The story mode isn't quite interesting, since it's based on playing pre-made levels and earning coins to build Princess Peach's castle up again, after it got deleted by the ''Undo Dog''.

The course world offers levels made from other players, an endless mode, Ninji speedruns and a world maker.

While the multiplayer isn't the greatest, because of the connection issues.

Not even can you create your very own unique Mario levels, but you can also create your very own worlds! While this feature doesn't have that many tools to play around with, it basically gives players the option to create their very own Super Mario game.

Super Mario Maker 2 gives players the oppunitunity to use their creativity and share them with other people around the world. The game is definitely remarkable.

Sorting through the not-so-great levels and levels designed to exploit the game make it a bit tough at times, but it is easy to sink hundreds of hours into this game. Easily one of the best titles on the Switch.

Some level creators know the creation tools inside out and have created some truly marvellous levels. Since it's release, there have been two free major content updates which has kept the game fresh. You can even play as Link, sword, bow, bombs and shield all in tow.

As I said before, I've only made 2 levels. So goes to show you don't have to get this game just for the creation side.

It is an infinite mario maker featuring 5 distinct mario styles from the last 30 years. It completely overshadows the newer mainline 2D games. Super Mario U Deluxe for example, is just stale in comparison and I got bored very quickly.

There are multiplayer modes which unfortunetely as per usual Nintendo service, laggy as heck. And i've avoided playing them.

The new addition of the world creator is a much wanted feature Nintendo were kind enough to give to us in recent months.

Would be a 10/10 but 9/10 due to laggy multiplayer.

Much of this can't be helped; no game made better use of the Wii U GamePad than the first SMM when it comes to designing and building courses. Using a controller in TV mode works well enough, and there's also the touchscreen in handheld if you're so inclined, but I just wish I could make courses with a mouse and keyboard.

The built-in challenge levels are superb. The World Builder is a welcome addition. The new modes are great. All that said, I really miss the many extra characters we got with the Wii U game, like Mario-Kun and Weird Mario.

User-created courses are very hit and miss, and mostly miss. You can avoid the all-time top 20, as they are all just identical automatic courses that make loud noises. It's best to find a few active course designers you like and follow them, or at least someone who *was* active a few years ago and made a ton of courses.

Regardless, you'll never run out of fun new courses to play! (At least until Nintendo ends online services at some point in the future.)

I think that this game is very creative and great as a first game for kids! It does have some problems, like the 32 level upload cap, but it’s got basically infinite content (endless mode), so it’s perfect for long road trips. Definitely a good purchase for someone of any skill level as it covers a wide scope.

This is a really good game. It has so much play value in it. The story is nothing special, the online games are often laggy, but Joycon Drift is not very prevalent! The worst part is playing on a tv. This game is only playable (for making stages) on handheld. Playing is bedt on handheld, and fine elsewhere. I do suggest buying the game if you have a switch! I have at least 500 hours playing it

I have about 300 hours into this game, it is my most played game on my switch. It's really fun to make levels and play them... too unless you do endless, which is fun but give you less 'good' levels sometimes. I can be very creative in this game and made about 70 levels and even a super world. Really recommend if you're creative or want an infinite amount of 2d platformer levels!

The game editor works pleasantly as in the first game, what's more, it's been improved. It's easier to create levels, and lots of elements that weren't before have been added. But the most important thing is that new graphics inspired in Super Mario 3D world are available to create and play with, which are really delightful and ideal for a new super mario 2D game.
The way yo can play levels created by the community works in the same way as in the first Mario maker. In addition, it's quite simple use filters in order to find what you're looking for, so you won't get lost. The only issue i find is that the browser is old fashioned. To look for a specific level it's necessary to introduce its ID. I reckon that we should be able to introduce the name of the levels we're searching for.
One of the new things that caught my eye was the story mode. It's a great idea for those players who don't have an online subscription and for those who just like to exploit the whole game and enjoy the experience all the gamemodes bring. Moreover, Nintendo one more time has demonstrated that is the best company creating levels; all of them have top quality.
The main problem this game has is its online mode, which is really disappointing. I don't understand why this service works so well in games like Splatoon 2 or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and works so bad in this one. Both competitive and cooperative modes are literally unplayable due to the lag. It's a pity that a gamemode with such a big potential are not able to play in proper conditions.

