The game is beautiful and is very polished! Although there is EXCESSIVE level recycle from other games and the levels sometimes connect in a weird way that can make the pase kinda weird but overall pretty fun!

I had the biggest, dumbest grin on my face from the start of the game to the end of it, with some minor roadbumps in there for some minorly annoying enemy placement and slightly confusing level design that is just common in 2D Sonic games. As someone who would put 2 of the 4 classic sonic games in his top 20 favorite games of all time, this was a complete treat.

It's Sonic. Nothing more, nothing less. I don't ever really recall anyone being a huge Sonic fan when I was younger. It was always a time kill game rather than yay, let's play Sonic. This is no different. It's better digitally cos I just do short spells here and there. If it was £6 then that is probably a fair price. I paid around £17 which it just isn't worth.

First Sonic game I've ever played and honestly it was pretty meh. I think many of the raving reviews are based on nostalgia not actual fun value of the game itself. Celeste for example I've completed 100%, because while difficult is also very fun and very forgiving. This game has neither of those two qualities. I like how the game contains bonus and special stages but likewise these are clunky and frustrating to play and if you fail one, you don't get another chance without replaying the entire main level to get back to it—for every attempt. So much frustration for bonus games that aren't really even fun. I really like the pixel art though so it gets points for that. My advice would be give it a miss unless you already know you love Sonic games as for me the fun factor was just totally absent. Go play Celeste or a Mario game if you want a platformer that's fun and easy to pick up. Expand

VERY overrated. To be fair, it's fun at times. It even has a few new ideas thrown into the mix. But those ideas are (very) small steps in the evolution of the Sonic formula. Not once did I have a "wow" moment and the last zone in particular was notably and disappointingly tedious.

IMHO, Sonic 1,2,3 are far superior (never played Sonic CD), and Mania is overhyped just because it's

IMHO, Sonic 1,2,3 are far superior (never played Sonic CD), and Mania is overhyped just because it's fan-made. As a stand-alone game some people might find it to be a more polished entry, but in the wider context (i.e. if you've already played Sonic 1,2,3) it is not that fun. Had this been released by Sega as Sonic 4 back in the day, critics would be panning it as unimaginative, uninspired, and lacking in fresh ideas.

This is a collection of classic levels from old Sonic. And they pass it off as a new game. The collection, so to speak, is normal. But the optimization is bad. When playing on an Intel Pentium, the game hangs. Although, for example, starting CSGO (who doesn't know it's a 3D game) and the game produces 40 fps. 40 fps in a 3D game. And 50 fps in a 2D game. Straight-up great, if not perfect. Introduces the Drop Dash, one of my favourite 2D Sonic mechanics. The game is so charming and great, the fact that this is a pixelated game probably amazed me when I first played it. Simple 10/10, nothing less.

Very similar to the original Sonic games on the SEGA consoles except it's not painstakingly, unbelievably punishing. And it saves your progress after each level. I do think some of the newer ideas are a slight step down from stuff copied from the originals. But overall, a super fun game!

Sonic Mania is just almost perfection. The levels are remixed and are just so much fun to play even after many playthrough, the pixel art looks beautiful, the soundtrack is phenomenal, the special stages are playable and at the same time, there's a Knuckles & Knuckles mode, it's just awesome. The only possible this game be topped if there's a sequel to this game with completely new zones.

It is beautiful and all, but I would wish to add an infinite lives option or at least more often saves. Currently you die on a last level boss and restart a few big levels behind kind of game. Must be real fun for those with countless hours to invest into the game, but with just a little more options could be also fun for everyone else.

Im sure this is the perfect fit for someone who loves Sonic. This was my first ever Sonic game though and to me it feels dated. I had just came off Hollow Knight and Ori and the Blind Forest and those felt so smooth comparatively. It was surprisingly difficult as well and became quite frustration. I can see a good game here though, its just not for me.

The game has 12 zones in total. 8 zones are from prior 2D sonic games. Act 1 shares quite a bit of level design and the spectacle from the original stages. The level design is immaculate and is solely focused on speed, reflexes and platforming which is what 2D Sonic is all about. Act 2 of these 8 zones have new gimmicks and set pieces that makes these old locales feel fresh again. For example, Chemical Plant Act 2 has you manipulating the zone's iconic pink liquid to make it fling you up in the air or just making it easier to traverse. The game has brilliant call backs to previous pieces of Sonic The Hedgehog media.

The game also have 4 new stages. Some of these stages stand toe to toe with the stages from the 2D Sonic games. Studiopolis, Mirage Salon and Press Garden in particular. It's simply incredible. It has sublime music that harkens back to old games. That goes for the game's entire soundtrack. Unlike Sonic 4, the musicians focus on capturing the essence of 16-bit music through modern lens rather than trying to blindly mimic 16-bit music.

