Mar 12, 2025I don’t think we need the Suikoden series to “continue” any more than we need someone to go out and write a Water Margin 2. I have no idea if Konami is using this release to gauge interest in a proper “reboot” or new sequel, and being honest, I don’t think we need that. Frankly, I’m not even sure we need the rest of the series to be re-released from here (though I also wouldn’t say no to that). We should just appreciate that Suikoden and Suikoden 2 are remarkable achievements, both as literary adaptations and entertaining video games to play, and that quality and worth has not diluted one bit in the years since. Play these, love them, and then do yourself a favour and go and read Water Margin too.

Mar 5, 2025Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster might not have earth-shattering additions, but the graphical updates and quality of life adjustments that are here make it a joy to return to these fantastic JRPGs. Both games are a delight to play on the Switch. There’s a charm here that I longed for when I played Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, and I’m delighted to think how much joy they’ll bring others. These are fantastic games, and I hope for further preservation efforts for other entries from Konami.

Mar 24, 2025Fans of 90s JRPGs who missed it the first time have no excuse not to give Suikoden II (and its half-decent predecessor) a crack now. Suikoden I & II HD Remaster is not only the most economical way to experience these classic JRPGs, but also the best, thanks to some clever upgrades and, on the Switch and Steam Deck at least, the ability to play it natively on the go.

Mar 11, 2025This new edition of the Suikoden games comes with enough improvements to make it worthy to dive back into their world. While there are some things that still show its age, just for its incredible story, classic gameplay and wonderful soundtrack, this is a must-have game for any RPG fan.

Mar 4, 2025If you’ve never played Suikoden II and consider yourself a lover of Japanese-made RPGs, you should already have this game pre-ordered. This is a game that belongs on the podium near the ‘90s classics from Square Enix. I’m not nearly as hot on Suikoden I, but the first game is more like the NES Final Fantasy entries to Suikoden II’s SNES Final Fantasy entries. It’s cool to see the evolution, but we all know what game has ascended to all-timer status.

Apr 14, 2025Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars represents the best way to experience the first two entries in the series. It maintains their classic retro atmosphere while incorporating quality-of-life improvements, offering an enhanced gameplay experience for veterans and modern players alike. These two installments are essential titles for any fan of the JRPG genre, especially for those who cherish the golden era of the original PlayStation.

Apr 9, 2025There’s definitely a substantive quality gap between both games in this collection, but ultimately, this is a worthy collection to keep on your shelf if you’re fond of original PlayStation RPGs. I’d spent so long wanting the PSP collection to make it west, and it’s great to have that finally with a few extra bells and whistles. I wish there could have been some kind of extra graphics options here to preserve the original pixel aesthetics for the backgrounds, but serious praise needs to be brought to the work the team put into Suikoden II’s remaster. That alone feels worth the cost of admission.

Mar 5, 2025Suikoden 1 and 2 are two more than solid JRPGs, which are a living example of the golden age of the genre, and which receive with this collection their best exponent to date. They are not perfect, and they drag certain rough edges from their original release, but they are two must-haves for any fan of the genre.

Mar 4, 2025While not as feature-rich as some collections, Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars proves that these RPGs have largely stood the test of time. While the issues with this remaster don’t take away too much from the original games' brilliance, we think these classics deserve the very best. Boasting ambition, narrative stakes, and heart that few other RPGs of the time can muster, Suikoden burns bright in its origins, and we hope Konami sees just how important this series is to many and makes a handful of tweaks.

Mar 5, 2025Suikoden I&II HD Remaster is a worthy overhaul for two role-playing classics that everyone should experience. Although the remastering work is not memorable, the new graphics and small playable additions, as well as its translation, are important incentives to enjoy again two cult gems.
-
Mar 28, 2025As much as the games industry doesn’t want to acknowledge it, the existence of those alternative routes is an inevitable consideration, and that’s especially true for Suikoden.
-
Mar 5, 2025Suikoden I - II HD Remaster is a good enough compilation to discover (or re-discover) two of the most influential JRPG of all time, both treated with respect and both still very enjoyable today. The budget Konami allocated for this project was probably minimal, but the effort put in recreating these two classics is commendable nonetheless.

Mar 4, 2025There’s no denying the beauty held within the pixel graphics here. The first game has its charms in visual design, but the second game improves in every department, bringing more detail and a range of colours that make practically every scene look like a work of art. There’s also much more joy in building your army of 108 characters here, purely due to the added depth for each member. It’s hard to overstate just how much better this game is, even many years after its release. If you’re an RPG purist, you’ll get a lot from this remaster package, but don’t expect too much.
