Nov 9, 2017Rogue Trooper Redux is for those with a distinct taste. I can't deny the problems found in its cover mechanics, and the visual upgrade isn't that grand. That being said, the hectic 13 missions remain a fun romp to get through. The campy story and amount of upgrades only elevate what the developers tried to pull off. Rogue Trooper requires a more aggressive gameplay style than I remember, but I can't really say that I'm bothered by it.

Oct 17, 2017Rogue Trooper Redux boasts an enjoyable campaign with a wonderful supply maintenance system in place. The ability to spend your earnings on whatever you please rather than relying on what is handed to you sets this title apart from the more “standard” games in the genre. The online multiplayer modes aren’t as fun as they could be, though, and the main game’s relatively short length (anywhere from 5-10 hours depending on your play-style) means that it strays just short of being a truly amazing experience. Despite this, it is still definitely worth your time - whether you’ve played the game before or not. If you enjoy your shooters, give this one a go.

Oct 20, 2017Rogue Trooper Redux isn’t the worst remaster to be released. The narrative is campy, the gameplay is interesting, and it’s great to see how it influenced other shooters that came after the 2006 original. While there are some innovations in the campaign, there’s no denying that for a remastered video game, there are a bunch of problems. The gameplay still feels rooted in 2006, despite some tweaks, the cover system which was once revolutionary is now a nuisance, and the graphics aren’t anything to rave about. With that being said, Switch owners interested in a game to waste a few hours with mindless fun will find enough to enjoy about Rogue Trooper Redux. Fans of the original game and the comic book series will have a lot of fun. There’s no denying the impact that Rogue Trooper has had on the modern shooter; the game just didn’t leave me with a great impression.

Oct 17, 2017If you’re going to choose between RTR on the other consoles or the PC, and the Switch? The only reason to choose the Switch is if you simply must have the game in a portable fashion. It’s not that it plays poorly, it’s that it’s so clearly a downgraded version of the revamped game, making it a zero-sum equation if you know what I mean.

Oct 24, 2017Rogue Trooper Redux is an odd one for sure. It's far from the classic Rebellion claims it is, but it's un undeniably charming and entertaining blast from the past nonetheless. It's the videogame equivalent of watching an 80s action movie and simultaneously laughing at how ridiculous it is, while also feeling misty-eyed nostalgia for the days of yore. So take from that what you will. It's ugly, not a good cover shooter by today's standards, and a lot of the time it doesn't even work properly. But it's very reminiscent of the period, and will provide fun for those who remember it.

Oct 24, 2017Rogue Trooper Redux is a fun little curio. If you're after a solid, old-school "blast from the past" style shooter, you could do far worse.

Oct 23, 2017If you’re looking for a nostalgic way to get your Rogue Trooper Redux fix, then you might be better off looking at the PlayStation 4/Xbox One releases. The Nintendo Switch keeps up with them in terms of visuals and gameplay mechanics, but falls behind in controls and aiming. The controls simply don’t make the gameplay experience comfortable enough to enjoy the game.

Nov 10, 2017Rogue Trooper Redux doesn't fit the Switch. The gameplay is dated and boring. It's not very playable in handheld mode.

Oct 26, 2017The Wii version of Rogue Trooper had much better controls, the graphics fit the animations and is still the best way to play out the Quartz Zone Massacre. Rogue Trooper Redux on Switch is an unpolished mess with technical issues and looks horrible docked and in portable mode. The new model's rigs cause extensive clipping and makes character anatomy do all sorts bizarre contortions and twists that are just painful to look at. The limits of old hardware made the developers be creative with their modelling and consider more carefully how they would be rigged. All of that is thrown out the window in favour of technical advancements... not artistic advancements. While it is playable, expect a very sloppy version of what was already a run of the mill third-person shooter.

Oct 26, 2017It’s not the longest game ever – it’ll take you 10 hours at most to beat – but for those who long for the days when that was considered good enough rather than the single-player epics we have to slog through these days, it’s a welcome change to return to a tight, padding-free adventure.
