It's not perfect, but I've owned and played all the console Mario Partys - and this is the best one. It really is the most accessible, and the graphics are gorgeous. Mini Games are mostly great, some stellar ones, some that are a little meh, but always lots of laughs in the room for each.

By the way, my 9 score is as a 4-player game. As a solo 1 player game, it's probably a 6 or 7.

Super Mario Party is fun, but it leaves me a little bit conflicted.

I (and many others from what I can tell) prefer this style of gameplay to the 'all moving in a vehicle' from Mario Parties 9 and 10. The other modes are nice additions too, and really take advantage of the Switch's versatility.

However, on the other hand, you're forced to use a single Joy-Con controller for each player. If you want to play Super Mario Party in handheld mode, with a Pro Controller, or with two Joy-Con via the Joy-Con Grip, you're out of luck. Since I find holding single Joy-Con awkward, this was a let-down for me, despite the many ways the controller is used (it's too small to play with comfortably in my opinion).

Still, control issues/limitations aside, Super Mario Party is a welcome return to form. It seems that fewer (if any) minigames this time are luck-based, which is a plus for me (I prefer games to be more skill-oriented).

Would be a great game to play with friends, if they don't mind the arguably awkward controls.

It's a good game. Not so many mini-games, boards... really tiny (the stars moves often really close to the character who took the star just before).
But it works, all ppl i've played with are full of joy, laughing, asking to continue to play; even sometimes refusing to play at first and loving it ! It's really nice game but not much more.

With every Mario Party I played came across some mini games that I rolled my eyes to. When I played this one I never really saw that. Sure, not all of them are masterpieces, but I never really felt like any of them were that bad. A complaint I see often about this game is that there are only 4 maps, and I agree with it to a point but it never really mattered to me. If you like a lot of variety in your maps, don’t expect a lot from this. The regular party is great and all, but where the game really shines is with the other modes. River Survival is only a LOT of fun when playing with friends, but otherwise not that bad. Partner Party is great because you have a lot more freedom in where you move around the map and it’s just pure party fun. You’ll have a great time playing this one with friends. Challenge Road is probably my favorite, you complete all 80 minigames with a certain objective to complete (I.e. complete this in 10 seconds, beat the rival team) and it even includes an expert mode once finished with the normal mode. Now it’s time to talk criticism. The only reason I gave this game an 8 out of 10 instead of a 9 or a perfect 10 is because of the Online Mariothon. You can only play about 10 of the minigames and in its current state it is unplayable. There are way more than 10 4 player minigames and it even would’ve been nice to add in a few of the 2v2 or 1v3 minigames. But besides that, I was happy with my purchase, and I would recommend any Switch owner to get this game. Expand

I've played this game for about 5 hours so far.
Positives - The car is gone! Lots of action, huge character selection, and lots of game modes. Best Mario Party in years by far.
Negatives - Maps are very small and even a smaller selection. Im assuming there will be more through updates. The games are VERY slow paced and can take well over an hour just to complete one game. Settings

I would like to have the ability to change the price for stars, and motion sensor mini games off. This is not yet an option. Like most nintendo games lack of online play is frustrating.

Even with the negatives I do see them as fixable with future updates. I enjoy it very much, and playing with friends is a blast. Pick it up for yourself but maybe wait a few months to see how serious the devs take the updates.

The game really gets your heart beating and makes you forget about all the stress at the back of your head and it's just simple to teach people who are new to Mario Party how to play. The first Mario Party game I got was Mario Party 8 for the Wii, but many years later I find myself buying this game. I may sound biased towards Nintendo but that's because I grew up in a Nintendo household and Nintendo takes up half of my childhood, and they make original titles and creative new ways to play. Great game! I recommend this to people who are having family troubles or getting back together with longtime friends.

Quite fun to play, better than previous Mario Parties and more in line with some of the classic ones. Having an online option is also good, would've been perfect if the online was strenghtened and had more options too.

While the amount of boards is very small, it’s still a decent game. If dlc comes with new boards I’ll rate higher. The character roster is decent. It’s better than the 9 and 10 games, but falls a bit short with 8 and earlier.

I did over play it when it first released; I believe coming back to it and playing it a year later, the biggest thing that sticks out to me, negatively, would be a lack of boards. Although, it is definitely a fun party game played in small bursts. The controls work well and the motion related controls tend to work most of the time.

