The graphics look incredible, with a unique clean style that adheres closely to the classic designs. You can even make the game look retro with the original sprites if that's your thing. It's cheap, it's fun, you can play it with your friends (well maybe later this year). Go get it! Expand

Turns out it’s pretty much perfect. The animation/posing nullifies any worries about the character design, the music is as good a successor as it could possibly be - but also includes a retro soundtrack as an option. The combat is every bit as crunchy as it ever was, but with meaningful improvements that add depth and fluidity to it. Catching a metal pipe after it rebounds off an enemy before lamping the guy behind you, juggling enemies between players, bouncing them off the walls etc - all in a way that fits with it’s predecessors so well that you can play using those characters with the same controls/animation as ever and they fit perfectly. Packed with unlockables and secrets, meaningfully different experiences depending on the character selection... it’s just excellent. A real love letter to the series.

Extremely well done beat 'em up. Fluid controls, good combo system, great soundtrack and art style. Quite a lot of replayability, as you can try playing on higher difficulties or just try to get a better rank and the gameplay loop is just super fun.

For me it's the best brawler there is on the Switch.

The only reason this game didn't get a 10 from me (even though it's my most played game since it was released) is that the story mode is a bit short. The game has 12 arcade-style levels, and once you beat the game, you are supposed to replay it with the other characters, and with harder difficulty settings. It's still really fun but is best enjoyed in short bursts, or else the playthroughs sort of lose their pinache'. Anyway its a really fun game and I think it's a must own for the Switch.

The game is of great length and is definitely better the more players you are.
I played one save as a single player and struuuuuuggled. But I also played with a friend and it was so much easier. So I would imagine that 4 players would just breeze through the game...

Street of rage

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't be the only one who thinks it's "just OK" but it's far from amazing.

Finished all 12 stages, and now all that's left to do is grind a ridiculous amount just to unlock enough score points to get the rest of the characters.. Which I'm just not gonna bother doing because it's simply just replaying the same story over and over to get more points.

Finished it within about 2-3 hours if that... If you played this game online I'm sure it'd add some replay value but there's not really much to it otherwise..
No Challenge Boards, special ways to unlock characters, bonus levels, alternate costumes etc..
Story is still quite pathetic as usual. I mean, it's what you sort of expect from streets of rage but for a brand new SOR game in the series I honestly expected more content and more variety of special modes and challenges etc..

For a start, the sound levels are far lower than any other Switch game in my collection, to the extent that I have to turn up my sound system about 50% to bring it to an acceptable level.

The sound is particularly lacking in bass... surely the heart and soul of electronic dance music. And the “Retro” soundtrack is even worse... you get the original Mega Drive (Genesis) soundtracks, but again with all of the bass sucked out of them. Compare to a real Mega Drive, an Analogue Mega-SG or even a half decent emulator and you’re going to be extremely disappointed.

It’s all such a shame, given the core gameplay is extremely satisfying, and a great nostalgia trip. The game’s a bit short and grindy though... which is presumably why there was a review embargo until release day.

I really should learn that these modern tributes to old games rarely work out well (Flashback, Shadow of the Beast). Sonic Mania really was an anomaly... I should remember that next time.

The enemies do nothing but run away and finally attack when you’re in end lag. It’s lame cheap programming. Top all that off with enemies spamming projectiles, or moves with armor. There’s no fun to be had just try hard bs. Also your character’s movement speed is the slowest in any video game ever. May as well be added to the Guinness Book of World Records for slowest character movement in a game. To any devs wanting to make a beat-em-up…Do the opposite with your AI than these developers who have no idea what fun is.

The levels are well thought out, with great combinations of enemy waves in creative settings, and most if not all level gimmicks are really enjoyable, even on repeat playthroughs. I've played through the game numerous times, and no matter how much time passes I always find myself coming back. I wouldn't be surprised if I came back again in a month or so to finish playing through with all the characters, that is if I don't end up doing it tomorrow. I think fans of the beat 'em up genre have been starved for content of such a high quality, and I'd recommend it wholeheartedly to action game fans.

Streets of Rage 4 is a worthy continuation of the beloved series that has preserved the atmosphere and drive of its predecessors. The developers managed not only to play on the nostalgia of fans, but also to make a modern game that cannot be accused of being too archaic. The project is undoubtedly a must-buy for fans of the genre and all those who appreciate easy-to-learn, but addictive games.
