    Casual AF, looks good.
It's not trash, but it's worse than LoL, Dota 2, Smite, Dawngate, Paragon, HoN, Arena of Valor, Vainglory, Battlerite. Unite is at the same level as HotS for me.
Just for fans, no hxc players.

    Cons
Takes a long time to receive Pokemon
    Two abilities
    Stiff competition

In a moba style game, I like chaos. I like team fights. And Pokemon Unite took deliberate steps to be “just like” other mobas, leaving its niche of essentially what was a straight up team-fight for 8 minutes (out of 10 minute match) of wholesome fun. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next step was to lengthen games because it has deliberately slowed down farming and scoring. Now there always has to be one person in each lane so you can’t fully team-fight in most cases. The result? People sit in their goal zones and deadlock the lane—there’s nothing to farm, and you can’t leave your goal zone because if you do—you get hit and they heal, or worse, they score while you get a tiny bit of farm. Deadlocked lanes aren’t the player’s fault; this is what the game has pushed for—to add a lot more idle time in games.

This game feels a lot more like League of Legends, and I’m more likely to go play that than play Thea Sky Ruins because there are more characters, better skins (for the same price), and more abilities—which leads to a greater variety of gameplay. Pokemon Unite will never be able to compete against other Mobas if it copies them because less moves = less variability per Pokemon.

To be clear, I mastered the game and made it to high level masters. I know what I’m doing and how to win. I loved Remoat Stadium. It was clunky and frustrating, but also a lot of fun. There are things the game is working on—like the reporting system—but I’ll be taking a break until, if ever, Tencent decides to make changes to the game to make it feel fast paced again.

The money practices have changed significantly as well. Skins were always expensive, and I’ve actually bought a few to support the game back in Remoat Stadium. Players can earn about 3000 coins per week grinding the game. The last two Pokemon released cost 14k. Now, Pokemon are getting harder to purchase with in game currency and you can’t buy new Pokemon with in game currency for a week after they’re released. It’s crossed a line of ethics in my opinion. You want me playing your game because it makes it easier to matchmake, giving a better experience for everyone. When I like your game I will spend money on the Pokemon I like. Do NOT try to frustrate me into spending hundreds of dollars. That’s not promoting a game, that’s just disgusting.

The game itself would serve as a fantastic introduction to the MOBA genre, with matches more simplified and concise than other MOBAs on market, allowing the player to grasp the core concept of the game and the genre at large quite intuitively. The introduction of chooseable movesets and item builds in the pre-game lobby lends an interesting depth to the strategy of the game, and having it done at the start of the game removes a lot of the tedium of menu navigation during the games themselves.

However, as has been stated by numerous users before me, the predatory monetisation and addiction tactics clearly utilised by the company are morally deplorable, particularly given Pokemon's appeal with younger audiences and the accessibility of the game itself allowing for young audiences to participate in the game. The game is rife with monetarily complex and predatory micro-transactions, be it for new Pokemon to play, new cosmetics, or even the aforementioned items which provide a direct advantage for any players seeking to play the game more competitively. To heavily monetise a game without any regulations or age requirements is completely irresponsible, and quite frankly revolting. I've long since lost faith in the Pokemon company's commitment to publishing quality products rather than relying solely on the appeal of the branding, but to see them stoop to such blatant levels of money-grubbery disgusts me to a point I can't ignore, and I'm inclined not to support the game at all. I only hope the negative backlash might prompt the Pokemon company and Tencent to make more ethical adjustments to their monetisation scheme, as a truly welcoming and enjoyable game does still exist beneath it all.

On a not-so-good side, we have the fact that the game itself doesn't tell you which pokemon uses Sp. Attack and which one doesn't. Thankfully some websites got you covered, still is a big fail here.

Another not-so-bad thing is that matches sometimes feel so QUIET, the announcer needs to be more active in my opinion. Additionally, the menu has some slight lags.