The new personal dice mechanic is outstanding, gives so much perspective to the game. Of course it seems like some dice are stronger than other, but that depends on the map and mode you are playing. The only turn down for me is the lack of maps, 4 doesn't seem enough and I am hoping for more in the future. The maps are much smaller, which I am having mixed feelings about, it's definitely not bad, there is so much going on with each turn, so many stars acquired. When I first saw that 20 turns is the max on most maps I felt that it will be too casual again, but they are trying to deliver a new dynamic, which I believe was a hard job to do and I can surely say they did well. 1-2 hours per game feels more than enough. I can't even describe how much I love the allies, another entirely new mechanic we are getting in MP. Then again, we have partner party, for the first time ever I am enjoying playing doubles. In the past it felt just like they are eliminating the 1v3 games, but now there is so much strategy involved, you can combine dice combos for better movement or income. And last but not least the river survival. For the first time a fully cooperative mode for all 4 people, each and every one of the co op games is a lot of fun. The river itself it's easy to beat, but nevertheless it's fun. Ready.... YEAH!
People are complaining about online mode being restricted only to minigames. Are you serious people? This is the first MP that even has online mode, maybe they will add more in the future. This new game has offered so much in one title, not like any other so far. My final thoughts on this game is that as I said, this is the first good mario party we are getting since 7, it's been 13 long years. I can easily say this Mario Party is in the TOP 5 of the franchise, maybe even TOP 3.

A very charming experience with excellent presentation. The variety of gameplay options and a multitude of new strategies yield a very enjoyable party this time around. My only critique is that some of the minigames feel very bland and average. Overall, a fun and refreshing Mario Party game that's worth the buy.

The newest - and the Switch's first - edition of Mario Party breathes new life into the franchise with a plethora of game modes. Yes, the online mode at release is certainly lacking which is why this review is 9 instead of 10/10. Do yourself a favor and pick this game up to play with friends and family alike as this is where the game shines.

I guess my only complaint is that there's only 4 boards. I can see our gaming group plowing through those rather quickly, so I hope DLC is on it's way to enhance the selection. Then I could easily give this game a 9.

Really fixed the series. Things are back to the way they should have always stayed. But more than that it has made the game more skill based, by making the dice have lower numbers and special numbers. Each turn has an important decision to make about where you will likely land.

The Mario Party series has seen a lot in the last few years and sadly to say, not much of it has been good. Ever since the infamous fall that is Mario Party 9, the series has not seen stable ground for a while. Ever since the infamous fall that is Mario Party 9, the series has not seen stable ground for a while. All this is my personal opinion, but 10 attempted to give 9's gameplay another chance, but that still fell short. Island Tour was a stranger turn for the series that still felt weak in my eyes. Star Rush was a step in the right direction and lasted longer than the other three and the Top 100 was a nostalgic rush that was executed rather poorly. So what of Super Mario Party? Where does that stand? Hopefully my thoughts help with that.

Let's start with the gameplay... it's finally back. They have finally done away with the car and brought back the individual moving turns with coin collecting and star hunting. I'm sure this is what fans have been waiting for. And I for one did indeed enjoy it. I've played a few matches of the main game and I did thoroughly enjoy myself and the friends I played with can say the same. While I did love the Top 100, this is the first core, home console game I've fully enjoyed since Mario Party 8 and that alone boosts my spirits. The gameplay is there, but is is a bit simpler than the first 8 core titles. There is the game's own unique spaces, such as Ally Spaces, but outside of that, the basics are mostly the only other things; Blue and Red for coins, Happening for events, Item for items and Lucky/Unlucky spaces for a bit of random spice. I can't fault this simple approach, even if I myself prefer the diversity of the originals. But Super Mario Party also does one thing that only one other title has ever done; the character you play as has a much bigger impact on the game. In a similar vein to Mario Party 7's Character Capsules and identically to Star Rush, each character has their own dice block, each with a different variety of faces that can either move you farther than a normal dice block, not move you at all or give/take away coins. There's a bit more strategy to dice rolls and even if the character has a bad looking dice, it can still be useful under the right circumstances. My only true gripe with the mode is the lack of boards. There are only four, two less than the average game. And the boards themselves are very small, small enough that, with a stacked team of allies, someone can cover half the board in a turn and get multiple stars if they're lucky. It feels a bit too compacted in my opinion, but it's still fun if you have a nice group to play with.

The mini-games are the next topic and they do a great job of showcasing what the Joy-Cons can do. I didn't play 1-2 Switch, but I feel this game trumps it without even lifting a finger. The games can rely on motion controls, standard button inputs or even the Joy-Con's rumble features, which are a bit more unique, even compared to the GameCube titles. They are a great set of mini-games and while I haven't played all of them, the ones I have played are pretty great.

Sadly I haven't played many modes outside of the main party so I can't say much there. I may expand on this review later on when I have. But for now, Super Mario Party is the step the series has desperately needed. Perfect? I wouldn't say that, but it's fun in it's own unique way and is still a great improvement from the previous titles. Perhaps in the future, Nintendo will fully go back to the expansive style of the first 8 games, but for now, I can safely say this is another series Nintendo has improved upon. Super Mario Party is straight up fun and I'm glad I can say that. And in my eyes, there's only one franchise left that can use a proper fixing. Paper Mario, here's hoping you're next.

Both players and critics agreed that in the last couple of years Mario Party’s quality has been dropping.
