Slay the Spire is the best single-player card game out there.

Slay the Spire is an endlessly addictive roguelike card-battler that’s a perfect fit for the Switch; a beautifully balanced game that’s arrived on Nintendo’s system with all the benefits of an extended period of Early Access on PC. Its combination of ferocious battles, entertaining chance encounters and selection of three impressively different player characters make every run to the top a nerve-wracking and totally absorbing affair.

While I’m playing, I’m enthralled by the intricacies of every new mechanic folded into my progression. When I’m away from it, I’m imagining new experiments and combinations to toy with on a future run.

Slay the Spire cleverly mixes the roguelite and card game genres, bringing with it a deep and satisfying strategy layer that encourages you to experiment over the course of a multitude of runs to the top of the tower. I can only hope that it continues to see regular updates, because it's already one of my favorite games of 2019.

Slay the Spire is the high point of roguelikes with deck building. Though that may be a very small niche, the game is so good that it would be a shame to miss out on.

With the growing library of roguelikes and card-based strategy games accumulating in the eShop, new entrants continuously need to find new ways to stand out from the crowd. Slay the Spire succeeds in this regard by foregoing a traditional story or narrative and allowing the player to become completely immersed in strategic thinking. It may not be the prettiest or flashiest roguelike out there, but it certainly has my attention.

Although the mods are not supported as in the PC scene, the Switch version of Slay the Spire is pure bliss, a dangerously addictive roguelike card game like you've never seen before on Nintendo's console.

It might not be the best version of Slay the Spire, but it’s the only one you can take on the go at the moment, being ensnared in its fun, rewarding gameplay, which can lead to missing a bus stop or two on the way to work without feeling all that bad about it.

Slay the Spire feels like a breath of fresh air that joins elements from card-based and roguelike games, which in principle may not sound like a winning formula but Slay the Spire gets it all right thanks to its combat system, lifespan and unpredictability of each experience. The result is an addictive experience that players of all tastes should enjoy.

While I have concerns over its difficulty and I’m not sure that I’ll ever fully complete the entire campaign, I remain quite impressed not only at the way the developers polished their work until their gem was revealed, but by how clear-eyed and elegant the final product is — there are a lot of lessons to be learned here, and my hours climbing the Spire were well-spent.

A loving homage to a niche sub-genre of days gone past, Slay the Spire uses procedurally-generated challenges to keep its deck-building gameplay fresh.

If we seek to play for many hours, Slay the Spire is for us. Its difficulty and strategy will delight the fans of roguelikes, who must choose their own path of suffering and fun.

Slay the Spire is one of those rare gems that I simply cannot put down. I’ve battled way too many monsters to count, I’ve unlocked every unlockable card there is, I’ve discovered all kinds of relics and even toppled the spire numerous times with each character. Yet I still find myself drawn back for one more crack at the mysterious spire eager to see what arrangement the game has in store for me this time. Tense, unpredictable and hugely rewarding Slay the Spire is one of the eShop’s best and a perfect fit for the Switch device.

I usually play a game until I beat it and then move on–but I can't stop playing Slay the Spire.

It took a while for the addiction to kick in. In fact, my first few games felt pretty unremarkable. I started understanding what the fuss was all about around the time I beat the game for the first time. That was when I started to appreciate the subtle interactions between the elements of the game. Slay the Spire is all about building the right deck of cards, and when you walk into combat with a good deck–that's a very satisfying experience.

The game's quirkiness only makes it better: the characters and enemies steer clear of classic fantasy tropes, and some look like they come straight out of an LSD trip. By contrast, the random events in the game feature the bad writing and lack of subtleness of early CYOA books, and somehow they end up feeling charming because of that.

All in all, Slay the Spire is a well-rounded package that could only come from an indie development team. Recommended for anyone who doesn't actively hate single-player deckbuilders.

This can result in the game becoming completely unplayable as it will break your save and then crash every time you start it. The only known fix? Delete all your progress and start over. Unacceptable. Avoid for now. Full Review »