The real problem comes with the microtransactions method. If those were like a regular MOBA in which you pay only for cosmetics or experience boosts or the battler pass It wouldn't have been too much of a deal, however, here you can pay2win which is really discouraging. MOBAS are games about skill and strategy not about how much is your credit card's limit.

    If there were not a pay2win mechanic I would've given this game a 7 or 8.

    4. This game is pretty fun to play(imho).

    Negatives:
    1. Weekly limit of 2400 coins is garbage. To buy all the pokemons you need to play this game for months or donate. I don't like it.
    2. Currently, Zapdos is way too powerful, it needs to be nerfed.
    3. This game don't have good way to talk with your teammates, this is pretty garbage (you can't even write message before game start to simply ask your teammates to let you get fast lvl 5 in jungle).
    4. It is possible to play with newbies even in decent rank.

If tencent will remove weekly coins limit, make some balance changes, add more pokemons and make money on skins - this game'll be awesome, but in current state it is only 4/10. (in my opinion)

The Pokemon to choose from are kind of limited and some are 1000% better than others, like Snorlax. When it's a new game and it's free there's some things you can excuse as they work on it and patch it, but really? Nobody who play tested the game saw the Zapdos problem? You could literally afk the first 8 minutes of the game, come back and steal Zapdos and then xd you win. It's ridiculous.

Honestly, every PROFESSIONAL MOBA player in the freaking world could have told you that balanced matchmaking is #1 for a making a MOBA game enjoyable. Hell it’s imperative to make any competitive game enjoyable, and last I checked, this is not Nintendo’s first competitive game. So why is it, you made the simple and brilliant decision, to pair solo queue players up against full squads of players who are partied up and communicating? That’s like having a game of dodgeball where one team has to wear blindfolds. STUPID. How did this even get approved? Was this even considered in the 2 weeks you took to plan how this game would work? This is one the BIGGEST barriers standing in between this game being 10/10 and the 3.7 user rating that it has. This and properly training players HOW A MOBA WORKS need to be PRIORITY #1 for the next update. You have YouTube, you have professional MOBA players, you have reviews. F the skins for 1 bloody month. What do I see after reaching Expert 4 (Gold 2 in LoL) rank?

-Item level gaps start to get very noticing when facing stronger enemies, which is ****

-In Expert (Gold) rank, yes RIGHT THERE you see how people play like literally Silver 4/below lol players who should be learning the basics of ranked matchs, even low Bronze (no map awareness, no clue about when to do/ignore objectives, when to def, score etc. If you have negative jungler gap, you are more likely to lose). It gets even worse when you see your partner in lane to go against the opponent with more lvl/moves. WTF, how don't people in Gold rank start playing serious? They LOVE to gift Zapdos in the Endgame even if you are winning to throw the game for fk sake and never watch opponents trying to score. (No complaining about the lack of skill, much audience will be new with this game BUT... HAVING THEM IN EXPERT RANK IS POINTLESS! LET THEM LEARN THE GAME! IF YOU PUT THEM WITH PPL WITH SOME MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE THEY WILL SUFFER AND WE WILL SUFFER BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO LEARN AT THEIR OWN PATH AND WE NEED MORE EXPERIENCED TEAM MATES!) --> THIS will take me to the next point.

-In that mentioned rank you can come across with... Beginners and Greats... (Bronze and Silver) and Elite or Above (Platinum+), does that mean... YOU HAVE TO FACE MUCH STRONGER OPPONENTS WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF HAVING MUCH WEAKER ALLIES? DO YOU EVEN REALIZE HOW COINFLIP IS THAT?

