The energy tank limit is quite an unnecessary cash grab as well. Quite disappointed but to be expected from a free to play game.
Update: They have kind of made it easier to get your items to level 30 now but they have added more very expensive skins.

Not only is this a Pay to Win mirco transaction game that is extremely simple. Not only does it have an in game currency system that will be exploited by both the tyrannical company running the game and by hackers. But read the user agreement, just me you want your cards to be connected to the email connected to this game.

In short, Pokemon Unite is fun:
    - The games are short so you'll never be stuck in hour long toxic games,
    - Tutorial is comprehensive, and you can dive into a game within 15 mins.
    - The characters have distinct roles but the choice in movesets allows for enough variety
    - The controls are relatively easy, especially if you've had experience with the right stick aiming.

BUT....it's going to cost you in the long run. It's already apparent that Absol, Alohan Ninetales, Pikachu and a couple of others are much better on launch. Unlocking better items costs currency. You won't be able to unlock all of these straight away without grinding so you will be forced to pay money. You have to decide how much the game should cost you, will you get enough enjoyment out of it for the same cost as a triple A game and pay accordingly?

Tencent has a good product on their hands, but like all MOBAs the introduction new characters and balance patches will determine its future

Dumbed down and gutted MOBA. Infuriating to play. There's also the issue of pay 2 win items. The only reason to even look at this game is because it contains Pokemon IP, which is slowly mattering less and less as the Pokemon brand continues to decline. If you want an enjoyable mobile MOBA look elsewhere. If you want another half-baked cash grab of a Pokemon themed game, look no further.

Pay to win, do I really need to write more? It would be fun if it was more "fair play" as even the game itself use but pay to win is not FAIR.

And the CPU need to have difficulties, because now It's too hard. It's impossible to match it, even if we use team work.

i wanted to like this game so badly, but i just can't bring myself to. The controls are irritating, the movement speed is terrible, and the matching system doesn't seem to work. You either end up getting completely swept or completely dominate. I have yet to see an in-between, and it's no fun either way. the combat had potential, but the absurd cooldowns and, again, the painfully slow movement speed just makes for a boring experience. Characters aren't balanced, with some being able to stun/freeze you before one shotting you and others just being able to one shot you for no reason, even at the same level, max hp
Then, after dying, the respawn cooldown is obscene- so if you end up in a situation where you get swept you just end up twiddling your thumbs the whole match.
If you end up dominating, that also isn't fun because you just end up spawn-killing the opponent and scoring goals for however long the match lasts. It's boring. I'd rather be playing bookworm adventure deluxe, unironically.
as a side note, I don't think this game is pay to win. I want to make it clear that that is not my issue with this game. I do not care about the purchases you can make, and I don't see a problem with them. I have a problem with everything else.

    tl;dr:
boring game unless you are sweaty and play league
then its just league for babies

Its so sad, this idea could have been great but its terribly handled by Tencent games who are supposed to be veterans at creating such type of games called "MOBA" but instead they added unfair mechanics, pay to win, broken characters and no penalty for anyone who throws teamwork out the window.

If you download this game and you play it you will lose, lose, lose and lose till you throw your controller in the ground in agony and frustration. This is due to their poor matchmaking system which will be pairing you up with the dumbest people on earth, also due to their game breaking mechanics such as Zapdos.

Zapdos is a pokemon that appears near the end of the match and which ever team kills it, get this, they get 50 orbs each, instantaneous scoring, double the points when they score, and a damage and stun to the enemy team, thats too many, and I repeat, TOO MANY BENEFITS.

In other Mobas you will find this sort of mechanic to give the losing team a chance to win, but its usually a temporary buff or such and if the team that successfully obtained said buff does not strategize properly the buff itself wont win them the game, but Pokemon Unite says "nah", and literally hands the team who defeated Zapdos the whole game in a silver platter. This mechanic alone makes the game meaningless, skill doesn't matter, strategy does not matter, the only thing that matters is Zapdos and that is the unfortunate truth.

In conclusion, this game is garbage of the stinkiest kind, don't bother downloading it, and if you have pre-registered for their mobile app please un-register, trust me, your money, time and sanity are better spent elsewhere.

