Everything about Puss is overwhelming, and I’m convinced that the game is trying to make you feel like you’re high on catnip. But the absurdity of that conceit works. A part of me was always looking forward to what unexpected combination of visuals, sounds, and puzzle-solving awaited me with each new maze or boss fight. It just sometimes hurt my head to try to comprehend it all.

I bought this game initially because I like cats and it looked weird. The trailer made it seem like it’d be a mix of bullet hell and simple mazes, which I’d probably end up hating. In fact, after the initial world, I ended up getting hooked. There’s a surprising amount of variety on offer, with every level being completely unique and every boss being utterly bizarre. PUSS! is not a game for the faint hearted, but it’s less hardcore than you think. At the very least, wait for a sale and give it a chance."

It’s shape shifting levels means that unlike other hard games, you don’t have the opportunity to learn and master each section, so don’t have the same sense of achievement. I got this on sale at the same time as towerfall ascension, and that kinda put puss in perspective - because it’s clear which game I’ll keep coming back to. And it’s not puss. Full Review »
