SteamWorld Build brings city builder, resource management, and dungeon crawling together for a lovely experience that will see us helping our charming steambot friends reach their new planet. With a simple and accessible approach that welcomes everyone in, the game makes sure we are in the know of what needs to be done, and allows players to advance rather quickly in what is a motivating and rewarding gameplay environment with a charming audiovisual work and a cast of affable and comical characters.

SteamWorld Build is another great entry in this long-running series. This latest outing encouraged me to give simulations another go, taking a series I enjoy and introducing me to a genre I’m not usually fond of. The relaxing style and intuitive gameplay make this an accessible and interesting title for all players.

SteamWorld Build is, like the other games in this series, a very friendly and well-paced game. I think that’s a double-edged blade, as veterans of the genre might find it all a bit too streamlined and deterministic. Still, the game is a really good time while it lasts, and I appreciate all the attempts to mix things up without losing the basic enjoyment this genre offers. The game plays really well on Switch, too. If you’re looking for a fun entry-level builder, you might want to give this a look.

While the Switch version lacks some visual fidelity, the gameplay is every bit as fun as on the other platforms. Steamworld Build is a short, highly approachable city builder with polished mechanics and charming ideas. It might be too simple for expert players, but offers a great entry point for newcomers.

SteamWorld Build offers fantastically moreish gameplay in a sandbox city-builder package, set in the well-loved SteamWorld universe. Fans of the franchise will definitely like this entry, along with newcomers, and anyone who enjoys building up a sprawling city from the ground.

SteamWorld Build is a beautifully crafted game that seamlessly blends genres and ideas into a polished and premium package. There’s not another management sim like it, but despite it running surprisingly well on Nintendo’s system, it does leave us wanting for more reason to return to it. You’re all but guaranteed to adore your first time through, but subsequent playthroughs may not carry the same magic. Still, with all that being said, this is undeniably a triumph of mechanical marvellousness.

I enjoyed SteamWorld Build a lot, but it’s not essential. Perhaps that’s why, 13 years later, This overall property is still searching for that breakout hit that will elevate it from indie charmer to a major property. The elements are all there: the theme, the quality aesthetics, and the maverick ability to move between genres while interpreting them in an accessible and engaging manner. But the developer really needs to figure out how to tell a compelling, deep and purposeful narrative with all these components. It’s the glue that’s missing from making SteamWorld memorable.

Once you make it underground, SteamWorld Build is a delight, but any time spent on the surface is filled with mild frustrations that slowly add up and leave me yearning for the mines. It should come as no surprise, I suppose, that SteamWorld is at its best when you’re digging.