Pokémon Unite is a new breed of MOBAs that is perfect for the average gamer. League and Dota are games that at the end of the day you have to spend countless hours to reach a level of ability that is considered "good". Unite is not only welcoming for new players but it lets people who have day jobs feel as though the can be competitive in the ranked lobbies without having to sacrifice over 90 minutes to play one game. Those that say this game is pay to win, or casual only are not looking at what the game can provide for the average gamer at large.

If you are a hardcore League player you will not like this game. Everyone is on an even playing field at all times whether they are new or old, because of the "unite license" system that allows you to permanently retain specific Pokémon using either free in game currency, which is extremely easy to come buy, or buy paying for it with real money which is not required in the slightest. the vocabulary for the roles and classes of characters have been dumbed down so that you can pick this game up and instantly know what your job is, and the lack of custom chat feature makes it so you are not able to yell at the people you are playing with.

This game at its core is a MOBA for all people, and is a great step towards how games should be balanced at launch. If you want to play the next highly competitive E-sport game this is not it by any means, but if you and your friends want something that you can play as a team no matter what your group skill level is this is certainly a fantastic choice and one that will continue to grow over the coming months as it comes to mobile devices as well as the Switch.

This is a decent MOBA, but there's a lot of room for improvement. It gets pretty repetitive pretty fast since all the arenas either look the same or they are the same, it's hard to tell. There's not a lot of depth in the Pokemon you play as, and the COM controlled Pokemon you beat to get points to score with is pretty lacking in depth as well.

It feels like there's not much to this.

It feels like there's not much to this. It's good for killing 10 minutes or so, but even for a free to play game it's lacking. It needs more, and it could really do more is the sad part. There's hundreds of Pokemon, but only a couple dozen to pick from. Of course you do have to unlock most of them, so you feel even more limited in choice early on.

The controls are fine enough. The gameplay isn't too terrible, but nothing remarkable either. It's like the developers were shooting for the moon but landed in Key West, Florida. There's a lot more to this franchise in terms of Pokemon and terrain to do battle on. Tencent and Pokemon could do way better here.

I have not spent a single cent on micro transactions and in two weeks time I have multiple Pokemon I can play with upgraded items. Are they completely maxed out? No, two are 20 and one is 15. I can tell you though that my ranked match losses have very little to do with the level of my items and much more to do with team play and each individual understanding what to do in order to achieve victory through out the match.

All this was accomplished by utilizing the free tickets to boost my coins/battle points earned and upgrade items. I have a total of 101 matches so its not like I did nothing but play Unite for two weeks. Quit review bombing because you see micro transactions and learn how to get good without them. This is an excellent game and it deserves better than to be bombed for offering players a choice.

That aside... this game is complete trash. Bugs and horrible servers aside, I've never seen such a mess of control/design decisions in a moba, EVER. Which is laughable because we've had how many examples of how to properly do a moba now? And tencent is just like nah, we'll do it our way.

But the most horrible aspect of this game BY FAR is the comeback mechanics. WHOOOO BOY the comeback mechanics just trivialize the entire first 90% of any match. The final 2 minutes of every match completely invalidate the entire match leading up to it, and the game does EVERYTHING IN ITS POWER to punish the team that actually fought hard to outplay the enemy for the entire game leading up until then.

Pay to win. It can be a fun game but it’s not worth the money and it is sooooo expensive. Predatory is a good description. I just can’t recommend it and there are so many games that are better and won’t have you shelling out hundreds pods of dollars repetitively.

P2W, unbalanced AF, you're limited in the weekly coins you can get (4 weeks for a 8k coins pokemon, 5 weeks for a 10k coins). Zeraora, a pokemon lowkey worth 3 in one, is timelocked. Means that mobile players won't be able to get him, because players who started after 31/08 can't get him.
Autoaim is the trashiest you can imagine. Whatever setting you take, it will act in the opposite:

Competitive play is impossible in a game where OP heroes are timelocked, aim is dumb and P2W.

Dead game in a few months at best.

