Accessible and with a generous lifespan, Shadowverse: Champion's Battle manages to provide an effective gateway to the Cygames card game. Coated with a good-natured universe, the title allows everyone to get used to the mechanics of Shadowverse thanks to many really useful aids. Unfortunately, the lack of a French translation prevents it from reaching the target younger audience, which makes it more suitable for those who wish to try their hand at a card game solo and on a laptop, preferably. Same criticism on the side of its disappointing technique, its too simple scenario and its structure a little too repetitive which have something to tarnish the experience. Not enough either to prevent the title from offering a nice introduction to its real end-game: Shadowverse on PC and mobile.

I have really enjoyed Shadowverse, and I will no doubt keep this on my Switch as my go-to game when I’m stuck on the Tube. The problem is that if anyone looks over my shoulder to see what I’m playing, they’re probably going to make a snap judgement about me and what I’m into.

Interface issues aside, Shadowverse Champion's Battle offers a fresh new spin on the card-battling genre (unless you've been playing the base game on PC). Its mechanics are an interesting amalgam of all that came before, but timing an evolution effect to clear a path to victory remains exciting every time.

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. It's not bad, but I still don't recommend it.
What didn't convince me about the game?
    - Anonymous main character.
    - Too many "Master" characters around the map. This is a rank seen as a peak, where most professional players manage to reach such a rank, and then some children or random npc (with no history or anything) around the map are at their same level.
    - Ridiculous final boss. There is only one GM in the game, definitely a cool duelist, well no. The final boss is a cheater. Sure the fight has a twist, but it's ridiculous that the creator of the game takes advantage of these things to win. Beatable, but still the worst ending the game could do. Leon could very well be the final boss of the Shadow Arena and I was never going to complain, cheats made sense at least.
    - The whole club must necessarily win, the same goes for the "Masters".
    - Poorly balanced, classes that are much stronger than others.

They mix up the battles with some mini-games that are simple, yet just different enough to keep things from going stale. Unfortunately, the card game itself gets pretty frustrating once you realize that the computer opponents aren't using actual random card draws, but their decks are instead perfectly stacked to give them really powerful combos. In addition to that, the game actively stacks your deck against you, placing your high cost cards near the top to slow your own combos. Overall, pretty well made, but I wish the battles were genuine. I get why they did this, it's easier to program and ensures the game has "boss battles" that you need to defeat, but it also gets tedious losing to the same perfect sequence of plays for the 10th time. If you're a Shadowverse die hard, give it a shot. If not, skip it. There are better card games on the Switch. Full Review »
