Con dos tableros mínimo más el juego sería notable, por lo demás es un juego que cumple con el factor de diversión multijugador, el uso de joy- cons tiene sus pros y sus contras.

Not the best Mario Party, but still able to have loads of fun playing with people, locally. Some of the game modes/content could've been excluded and they could've added more levels in the main game, to give it more replay value.

To some people these drawbacks is a huge deal, but on my case, I have a family at home that can pick this game and enjoy altogether in front of a TV without any problems playing 80 mini-games using the single joy con per player. It is still very much a fun party game and not bad at all, it really depends on your situation; so if you live alone and prefers to use pro-controller then definitely this game is not for you.

Instead of blindlessly picking Yoshi every game, you think about the board layout and whether your character's dice will help you on the way. Each dice block is perfectly balanced (except for Daisy's and Donkey Kong's) and provides for a strategic take that refines the gameplay. Plus, though many shrugged them off as 'meh they're fine', the minigames are FANTASTIC, and even better than Mario Parties 4, 5, 9, 10 and Superstar's excellent ones (My favourite being Fuzzy Flight School). However if you're not looking to play the boards over and over and want to face some other new challenges, Mario opens his gloved palm and offers you a buncha more fun side modes, but I won't spoil it for you. If you like Mario Party, or you want to be the attractive guy who pulls out a Switch OLED, Joy-Cons and a copy of this game from your pocket, this is a must play.

    FULL REVIEW:
I’ve never played a party game. Due to my long-time connection to Nintendo, however, I wanted to give the Mario Party franchise a shot. Luckily, Super Mario Party offers a solid refresh to the series. The title’s primary game mode includes five boards in total, and while they are all linear, its only goal is to use coins and obtain stars, the winning currency. Each playable character comes with a unique dice block, and despite some blocks being less useful than others, it doesn’t affect gameplay too much. After each round of turns rolling the dice, players must compete in a minigame, earning them coins to use towards stars depending on where they finish. After ten to twenty rounds, a player is chosen as the victor after the game supplies star freebies to whoever struggles to get them throughout the game. In its defense, it makes the family-friendly gameplay much more forgiving if you are inexperienced or have bad luck. However, it does remain an annoyance to more experienced players.

Super Mario Party also includes a few other game modes. River Survival is a co-op mode where four players get as far as possible in a riverboat before the timer runs out. Players increase their timer by completing minigames. Partner Party has two sets of two players on nonlinear versions of the Mario Party’s boards. It makes sense, as it's essentially the same game mode but instead focusing on teamwork. Sound Stage is a rhythm game, Challenge Road is a single-player mode similar to one found in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, and Toad’s Rec Room includes some minigames that look similar to a few from Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics. Lastly, Free Play, Mariothon, and Square Off all focus on minigames in their own ways. One of the issues with Mario Party seems to be redundancy, and I’m not sure if it’s good or bad.

Unfortunately, Super Mario Party does come with some issues. The lowest number of rounds in the primary game mode takes about an hour to finish, making it difficult to play if someone’s under a time crunch. The prerequisites for each locked character are rather ominous because of what players must do to unlock them, which the game never explicitly hints at. I find it surprising because of its family-friendly nature, causing the title’s long-term gameplay to become more time-consuming than enjoyable. Many locked characters in Nintendo’s games unlock simply by playing them, and Super Mario Party decided to go in a different direction. While the title is a great party and minigame experience, it includes some avoidable flaws that need ironing out.

While I applaud (and enjoy) the extra modes and changes to the system (e.g. the individual dice is great, but could use a little balancing) that Nintendo has added, it feels that it comes about at a loss of development towards the original game itself. I think that they should have made (and hoping they will in DLC) bigger boards in addition to the current boards offered. It really feels skimmed down. The wife likes this Mario Party (her first) and I am happy with that. But, personally, after playing most of the previous installments, I'm left wanting.

Let's bring a stop to shamelessly approving everything Nintendo makes and offer valid criticism and complement to their titles.

Sure, there's some other party modes apart from that, but honestly, the only thing I could care, is to play a Mario Party the way it's supposed to play. Not that we all move together on a s*** car!

Like previous games, this still sucks if you're going for single play. Just forget it if you don't have anyone to play with. Don't count on it as well if you're planning online play. That sucks too! It's limited to play a few mini-games and it's very laggy. However, if you could arrange 2 or 3 more friends to play with, that's another story, but still, I feel Nintendo could have done a bit better on this.

