online play, this game comes in hot and heavy. Maybe you, like me, have skipped the last couple entries. Maybe you’re equally unsure about this one. Take it from me: you don’t want to sleep on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo has knocked it out of the park with this one.
-
Dec 6, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate takes characters we’ve played for decades and remasters them into a robust, fantastically enjoyable package.
-
Dec 6, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is without a doubt the finest title in the series so far. Not only it builds up on nearly everything the Smash Bros. world has done over nearly twenty years, it delivers it in bigger, better and more accessible ways, making this an absolutely indispensable game on any Nintendo Switch collection.
-
Dec 6, 2018The newest entry in the Smash Bros series truly earns the title of Ultimate.
-
Edge MagazineDec 6, 2018It's harder than ever to resist embracing the chaos, because with so many ingredients its bound to surprise you more often than not. As its title suggests, this is a sequel that pulls out all the stops, as you sense that Sakurai is going all-out to indulge his inner nerd for maybe the final time. It's a rapturous celebration, not just of Nintendo, but videogames as a whole. Now for pity's sake, let the poor man have a rest. [Jan 2019, p.102]
-
Dec 6, 2018Always more generous, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate offers many ways to have fun alone or with others, and a game concept that will satisfy both newcommers and specialists. If we can regret the absence of a true story for the adventure mode, this remains only a small detail compared to the amazing quality and content of the whole thing. Colossal!
-
Dec 6, 2018If you own a Switch, you must own Super Smash Bros Ultimate too. There is so much content to enjoy in one amazing package. You can play this game how, when and whenever you want and that is truly ultimate.
-
Dec 6, 2018Easily the best Smash Bros. ever made, with a fantastic new story campaign and a near infinite range of characters and options for multiplayer.
-
Dec 14, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is an impressive package to say the least. Although it doesn't quite elevate the already established core gameplay to the next level, what's here is still a frantic and fun fighter that anyone can easily enjoy.
-
Dec 12, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one of the best games for Nintendo Switch. The game has 74 characters to unlock, great dynamic arenas and lots of fun. If you are a Nintendo Switch user, this game is a must.
-
Dec 27, 2018The best multiplayer game on Switch, and the richest, strongest entry in the Smash series, at least in terms of sheer content. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate should prove to be a near endlessly entertaining go-to for friends who want a fun, enduring party game.
-
Dec 14, 2018If you play locally or solo this is one of the best and content richest Switch games out there. Just don’t expect to get too much fun out of the laggy online modes - yet.
-
Dec 29, 2018There always seems to be areas that Nintendo doesn't quite expand on - and with the removal of descriptive Trophies whilst using copy-pasted official art for Spirits, and the absolutely pitiful online mode setup and features contained within, it's difficult to say that this really is the ultimate Smash game. Regardless, it is a fantastic celebration of not just Nintendo, but video games in general, and it will provide months, if not years, of both solo and multiplayer mayhem.
-
Dec 14, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate does well to live up to its name, at least where offline content is concerned. It's with the backward, early-2000's era online experience that I take issue. The inability to easily match up with friends, or even those with similar rule preferences, severely hinders an otherwise fantastic fighting game.
-
Dec 12, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the most refined Smash yet. There’s a ridiculous amount of content here and, if you’re a Smash Bros. fan you should absolutely buy this. Unfortunately, the game loses something when it’s about anything more than its core local multiplayer experience.
-
Dec 6, 2018For dedicated fans, though, such a challenge will doubtless prove appealing. Super Smash Bros Ultimate, for all its accessibility and riotous multiplayer fun, may be one of the few mainstream Nintendo games that isn’t necessarily for everyone. But that’s okay. Because in pursuing its more technical elements and providing its most substantial solo adventure yet, it's hard to see Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as anything other than a series’ best.
-
Dec 6, 2018In spite of a good solo mode, rich content and a decent technical side, Super Smash Bros seems more like a Deluxe version than a Swicth-specific production. Unless you're a fan of the IP, this game is far from a must-have.
-
Dec 10, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is equal parts greatness and lacking. The sheer wealth of content and great gameplay is commended but there are big holes in what could be a great game.

Dec 6, 2018Smash Ultimate earns its name not by piling on the content, but by understanding what an adjective like "ultimate" means in the context of a fighting game. Gamers want an essential, badass combat experience no matter which characters square off. Even this early, it's settled: Smash Ultimate nails this expectation. Thus, it is the best fighting-game package to ever land on a Nintendo console.

Dec 6, 2018Quick look.

Dec 6, 2018It’s difficult to imagine the type of gamer for whom Smash Ultimate has no appeal. This is a big game, and with the fat skimmed off, a remarkable one. Its core attraction—fighting on a platform—is as polished and brilliant and sharp as ever, its fighters the most unique and deep.

Dec 6, 2018From what I've played over a couple dozen hours, the game seems airtight. No bugs. No annoyances. No character that seems wildly overpowered. Of course, I'm not a professional Smash player so I can't look at it from that critical lens, but it feels good to me...In my experience as a casual-yet-passionate player, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is exceptional in every way.

Dec 6, 2018Because I can fine-tune the options I want, and pick the characters and stages I love from the franchise’s whole history, I’m almost guaranteed to be able to craft a fun match with whomever I’m playing with. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s gameplay is so snappy and fluid, its characters so rewarding in their variety, that it feels destined to dominate living rooms once again.

Dec 9, 2018It’s all good, friends! Except when it hates you.

Dec 6, 2018Super Smash Bros. Ultimate won’t change your mind about the series. If Nintendo’s particular brand of chaotic fighting doesn’t appeal to you, Ultimate doesn’t offer much new, unless you happen to be a die-hard Ridley fan. Instead, it takes what people already love about it, and offers more. More characters to explore, more ways to play, and even more story to dig into. It’s a greatest hits collection, one that makes me wonder just what director Masahiro Sakurai could possibly do to top this for the inevitable next Smash game.

Feb 25, 2019The Super Smash Bros. series has long since established itself as a fighting game on par with icons like Street Fighter and Tekken. Ken and Ryu are even playable characters! Super Smash Bros. Ultimate cements that legacy, offering players more choices, customization, portability, and extras than most will ever choose to experience.

Dec 6, 2018With an everything but the kitchen sink approach, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lives up to its name - it's the best gaming cross-over experience ever.
-
Dec 7, 2018It's impossible to know if Smash Ultimate could ever serve everyone. But with this strategic mix of nostalgia and experimentation, it was able to do something I didn't expect: Bring me home.
