Splatoon 3 improves on almost every aspect of it's predecessor and delivers the best title in a already wonderful series. The single player campaign "Return of the Mammalians" is a great introduction to Splatoon while also providing the challenge and lore for veteran players like me. The new single player campaign is more cinematic than anything we have ever seen from Splatoon before. And from start to finish it is a fun and enjoyable experience. But that is only the tip of the iceberg of what Splatoon 3 has to offer. Just like it's predecessors the online is the main draw to Splatoon 3. Returning to Splatoon 3 is Turf War and the ranked (now known as anarchy battles) Splat Zones, Tower Control, Rainmaker, and Clam Blitz. And all of these modes are very fun to play and always keep you engaged. But here's where my only issues with the game lies. No new online modes have been added to the game and I have personally experienced more communication issues than with any other Splatoon game before it. However this doesn't take away from how fun the game actually is. And there's even more to the game with the returning Salmon Run and the brand new Table Turf Battle. And there are also way more options to customize your inkling or octoling with brand new hairstyles and many more new clothing options. And also there are more ways to have fun on the battlefield with two new weapon types. So overall Splatoon 3 is a very fun experience which will only get better with time as it receives more and more free content updates. Expand

Splatoon 3 does a great job on expanding on the 2nd game. The story mode offers tons of levels that get quite challenging by the end of the story campaign. If you are a more seasoned veteran of the game, it may be easier for you, but the secret level to 100% the story mode ends up being good for anyone that gets to that point, especially for honing in on movement and combat skills. If you are a more seasoned veteran of the game, it may be easier for you, but the secret level to 100% the story mode ends up being good for anyone that gets to that point, especially for honing in on movement and combat skills. The story itself provides interesting context into the world of Splatoon through the collection of collectables. I'd love to see something that dives into a fuller, more aggressive story. However, I don't play Splatoon for the story.

The combat is as good as ever. I've always loved that this is a faster paced game (regular matches being 3 minutes each). You can definitely carry a team to victory with good flanks and great aim, but this is more fun as a team game where everyone is working their weapons/abilities together to hold down map control.

It can be confusing to get an idea of all the different ability layers at first, but as you learn what each ability does, you'll have a better idea on how to further build out your character. Various powerups via the in game Food/Drink shop can help you boost XP, cash, or a chance at certain item abilities, and the Murch character in game can help you with adding new abilities, or removing abilities.

The in game addition of a lobby to queue up with friends and practice your aim while you wait for a match is a fantastic move. More of a quality of life addition than anything, but I think it was well done.

Ranked gameplay (as far as the setup of it) is well done with the "series" mode. Even if you are losing games initially, you will still get rank points for how well you are playing in each game, which potentially allows you to rank up and play with more team based players. Even so, I love the strategy of the various ranked modes. The Rainmaker one is perhaps the most confusing, and I wish that one could make more sense to me.

My biggest complaint would be less related to the game itself, and moreso on Nintendo servers disconnecting during games, when I have no issues with any other games that I play. It's more rampant than it should be, though I have to say that it "appears" better than other Nintendo online games that I've played (looking at you Smash!). This is something that I think Nintendo should prioritize for the future of their online games, as it can be frustrating for players to get disconnected during matches, especially in a ranked match.

I hope this provides more context into whether you may want to purchase this game. It can be a learning curve to understand certain aspects to it, but the gameplay is fast and fun.

Shoutout to the music as well, some of the best energetic music in a game. I always feel hyped up when the "1 minute" music starts playing each match.

In my opinion, in terms of the online multiplayer everything is generally the same to Splatoon 2 except for some quality of like features like a prelobby. Over all it’s still a solid addition to the Splatoon franchise and worth the $60!

Yes, there may not be TOO much new content, but the content that is currently available is worthy of at least a 9. Also, Nintendo likes to do these updates that add a ton of stuff to the game, so the current version is around 10% of what the game will be in a few years

This game is so much better than the previous one, so many QoL fixes and other changes that make it worth buying. They're going to update the game for 2 years and dlc, so there will be always something to look forward too. Despite some minor bugs and server problems I love how fun and addicting this game is.

My Shooter for 2022. This game is a great pick up for a fun and carefree gameplay. Quick games with great weapon and map variety. The single player is a good way to improve skills with a lite story mixed in. I have been playing since the Wii U and Splatoon 1. See you at the next Splatfest!

