Don't get confused. These games are masterpieces. But as a remaster collection this package is an overpriced dissapointment. Very little improvements. And for some reason Super Mario Galaxy 2 is not included.

The games themselves are good. SM64 is extremely outdated, Sunshine's controls feel pretty awkward and Galaxy is a straight up masterpiece.

However, the compilation is very lacking and too expensive. Rare replay is an example of a good compilation.

However, I struggled to justify the AAA price tag so I decided not to get it. It later turns out there was no controller mapping and the games were lazy emulations. There's also reports of several bugs in these games too. There's also the fact that this is a limited run and the textures weren't updated at all. The upscaling was a very lazy job for a AAA price. Activision remade their games for $20 less - and that is Activision. I feel like there's no defending the high price and limited run for this game considering how lazy and unimpressive it is. I later got the game for £30 which I find to be a much more suitable price. However due to the limited run this was pure luck for me and it's going to have it's value artificially inflated in April. I'd advise against buying this unless you can find it cheaper, very dissappointing...

Let's get this out of the way first. All the games in this collection are great. Maybe even masterpieces. And I had a lot of fun with them.

Why aren't Mario Galaxy 2, Mario 3D Land, 3D World and Mario 64 DS in this collection?
    Why is everything so bare-bones?
This collection seems like an absolute cash-grab.

Nintendo should finally give us a way to legally play their backlog and not just drip feed us SNES games again.
Take Microsoft as an example Nintendo. Please. The state of legacy content on Nintendo consoles is just sad.

For these reasons I'll halve my score for these games and give this collection a 4/10 instead of 8/10.

While the games themselves are good and revolutionary for their time, they haven't aged well and I don't think the best idea is to sell them for $ 60 when there are even remasters or even remakes a lot cheaper. And the excuse that it is that expensive because it is a collector's item or because Mario is an iconic franchise is not worth me, since that would add an extra value to itWhile the games themselves are good and revolutionary for their time, they haven't aged well and I don't think the best idea is to sell them for $ 60 when there are even remasters or even remakes a lot cheaper. And the excuse that it is that expensive because it is a collector's item or because Mario is an iconic franchise is not worth me, since that would add an extra value to it superficially, when that value would only have to be calculated with the quality of the video game, replayability and the work of a company. You can buy PS1 games in the PS Store for less than $ 10, just to give an example of what Mario 64 should have come out individually, since many use the excuse of $ 20 per game, when in reality not it's like that. The games are emulated and there is not a single improvement that makes a second purchase worthwhile, if you already have the originals. And if you don't have them, there are better alternatives. I will not support piracy, but it must be recognized that even fans with the PC port (almost without money) or other companies with their respective ports or remakes have done more remarkable work, and Nintendo does not offer a more attractive alternative to this, improving The titles. Not because you like Mario does it mean you can't recognize this. I would also have suggested putting the Mario Galaxy 2, or putting the DS version of Mario 64 in its place, since as I said, Mario 64 of the 3 is the one that has aged the worst, it would not hurt to fix the outdated camera.
Some people said that its not a remake, and thats true, but it would be could if Nintendo does what Medievil remake did. The remake itself + the original game. If they had done this instead of the other, of course i will pay $ 60 without problems!
In short, everyone is free to spend money on whatever they want. Let everyone pay for what they want without being guided by the opinions of others, but at least recognize that it is a very improvable product and that it does not do justice to Mario's anniversary.

Sure, that's something that's been done before, and since. But the emulators themselves are buggy as well. There's a lot of popping of models. There's graphics glitches. There's a lack of widescreen support. What the world was expecting was to see the games remade with better graphics, like the original Super Mario All-Stars. What the world received was one of the laziest compilation jobs out there. At the very least, the collection did include some side content, mostly in a music player. But that doesn't redeem that the games themselves, already limited to three with several other titles that people were looking for absent, were presented this badly. Expand

But they just had to screw up the motion controls, it constantly goes off sync as I'm playing and it's so distracting (maybe it's just me, but it really does love to go off sync sometimes). Playing Mario Galaxy on 3D All-Stars with a Pro Controller felt kind of "off" to me. I even tried using joycons instead but even using those is a bit off for me too. Especially since joycons can easily break, but the good thing is I can just go get them repaired if that were to happen. This is also the collection that introduced me to Super Mario Sunshine, and man were the controls just really weird in general. Then there was Super Mario 64, I feel a bit mixed with 64. I played the original on the Nintendo 64, and it felt good to play with an N64 controller. But just like with Galaxy and Sunshine, playing this cult classic with a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller also felt a little off. I do wish they gave the option to bind the controls to different buttons to make it easier to play these games. They could've also updated the graphics of the games, included Galaxy 2. This collection could've been so much better. But it has a few problems that ruins the experience for me.