-Balance sucks. Assassin/Speedster class is as bad as in LoL, because they have too much damage or escapes. Their job is to kill a squishy target not to wipe the entire team (Zeraora/Absol...) furthermore, when you see Blastoise doing so much damage BEING A TANK and nullifying you skill giving you FULL COOLDOWNS you start to feel how something is NOT RIGHT. Balance team seems a bit drunk. Even the damned Charizard who is curiously placed in low tier, the generic basic edgy guy because yes pokemon. It gets annoying when uses ult and gets literally busted for like 10 secs. In any scenary it's plain ****

As a conclussion... it could be great but is not. As almost everything in this rotten genre where if you aren't Gold+ you don't worth a **** for people. I saw the difference because I've been between Silver and Gold ranks in LoL, how do people act and the community is a very important aspect of such games, this is not gonna be different so if you don't like clasist and egoplayers better stay away. Better play Pokémon D/P/PT BW1/2, Conquest, Colosseum or Explorers of Sky. These are the peak of the franchise in content and quality. Save your suffering, MOBA genre is not meant to be fun, even if you win.

This could have been a chance for a pokemon game with pure fun gameplay without any baggage, but I guess that was just too good to be true.

For a MOBA, it's very accessible. Controls are very easy and the moment-to-moment gameplay is simple to understand. Definitely made with children in mind. The unique mechanics are a bit odd and have some balancing issues. The game favors steamrolling, if a group of enemies win a teamfight and all score, they instantly get to full health and there isn't much your team can do about it.

The mechanics are well-explained but the meta and objectives are poorly directed. Nobody's really sure where to go and it's easy to forget that you don't make any progress defeating enemies without getting points and scoring, which can be unfairly difficult if you're pushed back by a steamrolling team. Especially so with the 10-minute timer, which makes the game more casual but makes comebacks very rare.

Outside the gameplay, there's classic Tencent scummy freemium practices. The game entices you with beginner quests that dry up and rewards will become scarce. I expect opinion of the game to go down sharply after the 14th day of its existence.

In a nutshell, standard free to play game. Avoid.

    - The animations and visuals are there.
    - The gameplay is fun.
    - But the whole game is plagued with Pay 2 Win microtransactions. To be fair, they are quite hidden, unless you start exploring how is the enemy pokemon 3 lvls lower still one shoting you.
    - Cap on in game currencies (so you can only get so much)

Game is fun to an extend but in general it's a Pay-to-Win disguised as a Play-To-Fast, Tencent really sucked out all the potential the game had to begin with the Microtransactions and Upgradable Gear.

You can have a huge lead during 8 minutes and lose because of Zapdos mechanic in less than 1 minute which is a horrible balance and that leads to way too much frustration.
Also, it's hard to communicate with your team.
The weekly cap to obtain a new character is also a bad choice, just made to make money and it's so obvious that it's disgusting.
I'm not surprised that Tencent/Timi did the gatcha system in the addition to all the monetization systems this game already has, they do the same on many of their games.

The final 2 minutes where all points scored are doubled and if you die in this time span it hits you with around a 50 second respawn time. To top it off you can defeat zapdos, essentially earning your whole squad of 5 50 points, in the part of the match where all scored points are doubled. You often find ppl with no way to participate in the last 2 minutes at all once they’re knocked out thanks to the majorly crippling 50 second respawn and the time it takes to travel the map. Let’s not forget the team that defeats zapdos and got all those free points I talked about earlier, also get to score on your goals uninterrupted now once they reach em. i wanted to like this game so badly, but i just can't bring myself to. The controls are irritating, the movement speed is terrible, and the matching system doesn't seem to work. You either end up getting completely swept or completely dominate. I have yet to see an in-between, and it's no fun either way. the combat had potential, but the absurd cooldowns and, again, the painfully slow movement speed just makes for a boring experience. Characters aren't balanced, with some being able to stun/freeze you before one shotting you and others just being able to one shot you for no reason, even at the same level, max hp
Then, after dying, the respawn cooldown is obscene- so if you end up in a situation where you get swept you just end up twiddling your thumbs the whole match.
If you end up dominating, that also isn't fun because you just end up spawn-killing the opponent and scoring goals for however long the match lasts. It's boring. I'd rather be playing bookworm adventure deluxe, unironically.
as a side note, I don't think this game is pay to win. I want to make it clear that that is not my issue with this game. I do not care about the purchases you can make, and I don't see a problem with them. I have a problem with everything else.