Also, the online multiplayer option is mostly a slow mess without proper servers which makes the whole experience kind of a let down. Story mode is a good introduction to various interesting mechanics and ideas (however short it may be) and serves as an interactive part of the new tutorials added to this game. Detailing how to increase fun and remove frustration for a potential player, these new tutorials help less experienced players focus on making quality levels. This focus on promoting good level design to new players coupled with the ability to 'boo' a level means most levels you come across are enjoyable as opposed to the mixed bag you'd often find in the first game.

Unfortunately the online is subpar and the transition from Wii U to Switch has been to the controls of Mario Maker 2's detriment - touch screen is practically required and even then it doesn't match the experience of the dual-screen gamepad and TV play the Wii U allowed.

    - The main menu interface I feel is not over intuitive. Why my maker profile and my costume selections in completely different areas of the game? Me checking and customizing my profile should be in one spot.
    - I cannot search levels using words like "Bowser" and getting Bowser named levels as a filter option
    - I cannot copy and re-upload my levels if I want to make a change. Have to delete and re-upload the same level with a change instead of having two levels uploaded, really don't like that.
-No 100 lives challenge. Having endless mode you don't get a finale and your progress seems empty.
I had fun playing the game but my passion faded as I feel 90% of user levels were... less desirable, but that has little to do with the game itself.
I recommend buying, playing and learning some mechanics. This game at least upskills you in gaming in general

Impressive what can be done with a pair of pipes and some goombas. It may take a few hours to build a decent level, but the result and the simplicity to create them is the best of the game. Of course if you are like me, more than playing the levels that the community has created than creating them, you will have a more challenging classic super mario with infinity of levels. Essential.

While this is better than SMM1 because of its improved content, you have to pay to play other people's levels, which I cannot ignore whatsoever! Money is not always the key to success Nintendo! 8/10

A big improvement to the original game, adding fun things like a story-like mode. That story mode however, could have had more improvements. Aside from that, the editor, level hub, and challenges bring a new experience to the table.

I swear the only reason I didn't play it at first was because I lacked the inspiration to create new levels. Back on the Wii U, players weren't allowed to simply have all the building items in arms reach. Players had to wait nine real life days in order to unlock these items. So if you wanted to build the level of your dreams, you would have to play a game of back and forth with the date and time settings. But now, ultimate power is now at your fingertips! Though I personally prefer not to use the touch screen on my Switch.

I'd say the best addition of this game is the world map maker, currently it's only limited to having Super Mario World theming. But the fact that I have the ability to place alive icons, alternate routes, toad houses to go with my stages it takes me back to the days of my childhood, drawing my own Mario levels for fun. Their's even a solo mode if you want to search for inspiration and challenge Nintendo staff levels. Life is good!

One of the most important elements of video game design is freedom. The more options you give your players, the more enjoyable the game becomes. So this sequel is a big step in the right direction. However I will say the best way to enjoy this game, is to have other people try out your levels. Whether they be local or online, the true joy that comes from creating levels is seeing the people enjoy themselves while playing them.

