Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 arrives to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. Both games add notable features, including an assisted mode that makes play more accessible, improved Joy-Con support, a wonderful soundtrack with over 100 musical tracks, and even new chapters that expand both main stories. Even so, tighter attention to small details, less finicky camera shifts, or a more active co-op mode would have truly completed the experience.

Both parts of Super Mario Galaxy are still phenomenal 3D platformers, worth playing even today. The problem is that the anniversary compilation looks like it was put together in a hurry, and its price is more off-putting than appealing.

The Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 collection brings two all-time great Mario adventures to the Switch 2, offering their best visual presentation yet, with a crisp 4K docked resolution. While the package is a great value, the port is severely compromised by Nintendo's choice to retain the original Wii-era motion controls—clumsily mapped to gyro and touchscreen—instead of fully remapping them to buttons. This results in frustrating and unintuitive gameplay in handheld mode. Despite these "shackles from a previous generation," the sheer quality and inventive design of the two core games shine through, making it a recommended, though imperfect, way to experience these masterpieces.

Both Mario Galaxy are the best of the best, and of course you have to play it; better on Nintendo Switch 2. But I feel a little disappointed for the lack of new extra content to show how these games were created; to do something more as a celebration of the 40th years of Mario Bros's games, and not only like a simple remaster. Galaxy and Galaxy 2 push the platform-game genre to the outer limits of possibility, and then past them. They redefine our relationship with video game space over and over again, in a spirit that is both joyful and wicked. These impeccable, no-nonsense remasters bring them back in precisely all their glory: no more, as if that were possible, and certainly no less. You can’t put a price tag on that.

It’s great to have a pair of the most inventive platformers ever made easily accessible in 2025. At the same time, these releases are disappointing in just how simple they are. Nintendo has an enviable amount of history and talent, and re-releases like this would be the ideal place to share that with the world. Alas, we get straightforward ports instead.
