Samurai Warriors has been one of the most precious things to me for years now. Not only have I loved the games themselves, but they've led me to another passion in Japanese history, and given me ideas for things to do while travelling across Japan that I would never have had otherwise. As it turns out, travelling to old battleground sites and Sengoku-era castles really is a great tourism activity. Samurai Warriors 3 was the start of all that and, with Samurai Warriors 5, Koei Tecmo has produced its finest effort yet. I would be incredibly surprised if this doesn't inspire a lot of people to go out and learn more about one of the most fascinating periods of warfare, contested by some of the most fascinating individuals that the world has ever seen.

Samurai Warriors has long been a vessel for an exciting delve into the Sengoku era—one that, despite its extravagances, always puts authenticity at its core. That’s truer than ever in Samurai Warriors 5, with a new, more dramatic approach to storytelling and a singular focus on the legacy of Nobunaga Oda, and the way it balances an extremely divisive historical reputation is nothing short of remarkable. With some welcome refinements to the endlessly enjoyable action-strategy game at the Warriors series’ core to round out the package, this is a fantastic new direction for Samurai Warriors.

I wouldn’t quite put it over Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition as far as Switch Warriors games go, but it’s not far from that mark at all. If you enjoyed the Hyrule Warriors games, give this one a go. Link isn’t here, but you’ll still have fun.

Samurai Warriors 5 gives you a sense of incredible herculean power as you play through it. Few other action games give you such an ability to cleave through crowds of foes that stand in your path, and it’s undeniably satisfying to be able to swat a few dozen people aside.

With refreshed visuals and a streamlined roster, Samurai Warriors 5 is perhaps the best Warriors game released for a Nintendo device since Warriors Orochi III Hyper. The crazy combat on massive battlefields has been streamlined, as has the between-levels management, making for an engaging game that should thrill both old and new fans of the franchise.

While Samurai Warriors 5 makes you put in the work, it’s been one of my favorite ways to kick back after a long day. Being able to turn your brain off and just get to battle while still having a grip on gameplay and narrative is something I treasure, although the game outpaced itself at times with its breadth. Musou games obviously aren’t for everyone – and I expect most players to probably find this too grindy – but for those who have been bogged down by the world’s gradual return to normalcy, Samurai Warriors 5 is a great game to get energized. Who needs caffeine when the drive to keep your combo going as long as possible is keeping you glued to your chair?

A wealth of complex systems can be overwhelming, but Samurai Warriors 5 combines an engaging gameplay loop with exciting mechanics to deliver an action-packed game that provides countless hours of fun.

Samurai Warriors 5 brings a fantastic recipe of intense, addictive combat, enveloping plot, a varied and rich cast, and even a mode with tower defense mechanics. All this contributes to an experience that will grab players by their collars and no matter whether experienced or new-comers, will throw them into a frantic experience that fits perfectly with the Nintendo Switch format.

Samurai Warriors 5 has a fresh look and new mechanics that make the series look great. Despite some issues, its good gameplay, good soundtrack and large amount of content will make fans enjoy the game, especially those who love Japanese culture.

Samurai Warriors 5 takes the long-running franchise, gives it a wonderfully vibrant lick of paint, throws in some excellent new combat mechanics and fills its story mode with well-directed cutscenes, resulting in a slick and stylish addition to the series that's sure to please fans and newcomers alike. Yes, it makes a few fumbles here and there - we aren't fond of its grindy system of upgrading your Dojo and Blacksmith, it limits your character choices at times in the campaign and that stripped back roster is sure to irk some - but, overall, what's here is a fine addition to the Switch's line-up of Musou titles. This is a fast-paced, flashy hack and slash effort that looks and plays fantastically well and, most importantly, performs almost perfectly whilst doing so.

Samurai Warriors 5 on Nintendo Switch runs better than most Warriors games on the platform and is a good way to experience Koei Tecmo’s newest if you value portability above all, can tolerate cutbacks to various visual features, and are ok with a variable performance.

A very, very traditional musô ... but nevertheless successful. Admittedly, its cel-shadding remains an obvious make-up for a dated technique, but it also causes a reinforced Japanese atmosphere and some appreciable graphic effects; Likewise, the repetitiveness of its missions is an obvious black point but is compensated by a diversity of characters and interesting gameplay, and this despite the criticized reduction of its cast.

Samurai Warriors 5 won’t shock anyone who’s played one of Omega Force’s Warriors games before, but it does present a great new style and enough over-the-top action to keep you coming back.

It's undeniable the amount of content that Samurai Warriors 5 boasts. Completing Nobunaga's campaign unlocks even more missions, and that's in addition to all of Mitsuhide's and assorted side missions not required to reach the end credits. While mission variety and challenge felt lacking, there are reasons to replay stages to complete every objective and shoot for S rankings, which are actually tied to opening up some of the post-game content. Ultimately, there's a type of mindlessness to playing a game like this that serves as both a nice break from more mentally demanding ones and also a reminder that musou games are still quite niche, and perhaps for good reason. If you enjoy breezy, repetitive gameplay with hours and hours of missions to play and stuff to unlock, Samurai Warriors 5 will do just fine. However, I can't see it doing enough to bring new fans into the series.

Samurai Warriors 5 is a minimised musou that's been stripped back to its most fundamental parts. Perhaps this deconstruction was meant to revitalise interest in the genre, but it sadly leaves it feeling flat and mediocre. Omega Force hasn't forgotten how to make a musou, though; that much shines through in the combat which at times shows flickers of promise. There's just not enough to see and do here, and it becomes repetitive far too quickly. This, coupled with the fluctuating Nintendo Switch performance, makes it difficult to recommend.

As a relative newcomer to the musou style of play, where you’ll often feel like you wield almost god-like power slicing through entire squadsAs a relative newcomer to the musou style of play, where you’ll often feel like you wield almost god-like power slicing through entire squads of enemy fighters with repeated swipes of your sword, I’m by no means a ride or die proponent of it. However, as skeptical as I once was that the subgenre could appeal to my tastes, thinking it would be too goofy and repetitive in some fashion, a simple revelation has made it grow on me. With SW5 specifically I hit a point in my repeated combos, enjoying my meter getting more and more ridiculously high, and then unleashing my fury on a level boss… that there was a reason it appealed to my inner primal gamer. It’s just a different way of playing great games in one of my old-school favorite genres, the beat-em-up. Maybe I’m late to the party, and this is something well-known, but for me it was an easier way to access this world and helped make it click. With that core play out of the way, which can be extremely satisfying when you’re in the zone (though, watching it played back, it looks far more dull than it is in the moment), you can then take in everything else about this specific title that clicks quite nicely. It looks fantastic, full of color and detail, and the story (though perhaps a bit of a soap opera in many regards) is actually fun to watch play out with its twists and turns. I can’t speak to how this shapes up to its predecessors, what tweaks may or may not have been made to its formula, but I feel I can speak to the reluctant gamers out there who’ve never given the series a try. If you have any love for classic beat-em-ups in your heart you should absolutely have a great time with this revisionist take on the formula. The action is intense, if you want to find success you’ll need to be precise and make full use of the formidable powers each character wields, and once you’re in the flow of things it all comes together to be quite satisfying.