And man, this soundtrack's good! The game's graphics are great as well. The game carefully refines and enhances the graphics of the 16-bit games. This game clearly can not be pulled off on a Sega Mega Drive / Genesis. Feels like the lost Sega Saturn game that we never got.

That describes the game as a whole. The lost sequel to Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

WOW, Team Sonic finally listened to the fans, surprising! They gave the fans what they wanted and that's a new 2D Sonic game! And MAN is it good. I think this game is given REALLY good reviews not just because the game IS good, but because it's a great game that came after so many well...BAD Sonic games. Anyways, let's dive into this review.

Okay, the plot! This is another one of our simple 2D Sonic Game Plots. Eggman's a **** and if I'm correct made some robots to steal the Chaos Emeralds, they make time rifts or some **** which sends you back to stages from the past 2D Sonic Games, like Green Hill Zone, all of the classics. And NOT Marble Zone, good. You can play as either Sonic, Tails, Sonic AND Tails, or Knuckles. A good line-up for a story that you don't really need to care about, the point of this game is to clearly focus on the gameplay, NOT the story, the story isn't bad, it just really means ****.

Yeah, it's a Sonic game, what do you THINK the soundtrack will be? It's great. As I said earlier, you play in stages from earlier games, their tracks are great, with a slight remix. There's also the special stage to get Chaos Emeralds, it's good. But my particular FAVORITE track in the entire game is from the Sonic 3 Special Stage stuff, it's brung back but what you win this time is a coin, the coins unlock extras and cheats, but the soundtrack for that stage is GREAT. The graphics and the background looks so fluent and better then the original stages, it's art, and I love it.

Alright, difficulty! 2D Sonic Games always have some difficulty, but this game isn't THAT hard, but still has difficulty, definitely more than Sonic Forces for sure. It IS difficult to get the **** silver coins on those blue-sphere stages, and some parts in stages can be somewhat difficult, but asides from that it can be playable by practically anybody who can use a Switch/PC, etc. I'll give the Difficulty a 6/10.

Alright, it goes down to one thing...FUN. Is it fun for Sonic fans? No **** doubt. ESPECIALLY if you're a fan of the original games. If so, you're going to have a nostalgia blast. **** hit me in the head like a Bullet. Your favorite level's, remixed Soundtrack, and the 2D Return, it's just so good. It's definitely worth it's price and I totally recommend it. As for my review? **** I don't see anything generally WRONG with the **** Does that mean it gets a...10/10? Nah, 10/10 is Masterpiece levels, but no doubt that Sonic Mania is amazing and SUPER fun to play as not just a Sonic Fan, but a video gamer in-general. So with that being said I'll be giving this game a 9/10, which on my scale is known as "amazing".

Sonic Mania is the best Sonic game I have yet to play - it has many pitfalls and occassional poor level design, but is an overall solid experience. I think I have never played a platformer with such unresponsive and slippery controls. Your front vision covers only 2 meters of the level, making the planning and understanding of the levels impossible. I am not a huge fan of platformers, but when every single person recommends me to play some - I do. So far Sonic Mania - is the worst platformer I have ever had recommended to me.

This game is easily the best 2d switch platformer (in my opinion). The only issue I have is that the game doesn't have the hyper sonic form if the game had that'd be so much better. One thing I like about the game is how much creativity and passion is put into the game it definitely shows that the fans were making the game.

The game is also provided with amazing remixes and an overall memorable OST by Tee Lopes. The new stages in the game do not disappoint and are the highlight of the game, however, there's only four of them leaving much to be desired. Overall, Sonic Mania is a great game and a great return to what made Sonic great in the first place. Expand

Sonic Mania is a fun romp for Sonic and the best 2D excursion the Blue Blur has had in a number of years, the best since Sonic Rush (though that game is arguably superior).

Most of my complaints are the lack of level originality for many of the stages, A lot of them are simply re-used from older games, and it was obvious they could have thought of more new levels similar to Studiopolis

The game is, however, very replayable.

Long story short, Sonic Mania is a game you can sink many hours into, but it's a really simple game and lacks much in the ways of content. It pretty much feels like an HD Genesis game, and is mostly unoriginal in its choices of stages.

No crazy story- all it is is that Robotnik found a cool rock, and Sonic is like “Hey stop” and Robotnik says “Nah heck you” and then there’s a bunch of rainbow robots. Oh yeah, and Knuckles is there. That’s another positive of this game- the obvious variety in characters without any strange new ones being added. All of them go to the same levels, except for Knuckles who has a few differences in his campaign. You can play as the titular blue hedgehog, the flying fox Tails, and the superpowered enchillada Knuckles. You’re also able to play as both Sonic and Tails. They all have different abilities, mainly that their way of upwards mobility varies. Sonic can use the power up shields in different ways from the other two by pressing the “A” button in midair (for example if you use the bubble shield power up you can tap A twice to get an extra high bounce), Tails can just straight up fly, and knuckles can glide and climb up walls. I like this, because it can provide you with various levels of difficulty. Tails is the easiest to play as once you get the hang of his controls, Knuckles is slightly harder but still has some of his own areas designed around his abilities and can get up to high areas with ease, and Sonic is the most pure and simple way to play the game.

