Super Mega Baseball 4 has a bit more competition on the Nintendo Switch than it used to with the likes of MLB The Show 22 and MLB The Show 23 but it’s still the king of arcade style baseball games. Since MLB has moved beyond the R.B.I. Baseball series, there’s really not much else in this genre. If you’re looking for a fast, fun, easy to pick up and play baseball game, Super Mega Baseball 4 is gonna be right up your alley!

Super Mega Baseball 4, like its predecessors, has become the new standard for arcade sports games upon its release. Metalhead Software has refined near perfection over the past few years and I’m in love with the lineup of MLB Legends and the new addition of Shuffle Draft.

Super Mega Baseball 4 begs to be played in couch multiplayer with a few cold ones over the summer, but the franchise play will keep you going way beyond that. A home run.

Despite some disappointing option and feature exclusions, Super Mega Baseball 4 is a strong alternative to the annualized sim-facing MLB game from Sony. Fans of retro-style arcade baseball games will find a lot to love, and roster customization enthusiasts have their new gold standard.

While suffering some Switch performance issues, Super Mega Baseball 4 is another solid entry in the sports series. The variety of ways to play and the depth of customization options add hours of engagement to this game, though it might be nice to get some training options for those of us who need a hand with our fastball.

Overall Super Mega Baseball 4 is immensely disappointing and an unworthy successor to its predecessor. SMB 3 was a genuinely fun and clean playing arcade baseball game, and never needed to be more than that. Now, though, it seems like the series is being positioned as a viable alternative to the MLB license. The new game modes, efforts to bring real-world names into the fold, and aesthetic shifts all seem to be designed to pivot Super Mega Baseball to become something to take more seriously and commit more time to. You know, like MLB The Show. Unfortunately, these new additions are directly at odds with arcade good times and now, thanks to the influence of EA in all likelihood, we’ve been dumped with a series experiencing an identity crisis.

Edit : Updated after playing over 3 franchise seasons.

SMB2 PC, SMB3 PC and Switch player, with probably 1000 hours between them. I had 20+ seasons in my franchise on SMB3 Switch.

SMB4 on the switch plays fine, I am having minimal errors, and only 1 crash on 6 games. Started a new franchise with my beloved Crocs, who have been kicked out of the Motor Yard. The new "Wheel" ballpark is nice, and has attention to detail that rivals any SMB3 park.

I originally said that the graphics were a small step forward while I was only playing handheld. To see just how much better the visuals are, put it on a big screen. Now the graphics updates, and their new animations, can be appreciated. I am having an issue playing some parks at some times of day, I believe its a lighting issue that is too complicated for the switch to handle.

Gameplay is near identical, and it was a nice surprise to play at the same ego level without having to change like we did from 2 to 3. Learning and understanding the tactics of new perks and penalties will save you quite a few "WTF!" moments.

I do not care for the direction of the sound. The announcer is fine, takes a bit of getting used to. The umpires are horrific and you will find yourself looking to mute them after just a few games. Thankfully the announcer and audience talk so much you won't miss the umpires. If they had an option to use SMB2 or SMB3 umpires I would gladly take it.

I wish we would have stuck with the "Metal" Music sound of SMB3, the EA jukebox playing all genres of music is not my gig.

The biggest improvement of the series is the franchise. Trying to put a team together and keep people happy is an enjoyable challenge. Even if they are happy, if the player doesn't feel like they fit in, they will say they are not having fun and walk off the team, even with a 99 loyalty score.

I am updating my score from a 7 to an 8 due to becoming more familiar with the product. I am also saying that to really experience just how much of an upgrade this is over 3, you need to put it on a big screen and listen with more than the handheld speakers.

As you select teams, it usually takes 10-15 seconds for the next player/team to show.

If you plan to customize this game, don't!

Unless you can patch this yourself, you'll be waiting through EVERY menu.

EA continues to destroy good game franchises.

And Metalhead did a great job by not having too much microtransactions and improving the gameplay and the core. What's more is improving the customization options, improving the depth and having the legends. Making for one very fun baseball game. Full Review »