However, the games communication features are almost none existent. You can turn voice on (has to be turned on with every individual game) but in all my games I never once encountered another player who turned it on. There is a wheel to choose from a list of phrases but beyond signalling what lane you're going to it's useless.
The ranking system is all over the place. It's really hard to make any sense of it at all. Worked my way up to expert rank and even in the expert ranks, I was frequently put into games with four great ranked players. And when I say frequently I mean I could honestly count the times I had a team at my rank on one hand and it just felt unfair at the end of the day. That combined with the lack of communication results in a team that just doesn't have any coordination. Which brings me to the player base.
Oh boy... Oh dear... Oh man...
The player base is something else. Even at the higher ranks, I seen afkers all the time! And I'm not exagerating there. It's a real problem. You will encounter many many afks. You'll see people feeding lanes, people running around like headless chickens is a near-constant. I honestly felt like making a public apology to the league of legends community for every bad thing I've ever said about them. You will see some stuff playing this game that I guarantee. From what I gather there are a lot of children playing this game, which is understandable it is a Pokemon game after all. But you will have players doing crazy things and you have no way of trying to communicate to that player at all. It really is the communication features and the mess of a ranking system that is massively letting this game down.

    1. Problem is lack of communication and planning. People just KS your jungle camps just because they want to have higher level. Well that ally was already level 6 and I'm still struggling at 4, no matter, still steals.

    2. There's just too much wrong type of damage in game. There's plenty of people shooting 30% of hp away from you from range, while someone who dives in close with 3 extra leaps can hit you 30-40% hp away in each jump. Once you get behind, you fall down even faster than in League of Legends, which for past 2 seasons has introduced the worst types of balance changes and increased snowball significantly.

    3. UI is confusing as hell. There's like 6-7 different tabs that track your "progress". There's one where you get login rewards, there's one where you get level rewards, there's one where you can complete quests, there's one for personal achievements, there's one for... Oh and then there's WEEKLY, MONTHLY, ONE TIME rewards that you keep digging from the system.

    4. The pay to win aspect. BUT it's not that bad as you would think. I was able to get 2 items to level 20 without paying a dime, and there is promised 3 items that can permanently boost item level to 30. So this means if you know what you're doing, you can boost any major role item to maximum and not have any competitive disadvantage.

But bigger issue is that once you are forced in Off-role, meaning that instead of lets say you play support, you're going to play tank, you're going to be picking 1-2 Pokemon Available in free roster or whatever you're unlocked, and then equip 0 defensive items for them.

    5. Battle preparation There's not enough time to prepare for combat, and it's incredibly difficult to do without going into the Match Ready screen to change items for each played unit. There's 3 items for passive gains, there's 1 item for active, and then you got to inform which lane you're going. It's just too much for too little time.

    5. The actual combat is pretty terrible. This could have been great game for PC, but this got released mobile controls or switch. Aiming is too hard to do right and there's just too many missclicks... which I guess could be practised...

    6. The game itself vs other franchises. This game just doesn't seem to have too much effort behind it, compared to other big Pokemon Games. It's (just like with Pokemon Go) they did the least amount of effort, least amount of innovation, least amount of joy added to the game, to just make it another milking machine for whales. (Whales are people who spend ridiculous sums of money on usually Free to Play games).

If this was lets say 15 euro purchase on PC, with full roster and reasonable systems behind it, good enough roster for me to actually care (I literally didn't give a **** about current roster), I would have been interested.

But I'm sure this game will despite it's horrible score, somehow reach billion players who all have their parents credit card to burn, just like with Pokemon Go.

You watch this ACTUAL reviews you see this game is 3.8 (or probably worse since writing of this review), that's the REAL score, not the fake score the company is pushing in Google Store with possibly deleting low scored reviews and paid reviews.

