I don't know what sort of masochist would make a game that is this hard. I've only played for around 10 hours but already died around 200 times and only make it to the second stage once. Playing this game does not bring me joy, it mostly just makes me angry.

Bought the game because of all the praise, and now I have to admit that I was fooled. What a miserable experience.
The game looks nice, and there is an abundance of items to interact with - and in order to get anywhere in the game, you have to ignore all of them, because otherwise you will die with almost guaranteed certainty. What remains is an anti-exploration game, where the game tries
What remains is an anti-exploration game, where the game tries to tempt to you to go fast, kill enemies, collect treasures, solve puzzles or meet fun characters, but you have to resist and instead timidly head for the exit, hoping the game doesn't screw you over anyway. And on the off-chance you make it, it is not rewarding, because all you did was carefully doing nothing, and your only price is that you now get to experience another noticeably arbitrary stage - same as if you died.
You might find a grim parable on life in that, but surely not a good time.
Do the dishes, it is more fun.

Even if I prefer the original game and its simplicity compared to Spelunky 2, I’d still argue that you’re getting one of the best roguelikes of all time here. That core theme of learning that I ranted and raved about in the original Spelunky review is right here front and centre, it’s just a little harder to parse with so much going on. If the worst thing anyone can say about Spelunky 2 is that it’s just a tiny bit less perfect than Spelunky, I think that’s a pretty good outcome.

While Spelunky 2 is not quite the landmark the original game was, it carries with it the same spirit of exploration and challenge. Part of me wishes it was maybe a little more lenient, especially in the first area, but that’s also not necessarily what Spelunky is all about. This is an immaculately designed game dripping with secrets and traps. It might not be for the faint of heart, but at least now with the glory of online co-op, the faint of heart can be dragged kicking and screaming to the City of Gold.

Spelunky 2 is a masterclass in great roguelite game design, expertly combining crushing difficulty with a steady drip of new secrets and lessons to keep you coming back for more. Some may be put off by the steep challenge—this is certainly a game you have to work for a bit—but putting in the effort is sure to reward you with plenty of thrilling memories. We’d give this game a high recommendation to any fans of roguelites or challenging platformers, and even if that doesn’t describe you, this is still certainly worth a look.