The community already established is kinda gross, you have the MOBA fan and the pokemon fans, which are two very toxic communities. The game gives you a lot of free stuff, which in fact you can buy things, but it is not, I do mean it's not P2W. There's no game breaking characters nor holdable items, or even clothes that boost your performance in anyway if you pay to win. Honestly if you are dedicated to the game, and have a group and are yourself good, then you'll have a good time. Literally I see a few players complain that some characters are better, which is true, but for a game like this, you're only as good as the characters. Not gonna lie Pikachu is abusive, but mostly things are ok with the other mons. Balancing does need to scaled, example: play styles, rank, streaks, etc. This can easily be a MOBA players go to if you like league of legends, and grew up with pokemon as myself, and honestly I like the game and played maybe 70 ranked matches right now and honestly I know I'll sink in more time, because I am enjoying it and the grind is real, but the satisfaction of getting stuff without actually putting money into it is nice. The only things that arent free are certain characters, clothes, items, and altered skins. If a skin boosts stats, or clothes please show me proof I haven't seen it. Also like I said, if you're truly good then it shouldn't matter if you have it all or not, because you don't get much back from having everything, just upgraded items (which can be grinded towards) and pokemon(which can also be grinded towards, but takes a while. The biggest issue I see is just pokemon selection, and quote on quote builds, I've never heard such nonsense. Look, if a items fit the characteristics of the role you play then equip them, like don't listen to builds or others, it's other people who are truly ruining the fun, with what they say, and honestly it's those people who have probably put in $100+ in the game and can't justify it, I know I couldn't.

On the other, it forgoes its generosity by hosting pay-to-win elements, an unbalanced initial roster and poor performance both in connectivity and rendering for its intended console, The Nintendo Switch.

It's a refreshing take on the MOBA genre which allows long-time Pokémon fans to see some of their favorite Pokémon in a new, fun-to-bask-in light. In its pursuit of simplicity (probably intended for a younger audience) shorter play sessions and less decision-making lend it a more relaxing feeling.

Consequentially, it grows repetitive at a much faster pace than other titles in the genre. It's still in its infancy. As is, it offers a beautifully coated alternative for fans of the franchise. For anyone else, it showcases a barebones product with a lot of hindered potential.

    Pros:

    - A robust initial roster with varied gameplay for Pokémon fans that is sure to grow with time.
    - An elegant item and 'battle item' system that marries flavor and function nicely.
    - A more relaxing kind of MOBA you can "play on the go".

    Cons:

    - Simplistic systems grow tiring really quick.
    - Poor performance and connectivity taint an otherwise entertaining experience.
    - Its current pay-to-win systems are detrimental for anyone looking to immerse themselves in a more competitive way.

P.S. Zeraoras have a tendency to perform infinitely better on opposing teams.

The map is imbalanced. Drednaw is way more impactful than Rotom. Making bottom more important than top. Zapdos straight up wins the match if you get it, making the 8 minutes before Zapdos irrelevant.
AND the pokemon themselves are imbalanced, some pokemon suck some are OP which is typical, but for christ sake I don't expect the game to be balanced but pick your poison not all of em.

    Rampant AFKers and leavers
Horrible monetization, weekly cap on how much in-game currency can be earned to basically force players to by the Pokemon that they want to play.

I do want to like the game, I'm an avid pokemon fan, I play a lot of competitive VGC and love the games even some of the worse ones, I also played league of legends for over a decade. I don't think I've ever seen a team win Zapdos and lose yet, they'd literally have to go afk.
The Pokemon to choose from are kind of limited and some are 1000% better than others, like Snorlax. When it's a new game and it's free there's some things you can excuse as they work on it and patch it, but really? Nobody who play tested the game saw the Zapdos problem? You could literally afk the first 8 minutes of the game, come back and steal Zapdos and then xd you win. It's ridiculous.

Or it would be fun, it’s just that Zeraora is stupidly overpowered. And then you just can’t up your rank past a certain point because of all these facts. I’m done until the game gets fixed.

    1. Problem is lack of communication and planning. People just KS your jungle camps just because they want to have higher level. Well that ally was already level 6 and I'm still struggling at 4, no matter, still steals.

    2. There's just too much wrong type of damage in game. There's plenty of people shooting 30% of hp away from you from range, while someone who dives in close with 3 extra leaps can hit you 30-40% hp away in each jump. Once you get behind, you fall down even faster than in League of Legends, which for past 2 seasons has introduced the worst types of balance changes and increased snowball significantly.

