Oct 5, 2020The original Super Mario Bros. is a game that has been there for me since childhood. It's always been a nostalgic security blanket, the video game equivalent of comfort food. It's nice and familiar, but not especially challenging or exciting. Super Mario Bros. 35 took this classic and truly gave it new life. I feel excited, tense and downright giddy about this game for the first time since I was a child.
-
Oct 6, 2020Super Mario Bros. 35 takes the original classic and adapts it to a 35-player battle royale-style of game and it's no exaggeration to say that this is one fine work when it comes to adapting a 2D platformer to a competitive feast. It's no less true that veterans will be given an advantage by the game's mechanics but newcomers will also be able to get acquainted with the levels and their secrets before they jump into the action. A classic reinvented as a competitive 35-player experience that keeps intact the exquisite gameplay elements of the original is something worth getting into.
-
Oct 5, 2020Wisely blending the exuberance of battle royale with the dictates of the most famous platformer on the face of the earth, the title shows off the potential typical of memorable experiences, which from ideal "hit and run" pastimes are soon transformed into real videogame magnets, which the closer you get, the harder it becomes to break away.
-
Oct 1, 2020Super Mario Bros. 35 is not your typical BR game where balance changes come left and right, forcing you to adapt to new metas every few weeks. It’s the kind of game where even if you come to it late or take breaks from it, you aren’t going to be painfully behind the pack. You can pick this up either as a 2D Mario veteran or noob and have fun with it. Unfortunately, this game will only be playable until March 31, 2021, and I hope that isn’t the case.
-
Ninty Fresh MagazineDec 21, 2020Like Tetris 99, Super Mario Bros. 35 is deviously addictive. It’s a clever revision of a classic, although more content may be required to sustain long-term interest. [Issue #2, p.77]
-
CD-ActionDec 18, 2020For the first time since forever, I feel like playing Super Mario Bros. again. The team at Arika added 34 other players, increased the number of mobs accordingly, made the player character a bit more powerful – and thus managed to turn rusty gameplay into gold. [12/2020, p.39]
-
Oct 22, 2020Super Mario Battle Royale, as simple as that. It's free and highly addictive but pay attention... you'll need nerves of steel to prevail.
-
Oct 5, 2020Slick mechanics, smooth controls, and faithfulness to the source material make Mario 35 another successful battle royale hybrid from Akira. Nintendo demonstrates yet again their willingness to experiment with sacred IP, and the result is something we’ve never seen before.
-
Oct 4, 2020A nice way to celebrate an all-time classic, Super Mario Bros. 35 successfully implements some kind of battle royale using a very familiar gameplay.
-
Oct 2, 2020Super Mario 35 is an absolute pleasure, taking the usual Nintendo nostalgia and offering a different way to experience it. I couldn't have pictured anything like a classic Mario game working in a competitive battle royale environment, but Nintendo has made it happen and it's loads of fun.
-
Oct 2, 2020Super Mario Bros. 35 gives Nintendo's most iconic game a jolt of life and it's massively welcome. Its matches could do with being a little shorter and it's difficult to see whether it's actually going to have changed much a few months down the line, but it says a lot about the quality of the experience that the biggest problem we have with it is that come April 2021 it won't exist anymore.
-
Oct 13, 2020The game is fun and an interesting take on a sempiternal classic, but unfortunately is not deep as we wished.
-
Nintendo Force MagazineApr 28, 2021Do you enjoy World 1-1 in the original Super Mario Bros. so much that you'd want to play it hundreds of times? If so, have I got the game for you! [Issue #49 – November/December 2020, p. 26]
-
Oct 20, 2020A fantastic tribute to the first plumber video game. Amazing how the battle royale touch feels like a glove. A pity that it has an expiration date and has just two game modes.
-
Oct 8, 2020Combining battle royale with classic Mario gameplay, Super Mario Bros. 35 is an interesting and fresh idea that could use some more depth.
-
Oct 3, 2020Super Mario Bros. 35 applies the battle royale mechanic to Super Mario's World, and it works!