However, there is more to it than making your levels, there's also a campaign that allows you to play levels created by Nintendo to rebuild Princess Peaches castle. This allows you to unlock more items for you to mess around with within the main maker part of the game. Another thing is the vast amount of levels to play in the maker world. You can upload your levels for the world to see, or play others made by other people. And, with the version 3 update, you can make your worlds, which is like making your own Mario GAME. This is got to be Mario Maker 2 biggest part. Now let's talk about the main issues with this game. The Multiplayer sucks. It is so laggy and is unplayable at times. You could have made the multiplayer single player and it would still be laggy. That's how bad it is. Plus, once you have done with the campaign. If you don't often play other peoples world, it gets kind of dull, that's the main reason why I don't play the game often. Now, Super Mario Maker 2 fills in that hole and follows up one of the greatest and most memorable games from the Wii U. One of the great things about the Super Maker games is that they feel almost like Little Big Planet, giving players the range to do whatever they want and share with the world but with Mario. SMM2 adds new items, mechanics, online multiplayer, a brand-new story mode with levels made by Nintendo themselves. Although the Story Mode is nothing remarkable or memorable, the levels by Nintendo are very interesting and teach players about the many items and mechanics that will be sure to give creators ideas when making their own levels. Speaking of level creating, the whole level creation system just feels like a downgrade from the Wii U game. Yes, I realize that the Wii U had a gamepad with a stylus and also acted as a second screen, but Level design in Mario Maker 2 feels clunky and unorganized with the analog stick or touchpad with a finger. A level that could be made in 30 minutes in the original game could take an hour or two in this game. Also, this game loses all Amiibo functionality so the cool character costumes from the first game are completely gone. The addition of Link as a character in the game opens up to more creative level designs, but it doesn't fill the void of losing all the costumes in what was a pointless removal. The next gripe about the game I have to bring up is Online Multiplayer. The Multiplayer is unstable and can be borderline unplayable at times. I've always dreamed of playing Online Multiplayer with people, but it seems as I will have to keep dreaming as the unbearable lag in some games keeps me from playing it. Playing with friends online is much more stable and a better experience, but it doesn't fix that overall the Online is just unplayable at times. Although the game isn't as great as the first title, it does bring some of the spirit back and playing levels by the community can make a good time. Expand

The answer is unfortunately No! Mario Maker 2 adds, admittedly rather acceptable functionalities, but adds problems where there were none. Indeed, a wobbly story mode, an online game still not mastered for Big N, missing easter eggs, playability without a free stylus. Too bad, Mario Maker 2 had completed some details of the 1.

There is however too difficult to find actually interesting levels to play - there are way too many gimmicky levels shared by people, in my opinion, so you need to trawl through a lot of mundane stuff to find the odd good level. The game is simply better than mario maker 1 in every way, and its portable!

Now to the issues I currently have the game... (keeping it from being a 9 or even a rare 10/10 for me.)

The main problem currently with the game is that there is NO online lobby play, and it requires you to pay for nintendo's online service to play online. It is embarrassing and unnecessary for nintendo to continue to disappoint gamers with its shoddy online. This makes playing with friends online impossible, unless you match randomly with them.

The online play's main features are it's Versus and Coop mode, both of which are ruined by terrible unending lag. Even if YOU have perfect ethernet connection, if one player does not, it ruins it for all four players. The reason it does not run smooth is due to Nintendo having NO DEDICATED SERVERS, or very minimal at best.

The game has a 32 level cap (uploads that is, offline levels can be preserved) that cannot be surpassed; for many players this is no matter, but for some very avid level creators this can be a very problematic situation.

There are certain problems that can never be fixed, of course the levels you randomly come across will more than likely be very annoying to play, or even just total garbage. Sometimes, you'll find a hidden gem among the random heaps of levels, but most of the time you'll find a bad level.

Another problem that is related to the last part is that you can no longer download people's levels. If you make a level designed to irritate people, such as hidden blocks and easy hidden paths, nobody but you will know unless they randomly come across it, and coupled with the new Win Conditions mechanic, this can lead to levels having a 0% clear rate due to one hidden block.

The online multiplayer even ignores the tags they themselves designated! for example, you can set your level up for multiplayer versus, and put the specified tag for it, but the actual versus mode chooses levels randomly anyways!

I would love to give this game a very high rating. I really would! Ive loved nintendo games for many years; but i must be fair in my reviews and not base them from nostalgia or love for a company. ALL nintendo has to do to fix this game is fix a small list of things

    1. Add Online Lobby play, let us play online with our friends nintendo, We are already PAYING FOR IT NOW.
    2. make the servers dedicated, this cuts the lag and only makes the person with the shoddy internet suffer, not everyone else.
    3. change just a few more minor things, like being unable to download levels, the level cap removed or increased for creators, and thats it.

