Through contact with this source of magic, the Book developed a wicked free will of its own and became the Roguebook!

I must say that RogueBook is one of those strategic action-packed games, with an adventurous journey and plenty of detailed graphics and entertaining scenes when moves are being made that I just love.

If the Switch is your only avenue to play Roguebook, I would still recommend it to deck-builder fans looking for a solid take on the genre. I would steer clear of handheld mode as long as it lacks a font size option. Although the best version of the roguelike remains on PC with a mouse and keyboard, Roguebook still offers tons of fun on the Switch. Just be ready to squint a lot.

Whatever platform you play Roguebook on, its sheer quality helps elevate it to the top of a genre that has become far too overused over the past five years. The precision balancing and depth of the gameplay, the entertaining design and varied exploration elements combine to overcome the fact that you’ve probably played what Roguebook is offering a few times over by now.

While you are partially at the mercy of random elements, there’s a great degree of agency in how your chosen heroes and their abilities work together. I think the core game here is just as good as titles like Slay the Spire or Monster Train, but the Switch conversion leaves a bit to be desired. Play it elsewhere if you can, but if you enjoy the genre and only have a Switch, you’ll probably be able to put up with this port’s issues.

Rougebook offers enough unique takes on gameplay to create a compelling experience for those highly interested in deck building games and a fun experience for those who aren’t quite as familiar with the genre. The dual hero system and presentation truly makes Rougebook stand out. However, the usual issues with the deck building game remain. It’s the random luck of the draw as to whether you’re given good enough cards to succeed in battle. Otherwise, you have to grind your way around to find useful cards or upgrades to help you. It might not be a game for everyone, but Roguebook is definitely worth checking out.

Roguebook is an interesting roguelike deck-building game with a difficulty curve that could either frustrate or excite you. If you like a challenge, and enjoy card battles, consider picking this one up.

Roguebok is a card-based roguelike that takes many elements from successful games like it but fails in its execution with them. Muddled sound, blurry graphics, stuttering animation, illegible text, no accessibility options and an overly boring story makes this a game I’d probably just avoid completely.

Load times can be long and there are strange pauses between inputting actions and effects resolving. These things are definitely annoying, but the graphics are lovely, the game design is amazing, and I have now spent a very enjoyable 50 hours playing Roguebook on Switch. The performance issues are disappointing, but there is still lots of fun to be had here if you like deckbuilding games.
Edit: I just bought the Fugoro DLC for $15 and have played another 8 runs with this new character. Fugoro is really cool and plays quite differently to the other 4 characters. My total playtime is now 80 hours (30 runs) and this is now one of my all time favourite games! I think they have also patched some of the input lag issues recently so it plays better now too.

Great game, but agree with the other reviews here it's just not optimized for the switch...

    - VERY long load times
    - in slay the spire I can play my 3 basic attack cards in under a second - this game it takes multiple seconds to play each card cause of lag.

TLDR: Sure this game is great on on PC, but the chunkiness on switch feels like it's too much to look past...

The controls are super sticky, the load times are horrendous (minutes in some cases, and just for basic fights, not bosses), and the text is tiny. You can tell they just ported this over and did ZERO optimization on it.

The game is fun, but these issues make it really hard to want to play this multiple times, like you're supposed to. Buy this on another system. Do NOT get it on Switch until they do some more work on it.

Text on cards is so small in handheld mode that it is barely readable. The UI in general seems to have been not optimized well for handheld mode.