    3. UI is confusing as hell. There's like 6-7 different tabs that track your "progress". There's one where you get login rewards, there's one where you get level rewards, there's one where you can complete quests, there's one for personal achievements, there's one for... Oh and then there's WEEKLY, MONTHLY, ONE TIME rewards that you keep digging from the system.

    4. The pay to win aspect. BUT it's not that bad as you would think. I was able to get 2 items to level 20 without paying a dime, and there is promised 3 items that can permanently boost item level to 30. So this means if you know what you're doing, you can boost any major role item to maximum and not have any competitive disadvantage.

But bigger issue is that once you are forced in Off-role, meaning that instead of lets say you play support, you're going to play tank, you're going to be picking 1-2 Pokemon Available in free roster or whatever you're unlocked, and then equip 0 defensive items for them.

    5. Battle preparation There's not enough time to prepare for combat, and it's incredibly difficult to do without going into the Match Ready screen to change items for each played unit. There's 3 items for passive gains, there's 1 item for active, and then you got to inform which lane you're going. It's just too much for too little time.

    5. The actual combat is pretty terrible. This could have been great game for PC, but this got released mobile controls or switch. Aiming is too hard to do right and there's just too many missclicks... which I guess could be practised...

    6. The game itself vs other franchises. This game just doesn't seem to have too much effort behind it, compared to other big Pokemon Games. It's (just like with Pokemon Go) they did the least amount of effort, least amount of innovation, least amount of joy added to the game, to just make it another milking machine for whales. (Whales are people who spend ridiculous sums of money on usually Free to Play games).

If this was lets say 15 euro purchase on PC, with full roster and reasonable systems behind it, good enough roster for me to actually care (I literally didn't give a **** about current roster), I would have been interested.

But I'm sure this game will despite it's horrible score, somehow reach billion players who all have their parents credit card to burn, just like with Pokemon Go.

You watch this ACTUAL reviews you see this game is 3.8 (or probably worse since writing of this review), that's the REAL score, not the fake score the company is pushing in Google Store with possibly deleting low scored reviews and paid reviews.

Like I said it's not that hard pay to win, but I don't think you should spend any money on this game... or if you do, only spend the maximum 19.99 to get double the income and then never put a single dime on it. Don't do it like these dumb streamers who donate 2000 euros for this free to play game to "I'm just showing how bad the system is", basically feeding them the revenue they gain from your eyeballs watching their advertisements.

I loved Remoat Stadium. I really, really dislike Thea Sky Ruins. Tencent is changing tack, and I’m not changing with it.

    Pros
    Easy to learn
Mobas have a lot of replayability
    Short games

    Cons
Takes a long time to receive Pokemon
    Two abilities
    Stiff competition

In a moba style game, I like chaos. I like team fights. And Pokemon Unite took deliberate steps to be “just like” other mobas, leaving its niche of essentially what was a straight up team-fight for 8 minutes (out of 10 minute match) of wholesome fun. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next step was to lengthen games because it has deliberately slowed down farming and scoring. Now there always has to be one person in each lane so you can’t fully team-fight in most cases. The result? People sit in their goal zones and deadlock the lane—there’s nothing to farm, and you can’t leave your goal zone because if you do—you get hit and they heal, or worse, they score while you get a tiny bit of farm. Deadlocked lanes aren’t the player’s fault; this is what the game has pushed for—to add a lot more idle time in games.

This game feels a lot more like League of Legends, and I’m more likely to go play that than play Thea Sky Ruins because there are more characters, better skins (for the same price), and more abilities—which leads to a greater variety of gameplay. Pokemon Unite will never be able to compete against other Mobas if it copies them because less moves = less variability per Pokemon.

To be clear, I mastered the game and made it to high level masters. I know what I’m doing and how to win. I loved Remoat Stadium. It was clunky and frustrating, but also a lot of fun. There are things the game is working on—like the reporting system—but I’ll be taking a break until, if ever, Tencent decides to make changes to the game to make it feel fast paced again.

