I have the game on PC and switch. Im rating the switch version a 5, the PC version I'd say is a 9. The switch version just crashed on me (again) mid round, super irritating. Also, it's slow, it hitches/lags and can interrupt your swing, no spectators. It's still fun (when not crashing) but overall disappointing. I got it on sale over black friday, I definitely wouldn't recommend paying full price.

PGA Tour 2k21 has arrived and is mostly on par with what I expected. The cuts that were made to have this thing run in portable mode are minimal enough that I can justify the purchase over the other home consoles. I have only played in handheld mode, which is how I play most of my games on the switch anyway. The graphics are decent enough and there are no horrid framerate drops to take you out of the experience. Of course they made cuts with some of the scenery outside the actual course of play. It is also worth mentioning while there are grandstands they remain empty with no crowds to be found in this game. This doesn't kill the immersion for me but your mileage may vary.

Mycareer mode is here just as in other 2k titles. You go through various tours and work your way up. You have adjustable difficulties that you can tweak. You can change the on screen aids as well as your opponents level of play. It Is fairly adjustable and you should be able to find the sweet spot for your level of play. My main issue with the leveling system in this mode is that your created player doesn't necessarily get better skills just better equipment. There is no strong sense of progression as a golfer that makes me feel like my player is getting better at his short game or adding yardage to my drives.

The gameplay on handheld is actually much better than I was expected. There is no option for the "3-click system" of golfing that is available in other titles. All golf shots are done with the analog sticks. Pulling back and pushing forward in a fluid motion is key to this. The joycons actually feel pretty natural with this mechanic. I would probably prefer the 3-click system on the handheld but the joycons do an adequate job so that I don't hate it and actually enjoy it. Luckily there is instant feedback for your swing to see what needs to be done.

The biggest drop for 2k here for me is something that should have been expected as it is an issue across their games. During my player mode you better have constant internet connection or your not going to progress. It is such a shortsighted error on their part when porting this to switch. Hopefully this can be patched somehow but I doubt we will see it happen. Another issue I found in Myplayer mode (which may go across other modes). Is the game would crash when loading up tournaments from time to time. It never crashed when in the middle of a round but would routinely crash while loading up the next tournament after just finishing one. I would expect this to get patched quickly.

In short this is a very playable game of golf on the Switch. The switch holds it back in terms of graphics but the performance is smooth. The faults are evident but they are not game breaking for those looking for a solid round. I look forward to diving into the course creator and attempting to make some of my local courses.

For now PGA Tour 2K21 for switch comes in at a 7/10 for me. If they patch up the online connectivity issue and the routine crashes this would easily be an 8/10.

Bottom line: pick this up in a sale, as it feels very much like a budget title.

Sometimes the computer picks an inappropriate club for you when teeing off: it seems to prefer a 3 Wood rather than a Driver even when you’re facing a very long straight fairway, and on one short Par 3, it’s given me a 3 wood to get to the hole when an iron would be far more appropriate. This can be overridden, but anyone new to golf is going to find this tough.

The graphics, however, are dire. The player models (particularly their faces) are absolutely horrifying. In many long shots there’s no shadow under the player, shadows from trees melt into view as you’re watching the ball fly through the air, the shots of the scenery between holes has awful aliasing/jaggie problems, close-up cut scenes of the player dip to below 15fps. The list is endless… this is not a good looking game at all and I can see why the developer has chosen to disable video capture (however, you can still take screenshots).

It’s also one of those awful games (we don’t see as often on the Switch) full of micro-transactions. Your player is deliberately dressed in terrible-looking clothing; any other clothing choices have to be paid for with real money.

Finally, for reasons I can’t even fathom, you need to be online to play this game… even if you’re just playing a single-player career match.

I got it for £12 in a sale… I wouldn’t pay a penny more, and I have severe doubts the inevitable 2K22 will be any better.

As a fan of the previous Golf club games, I'm having a great deal of fun with the switch version - the mechanics are an evolution of their 'flick' control method and work well with a pro controller - less so with the joycons though. Huge selection of official and user created courses on day one and the commentary / presentation are top notch. GFX are a big downgrade though with some sharp jaggies and blurry tree textures, plus slowdown during cinematics and flyby cameras (but thankfully NOT during the actual game play). After about 5 hours play, I've not experienced the crashes or assets not loading that others have seen - perhaps the day one patch helped? The biggest drawback really is the always online requirement for career play - if you plan to play hand held and don't have access to wifi / a phone hot spot link, that could be a deal breaker. I tend to play in places with wifi access so doesn't affect me but I would drop a couple of points if that weren't the case.

Overall great to play, but not a looker and the online requirement could be a big issue for some.

I love the game, really, I love the gameplay, controls, ideas etc., but yet again I'm unsatisfied with the issuing strategy. Look at the Cities Skylines or the Burnout for the Switch... Or all the PSP games back in the day. They could somehow test their products before selling. Thanks to that I don't have to download gigs of patches having a game cartridge... Thanks to that I don't have to download gigs of patches having a game cartridge... I just insert it and play. Also, even after downloading a 4 gig patch for this one I still got some graphics problems (incorrectly loaded textures or shadows, everything goes black, you have to load something else like replay, and get back so that they reload properly). So basically I'm not a user. I'm their tester. For free. Reporting bugs for them. And they even require me to do some more stuff like screenshots, in order to look into it. Man. I dislike the whole atmosphere there around it. Basically beta got issued for the users to test it... Not cool... Not for €50. Other than that would have been 10/10, since I really appreciate this game and have no further issues with it. Expand

I love this game, I really don't mind the changes to have this run smoother on Switch...if you turn off swing timing. The swing timing is so broken and literally feels up to RNG at times. The measurements in timing were either made by a time lord or a sloth, because this **** just does not work and never has. Hundreds of hours played, but never online because of how terrible swing timing is. It's embarrassing for 2k, but really, when you're just EA's garbage cousin, I guess I shouldn't expect much.

The calibration system doesn't do **** I swing fast, it's a goddamn video game, but apparently that doesn't register and all my swings are way too fast....and then you get random too slow, swinging exactly the same as always and you hook it 100 yards off the fairway just because the game sucks. Uhhh, I guess course design is okay, the player customization is fine, but god, swing timing is so, so terrible.

PGA Tour 2K21 is the best golf sim on Switch. There’s obvious room for improvement, but at its core it’s a fine game of golf. [Issue #2, p.65]

Fun but flawed. Brilliant but bugged. Delightful yet disappointing. The list of opposing adjectives that can be used to describe PGA 2K21 is a long one. In short, it’s well worth a purchase if you can overlook the current performance issues.

PGA Tour 2K21 is the perfect option for those who want to enjoy real golf on Nintendo Switch. Its MyPLAYER mode and its control adapted to all types of players will make you spend hours playing this sport. However, its technical section doesn't stand out on Nintendo Switch.
