SNK 40th Anniversary Collection is a good compilation of SNK games, which will remind a lot of good memories to the fans of this brand, even if the Vs fighting and run&gun games are missing (find them on the Neo Geo Mini).

The 14 dated games included in the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection aren’t the stars of the show -- the care that was taken in dusting them off and presenting them is.

This collection may not appeal to everyone, as when you boil it down a lot of these title feel the same. This serves more as a collector’s piece, which isn’t a bad thing; it’s just very niche.

SNK 40th Anniversary Collection was craft with all the good intentions in the world, but that’s not enough. But the good emulation, interface and fonctionnalities don’t balance the cruel absence of many great SNK games.

I can see myself replaying Crystalis at some point, and working at Athena until I do finally beat it, but for this collection to be really worth the price of admission, SNK needed to dip into its more recent history, and particularly the fighting game genre, where the company has a genuine leadership position. It didn't do that, so it's hard to shake the impression that you'd be better off with a couple of the dozens of Neo Geo Classics that are available as individual purchases on Switch.

SNK 40th Anniversary Collection is an interesting package, but even with the upcoming titles to be added, I have to question its value. Luckily, this is not a full price package, but even then many gamers will doubt the value proposition, quite rightly. I'm not saying don't buy the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, but whether you'll keep playing the game after a few multiplayer sessions with friends is questionable indeed.

SNK 40th Anniversary Collection is a fine collective of games that helped define several genres, even if they weren't nearly as popular as their successors.

This marks the first time since 1990 the NES classic action-RPG has been officially re-released on any platform. (I don't count the mediocre 2000 Game Boy Color port, as that was sort of a remake and has quite a few changes.) Most of the other games are forgettable, but all are absolutely worth playing, as they will broaden your exposure to a period in arcades that has largely been forgotten. Combine the number of games total with the excellent historical images and other archival material, and you have a superb collection and a tremendous value. Recommended to all Nintendo Switch owners. Some of the games are entertaining for a playthrough, and the rewind feature is very much appreciated. The presentation is excellent, and I like the way they have implemented the aiming (with the right thumb stick) in all the twin stick shooting games. It is really disappointing that there are no Samurai Shodown games and no Metal Slug games in this package. It is also very disappointing that Beast Busters is basically unplayable because the aiming target is ridiculously sensitive and there is no option to change this. I bought this on sale for half price ($30AUD) and feel a some buyer regret. I think the Capcom Arcade Stadiums are much better value because many more of those games are still worth playing today. As a big fan of retro games, I do feel an opportunity was missed with this release. Full Review »