The mini-games are very good for the most part, but there's only 4 boards and I'm not sure about this compact format they have now, but that's not even my biggest complaint. I fell that now is too easy for anyone to get stars, it only cost 10 coins (instead of 20 from previous games) and even players who didn't get the first place on mini-games receives coins. That's a bit unfair to players who strive the most to win mini-games. Also, each board match takes longer than before, damaging the match pace. Mostly because of the overdone characters animations. From simple actions like rolling the dice to Toaddete (who is now the star keeper) taking foverer to move to one place to another. Everything moves so slow! Also you cannot skip cpu actions. Why making us watch the whole sequence of the cpu talking to the shop seller? It doesn't sound like a big deal, but it really damages the match flow.

Thankfully, it's something really easy to fix on a DLC. If Nintendo does it, I will upgrade my score to an 8, maybe 9 if they add more boards to it.

In conclusion, it's still not the perfect Mario Party we were hoping for, but that's the right way. Never get rid again from the N64 formula. Never!

    Genre

    Party

    Gameplay

It’s simple, it’s a video game board game. Your goal is simple, at the end of the game your goal is to have more stars than your opponents. You primarily get stars by purchasing them on the board with 10 coins, yes you read that correctly. It is no longer 20 coins to purchase a star.

If you have never played a Mario Party game, the gameplay loop is very simple. It’s a 4 player game (if you don’t have enough humans then computers play as extras) and a standard game is traditionally 20 rounds. Now my friends and I have played around 5 times already and we have chosen to play 10 rounds. Even as a Mario Party fan, 20 rounds often felt like too long. Towards the end of a game, it started to feel stagnant with 10 rounds it never feels stagnant.

In each round, each player will roll a dice and depending on the number they roll that determines the number of spaces they move (revolutionary stuff for a board game). In the first 8, Mario Party’s every character had the same basic 1-6 die. In this game, the dice are shaken up a little bit. Instead of just having the standard 1-6 die, you also have a character specific die that you can choose to roll instead. Each character die is different so if you chose different characters every time you play, each game has the potential to feel a little different.

So moving on from a different kind of die, on your turn after you roll the die. Your ultimate goal is to be constantly moving towards the Star on the board. The first person to arrive at the star may purchase the star for 10 coins. After a star has been purchased, the star location is then moved to another location on the map. So now everyone has to change focus and move onto the new star location.

Now you may be wondering, how do I earn coins so I buy these stars? There are two ways to do so, 1 is by moving around the board and landing on certain spaces and you get coins depending on the space. Fair warning though, there are certain spaces that take coins. The other way is the final main game mechanic of Mario Party and that’s the mini-games.

At the end of every round, you play a Mini-game. Depending on how well you do in the mini-game you will reward you with coins. This can vary from 10 to 0. There is potential for more but that depends on the mini-game but that’s not too important. The difference between a good Mario Party game and a bad one, are the mini-games. This latest installment has about 80 mini-games and a vast majority I would call fun. There are a few that not so great but I would say that’s a handful.

    Single Player

The weakest part of all Mario Party games is the single player. It’s just not fun to play by yourself. As a matter of fact, I would go as far to say that if you play Mario Party by yourself that’s kind of sad. But of course, there is a single player mode that you’re essentially forced to play because that’s how you unlock 2 characters. The good news is, it’s not awful. You just have to play through (and win) all 80 mini-games but the bad news is, some of the mini-games are completely random so there is potential you will get stuck on a specific mini-game for longer than you would like. If you’re wondering how long it would take to unlock both characters, my friend Manny and I played the mode together. Just passed the controller back and forth and it took us approximately an hour and a half to unlock both. Not awful but there were a couple moments that were classic Mario Party B.S.

    Online

This is the biggest disappointment of the entire game, the lack of online features. Nintendo is charging people to play online now and you can’t play a game of Mario Party. You can play random mini-games online but you can not play a game of Mario Party online. That’s unacceptable, I hope that gets patched and fixed because there is no reason for the game to have full online support.

The minigames are fun but they could have been a bit more competitive like in the first 3 games. The starts are too cheap (10 coins) and this can lead to easily rack up stars when they appear in convenient places right in front of the previous star for example. In the online mode you can only play some minigames, you cannot play the party mode on online, which I can kind of see, but for the most part it doesn't make sense. I want to play some classic online Mario Party with some of my friends overseas, but it turns out I can only play minigames against them.