-
Oct 1, 2020I'm loving Super Mario Bros. 35 and can't wait for the many inevitable updates that it'll receive in the coming months. The blend of its highly competitive online structure with classic 8-bit gameplay is simply a blast and I hope to see you online, too.
-
Oct 16, 2020The classic Super Mario Bros. is getting refreshed because of this game. Even though the core gameplay remains unchanged, Super Mario Bros. 35 create some new multiplayer strategies. But those strategies doesn't always make you feel happy or enjoyable.
-
Oct 12, 2020I was pleasantly surprised to find a fair amount of replay value and challenge baked into the experience here. Not only do you level up through playing matches, but there are also daily challenges and special game modes that change over time. Still, as much fun as it is to play against other players, there’s only so much this can do to make things feel fresh. You’ll soon be a bit sick of seeing the same levels and wish that there were more Mario titles, or even more classic Nintendo games.
-
Oct 12, 2020Super Mario Bros. 35 is extremely addictive to keep playing over and over, trying to get that top spot no matter how long it takes. Matches can last a good amount of time with the final remaining group of players, so it becomes a strategy match of trying to send threatening enemies to everyone else, hoping they slip up. There are so many creative concepts here and it’s nice to see such wild ideas for the battle royale genre popping up this year that make things silly in the best kind of way. It’s a crying shame this title won’t be around forever, but as a free title for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, it’s a fantastically fun time all the same. Anyone looking for a crazy new challenging way to play the original Super Mario Bros should give Super Mario Bros. 35 a try and jump into the fray.
-
Oct 8, 2020Super Mario Bros. 35 is a flawed game in some ways while offering something new and unique and a whole lot of fun in others.
-
Oct 7, 2020Delivering precisely what is advertised, Super Mario Bros. 35 delivers on familiar 2D platforming with an all-new competitive twist. Playing against 34 other Marios at once is a wonderful type of mayhem, as is facing off against hordes of enemies. However, early course repetition and late-game lulls slightly temper this Mushroom Kingdom celebration of Mario's 35 years.
-
Oct 6, 2020Super Mario Bros. 35 is stressful, strategic, and quite a bit of fun, but its repetitive nature makes it feel a little less super after a while.
-
Oct 6, 2020Hopefully Nintendo has a change of heart like they did with Jump Rope Challenge and updates the game to address some of its shortcomings: because it has even more potential than a temporary flight of fancy.
-
Oct 6, 2020Lifting the Tetris 99 template wholesale, Super Mario Bros. 35 is a fun and accessible spin on the battle royale, but it's one that's hampered by a lack of clarity over its multiplayer mechanics. Its fresh new player base also leads to endless trips through 1-1 and gruelling marathons instead of tense battles to be the last Mario standing.
-
Oct 2, 2020Super Mario Bros. doesn’t suit the battle royale formula as well as Tetris, but this is still a fun novelty that neatly demonstrates the ageless virtues of the original game.
-
Oct 2, 2020The fun of the platform is obviously intact, Mario remains Mario, but we quickly realize that the concept is not without flaws. The levels repeat and going through the classic 1-1 in a loop due to the capricious random selection and the weird progression is a little tense.
-
Oct 31, 2020It still remains fun on some level, because Super Mario Bros. is fun, and battle royale games are fun. But some poorly thought out decisions lead to this hobbled from reaching the potential that a Mario battle royale game might otherwise be able to achieve.
-
Oct 8, 2020Despite everything Super Mario Bros. 35 offers and the fun it provides, it's the lack of security in the investment of time that players make that overshadows the experience. While it's fun on its own, a big part of its appeal is situated in how much fun it is to unlock options and sink more time into it, which will amount to nothing in March - and in that light, this game is difficult to recommend outside of a few brief sessions.

Oct 1, 2020Mario's "battle royale" is too repetitive and rough for long-term play.

Oct 2, 2020Very fun for a free game, but it does suck how it will only be available for a limited time.