The money practices have changed significantly as well. Skins were always expensive, and I’ve actually bought a few to support the game back in Remoat Stadium. Players can earn about 3000 coins per week grinding the game. The last two Pokemon released cost 14k. Now, Pokemon are getting harder to purchase with in game currency and you can’t buy new Pokemon with in game currency for a week after they’re released. It’s crossed a line of ethics in my opinion. You want me playing your game because it makes it easier to matchmake, giving a better experience for everyone. When I like your game I will spend money on the Pokemon I like. Do NOT try to frustrate me into spending hundreds of dollars. That’s not promoting a game, that’s just disgusting.

Matchmaking is bad, plus it lacks fun game modes. In-app purchases are overpriced, and it has a lot of bugs that they never fix.

A great game... that sadly is a painful experience to the vast majority of its players.

While Unite is virtually perfect on paper, the reality is that its Ranked Mode is UNPLAYABLE by yourself. And the blame is all on the developers.
This happens because of 2 very precise reasons:

    1. The Roster. 14 out of the 31 playable characters are Junglers.
This means that, every single game, 2 or 3 players will fight for the Jungle position. Both during character selection and during the actual game.
    2. While player can be reported in Unite, they cannot be reported for any real motivation besides AFK.
This means that those players who are cluelessly forcing their team to lose due to very bad decisions (like stealing from their own team's Jungle) won't know they made a mistake, won't learn from it, won't stop ruining everyone else's experience for no reason at all.
The developer needs to address this issue.keeping The developers don't acknowledge this issue, and are about to release yet another Jungler.

This game has the potential to be the next LOL, and even surpass it sdue to how popular the Pokémon franchise is. But we're reaching a turning point...
Tini, it's make or break now.

It's P2W and filled with bots.

Hardcore fanboys will jump to defend saying the items, pokemon and emblems being locked behind paywalls isn't P2W, because of course, what else do brainless fanboys do.

Gross microtransaction, very gross to see nintendo join the scum club. one of the only reasons to stick with it... and prices of skins... wow I don't want gov intervention but they make me want it a bit for gambling and microtransactions the businesses use to turn loyal small group into hunted whales

Another pay to win game. Stay away guys,i played a lot of hours to get to this conclusion. No voice chat no chat to communicate no role picking before matchmaking so every game ends up with 2 junglers for example,so bad.

dishonest game. a pay-to-win in disguise. There is no balance between teams. The items win if you have them at lvl 30. The whole game is worthless, whoever gets the zapdos at the end wins. Is there a way to get the points back? No, because there is less than 50sec left to finish the game. ****

Pokemon Unite is a free game almost like the League of Legend system. It is first accessible and remains visually beautiful. Unfortunately, we would have liked more of a Pokemon franchise than a LoL-like. That said, it remains pleasant to play and contrary to what we can say, pay-to win is not too present for this game without too much ambition.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unbalanced classes. Carried, broken characters. Constant updates where unnecessary characters are added instead of ACTUALLY BALANCING THE GAME. Too many comeback mechanics. Terrible matchmaking. Troblesome in-game mechanics. Pay-to-win EVERYWHERE. A BLATANT rip-off of Smite. Need I go on? Was anything in this game even PLAYTESTED!? They need to tear the whole thing down and start all over again, because this just isn't working. This whole game is just piss-poor. And the sad part is that IT DIDN'T HAVE TO BE!!! This is anal sauce! It's so bad, it's a work of art! It's a fine, delicately crafted sculpture of **** Expand

Overall, Pokémon UNITE is a MOBA with a lot of potential. It’s already great as a casual game with friends, but I believe with some tweaking to Zapdos and removal of the “pay for held item upgrades” option, a strong competitive MOBA lives in Pokémon UNITE. Until then, it’s hard to call it much more than an above-average entry in the crowded MOBA space.

Pokémon Unite is the first attempt at creating a MOBA with the pocket monsters – and I must admit it’s a successful one. The game is fast and intense, but also easy to get a grip on. I don’t expect it to take the esports scene by storm, but it’s very enjoyable and works great in a doctor’s waiting room or on the bus. As for me, I can’t force myself to stop playing Pokémon Unite and hope the developers will keep updating it. [10/2021, p.61]

Pokémon Unite's potential is undermined by its balancing, and might not have enough to offer either of its target audiences.