Like I said it's not that hard pay to win, but I don't think you should spend any money on this game... or if you do, only spend the maximum 19.99 to get double the income and then never put a single dime on it. Don't do it like these dumb streamers who donate 2000 euros for this free to play game to "I'm just showing how bad the system is", basically feeding them the revenue they gain from your eyeballs watching their advertisements.

This yields a stat increase from just +1 Attack to +15 (with an extra 7.5% attack speed and some damage based on missing HP% on top) for just one item. I think mid-term using just the in-game rewards it's possible to reach level 20 on your main items, but level 30 is outright impossible without the use of a credit card.

If you want to find out more about why it's pay 2 win and why everyone who claims otherwise hasn't done proper research, check out this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/oqal4o/pokemon_unite_how_pay2win_is_pokemon_unite_i_did/

Either way, really like the game in itself, but a MOBA that outright sells you an insane stat boost for your in-game characters is absolutely not worth playing long-term. Coming from someone who spent years playing LoL and Dota.

Oh, and the UI feels really unresponsive for some reason (double presses to move the cursor multiple times just don't work most of the time, as if the menus are running at 10FPS or so). Quick matches are fun for simple games, but not an ideal characteristic for strategy MOBA games. There is an optimum build for every Pokémon with the other abilities hardly ever seeing the light of day. Builds are set at the beginning of the match so you’re stuck with what is optimal and no room for counter building. Ultimately you are playing by yourself against a team that has some minor coordination, and hopefully your teammates are cooperative. Communication is possible but does not exist as all - only pings which nobody pays attention to. If you need help or need your jungle to pay attention to your lane - good luck because no amount of “I need assistance” will encourage any teammate to assist - you can’t depend on anyone. Expand

Like, I know it's just a game, but the series has meant a lot to me over the years and carries a pretty heavy nostalgia. But this? This is a new low. For starters, the idea of 'premium currency' is a trick to begin with. Why not just say in the shop that a given skin is, say, "$7.99"? Instead, they create an illusion that de-values money, into shiny little "gems" or whatever a given game might call it. THEN, back when this idea was new it was an easy conversion, like $10 for 1000 gems, but over time it's shifted, just a bit, such as $12 for 1000 gems, so that when you see something like 800 gems in-game FEELS about $8, but it actually cost you around $10. THEN, interweave it with a bunch of other in-game currencies, which further dis-associates your real money, with in-game mechanics. THEN, some items are labeled as "coins/gems" and others as just "tickets", but when you try to buy a ticket item without enough tickets, it prompts you to use gems, hiding that possibility of real money. Oh, and these items are used to increase your stats, giving you an edge over those who do not pay, praying on human susceptibility the way a casino does. THEN, all this happens in a game series typically targeted to our CHILDREN. All this seriously upsets me. The next time the pokemon company president, sitting at his desk with pokemon plushies all around, tries to tell me about the next new pokemon game, I don't know if I'll be able to look at him in the face. Business is business, but this is disgusting. Expand

That aside... this game is complete trash. Bugs and horrible servers aside, I've never seen such a mess of control/design decisions in a moba, EVER. Which is laughable because we've had how many examples of how to properly do a moba now? And tencent is just like nah, we'll do it our way.

But the most horrible aspect of this game BY FAR is the comeback mechanics. WHOOOO BOY the comeback mechanics just trivialize the entire first 90% of any match. The final 2 minutes of every match completely invalidate the entire match leading up to it, and the game does EVERYTHING IN ITS POWER to punish the team that actually fought hard to outplay the enemy for the entire game leading up until then.

Would be a kind of okay game that needs balancing so far right? yeah BUT
It's pay2Win. You can equip held items for your Mons which you can upgrade. For money or by playing the game for something around 500+ days. Since it's competitive you either cash in hard or you sit in low rankings no matter your actual skill.