The party mode is also fairly lacking, as it only has 4 boards, is lacking in terms of dices, and the fact that you can simply buy an item to get you right beside a star makes the game really boring as a round is done in around 20 minutes.

A lot of the characters are also, strange, but the biggest problem I have about them is the fact that they have their own unique dices. None of the dices are even, in fact it is easy to see which dices are better than others, for example the Goompa is definitely better than Wario, and Rosalina is pretty much better than Donkey Kong.

At least it's better Mario Party 9-11, so there is that to it.

The graphics, control, difficulty, and variety of games are there and that is what makes them atop of the Mario Party franchise and I like how things can change on the dime during gameplay. What I think really is a bummer is you really cannot play it via handheld. So if you own a Switch Lite and bought the game you are out of luck. The other issue is that there are not many board maps to really play on.

Overall it is very good but just not great.

It's absolutely ridiculous and something that should never have been implemented.

I got it on launch date, but I have tried playing all the modes and getting all unlockables before sharing my review to see how things sunk in. One part of me wants to absolutely love it, and another thinks it's not that great. I think this one was hyped up way too hard. They had ditched the vehicle mechanic and returned with the classic gameplay, they returned with minigames after every turn, and the character roster is diverse and the best the series has ever had. HOWEVER, this game has some glowing flaws that still cannot be overlooked.

Boards: first and foremost, there is a problem with the boards. There are only 3 unlocked from the start, and the fourth is unlocked after playing on all 3. The fruit island one is probably the only one I'll give a passable score to, and even then it's nothing noteworthy for the series. The other 2 boards are just boring and gray. The unlockable Kamek board is alright, but still quite boring. The boards needed more color and personality. And what happened to happening spaces? I feel like almost next to nothing happens on the boards and that they are just a means to an end really, and on top of that, they are all very TINY, which I will discuss in my next point. I just hope that Nintendo brings new boards into the game as free updates or DLC, preferably the former because this game was $65 and doesn't have nearly the content to justify that price.

Character dies: This is one of the most polarizing parts of the game, in my opinion. I think it is a great idea, and part of me hates it. And this, unfortunately, is why I think that the boards are tiny. Some characters (such as Donkey Kong and Bowser), have some great numbers on their special die (8+), but they have a lot of chances for 1's or 0's, too. Now this does make for character balance in a sense, but still it will have you moving 0 or just a few spaces each turn for a while, and while it shakes things up, I think it is what keeps the boards from flourishing as much as they should. I also wish they'd bring back the 1-10 dice block. 1-6 is what also keeps the boards small. Maybe do an update and try to alter out some of the character dies. It makes me feel like at times I have to be a character I do not like (Wario or Diddy Kong) just for their dies and not be able to be who I want to be (Bowser Jr. or Donkey Kong) because their special dies are so pathetic.

    Now for the good:

Minigames return!: Mario Parties 9 and 10 were notorious for the vehicle mechanic and the removal of minigames after every turn. It lead to sort of chaos as to leaving it up to random chance (random minigames on random spaces) or minigame spaces which could be landed on a lot or none at all. In this game, they do them after each turn which does bring back that Mario Party feeling I've missed for far too long. And on top of that, the minigames are fantastic! Seriously I can't think of a single one I don't enjoy in some way.

Characters: As I said before, the character selection is wonderful. It is the most I've seen in any Mario Party game. Just missing a few, but most classic characters and favorites are all here.

Game modes: There are so many different modes it is unreal, and there are so many different ways to play to keep you and your friends going. I do wish that maybe they cut back on some of these, though, in order to focus a little more on the traditional Mario Party game mode, but I shouldn't complain about versatility.

In the end, the game isn't terrible, but it's just not exactly scratching that Mario Party itch that myself and I'm sure many others thought before it came out. It certainly has potential, but I feel it is a missed opportunity until we can get more boards and more eventful boards, which may not even happen. Minigames are the shining part of the series, but we still can't overlook the boards, and I feel that's what they did here, and it's just far too big of a problem than can be overlooked. It's just not worth the price tag.

One problem is the maps are small and so few in number. The fact stars only cost 10 coins makes it too easy to get them and the random placement of the star location on small maps make this game 100% luck based. This results in a game where no matter how far ahead you are though playing well in mini games or how lucky you've been, the game can going to anyone at anytime for no reason other than complete chance. This has always been the case but not this extreme and unfortunately it makes the main Party mode unenjoyable after a few games.