The multiplayer (when working) is some of the most fun I've had in an online shooter in a very long time, although it takes some time to get used to gyro controls and game modes. The story mode, which doesn't really have much story, is decent—many exciting and original short levels, with well-designed characters and well-written dialogs.
The only thing that is holding the game back are the multiplayer servers, or lack thereof. Yes, this is a game with paid online experience, and yet the multiplayer gameplay is handled on P2P connection. On a good day, you might get disconnected once every 10 or more games, but sometimes it's hard to get a single match without a network error. I REALLY hope Nintendo brings official servers because I honestly think this might be a 10/10 game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I believe if this game had better multi-player it would be an easy ten out of ten. Sadly though Nintendo's online service is firstly, not free, and secondly, very unreliable. The main storymode is great and you can basically choose which way you want to go through it. If you want to 100% the story mode you can complete every single level. If you just want to casually play it or play for the story you can pick and choose what levels you play. It also serves as a kind of extended tutorial, showing off many different weapons, special weapons, and sub weapons. The turf war mode is great for newer players and if you want to play non-competitively. For people who like more of a challenge there is anarchy mode where you can play to raise your in game rank. There is also Salmon Run, another game mode, similar to Zombies, where you battle off waves of enemies. Then there's the character customization options. There are so many hats, glasses, pants, shirts, hairstyles, shoes, all of which can be changed. Lastly, the community. The community is very kind, accepting, and kidfriendly. Although don't think this game is just for kids. While somewhat small, the competitive scene is briming with talent of all ages from teens to adults. All in all, it's a fun game that's worth the 60 dollar price tag. Expand

Splatoon 3 is a amazing follow-up to Splatoon 2, and you can see it in the tutorial alone. The graphics and controls are a step-up, and the Splatfests are a blast! Customizing your locker and avatar is also a nice way to pass time.

I'm disappointed with the latest update of Splatoon 3. The online connection has not improved significantly. I primarily play the Salmon Run mode, and at this point, I have no interest in purchasing any DLC. The recent updates have not introduced any new and exciting features.

Splatoon 3 is a pretty alright game. It has a good story mode, and the online battles can be fun when they work (and you don't suck at aiming like me.) While the game for the most part is very fun. There are still some problems with the game like Crab Tank, Tenta Missiles, the tetris piece shaped new stages, the disconnects and the terribly scheduled challenges window. These are not enough to make it a bad game, at least in my experience. Also, I love TableTurf Battles.

I in no sense hate this game, and I think anyone can have fun playing it. That being said...this game can get incredibly frustrating for older teens/adults who care about their results, especially in Salmon Run where you have a rank to lose.
This game needs a better matchmaking system, period. I don't play turf and ranked typically (because of the horrible netcode this game has, if you dont have good internet dont even bother) but I am a huge fan of salmon run. I've been at the max rank before, and when your team knows how to play, it's incredibly chaotic and just pure fun. But all that hinges on your team KNOWING how to play. If you get one bad teammate- thats it, you're done... and YOU get punished for it! It is so easy to lose your rank or, if you are lucky, to be carried into a rank higher than what your skill level is at.
Skillful players get knocked down so easily and it.. is literally near impossible to get back up. It's ridiculous. Nintendo needs to make it harder to go up and harder to go down, I've never played a multiplayer game where the ranks just don't matter and you can be paired with anyone. Salmon run becomes, ironically, 10x harder when you factor in players who do not know what they're doing in lower, easier ranks. All the joys of teamwork get utterly sucked away and you're just left with just feeling like you wasted your time because your teammates ran to the shore, stayed there, constantly getting themselves killed and not focusing on the objective... and theres nothing you can do about it. Oh, but that's your fault, clearly you (the person with the best score) must not know how to play... let's dock your pay grade by 5,000 points.
So if you just want to have a good time and play, this game is perfect for that. But if you even get slightly serious about what you're doing, you're just going to be utterly disappointed.