Why did I not give this game a 10/10, then? If the characters and just playing the game itself is fun and exciting, what’s bad? Well, it’s the boss fights. Some are fun, but most are either way too easy or way too frustrating in comparison to the levels you fight them in. For example, you can defeat the Green Hill act 2 boss just by going under its body and by its legs and rapidly hitting it. But then there’s the fight in the first level lifted from Sonic CD, where most players were so confused by it that later on they changed it so you could defeat the 1st phase of it in under 2 minutes.

All in all this game is wonderful. It is an absolute delight to play and is fun for fans of the series both new and old. It’s just that a few things are flawed. I entirely recommend this game to anyone who’s looking for a game that’s challenging yet still fun to complete in full.

I love this game. I think it's a great hearkening back to the days of when Sonic was still in all his 2D glory, and I was one of the few to play almost all of the Sonic originals for the Genesis. I was not fortunate enough to play Sonic CD or any other lesser known 2D titles.

I'm giving you that preface to elaborate on why I am giving this game a mixed review.

I like to think that graphically, Sonic Mania is gloriously old school in every sense you can imagine. Every design feels like a re-polished version of the sprites that many gamers might remember from the original Big Four (Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles.) Stylistically the game stays very consistent and is very pleasing to the eye.

Sound design? Top notch. While it really tries to create it's own style instead of just using tracks completely similar to the original games, that's absolutely fine. Innovation is never a bad thing. The tracks are catchy and upbeat, no song really feels out of place.

Now on to the game-play. Oh boy. This is where things get a bit rough.

Sonic Mania has a surprising mixture of smooth, fast moving action that allows you to speed comfortably through levels with remarkable ease. Most of the time. Some of the more classic levels of the game highly reward high speed antics over low speed calculated movements, while some of the newer or modified older levels encourage player to think carefully before their next movement option.
This is where the game diverges a bit even from previous levels of the Sonic series. I can personally attest to the fact that you will probably die at least once or twice in this game to fatal obstacles that you won't be able to anticipate until they're already right in your face. I can personally confirm that in one of the levels, I tried to spin dash into an area with some moving platforms. The odd placement of the checkpoint comparable to the moving platforms resulted in my death. Twice. This is despite more cautiously approaching the platform on the second time around, I was still crushed between marginal hit-boxes I could barely see.

This is the sort of theme you will see a lot of in Sonic Mania. While the bosses and enemies are certainly challenging in their own ways, they are rarely a problem. I can say that sometimes enemies will look as though you have a very slight opening to actually hit and destroy them, only for you to get duped and lose your rings regardless. Frustrating, but acceptable by difficult game standards.

I want to also make it clear that compared to earlier Sonic games, this one is definitely harder. I have beaten Sonic 1 and 2, which are ironically harder (in my opinion) than Sonic 3. I absolutely breezed through 2 and 3 at least a few times, while Sonic and Knuckles was relatively difficult and I have only ever managed to beat it a couple of times.

In an apt summary, here is what I think about Sonic Mania. Beautiful, nostalgic, fast paced, frustrating, and at times, infuriating. If you don't mind the occasional anger and seemingly unfair obstacles the game will throw at you, you will have a wonderful time.

The music is good -- again, Studiopolis is the standout newcomer. The remixes of classic levels mostly left me cold, though. They generally play it safe and end up as an unhappy compromise between the 8-bit style and more naturalised instrumentation.

The gameplay... at times there is a great flow to it and it can be really good, but often it really isn't. I was hoping they would take what actually worked in the original Sonic games and refine it, but it's pretty much the same -- which means the good and the bad. There are the same basic contradictions at the heart of the gameplay -- the cramped screen, the frustrating damage and deaths, the inconsistent controls, the long stretches that require no skilled interaction -- you can beat most of this game pretty easily by holding a directional key and jumping, not needing to worry about taking damage because you can just pick up your rings again. Bosses are the same kind of story, with the exception of a handful of clever and entertaining ones.

I've played some outstandingly focused and well-designed platformers recently (most recently Celeste), and it really shines a light on the design deficiencies of Sonic and Sonic Mania. I believe that somewhere in the Sonic formula is the potential for an excellent game, but I don't think this is it.

After nearly 20 years of almost universally horrible games, the 16-bit icon has returned to his former glory and redeemed himself in the eyes of this long-suffering fan. Sonic Mania does a great job of reminding us what made Sonic great in the first place, while also FINALLY bringing the mascot into the modern era. Everything comes together - the music, the stages, the boss fights and the secrets - to form a package that is both appealing to the retro gamer and irresistible to anyone who enjoys a good game of run and jump. Whether on the Nintendo Switch or any other system, Sonic Mania needs to be in your collection yesterday.