On the positive side the game looks fantastic and is very well polished. The mini games themselves are super fun and some may even been the best in the series. There's actually a number of other game modes people don't know about aside from the main Party Mode. River survival is a path based game where you work as a team and play mini games to gain more time. This was a surprisingly fun and I would recommend it. Another fun mode is Sound stage which involves rhythm base joy con controls. Each of these 2 extra modes have their own pool of mini games which is a fantastic idea.

Over all I'd say this is defiantly a worth while title as a family game or a good drinking game to play with friends on a night in, but would say to save your money if you're buying it to play single player or at least wait until its down to around £35. Hope to see DLC in the future.

A decent but flawed party game in the Mario Party series. It got a bit better after Nintendo updated it to support online play.

    PROS:

    - A boatload of minigames.
    - Accessible and fun.
    - Nice motion controls.

    CONS:

    - Just a few boards.
    - Requires one joy-con per player.
    - Nintendo didn't give it much support, and already replaced it with another Mario Party game on the Switch.

Weak and dissappointing, mostly due to few minigames being played in a standard game and a small selection of minigames.

The rhythm games section is the best part, and being able to play the tutorial for minigames without entering some kinda special practice mode is a great idea. Hope they use both in the next installment, where the game is actually fun.

The minigames are mostly fun with some of my favourites being Sizzling Stakes, Trip Navigator and Pie Hard (love that name). I do like that you can practice minigames on the control screen now which is a nice feature. Now the negatives, There are only four boards in this game! That is far too low and on top of that none of them are even that good. That alone brings the score down a lot. Stars only cost 10 coins now instead of 20 which is a downgrade from before. The side modes in this game were fine but they get boring after a while, like River Survival and Sound Stage. And they kinda take away from the focus of the main game. They finally introduced an online mode for Mario Party but they took way too long to add it when it should have been there from the beginning.

Introduction: Super Mario Party is the 11th main series entry in the long-running franchise of board games meet mini-games. Most games in this series consist of heavy competitive gameplay against friends as you try to become the superstar, except for the mostly butchered Mario Party 9 and 10. Does this game live up to the past games of fun competition or is this game not very super?

Party Mode: The standard mode for most Mario Party entries. Nintendo changes up the formula this time by making smaller maps and smaller dice rolls. Each character has 2 dice blocks, one standard 1 through 6 dice and a special character die that has certain number rolls depending on what character you have chosen. I think this is a nice addition to the series, as it makes for more strategic gameplay and high risk, high reward moves. That’s sadly where my praise has to end due to the unbalanced nature of everything else. The coin economy in this game is straight broken. Coins are given out in abundant with very little chances of losing any. When losing coins, its only 5 or 10 coins max. Stars only cost 10 coins, mixing that in with players receiving too many coins and the map being small makes it so that everyone is getting an equal amount of stars most of the game. Items cost very little, between 2 to 5 coins, with the most overpower item, an item that sends you straight to the star being only 10 coins and easy to get. There are also these spaces in the game called ally spaces, which give you one random character that is not being used to play on the board. These allies give you their character block and roll an addition 1 to 2 dice roll on top of your dice roll. These can infinitely stack and can help someone get a star almost every turn they play. So you either have the problem of everyone being able to get the star all the time or the problem of only one person being able to get all the stars due to stacked allies since coins will never be an issue, everyone will always have enough coins for a star 90% of the time. At the end of each game, bonus stars are awarded for mostly trivial things that will give the win to some who failed at most things throughout the match. I like some of the concepts that Nintendo was going for in this new rendition of Mario Party, but it all fell flat due to balancing issues.

Partner Mode: Very similar to Party mode except it a 2 vs 2 with combine dice roll. You get to move around the board in any direction you like and movement is set up like an RTS Fire emblem kind of way. I feel like this mode is a bit more balance since you have to strategically land on the star space to get one, eliminating some of the problems I had with party mode.

River Survival: A co-op game where every player is in a boat going downstream. You work together to get more time, by popping balloons to activate mini-games for everyone to play, by making choices on which routes to take and, by helping each other avoid obstacles. This mode is the best mode in the game. It’s defiantly a fun mode to play with your friend, especially to defuse tension after playing the mess of party mode.

Sound Stage: Think of Rhythm Heaven mix with Wario Ware and motion controls. Matches of this mode only go on for 5 to 10 minutes. It’s a nice, short bust of fun but everyone playing it will get bored after 1 or 2 rounds of it.