The amount of work put into these ports is almost non-existent. At least they changed Sunshine to 16:9 but why not Mario 64? It looks ridiculous with it's huge black frame. And the camera controls of 64 are really weird because it's meant for the C-buttons on the N64 controller, not for an analogue stick. They could've at least changed that. The only good thing are the very short loading times.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Mario 3D all - stars game is a bit of a disappointment. I downloaded it recent on my switch and booted up the game. I loaded into Super Mario 64 and immediately noticed the game didn’t fit the switch’s screen. The camera controls are a bit wacky, and whenever you collect a star or die, all of the red coins reset and you are booted out of the painting. Then I tried Super Mario Sunshine. I collected Fludd, and got to cleaning up the graffiti, I somehow could not fighter out how to beat the boss of the level, and the controls are super different to the original game. Then, reluctantly I booted up Super Mari Galaxy, and found the controls were wacky and you can’t skip cutscenes in ANY of the games. My favourite out of the 3 would be Super Mario 64. I give this game a 4/10, and don’t recommend buying it unless you have the money to spare. My advice: read reviews before you buy the game. Expand

I will say the smaller updates to the games are so dumb, Mario 64 got sightly better graphics, Sunshine got a wider screen, which makes no sense, and can't the others do the same, and I forgot about Galaxy. I don't understand why Nintendo just didn't give this the same treatment as they gave Ocarina of Time & Majoras Mask on the 3DS all those years ago. To further put my personal disgust with how Nintendo released all-stars 3D, they fixed backwards long jumping on mario 64. This is a glitch that speed runners use to run world-record speed runs, they had the nerve to patch this out of the game which leaves the game as a downgraded version of Mario 64 DS, with 50% less content. Nintendo could have done more by doing less. Leaving backwards long jumping in the game wouldn't effect normal players, all it does is generate more anti-consumer product. I don't even use backwards long jump, but the fact that they removed that and left more important problems in the game just feels like they half-assed this release. Now, I'm not saying you wont have fun playing these games, because you definitely will because they are the best in their own genre. Nintendo could have done a hell of a lot more for 80 CAD. Expand

I really dislike Super Mario 64, though. I will not go into the reasons why, however. What is more important is that this would be a good game, if it was not extremely lazy and overpriced. The resolution upscale is barebones and lacks substance, despite it being the only gimmick of this collection aside from its default Switch features and the soundtracks. The soundtracks do not add anything good to the collection, since all it does is play music from the three games in the background of the game's menu, and there is almost nothing to do in the game's menu, so its existence is only further devalued by Nintendo's laziness.
They are emulated games with no significant changes. All there is to it is the previously mentioned upscaled resolution, probably a better framerate, music tracks, and the default Switch features. The controls are also not that good in Sunshine and Galaxy, but I will not go into why. I will say that SM64 for the first time can be played with a good controller, though, without being on an emulator, which is good. The games controls and camera are still miserably terrible, unfortunately.
This would all be fine, if there was a proper price to go along with it. But it is sixty USD, and that is way above what it deserves to be. It is obvious Nintendo put almost no real effort into developing this game, yet they are still fine with charging it on full price for the sake of satisfying their hunger for money. Nintendo is far from the most greedy and lazy company out there, but from time to time they still stab their fans in the backs like this. I would also like to mention that for some reason I bought this game with a 10% lower price than I pay with all other full priced games. I live in Denmark, so I paid four-hundred-and-fifty danske kroner, even though it is supposed to be just as highly priced as all other major Nintendo Switch games. It is quite strange.
I believe that fifteen or twenty USD would have been a fair price. Fifteen should have been the minimum, every game and soundtrack in the collection would make up five USD, which is a really good price considering their essentially just emulations that cost almost no money to produce. I would have been fine with it costing an extra five USD. Anything about twenty USD is ridiculous for this game, and that is why I regret buying this game.

Speaking of the Switch, you do know that Nintendo came out with the greatest Mario game ever with Odyssey, so just go and play or re-play that beautiful masterpiece. Playing anything other than Odyssey is just a waste of time. If you still like these old Mario games you're living in the past man..time for Odyssey so you can experience what 10 years of development time can do to a series. Expand

Altogether incredibly underwhelming for what was supposed to be a big game celebrating Mario's history on 3D platforms. Not only is the collection inexplicably highly time-limited, it's missing a game (that being Super Mario Galaxy 2), and it's painfully obvious across the entire collection that Nintendo only put in the bare minimum amount of effort.

Super Mario 64 being based on the bugfixed Shindo version released exclusively in Japan is not necessarily a bad thing, even if it does remove some of the game's most iconic glitches and exploits, but unlike Sunshine it's inexplicably still in 4:3 instead of 16:9 and features no meaningful adaptations or additions otherwise.

Super Mario Galaxy meanwhile is fairly inoffensive for the most part except for the part where the game is literally unplayable on two of the three possible control schemes due to Nintendo's exceptionally poor handling of the matter of the cursor. Using the touch screen for the cursor during gameplay is massively impractical and aiming it with gyro on Pro controller is incredibly awkward. Playing with Joycons feels more or less identical to playing the game as it was on the Wii, but of course comes with the caveat of drift.

But the real reason for the massively critical score of TWO is Sunshine. Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy weren't handled well, but at least they aren't actively worse than their original versions.

