Rhythm Fighter is a rock-solid rogue-like that offers a surprisingly massive amount of variables for each of your runs. From characters, to weapons, to abilities, to enemy variations, there's something for everybody to enjoy. Everything culminates in a really enjoyable title that is worth your time.

Rhythm Fighter finds a good home on Switch as it melds together music and mayhem for short bursts of gameplay. The sheer variety with all of its characters, randomness, and potential systems make it a perfect fit for the handheld. Still, the gameloop isn’t as addictive as I could have hoped for, with some mechanics not leaving a lasting impression.

Every day, more and more rogulikes are released, often making it difficult to figure out which ones will stand out. All of them are vying for attention, attempting to do something unique and interesting. Fortunately Rhythm Fighter feels like a fresh take on the genre, even if it doesn’t quite stick the landing.

Rhythm Fighter provides an interesting concept and although the beginning is overwhelming, it is an enjoyable and forgiving experience. You don’t need much sense of rhythm or direction, making it a friendly experience for many. It starts to become repetitive despite the battlefield being randomly generated, but its catchy music encourages you to pick up the game again and again.

Echo Games' Rhythm Fighter provides a decent, yet ultimately unremarkable roguelike experience. While it offers a lot of the genre's staple mechanics, it doesn't do much with them — Rhythm Fighter often feels like the "lesser version" of something else.

Bringing together so many mechanical elements to the scope and vision of Rhythm Fighter required a much more visionary developer than the one that produced the game. That’s not to say it isn’t entertaining, and there is a lot to enjoy with the game, however, it is also true that the overall experience is messy and the team lost control over what they were trying to achieve, making for something far too clumsy and clunky for the kind of precision that it needed.

Rhythm Fighter is a simple, fun side-scroller that is great for players who enjoy a music element to their games. While there are some issues with its Nintendo Switch control mechanics, getting to obliterate vegetable monsters with a salty fish as a weapon is satisfying and amusing. Rhythm Fighter might not be the best choice for players who have a sensitivity to flashing light and unstable motion on the screen however, limiting those who might enjoy picking it up. Rhythm Fighter could benefit from a setting that limits the screen motion and lets players find the beat on their own, giving them a cleaner combat experience, but for now its a solid niche title with a few glaring flaws.

Despite a growing backlog of AAA titles, I find myself wanting to keep returning to the game knowing this time I could beat the boss. While the game is far from perfect, Rhythm Fighter features an addicting gameplay and progression system that sees you saying "just one more run." With great art style, wacky characters and addicting music, this is a Nintendo Switch title you don't want to miss.
