Stilstand is an interactive graphic novel that accurately captures the minutiae of despair and loneliness through a darkly funny and absurdist story.

A darkly funny, emotionally engaging and poignant interactive visual novel, Stilstand is a relatable story that’s worth experiencing. With the implementation of touch screen input, the Nintendo Switch version of the game is the definitive console version of a game which I feel most people will see at least a small part of themselves in.

Stilstand is a game that evokes particularly poignant emotions in the time we live in, where the social isolation caused by the global pandemic has highlighted the importance of addressing mental health issues linked to loneliness and depression. With its comic book art style and impeccably written plot, Stilstand's only major sin is to be over so quickly and giving us few reasons to pick it up again once finished, seeing as it does a stellar job at everything.

The feeling of being stuck emotionally and maybe favoring isolation is a common theme that many can relate to given the last 18 months we have all experienced. Tie that in with this slice of life being shared with us, and you have yourself an incredibly well written and truly unique experience. Stilstand is a brief, yet powerful story that is well worth taking the time to check out.

It's boring, the characters are Bleak and the "interaction" with objects is a joke. Nearly everything in the review on this page is a lie which is really a shame. If you get this game for free stare at a wall for an hour. That's a slightly less waste of your life. Full Review »

A beautiful experience, simple and intimist, a storytelling across the normal problems in normal life, but that everbody have!

While usually games are a terrific escape to help you forget your problems, Stilstand instead steers right into the slide to share a vision of someone who is hopefully having a tougher time than you are but can likely sympathize with. Suffering from a mix of anxiety, depression, and what feels like an inherently self-destructive nature, you’ll follow the main character’s struggles through a few different social situations and try desperately to help steer her away from trouble as much as you can. Her periodic discussions with her inner self are often insightful and interesting, but given the pretty brief runtime (likely less than an hour for most people) unfortunately it’s all over right as you’re getting invested in her struggles. Absolutely unique, and for some people possibly quite relatable, it’s an interesting but brief slice of life with someone saddled with real issues.