(.... oh yeah and the regular maps for turf and all that aren't good or fun, they're very cramped! Not ideal in a game who's design philosophy ISN'T supposed to be rooted in just getting enough kills, like every other shooter, but rather how much of the ground you can ink. It really feels like they went back on this, and this game is now more than ever filled to the brim with tryhards. It doesn't feel as welcoming and warm as Splatoon 2 did for me)

    Update 9/18/22:
The recent server maintenance and 1.1.1 patch were *supposed* to help address the comms error problem. If anything the issue has only become WORSE since the patch. In one 90 minute session today, I counted 27 generic comms errors: 22 during matchmaking, 5 mid-match. None of this was a problem with my network as discord chat and my wife's TV video streaming worked flawlessly throughout the same time period. Yet twice Nintendo's system blamed MY internet, penalizing me with two 5 minute "time-outs" despite the comm errors being THEIR fault. I only managed to play 6 complete games in the time frame, totaling around 30 minutes. 30 minutes of play vs. 90 minutes of comm errors. I'm not reducing my score (yet) but if they don't get a handle on this I most certainly will. It doesn't matter how good the game could be if it can't be played.
    ---
    Original:
Splatoon 1 and 2 were my most played games on the Wii U and Switch, respectively, so what I'm about to write legimiately hurts: Splatoon 3 is, in many respects, inferior to Splatoon 2. Fewer maps, fewer weapons, fewer weapon loadouts meaning less weapon diversity, and only the barest minimum of truly new things added. Out of 12 multiplayer maps at launch, only 5 of them are new -- the other 7 are returning maps from Splatoon 1 and 2. The only new primary weapons added are the bows and the Splatana. There's a handful of new special abilities but most of them are just cosmetic retreads of secondary abilities from the previous two games. The new campaign is nice, but predictable to anyone who played the previous campaigns. Same puzzles -- hell, the same cube boss appears YET AGAIN. I know people will say it's not fair to expect a new game to have as much content as the previous game that was supported for 5 years and I agree to a point; However, I expect a sequel to at least have more content than the LAUNCH version of its predecessor. Other than the addition of cosmetics, this offers less at launch than Splatoon 2 did in 2017.

But the biggest thing that drives my score down is the fact that the entire multiplayer system is just as bad as it's always been. When you start the game it asks you to set your region, but this is ONLY for future Splatfests. Regular gameplay is worldwide matchmaking like always, which means the game suffers the same problem as the last two where getting connected to people halfway around the world makes for very unenjoyable matches due to ping/latency. It has the same horridly low tick rate as Splatoon 2 so being killed around corners or seemingly "through" textures happens just as frequently as the last game. Connection errors are as prevalent as always and if someone disconnects, it ends the match for everyone -- even if it's all the way at the end of the match. I've been sitting at the "GAME!" (or salmon egg counter) screen at the end of a match only for it to error out and give no rewards for the time spent. Three games into this series and one would think they would have made a real effort to address these issues... alas, no.

There are some very good/much needed quality of life additions here like the ability to group with friends easier, the addition of a shooting range in the lobby room, the ability to skip the Deep Cut intro video, the Sheldon Licenses making acquiring weapons easier, and the locker room. But many of these could have been added to the previous game in a massive overhaul rather than requiring a full, entire, new game.

I still love Splatoon and I'm sure I'll be playing this for years to come -- but that doesn't change the fact that, in terms of content, Splatoon 2 is the superior game right now, especially since 3 suffers the same networking problems as 2. In a year or two, Splatoon 3 will probably be on par with the content in Splatoon 2... it's just a shame it didn't launch with more out of the gate (or better netcode, at least).

While I do think the new movement options have added a healthy amount of new depth to the game, I think its important to address the horrendous balance in the game right now, specifically with the obvious bias towards shooter weapons: as of the time of writing, there are a total of 19 standard shooter kits in the game, compared to the umbrellas and brushes which each have only 3 kits each, and the splatanas and bows only having 2 kits each. This has left the game in an abhorently unhealthy state, and means most players are using the same class, leading to most matches just feeling the same. Expand

The multiplayer lacks variety due to extremely linear maps that all look, feel and play the exact same and shallow gameplay that doesn't put any emphasis on teamwork, tactics or strategy. I guess that explains the name of this game too, cause this is the third time Nintendo has put out the same game where you do nothing more than meaninglessly splat some paint around but this time with even less vision, ambition or motivation than the previous games.