If the first 2 of these 3 things are added, fixing the online, i will re review the game, and likely give it a much more positive review, but until then i must say it has gotten stale and is very similar to the previous game. Have fun paying 60 dollars for a new game, 20 dollars for the online, only to be wildly disappointed by the near complete lack of online support.

i do love the new powerups though.

There are a number of poor decisions made. First, no one will ever see your level unless you get someone to play it or someone chances upon it in the new courses list. This is a list of several dozen of the newest courses. Refresh after a few seconds and you get an entirely new list, because people are uploading courses at break neck speed. And this list is the only place anyone can discover your level. It does not enter the regular level pool until someone finds it here, plays it, and upvotes it. Unbelievable - other people playing your levels is the whole point!

The netcode makes the multiplayer unplayable. I have no idea why they did it the way they did, but (and keep in mind you are paying for this service) it's peer to peer and for some reason they decided not to go with rollback netcode or anything that would provide a smooth experience for any given player. Instead you get obscene slowdown, I've seen as bad as one frame a second. This feature may as well not be in the game.

They have a hard upload limit of 32 levels. In the first game this started at 10 and increased to 100 if you uploaded courses that people enjoyed. This encourages good levels, because if you're stuck at the 10 cap and no one is liking your levels, you're encouraged to replace them, and people who make good levels get to upload more. They simultaneously gave trolls and bad designers 3 times the space while cutting the limit for good makers to a fraction of what it was. Why? Who knows.

The story mode is fun, and mostly a showcase of neat stuff you can do with the level maker, except for the mechanics they included that cannot be used there. Why? Who knows. These include a stone item that makes Mario heavy. Coupled with a clear condition requiring it be brought to the end, it made for some neat levels in the story - but you won't be able to experiment with it. There's also an escort mechanic with toads that you cannot use in the maker. Isn't that the whole point?!

You can no longer open other people's courses in the level editor. Want to see if a troll has hidden a door? Too bad. Want to practice a tough section on a kaizo level? You're out of luck. Why did they change this? Who knows.

The new stuff they added is fun and people have been making so much creative stuff. But there could be plenty of creative levels out there that zero people will ever play because of the way this game handles discoverability. The decisions they've made with this game are basically incomprehensible. Nintendo needs to hire someone to tell them when they're making bad decisions, because clearly no one there has the job already. They are heavily dragging down what should be a fantastic experience.

Probably my biggest disappointment on Switch to date. Somehow worse than New Super Mario 2 on DS. It just feels old and dull.

This is the most overrated game on the Switch. The stock levels are boring as hell and the user created levels are either set up like domino runs where you do nothing / go as fast as possible / die til you give up. Not my idea of fun. I loved MM1, but this game is awful - why? Because of the Boos. My kid felt so down when she she realized her levels were buried because of boos. MM1 was so much better for the young kiddos. They turned MM into a streamers day job.

I was quite disappointed with Super Mario Maker 2. it's often cited that you can play "Unlimited Mario levels" with this game, but most of the levels aren't worth playing. I prefer traditional style Mario games, and it's difficult to find the levels that I like to play since most of the highest ranked levels are flashy "auto runner" levels. Maybe i got into MM 2 too late to truly enjoy it the way people enjoyed it at launch. Expand

Ok, sure. The editor is very powerful and you are unlimited with what can you create. You can create the craziest Super Mario Bros. scrolling airship you can possibly imagine, you can add power-ups, checkpoints and stuff... though, it still has its flaws - maximum of one checkpoint per sub-world, only two sub-worlds per level, limited level lengh...

You can play levels made by others!

You can play levels made by others! Cool! The problem is that 90% of the levels (especially in Endless Challenge) are garbage and pure unplayable from start to the very flagpole. Popular level tab is completely flooded with some... "refreshing" levels which are all the same (and they all suck), plus they can be potentially dangerous for players with epilepsy. All other levels are some crap minigame levels and the rest is blue platform challenges, all the same. Other nice levels do not get a chance to get played.

Story mode levels are the only decent levels in the game.

So just to finish this off, the game is very promising, but very disappointing. A great game ruined by players and small children.

If you want to play Mario levels made by friends and family then you will most likely enjoy this game, however there is a staggering amount of things wrong that can't go unstated. Super Mario Maker 2 is a game so outdated that it feels odd seeing something so under featured in this decade.

