This game isn't bad but its not great either. There is no leveling system so as you find gems to power up your units on maps and unlock new skills your units get really good and then enemies stay pretty much the same the whole game. The writing is solid but the story as a whole is very shallow. All of the story sequences are really sort you never get really invested into anything that's happening. There are definitely some weird story moments in the beginning where you party does things completely against their beliefs and it doesn't really make any sense, but the story gets better after that, although it was never very engaging for me. My biggest issue was that the music in this game is really bad. There are maybe four tracks total and in many story sequences that are suppose to be dramatic (like enemy ambushes) they just keep playing really calm relaxed music and it ruins the whole moment. This happens in nearly every story mission and by the end of the game it really drove me crazy. All in all if you really need a strategy rpg fix on switch this probably isn't the game, but if its on sale and you want to kill 8-12 hours its not the worst experience. Expand

great atmosphere of the game, memories of 16-bit games come back, the soundtrack could be more varied, limited character development is also a small downside, but still a good game

Fans of strategy RPGs with a more classic 16-bit style will likely be drawn to Rise Eterna on looks alone, but beware that the vintage look comes with some quality of play issues that also feel a bit out of date. One thing I’d certainly fault is the time it takes to get things rolling, with a lot of up-front time spent on a story that honestly just wasn’t that interesting or unique. We can learn more about the characters as we go, but give me a taste of the gameplay instead of just making me advance more dialogue right out of the gate. In terms of the tactical play I’d consider it below average, simply being less elaborate than its competition but also lacking a spark of energy from unique play systems to differentiate it. All in all if you just enjoy this style of play and want to spend a fair number of hours in this world it’s fine, just don’t expect much more than an overall very vanilla experience.

If you love old school turn based strategy games, this one is sure to disappoint. There is no real story line worth getting in to. The dialogue sounds like it was written by a tween. All of the enemies are so stupid and spread out that there is no challenge to the game. After battle 4 I thought to myself "is this really it?" unfortunately, the answer was yes.

I ended up rushing through the game and then replayed tactics ogre knights of lodis to feel better.

Rise Eterna is good enough to give tactical RPG fans something to enjoy while they await big studio releases, but its lack of difficulty and unfortunate UI issues will prevent other gamers from playing through to its unsatisfying ending.

Makee definitely knew what it wanted Rise Eterna to be. I applaud some of its ideas, like how the developer tried to implement a crafting system and skill tree. But on the whole, it doesn’t offer the same balanced challenges as its contemporaries. The resulting game is filled with maps that are too large and enemies that stop feeling threatening. There’s effort here and it tries, but it doesn’t leave you feeling like you accomplished anything.

Rise Eterna is not terrible by any means. It's a perfectly playable effort to emulate Fire Emblem. But it's also incredibly shallow, lacks character and meaningful narrative, and misfires in several critical areas with the gameplay. On the other hand, since Nintendo and Intelligent Systems are showing no haste in announcing a new Fire Emblem, I guess we've got to take what we can get.