I quickly found myself playing this game once or twice every week ever since its first week and a half after release, even being hyped following the news of the game leading up to launch, and knowing the shallow content pool of past entries with all of that in mind. Now, you could say I'm not being that fair since the game is only a few weeks in, and has a plethora of updates of content to come spanning a whole two years, but some of the things I mentioned I feel should've been a little more elaborate or expansive at launch, and this is only going to become a bigger point of emphasis as the weeks go by empty of new substance. I very well may be proven wrong here, and could take this review off the board seeing as to how well this feedback from present day into the future ages. What makes it worse is that this experience is not free and requires a Nintendo Online subscription. Expand

    - Very little content
    - Almost no changes compared to part 2
    - Constant netcode errors
    - Event for 3 teams is constantly launched for 2 teams

A very crude product that is sold at full price

Splatoon 3 is a game where the only good is in the side content. The campaign, Salmon Run, and Table Turf are all good but the actual main game falls flat due to poor balancing, maps, and Nintendo Switch Online.

Two of the biggest gripes has to do with the multiplayer. Matchmaking on turf war/ranked is horrible, as someone who has a horrible win:loss ratio I still am being put against players who are extremely high level and are just sweeping the whole lobby. Another issue is the servers are significantly worse, as connection errors are extremely common. Neither of these were particular issues in Splatoon 2, so it seems that Nintendo really cut corners on this one trying to get this product out quickly so it has more shelf life before the next console.

Another huge issue is the decision to make the maps as flat and small as possible. For a game that steers hard towards a competitive base, map design is just sort of out the window here. There often is no way to flank the enemy, or if you can, it's extremely risky and easily punishable. This leads to one of two situations; your team or the enemy team spawn camps the entire game, or it's a stalemate in the center the entire time with only the last 45-60 seconds making a significant difference.

The singleplayer while not living up to Octo Expansion, is a great addition as well and works off of its success. This makes me actually look forward to the paid DLC they announced, as they seem to be consistent with level design on the singleplayer side.

Salmon Run is an upgrade and some ways, however some of the maps feel like a downgrade. As someone who primarily plays Salmon Run this continues to be extremely enjoyable, although the giant salmonid boss you have to fight is very frustrating. Solo lobby queuing is another nightmare on its own.

Splatoon 3 fails at a lot that Splatoon 2 soared with, which is disappointing to see and I hope Nintendo takes a lot of this sort of criticism spread through the internet to heart and make better outings to the franchise next time. Any fan of Splatoon 2 should check this out as well. Anyone looking to get into Splatoon should go play the 2nd game instead.

Its really sad that my favorite shooter had god awful internet connectivity. Nintendo really needs to step away from peer to peer and use servers for everything, especially so everyone doesn't disconnect in the last 30 seconds and have all that hard work go to trash. I can't believe I'm considering taking a break from this game just cause the online sucks so much that its practically unplayable.

Finally, and this is the biggest issue, I need Online for EVERYTHING, even buying clothes. If anything, this game should've had an Offline option to it, but no. Not even Ninjala has this garbage issue, especially since I've heard that Splatoon's connections are **** Yes. The biggest issue for me lies in the way the game matches you against other players, there's no MMR or other form of matchmaking system at all; some matches are just unwinnable, it doesn't matter what rank you're in, you'll get matched with and against all kind of players. Splatoon 3 doesn't take into account what weapons the players are using, which sometimes results in a team composed of 4 chargers (sniper rifles) matched against a balanced team with a good mix of long and short range weapons, making the match completely one-sided.

Splatoon 3 is NOT a casual videogame, If you're thinking about buying this for your kids I'll let you know it is not for everyone. Splatoon 3 is an extremely sweaty third-person shooter with a huge learning curve, meaning new players will lose A LOT trying to learn the mechanics of the game.

Losing feels awful, if you're unlucky enough to end up in an uneven match you'll either completely aniihilate the opposing team or get brutally stomped with the rest of your teammates and even though it is no longer possible to get spawn killed in this game, compared to its predecessor, you still won't be able to do much when losing. If you're in the losing team you basically don't get to play the game and it feels incredibly frustrating. Turf war matches only last 3 minutes, and yet it is still possible to die over 10 times in a single match or get over 20 kills, simply because maps are really small and you're pretty much forced to confront your opponent.
Almost every single map in the game is terribly designed, the maps feel too small with not enough space to maneuver around, meaning flanking enemy players is really hard.