If you want to play Mario levels made by friends and family then you will most likely enjoy this game, however there is a staggering amount of things wrong that can't go unstated. Super Mario Maker 2 is a game so outdated that it feels odd seeing something so under featured in this decade.

Finding and Playing courses: Super Mario Maker 2 lacks the ability to search for courses and users based on name, and instead uses an archaic course id method. All the recommended courses are either based on mass popularity, or how new they are. Hot courses work okay as an in-between.

Endless mode: Endless challenge is a survival mode base solely off of difficult and not popularity. This means on the harder difficulty you will be bombarded with troll levels and dev exits galore. Nothing beats the experience of being one level away from your top score with 3 lives left. Then the next 3 levels you play kill you in the first second and you lose. There are no mechanics to prevent invisible thwomps directly above spawn.

Multiplayer: 1. No multiplayer with friends online. I don't care if it comes late, its not here now. 2. There is a tag you can add to your stage that specifies multiplayer. From what I've seen, that doesn't matter in multiplayer mode. The majority of stages I've gotten in vs mode don't have the multiplayer tag. This means you will probably be playing stages meant for 1 player with 3 other people crowding the screen. It goes without saying but the lag is terrible, as to be expected with nintendo switch online.

Vs Mode: This one might seem nit picky but it is definitely worth bring up. To win in vs the only thing that matters is finishing first. If you get to the flags poll after 1 second the match ends. Anyone that didn't get first gets counted as losing. I have a potential fix for this. When the first player finishes a 30 second timer starts. Whoever gets 2nd place wins but gains less Elo than first. 3rd stays nuetral and 4th loses. Anyone who doesn't finish in the 30 seconds also loses. This rewards players for playing consistently well instead of the all or nothing system it has now.

Level design: Playing this game you will most likely encounter droves of cheap troll levels. This isn't Mario Maker's fault. What is Mario Maker's fault is how it handles checkpoints. When submitting a level online you need to beat it without checkpoints. The intention is for people to be so proficient that they can beat their level without them. The reality is that no-one uses checkpoints because "If I have to beat it without checkpoints why should they get them."

Missing content: First thing is amiibo. Every amigo costume has been cut from this game, removing potential theming and also acting as a middle finger to anyone who bought them for Mario Maker 1. An even bigger let down is a lack of level sets, or world maps. If you look at any Mario rom hacks most of them are a world or continuous levels. The ability to make a full game instead of separated, unrelated levels is something rom hackers have been doing for over a decade.

Short list of other missing content: Dolphins, urchins, charging chucks, Thunder Chuck winged platforms, Timed platforms, Frog suit, Hammer suit (not the maker one), Penguin suit, Squirrel suit, double cherry, Mountain theme, Koopalings, Mini mushroom, Boomerangs, Blue koopa, disco shells, Fuzzies, Spike, Tethered platforms, and permeable slopes are just a few of the missing features. I don't think its much to ask for nintendo to do with Mario what fans have been doing with rom hacks for years.

There are other major problems with this game like how it requires Nintendo Switch Online to play ANY online courses, and the clunky controls of making courses in docked mode. This game isn't good. It's carried by its community. If rom hacks were more accessible then this wouldn't exist. the biggest praise I can give this game is that many levels are better than the official Mario games. At the end of the day though, the most impressive thing about Mario Maker 2 is how under featured and out of date it is.

Nintendo will surely need to work on new artistic and mechanical styles to make its future 2D Mario games attractive, as Super Mario Maker 2 takes all the best from Super Mario Maker 1 and boosts the game with new options, a better interface, more customization, themes, night mode, interesting enemies and wraps the whole package with a fun new story mode and an online mode that even with its flaws, is competent.Super Mario Maker 2 offers the ultimate experience for Mario 2D fans and certainly yields much more fun than the 60$ what it is charged for.

Another masterpiece by Nintendo. Super Mario Maker 2 is a delight for every creative soul out there - and yet also cares about players with no interest in designing their own levels. There are dozens of hours of pure fun for both of those groups.