Challenge Road: A single player mode with not much to offer. Can only be unlocked by playing all the multiplayer mode first (pretty ironic, if you ask me) and you have to play it to unlock 2 of the 4 locked characters. The only thing you do in this mode is complete a series of challenges within the games 80+ mini-games. Got pretty bored of this mode just wanting to unlock the character behind this wall.

Mini Games: I should talk about the mini-games since they make almost half of what makes a Mario Party game special. The mini-games make great use of the Switch's gimmicks. Some are a little boring and dull but most have that Mario Party charm. Even with the badly designed boards, most will have fun playing these mini-games.

Technical: The game looks great and blah, blah, blah… It’s a Nintendo game, it’s going to look and run great. The soundtrack is a little generic and not as memorable as some of the Mario Party games of the past. The UI in the game looks weirdly clean and not fitting for a Mario Party game.

Veridic: Super Mario Party has some cool ideas but at the end of the day, there is nothing super about it. Its main mode is a mess due to the new additions, co-op is the best part, which is pretty funny since that was the worst part of 9 and 10. Single player should have never been a thing but at least Nintendo still knows how to make some fun mini-games. I like the direction they were going for but this game ultimately fails at what makes Mario Party fun, competitive, and the series that we love so much.

Super Mario Party is a party game – a digital board game that is also a collection of minigames, as well as a few other modes that are also, in effect, collections of minigames, such as the cooperative River Race as well as the Sound Stage area, which is a party rhythm game.

Super Mario Party is a party game – a digital board game that is also a collection of minigames, as well as a few other modes that are also, in effect, collections of minigames, such as the cooperative River Race as well as the Sound Stage area, which is a party rhythm game.

The board game is the “heart” of Super Mario Party, and here, there are actually two closely related board games. The objective of each game is to collect stars, but there are two ways to play – as single players, and two teams of two. The individual player mode has you moving around a fairly linear board with a few branching paths, while the team mode has you moving around on a rectangular board with various features interrupting the flow through the board. In either case, your goal is to get enough coins and then to land on the star space, which allows you to buy a star, which then causes the star to move afterwards to a new location.

This mode is chaotic but reasonably okay. There’s some strategy involved – each character has special dice, which can be rolled instead of a normal six-sided die, with various dice giving less random results or more extreme results (Bowser, for example, has a die with 0, 0, 1, 8, 9, and 10 on it, while Shy Guy has 0, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4), but as the rolls are random, there’s only so much control you have over where you land. Various spaces have various effects, and while you can control what area of the board you’re aiming for, you have no guarantee of actually landing on critical spaces. The team game gives you a bit more control, as the players roll dice and have them added together to determine the team’s movement, and the board gives you more control over where you’re going. There are allies around the board (player characters who you aren’t playing as), which can give you additional movement as well as access to their dice. The team mode gives you more control over getting these, but both modes give you at least some access to them.

The minigames are ultimately at the heart of the game, and are where players make most of their coins. Some of these have the players competing against each other as individuals, while others have them paired randomly into teams (sometimes with your allied characters following you around a well!). These games are much more skill-based, which is both a good thing (more skilled players have an advantage) and a bad thing (it’s entirely possible for better players to literally never lose at the minigames).

All in all, this is an okay game, but it’s nothing particularly special; I wouldn’t play it very much, and it isn’t worth the asking price of $60.

The Sound Stage mode is a pretty generic rhythm game with Mario theming, which is cute enough, but very limited in scope.

The River Cruise mode has you paddling a raft down a river as a team while completing a series of team minigames against the clock to try and get more time. This mode is actually really easy, so while it is kind of nice to cooperate as a group, you’re going to succeed every time, which means that repeated trips can get boring after a while, especially as there isn’t all that much variety in what the actual river trip brings.

Finally, there’s Challenge Road, where you play through all 80 minigames back to back to try and get to the end of it. You can quit whenever you want and come back to it, but it is still nothing particularly exciting or special.

All in all, Super Mario Party is what it is – a mediocre party game. It is chaotic enough to create some potentially interesting moments, but ironically, the minigames may be *too* skill based, making it less random and thus making me wonder whether it’d be better to just play a game like Super Smash Bros. or Super Mario Kart, which are more fun as actual *games*.