For those who don't know, in the original version on the GameCube, Sunshine had an interesting, obscure feature colloquially dubbed the 'shotgun spray' or 'spam spray'; by quickly and briefly pressing the R button fully and releasing, Mario would fire out a wide blast of water, which was excellent for clearing large areas of goop, dealing with certain problematic enemies (anyone who's played Sunshine likely has a good idea of what enemies I mean), and in general for just putting out a lot of water at once. This was an intended feature.

This feature is absent in 3D All-Stars.

The reason for this is pretty obvious; unlike the GameCube controller and literally every other modern console, the Switch does not feature analogue triggers, and as such this aspect of FLUDD's functionality would not be workable in its original capacity on Switch. Of course, the obvious flaw with this is the fact that every single Switch-compatible controller, with only two exceptions, has additional buttons that this functionality could easily have been assigned to instead. Or it could've been implemented as a combination of both spray buttons. Or it could've been implemented any number of other ways, likely very easily. But they didn't do anything like that. They just removed it.

It's unbelievably obvious that Nintendo put the absolute bare minimum amount of effort into these ports- which are EMULATED, by the way, they're not even actual ports- if not less, and in doing so have actively taken away from one of the involved games. These are all widely-loved games that did not deserve this kind of treatment.

I absolutely adore Galaxy, but if I could refund this game, I would. But, of course, it's Nintendo. No refunds for anyone.

They could’ve made Mario not look blocky as well, but that might’ve actually been not done due to preservation. They didn’t even release the version most people speed run, so if you wanted to get into speed running Super Mario 64 you’d need to purchase an entire Nintendo 64 or just emulate the game on a computer. You can’t map buttons on the remote despite that making quite a bit of sense given the controls aren’t the best and, people have their own preferences. This game is just so much lost potential and the fact that Nintendo think they can release it at full price, when in comparison to other collections. It's marketed as one of the celebratory products of the Mario brand. This being the case, it fails to show any ounce of passion & care, of which the originals held. The only thing Nintendo has newly offered is a novelty soundtrack which can only be used while the game is inserted; literally having no use or practicality for the average consumer.

The quality of this game is horrendous. It makes the Nintendo deal look like garbage with how the original of SM64 and SMS feel awkward. On top of that, SM64 bears the worst in how it's presented. With all this porting and emulation nonsense going on it feels crappy even purchasing it for being so unpolished.

This while thing is daylight robbery and Nintendo made minor enhancements such as remade textures; purely to keep the visuals with the times... Additionally, if individual developers can do better than Nintendo them it's safe to say that they didn't care so that much in the first place. There's more than one reason why Nintendo had so many pirates. That's because though they may succeed the competition in some, they fail their consumers in the rest.

Blindly praising the company without acknowledging the stunts they pull is ludicrous. Moreso, the purchase time-frame is a disgusting move on Nintendo's.

this is actually the worst port I've played...don't buy it, you should play on emulator.

The collection was done very lazily. Not even ports, but emulations, packaged and sold for $60, when it's barely worth half that. honestly, **** you Nintendo, don't get me wrong, these are great games, and are worth your time. BUT, does a 60 dollar collection of 13+ year old games with no extra content and nothing else in it that I cant get from emulation seem worth the SIXTY DOLLARS you are going to be paying for it.

Oh, and I guess mario galaxy 2 or 3D land don't exist either!

If you really want to play these games just use an emulator. project 64 can play mario 64 and the dolphin emulator can play sunshine and galaxy 1 and 2! for free.
you can even get widescreen, a 60fps patch and up the resolutions.

"BuT YoU CAn pLAY iT ON tHE gO!!!"
yeah what about the homebrew hacks that you can get up and running on your switch hardware, or the PC port that, with the right tools, can be played on the switch with hd models and textures,

    oh right,
    Nintendo nuked it!

**** you if you think this "anniversary celebration collection" is worth sixty dollars, a full priced game.

**** you, **** Nintendo and **** whatever the hell this **** is.

Una porquería, lucran con la nostalgia pero haciendo el mínimo esfuerzo por traer algo decente Nintendo está en decadencia hace mucho pero jamas pensé que podría reírse de esta manera de los fans

This simply does not do the games justice. This game is by no means worth the 60 dollar price tag and the limited release makes it even worse.

OK, thanks for nothing Nintendo. Actually the Super Mario Galaxy is UNPLAYABLE with Switch controllers. It was even hard to "Select File" at the beginning of the game. This "package" should be sold for around 5 bucks instead of a full game price. Shame on you!

Absolute trash. Updated resolution. And nothing else. Quick cash grab and i feel like a fool for falling for it. They couldn't even update the godforsaken camera system. Go download the roms and an emulator. Don't waste your money on this trash they literally did nothing to these games and playing then on the switch is worse than pc

Nintendo had the chance to knock this one out of the park, but they settled for a bunt. [Issue #49 – November/December 2020, p. 72]

The classic games have been ported over to the Nintendo Switch with upscaled graphics. The old controls feel clunky compared to modern gaming standards, but if you already love these games, this makes for a great purchase.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is three masterpiece games in a lacklustre package thanks to poor upgrades, contrived control choices and barely any extra content. [Issue #2, p. 72]