The game is hopelessly unbalanced. There are over 50 weapons so it only makes sense that some of them are considered useless, not to mention every weapon in the game has a predetermined kit that you cannot change, so even if you find a main weapon that you like you might not like the special weapon or the sub weapon it comes with.

Splatoon 3 also has some really bad connection issues, I suggest not to buy this game if you don't have a stable internet connection. Although I didn't experience this myself, I heard many players complain that they're getting disconnected in the middle of a match as a result of those issues.

Now, not everything about the game is terrible; the single-player campaign is fairly decent and the co-op pve horde mode (Salmon Run) can actually be fun, even if hard at times.

I felt like I HAD to leave a bad review of this game, just to warn others about what they might experience playing Splatoon 3. Hopefully it has been helpful for somebody to read this review.

Look at some of these critic reviews. Absolute garbage shills. Seriously. Blows Splatoon 2 out of the water some said. It is basically a worse version of Spatoon 2 in many ways. And they could have made a paint pun instead, but they are too stupid to manage that!

Matchmaking is still garbage. Connection issues are worse now. Lockers are garbage cause your friends are not the ones near yours, just random peoples...who cares then?! Half the maps are still garbage. Oh, and there are fewer of them as well. Ranked modes are still garbage, nothing new.

You are still forced to play the maps Nintendo wants you too. So you can log in and see the levels and modes are garbage and just immediately turn the game back off. Great design Nintendo. Real winners. How are you so stupid? Like how? How is it possible for game designers to be this idiotic?

But I'm done giving Nintendo another chance. Maybe in the future I'll come back and give it a better score, but right now, this game is just garbage and the devs aren't doing anything about it. First, let's start off with one of the biggest problems we have with this game, and that is the netcode. It's awful. It can be super difficult to get into a game, or sometimes even finish a match because of communication errors. The lag the netcode causes can be absolutely insane too.

Next is matchmaking. The matchmaking makes the game so unwelcoming for new players. It doesn't care what level you are, it'll match you with players 100x more skilled than you. The matchmaking forces you into losing streaks to 50/50 your WL ratio and this is one of the biggest factors to this game being unfun.

Next is the maps. The maps are bland, boring, poorly made hallways and tetris S shapes, I'm so sick of it and so is everyone else. These maps have zero flanks, no gimmicks to make the map interesting, barely any inkable walls, which ties into me saying none of these maps encourage the use of the new squid roll and surge mechanics, except for maybe Flounder Heights. This game is updated at a snails pace. The game gets updated every 3 months with new content, which 95% of it is reused content from Splatoon 2. Most of the new gear is locked behind a FOMO system called the catalog, and if you don't get it by the time the season ends, they'll throw it into the gacha machine with a super broken rewards system. There hasn't been a truly new weapon since launch. I know we've had some new takes on existing classes like the Splattershot Nova and Snipewriter, but as for the new classes, there's just the base kits, and there's only 4 of them. Nintendo shows no acknowledgement towards the stringer and splatana classes while they import all the shooters and chargers from previous games. Splatfests, which are in-game events that have been a loved tradition since the first game has been messed up. Splatfest matches are unbalanced as hell, the past few fests have been EXTREMELY one sided, the new Tricolor turf war, while in my opinion it's fun, it's a really half baked mode that most people don't enjoy. They feel pointless, and you'll most likely find yourself grinding to Ruler and then not touch the game until after the fest. Last thing I'll touch up on is the bugs and balancing. This game is so unbalanced it's not even funny. One of the weapons have been dominating the meta since launch and the devs refuse to listen. Same goes for the bugs, you gotta wait until the mid season patch or the next season update for them to patch the biggest bugs. All I can think of positively is the music is cool, story mode is fine and that's really it.

I'm done giving Nintendo another chance at making this game better, it's clear the devs don't care about this game or the players. I've been a splatoon fan since 2018 and been playing 3 since launch. But my love for this series is being brutally killed.

Splatoon 3 takes everything the previous games did and makes it better in pretty much every conceivable way. More fluid, more dynamic, with a more balanced gameplay and a very welcome enlarged one-player dimension, Splatoon 3 is all that could be expected from the third chapter in the series, where the improvements fit neatly with the Splatoon legacy.