If you can rent this from the local library for some short term dumb fun, that’s not a bad choice, but I can’t really say this would be worth buying – if you play it much at all on your own, you’ll get too good at the minigames to really be able to play it as a fun party game. The game itself is rather repetitive, so it isn’t something you want to play a ton of, and after about 17 hours or so, you’ll have seen literally everything the game has to offer many times over.

Pre release had hyped this up as a more return to the original formula i.e. no cars (didn't even bother playing those) but couldn't have been further from the truth. This turned out to be a a major disappointment for various reasons as many other people have noted in reviews.

    - There's only 4 boards. These 4 boards can barely be considered boards as they have a small grid like structure. It's almost as they tried doing some kind of grid like formula, scratched it, and said well heres 4 let's make it work. They are painfully pathetic, aesthetically and playability.

-Economy is bad. Stars are now 10 coins reduced from 20 of the original. Everyone gets coins from mini games also.

-Golden warp pipe is broke. This ties in with last point but a golden pipe is 10 coins which can be farmed to buy over and over and then buy 10 coin star. Don't remember much of the other items but not good.

-Dice block only goes to 6. No idea why they would change this but I'm sure it has to do with tiny boards for making this decision.

-Ally characters also impede flow of game. If someone gets one, two, three or even four, (don't know how many you can get) they are able to lap the entire board it makes no sense. Now had they done it where you get an ally and can use their special dice ability, that would have been fine as that idea is the only decent new addition to the game. But it doesn't work that way they roll extra dice on the turn allowing for more travel on the tiny maps with broken economy.

-Online support was a joke. This made it sound like, and I'm sure most people agree, that online meant you could play the maps online with others. Not the case of-course. You're allowed to compete in FIVE mini games online to see who wins.

    - And my least favorite I saved for last, motion controls & Joy Con. This is the worst aspect in that you cannot use the pro controller or even two joy cons. You have to use one joy con but it gets worse...there's motion control. I hated that about the Wii (least favorite NINTENDO console ever) but now you have to give high fives and other motion BS. Don't get me started on the motion control specific modes I'm sure as F*** not getting up pretending I'm in a marching band.

And there you have it for reasons that ruin the game. But why 4 /10? Well, realistically I'm sure some kids and people out there will enjoy so even though I overall don't like it, I can see where some may enjoy it. Especially kids who never played originals. As an adult who grew up on the originals and probably too old for my age to be playing Mario party (F*** it) there's bound to be some young kids or dumb adults who will enjoy it. I, however, would not recommend this Mario Party.

You cannot see characters special dices when choosing characters which make the game entirely unbalanced. Since every character has a specific dice... some are ALOT better than others which again only advanced players would know. The partner mechanic... which makes it so that you get a partner on the board, additional dice roles and sometime help in mini games makes the game excessively unbalanced. The prices of stars are too low (10 coins instead of 20) making it so that it is too easy for the lead character to get mulp stars. Stars are super easy to get, hardly an accomplishment, and with the big dice rolls and small levels you can some times get 2 stars in a round. Other games had a little more skill element, this one feels a lot more luck based. Coins feel a lot less valued, in regards to bonus stars, there is no Coin star or reward for saving coins. You can ONLY use joy cons, which honestly sucks. Many of the games use tilt controls, which sometimes fun, but often times frustrating and messy. There arent a lot of stages. The alternate game modes are fun maybe the first time around but are not rewarding in the slightest. Theres maybe ONE thing is this game to unlock. Why! Like give me a reason to keep playing. What really bothers me is no story mode. I get it, mario party is a party game, but this game has ZERO value played a lone, where as some of the older games in the series had single player modes that I really enjoyed.

Honestly this is a good game, if you're a baby. But i'd rather play any mario party from mario party 1-6. This game isn't trash, but its not worth the hefty price tag. I think mario kart, or the jack box party pack, or mario vs rabbids, would be a better muitiplayer/party game than this.

    1. There are ONLY FOUR BOARDS! I remember playing Mario Party games on Game Cube that had way more variety. That was a decade ago. Given the advancement in technology, there should be MORE boards, not less.

    2. You can't play boards online. Not even with your friends in a private match. Instead you are forced to play a small set of mini-games, over and over again. I bought a Nintendo Online Subscription specifically for this game when it came out. I cancelled it after a month.

