    It's great when you need free chips, but Poker Club was built entirely around the social experience and that's largely absent here. I love Poker Club's design and philosophy, but unfortunately, where Ripstone's other games on Switch are exceptional, this is a vastly inferior port and experience.

    Overall, Poker Club is an enjoyable game that, for such a small price, holds hundreds of hours of gameplay. If you’re a poker fan then this is definitely for you.

    There are plenty of game modes and the visual component is very close to a real poker game. At the same time, the required internet connection makes this a much less convenient handheld experience on the Nintendo Switch, and it's difficult to understand why the visuals are so downgraded when compared to a television screen, but crossplatform play between different formats is a point in its favour.

    Poker Club on Nintendo Switch does a good job at providing a truly immersive poker simulation. Unfortunately the entire package of Poker Club isn’t great. The incredibly poor AI will teach you nothing in offline mode and the overall slowness of all action makes for a boring experience. Playing online is even worse, as players can take an impossibly long amount of time on each turn. It’s just painfully slow enough that you’d likely be better off just playing poker in real life.

    While gambling-oriented games, whether straight cards of some kind or casino, are generally pretty niche I will admit that every once in aWhile gambling-oriented games, whether straight cards of some kind or casino, are generally pretty niche I will admit that every once in a while one will stand out and catch my attention. Certainly the look of Poker Club is more interesting, opting to ignore the typical 2D approach and shoot instead for a more “realistic-ish” look. This does lend a sense of personalization to things, with you getting some limited options to give your potential poker champ their own distinctive flair, but the main question is how is the poker playing itself? There are certainly a fair variety of styles of Texas Hold‘em here to engage with, allowing you to at least flex slightly different strategies, as well as ways to play solo or even with others online. While I suppose you could consider the matches more immersive, looking a bit more like real life than your typical presentation, I’m not sure it works in the game’s favor. Ignoring what “Uncanny Valley” vibes you could potentially get, the real problem comes down to the pacing that comes with even minimal animations of people throwing down chips or cards or even reacting. If you don’t mind taking your time and just want to soak it all in, this may be fine, but if you’re just out to get down to business, win or lose, it may be more frustrating than fun.
