    The Serious Sam Collection undeniably has a lot of content, but the purchase decision will hinge on what fondness you have for it. This is likely an easy buy for the devotees or those who hold nostalgia for it, but as a first timer the flaws inherent in game design, technical performance, and audio design make the experience for me death by a thousand cuts. The Switch has better classic shooters and many well-made homages to them; seek out those before you settle for this.

    Serious Sam Collection is two-thirds amazing, but the final third is a real technical mess; Serious Sam 3: BFE is one of the least impressive Switch ports we've ever seen. It's playable, but surely the machine that can push out an acceptable version of Doom can manage this? There's the potential for early patches to improve matters, but the way it is now, we can only recommend The Serious Sam Collection as a great way to play the First and Second Encounters. That's not what's advertised, though, and as a result, we can only give this package a cautious recommendation. A three-game collection should be a three-game collection; not two games and the faintest suggestion of one.

    Ever since the day Doom came out in 1993, FPS games have been the primary genre I have played. I have tried all types, although I admit missing Duke Nukem 3d altogether in 1996 probably because I was out after college in the real world trying to get a job. Now although I have few special memories of my history, I have to say Serious Sam was a high mark and watershed moment, It was a new engine that seemed superior and sublime and to this day is on a higher plateau compared with the mass of shooters on the market. I only played the first and second one I believe originally, but right off the bat I was impressed with the amount of games available in the Switch collection. 3 full games plus 2 or 3 DLC for $30, what's not to like? Look. I think these mainstream reviewers are on drugs. Which drugs you ask? In this case, it has to be the anti-Sam drug of choice. I mean I know how much Nintendo life likes Duke Nukem, but I must say to me Sam is better than all those 90s shooters put together and I played so many of them my eyes turn green just thinking about it. Serious Sam has large open environments with enemies coming at you and shooting from long distances. I read how the engine was developed and compared to most other modern FPS titles like Wolfenstein II or Doom 2016, it feels revolutionary and a serious (pardon the pun) breath of fresh air. Gone are the tight corridors of Doom 3, replaced with lush, vibrant, colorful wide open exotic locals brimming with advanced lighting, particle effects, shadows, sunshine and big, open sanctuaries in pyramids where you can off tons of 3d baddies. And when I say 3d, no 2d sprites like in Duke Nukem. But I give Duke credit for the time a place and starting the look up and aim generation. And also his one liners. And back to the anti-Sam drug of the other reviewers I think I am on to what makes them high. They think Sam is copying off of Duke, However, I just think both heroes have their own vibe of macho and really Sam had every right to spew off egotistical one liners when his build engine is in every way superior to what preceded it and in may ways what followed after it entirely. I want to stress what Serious Sam is to the novice FPS gamer. It is a pure FPS without reinventing the wheel. It replaces the ultra violent cut scene repeating Wolfenstein with level after level of alien destroying action! I am certain other reviewers will disagree with me but the graphics and performance of this port are all top notch. I noticed one frame hiccup in 3 in the initial cut scene where Sam's chopper is hit by a rocket and spinning out of control. but the graphics looked so cool and there was so much going on on the screen I totally forgot about it. During the game and in intense enemy squabbles it does not miss a beat. And the menu is full of graphics and gameplay options and I really love how you can switch from first person to 3rd on the fly. I mean I have been playing tons of Resident Evil lately, and especially with 6, have learned that FPS games have no complete dominance over other well made shooters. Back to Sam- this game is just on a higher level than all the other Switch FPS games. It runs great, does not seem like a "port" perhaps because they did not farm it out to a third party like with Doom and Wolfenstein and the developers deserve extra credit for offering gamers a full package at a budget price! Gamer's do not pay attention to reviewers slamming the Sam collection for mysterious, debatable performance issues. To my eyes, there are none. Sure the loading times are a little long, but when the levels look this good whose counting? I sure hope they release 4 on the Switch. My biggest weakness is not being able to find the secrets in the levels, but just enjoy the action with no secrets. Thank you for reading my first review.… Full Review »