    3. So many features in this game just seem poorly balanced. Numerous items are completely useless to buy, while others are over-powered. Stars are waaay too cheap. After only a couple turns, there isn't even a risk of not being able to afford one. The random mini-game wheel seems to heavily favour playing the same games over-and-over again. Certain characters' dice are just awful compared to others.

I can't believe Nintendo is still selling this lackluster game for full price. It's been out for almost two years, and despite many complaints, they haven't updated it at all.

Yet, me and my friends nonetheless got excited to play what was advertised to be a step in the right direction for the franchise in Super Mario Party. So we got it on launch and were ready for a night of fun and battle. However, we only got 2 games and 25 combined turns in before we came to an unfortunate conclusion: this game wasn't fun.

The game was developed by NDcube, who had also developed Mario Party 9 and 10 (what a coincidence). The game gives you various modes to play, from River Survival to Online Mariothon (more on that later), with the titular Mario Party being the main attraction. The first alarm bell went off when there were a grand total of... 4 boards to play. Now let me say that quantity doesn't trump quality, but these maps simply aren't expansive enough to justify the low count. Even then, if the maps were small but packed full of fun, there wouldn't be that big of a problem. However, despite said small size, turns can't help but feel like a slog to get through. This of course isn't due to the two best additions to the series: character exclusive dice and allies.

Each character gets their own dice, which means that character selection is no longer just a cosmetic choice (although that still can occur). These dice can range from real baller status (Bowser can either roll 2 -3 coins, an 1, an 8, a 9, and a 10) to mediocre (Monty Mole is just the regular dice but with a +2 coins instead of an 1). This seems to be an attempt to add some flavor to the game and the attempts don't stop there. If you land on an ally space, you can get an ally who give you their dice along with either an 1 or a 2 each turn. These two features would be the complimentary features of a good Mario Party, but they're the few positives I can think of (still appreciate it though).

A major issue of this game is a big one: the minigames aren't as interactive and seem very bland compared to the past editions. No longer can you punch or jump in most of the minigames, as the lack of interactivity bogs down the main course. However, at times the forced switch controller usage (no pro controllers fellas) can be legitimately fun and engaging; these times are very few and far between though.

The lack of turns you can play through is a blessing, as the way the game is no more than 25 turns means the slog can be done quickly.

Online Mariothon, in theory, could've been good. Had there been board play online, even with the mediocre game, it would've been another step in the right direction. So what actually happens? A random group of 4 people play 5 minigames randomly selected out of 10 minigames. I think that speaks for itself.

So why does this game lack the fun that the first 8 Mario Parties had? The answer is simple: this game isn't a Mario Party at heart. It lacks the competitive edge that those had. One might argue that those game were like the video game Monopoly, a game where you pretty much lose your friends. If you think that attitude wasn't your style, that's fine. However, even then the game isn't fun. This leads to the most fatal issue of all: its staying power. I personally believe most people will never touch this game after a maximum of 50 or so turns, as the lack of online and good gameplay ultimately gives this game an early expiration date.

But before I finish, let me say a few things. Firstly, the fact that the game could get new maps and be updated to a better game doesn't mean you shouldn't criticize this game for being as bad as it is. The same criticisms that are levied at Microsoft and Sony should be levied more so at Nintendo, who was deemed by many to be above them due to their lack of paying for online (which has changed). Even then, I doubt the additions would extend the game's shelf life.

And now to end on a somber note, I'd like to quote a certain individual who was against this lack of fun:
"The game, is fun. The game, is a battle. If it's not fun, why bother? If it's not a battle, where's the fun? It's a test that you pass, or a quest that you fail. A race against time, fun and battle, always lock together. But the game is also something else. Its a journey, a passport to new worlds. Maybe even... An Odyssey. A look, a feel, an exploration. Close your focus and open your mind. Yes, the journey requires the right ticket. And that ticket, is the Nintendo Switch. But in the end, it's not just where you can take YOUR game, its where your game, can take YOU... So lets go." -Reggie Fils Aime

It is an extremely rare scenario that you wont have 10 coins at any point during the game. You'll almost never be in a scenario where you make it to a star and can't afford one.

This in turn makes minigames trivial. Since the value of a coin is next to nothing now, the importance of actually winning minigames to earn coins plummets. The main appeal of Mario party now has little to no relevance to the board game.

In previous installations of the series the game required a combination of minigame prowess, coin management, and a little bit of luck. Now the game requires little more than praying to RNGesus so you can stamepede around collecting as many stars as you can; limited by nothing more than your ability to roll high numbers. Previously this wasn't a viable strategy because you needed to ensure you had 20 coins before passing over a star.

