This entire game can be played in either two player local co-op or four player online co-op. I was thrilled to see that they had both. Once you are online you can jump right into a friend’s world and start exploring together. There are hours of content in this game and it could be a while before I put this down. From the ease of combat, to the colorful worlds, all the way down to the gameplay loop of finding new portals, it’s no wonder that you can see a whole day go by without even knowing it.

Portal Knights on the Switch is a really enjoyable game outside of a few minor nitpicks. It can be a tad frustrating to have to constantly mine materials for new gear in the very early going. But much like Minecraft, a lot of the game is mining and exploring. If you take your time and enjoy every aspect of the game, you'll likely enjoy Portal Knights a lot more than if you just try to rush through each randomly generated island.

Portal Knights is a spiritual successor to Minecraft that thankfully works well and creates an enjoyable experience on the Nintendo Switch.

Sitting somewhere between the Minecraft-type gameplay of building and exploring, and the RPG-like features of crafting, battling, and upgrading your character’s skills and abilities, Portal Knights feels like it would most suit families, friends or even distant friends online, who wish to explore either of these genres of gaming together in a sometimes challenging - but usually charming - package.

A solid porting with a good amount of content. Portal Knights for Nintendo Switch is improved by the new touch system, and despite some frame rate issues is able to provide a lot of fun for several hours.

Nothing less and nothing more than an excellent porting of a very good game, with "touch" support and all the stuffs of the original version.

An undoubtedly solid product that can offer many hours of fun in the hope that technical deficits will be corrected as soon as possible.

The Switch release is great but there are a few technical issues. The draw distance is almost too small. It reminds me of No Man’s Sky on a base PS4 at launch which is really bad. Given how dense the grass gets just in the opening tutorial, it is pretty sad seeing an area close by look flat from a distance but suddenly have grass appear when you get closer. I like the touch implementation though.

The Switch edition of Portal Knights has nothing less than the other versions. An excellent porting that still keeps everything good about the original game (and its flaws too).

Unlike most Minecraft clones, Portal Knights delivers an experience wholly its own and for the most part it succeeds. Playing through the main story is a highly enjoyable experience and for those who are looking for a new sandbox to build in. The home worlds allow the freedom to craft to your heart's content. It's even better with friends, too. The inclusion of co-op was a very wise choice and gives yet another element to elevate it above its competitors.

Portal Knights on Nintendo Switch is a great little game — it offers a lot more to the experience than Minecraft does, but does not throw you in the deep end like Dragon Quest Builders does, which is coming to Switch in 2018 as well. Players will likely find more appeal when they play with friends, because on your own, the adventure does not seem so grand. That said, given the number of options that you can employ to customise your experience to your choosing, there is plenty to keep solo adventurers coming back.

Portal Knights uses Nintendo Switch to cover some of its failures and become a better game than the original one. A videogame that, without being perfect, it entertains the player for plenty of hours.

Portal Knights may not be a stand-out title, but it fills a desired niche of those looking for something Minecraft can’t quite deliver and fills it well. It dips just far enough into the wells of both creativity and RPG adventure to satisfy its intended audience, and the multiplayer portability the Switch offers gives this particular platform release an edge.

If you are a fan of Minecraft and are looking for something fresh with an RPG feel, Portal Knights will definitely be a game that you should pick up. It combines the traditional gathering and creating formula with multiple, randomly-generated islands to explore packed with dungeons, monsters, and towns. While those who are looking for a creative mode won’t find that here, those who are looking for a more combat-focused building game will enjoy what Portal Knights has to offer.

If you're looking to entertain a kid who's into Minecraft, get onto Portal Knights, because it offers a lot of the same. It's better for youngsters who have a lot of time on their hands, of course - adults will have a tough time getting a satisfactory experience when playing in short bursts. At £24.99 on the eShop, it's overpriced - hopefully the pricing isn't too silly by the time the physical release arrives.

While the attempt to encourage exploration is appreciated, the skin of Portal Knights isn't distinct enough to keep me interested.

Portal Knights is a Minecraft-alike with a lot of personality and a lot of promise, but in its current state, I just couldn’t enjoy it. It feels bloated in places, empty in others, and just can’t compare to other games in the block-placing, creation “genre”. Fun for a while, but outstays its welcome too quickly.

It might not be the best example of the genre, but if you’re going to play it then the portable option makes the Switch the best place to play.

The thing I like aboutI tried the game earlier at Steam - I recall as 'Early Access' - graphics is as good, really stunning on the Switch. The thing I like about Portal Knights is the graphics, the traveling concept between worlds (with friends local/online), really awesome. The game has so much more than Minecraft. Portal Knights got "things" to do....so it's not only crafting, mining lol - also adventuring the interstellar worlds, bosses, awesome soundscape ect. I recommend! The game performs very well in handled also + local split-screen or wireless or online, thumbs up! Full Review »