I have played moba games for over a decade and I have played pokemon games for longer, but, you don’t need to be a pokemon fan to like pokemon unite, as it is primarily a moba game with a pokemon skin slapped over it. So the question is, will moba fans like pokemon unite?

The short answer is, hell no.

Pokemon Unite does not follow the traditional rules of a moba, now this is fine, perfectly fine in fact, no moba needs to. They, being the random plethora of moba makers out there, have mostly seen league and dota and then copied that success. But have gamefreak and co. made a good and different moba? No, and here’s why.

First off, this game is pay to win. While, you can play and play and play and get up to the levels of others in the game, that doesn’t prevent the fact that you can spend money, and take a shortcut, that’s what pay-to-win is, to the alternative, play-to-win option.

But excluding the monetization of the game, there are several core problems with the game in general. You are given three abilities/skills and not four compared to PC mobas, this is normal for mobile mobas, but what with the "ultimate" being on such a long cool down or charge rate, you're often stuck with two abilities, which makes combat very limiting and combos very scarce. I can’t tell if pokemon are extremely squishy, or if it’s because some others have stacked items to make it appear so, but it’s very hard to survive and function in the game when you’re being hammered so relentlessly. In traditional mobas you have minions to rely on for coverage, and turrets to rely on for shelter, but in this game, excluding the terrible regen rate on your goals, there is no safety to rely on. In addition to the goals only giving you regen effects as well as a small shield, it’s almost pointless to poke your opponents and wear them down, heavily relying on a third player to come in and change the tide.

Speaking of third players, the junglers, or speedsters to be more specific are a little on the op side. While anyone can be op with maxed out items, speedsters in general can one shot even tanks/defenders of the game, leaving you wondering, why pick them to begin with. Defenders in general are in a poor state, they aren’t very good at, well, defending. Sure they are tankier, and have cc, but it’s not enough if again, you’re getting hammered by more than one player. One defender can not prevent three players from scoring the same goal.

Most of the mechanics in the game are not done well. I get the theme of the game, but it just doesn’t work out as a moba. You have to farm to level up but then that means you’re not scoring goals, you have to defend the goal so others can’t score, but that means you aren’t farming to level up, if you’re scoring goals you’re leaving your goal unprotected, leaving enemies the option to score, and with the **** meta right now, you can’t rely on anyone.

Worst of all, something so terribly broken to the point it doesn’t even matter if you were **** all doing jack **** for the first eight minutes. If you manage to kill zapdos, your score is likely to triple, and it is likely. VERY LIKELY, mind you, to pass the opposing teams score, even if they were curb stomping you prior.

All in all the game just does not work as a competitive game, there are too many loopholes that hinder the games integrity. Even worse, gamefreak decided to partner with tencent on this, the same company who made arena of valor, the same company who ditched their own moba on the nintendo switch a couple months in. So yeah, the future of pokemon unite is not a bright one.

P.S: Do not listen to the critic reviews, most of them are not moba players and will not understand the issues with the game out right. If you're given one star food, and you've never tried five star food, then you have nothing to compare your poor experience with. pokemon unite is fundamentally, mechanically, and strategically inferior to games like league or dota by several, SEVERAL accounts, as I've listed a few reasons why already.

Overall, Pokémon UNITE is a MOBA with a lot of potential. It’s already great as a casual game with friends, but I believe with some tweaking to Zapdos and removal of the “pay for held item upgrades” option, a strong competitive MOBA lives in Pokémon UNITE. Until then, it’s hard to call it much more than an above-average entry in the crowded MOBA space.

Pokémon Unite is the first attempt at creating a MOBA with the pocket monsters – and I must admit it’s a successful one. The game is fast and intense, but also easy to get a grip on. I don’t expect it to take the esports scene by storm, but it’s very enjoyable and works great in a doctor’s waiting room or on the bus. As for me, I can’t force myself to stop playing Pokémon Unite and hope the developers will keep updating it. [10/2021, p.61]