Example, after coming in 3rd place in the first mini-game, I bought a star on turn 2. In another game on turn 5, after losing every single mini-game, and rolling 1s. I used items and rolled a 15. I earned 3 stars in a single turn, buying 2 stars in one turn, and getting one from a hidden block. Boards are tiny and there are no interesting tiles to land on. All the usable items are lackluster. Mini-games are solid however.

Normally buying two stars in a single turn would require some form of achievement. This is not the case in Super Mario Party. As far as I'm concerned this game is just the participation trophy of the franchise.

They demand payment for online gaming and can't deliver what people want. Don't buy this until they can actually give us Mario Party. This game should have bigger boards, ability to create custom rounds (20 coins per star, +1 blue, -1 red, etc), and online pay worthy of their fee. Expand

I think I may have had too high of expectations. I was stoked at the thought of having a new Mario Party following in the foot steps of great games on the switch like Mario Odyssey or BOTW, but this game was incredibly vanilla and downright lazy in execution.

Challenging and Interesting board game levels? Nope, each of the 4 total boards was lacking depth and imagination. The very last board game for example, runs in such a small loop that everyone gets a star and there's no chance whatsoever as to how the session will end up. There is no strategy in this game, it's all pure luck. What I enjoyed about the previous board games, was the inspiration they took from the Super Mario Universe. This one was all about banality and cookie cutter cliches.

Mini Games? Yeah they were not too bad, but nothing really that special. I missed the cut throat nature of the previous mini games. This one's a bit too family friendly. The biggest sin of this game is that they force you to use the mini controllers per player from the switch - which really ruins the entire experience of the game. There is no option to use a full size controller.

Replayability? zero - see board game gripe above.

Overall, this felt like a money grab from Nintendo. I expect quality when I play a Nintendo game, and this one really fell short. To add to this, I can't understand why anyone is rating this highly, I would put this up there with Bethesda's failing with Fallout 76. Don't buy this game, it's not even worth $20.00 They should have called it "Below Average Mario Party".

Don't understand the hype, noticeably a step down from early titles, only 4 boards, doesn't explain the rules in VS battles, and stars are so cheap that it often becomes a game of who gets the best roll early on. Not really fun except for a few mini-games, definitely not worth 80CAD.

I just discovered last night, after having dropped a second $60 for a copy for my mom who lives 2500 miles away, that the online multi-player is basically nonexistent. Thanks for taking an otherwise wonderful family game and making a mockery of online gaming capabilities. Thanks for making me question every reasonable assumption I've ever made. Congratulations, you sold me a car with one wheel. Expand

Not enough maps you only get four that are recycled to make it seem like eight. There's mainly a bunch of mini games. Somehow this went from a Mario board game to a Mario themed mini game. It sucks its nothing like they used to be. I'll never buy another Mario party again

What's that? You have a few friends over and want to play some Mario Party? Well I hope you like two player only because the game doesn't support any other controller apart from Joycons. What a load of ****

Looks nice. Lacks substance. Not worth the price tag. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

The mini games aren't fun and there's not even one ground pound mini game where can ground pound others.

at first the game seems great, but after 4 hours of gameplay you find out you have played all the boards. Nintendo is never going to make new dlc's - they have gotten greedy like with Mario kart Tour, and the games will show.... unfortunately.

New to metacritic but want to vent my frustration with this game. I spent 60 dollars on this recently and as someone who grew up playing some great Mario party games in the past this new one for is a joke. Online play is only a fraction of the minigames and you don't get even get to play on the board. This could've been a great game. I doubt it will happen but I wont change this review until its fixed. Super Mario Party goes back to its roots and delivers just like it should. The vast number of different modes, really prevents any to shine the brightest, but the entire game is a small step back that greatly leaps forward. It makes us only more excited for the next entry. Something we haven't felt with the Mario Party series in ages...

Both players and critics agreed that in the last couple of years Mario Party’s quality has been dropping. Nintendo decided to go for broke this time and I hope slapping “Super” in front of the title heralds the restart of the franchise, because SMP finally delivers what we expected. [12/2018, p.51]

Complex and unpredictable board game, numerous mini-games and being able to play as your favorite character – those are the three pillars of Mario Party’s success. Neither of these elements was polished to perfection over the years, but together they offer a very enjoyable experience. [Issue#234, p.72]
