Great visuals and soundtrack. It would have gave it 10 if it wasn't extremely difficult to complete.

The game most definitely can be lauded for its visuals and the quality of storytelling. Where it crashes and burns unforgivably, is in its gameplay direction. Played for 10+ hours.

Pros 1. Stunning visuals. Some of the best you will ever see in a 2D game on Switch. 2. Storytelling. Not many stories based on innocence are so well told. 3. Fun when not focused on platforming. Cons

    Pros
    1. Stunning visuals. Some of the best you will ever see in a 2D game on Switch.
    2. Storytelling. Not many stories based on innocence are so well told.
    3. Fun when not focused on platforming.

    Cons
    1. Powerlessness. Upgrades feel meaningless and most only contribute to movement.
    2. Endless, irritating platforming. The game is more than 85% platforming and feels absolutely infuriating as a result.
    3. Enemies over-scale to player upgrades.

Every time you think you got stronger, the enemies get 4 times stronger. Got extra life points? Now you're even easier to one-shot. Got double-jump? enemies shoot at you faster. Got more power in your attacks? Enemies got six times tougher to kill. A game that doesn't even try to give you a sense of empowerment is the absolute worst kind. It's the anathema of fun. This game has no place being listed as a must-play on Metacritic, or a 9 anywhere. I hope Ori and the Will of the Wisps does better

Un juego que me ha gustado mucho en general, destacando su apartado gráfico y sonoro. Uno de los mejores metroidvania que he jugado, aunque pensaba que habría batallas contra jefes en vez de ser puro plataformeo. Sin embargo, me he divertido mucho jugándolo. Lo recomiendo mucho.

The game did not provide a particularly good metroidvania experience nor was its platforming as good as other titles. At the same time, it has an upgrade tree that has little impact on gameplay and minimal story. It seems like the developers had grand plans for the game, but execution fell flat.

The graphics look pretty, but aren’t as good when conveying details to the player. Oftentimes it is hard to tell the difference between scenery and gameplay platforms or damaging flora. This becomes even worse during the spectacle that they made attacks. Enemy and Ori attacks are all bright lights, obfuscating everything in between the two characters. Flashy moves can be attractive, but are tiresome when the player can’t see anything occurring on screen during them.

Difficulty spikes are extreme and most of the game exists in one of those two extremes; it’s often far too easy and more rarely too difficult. This results in a game that is boring but also frustrating.

I can't explain how much I enjoyed this game from start to finish. The immersive music, the magical graphic, the challenging yet rewarding platforming. I thought it would be too difficult and I will get frustrated, but even I, with a considerable amount of deaths, I managed to complete it on Normal difficulty. Don't let anything stop you and go play this gem.

I was a huge fan of the sequel (Will of the Wisps), but find the predecessor far, far more frustrating. The visuals and music are still stunning, but the controls and difficulty are all over the place. I'm only a few hours in and have already died dozens upon dozens of times. No flow = not fun.

The Will of the Wisps was one of my favourite games of that year, but this one goes on the ash heap after only a couple of hours.

But man, this game is frustrating and nothing I would give to a child or anyone who want´s to have a good and relaxing time.

Since when is it considered good game design to have the player die over and over again? I get that this is a thing with bosses to get their sequences right. But in this game you will die every other minute. Just to get the height of a jump on spot. Just to get a landing on spot. No room for the slightest mistakes. Sometimes you don´t even see where you have to jump to. Surprise ************, there is a thorn bush. You die. Next time turn a little further to the left. But you´ll die anyway. Because surprise ************, there´s a monster pummeling you to death while you get your bearings right. Maybe next time. Just try 10-20 times and learn the sequence. And when you´re done, have fun starting all over again. Because surprise ************, the next bit is as merciless as the last one you just did. Oh, and there´s a monster pummeling you to death while you start yelling at your TV.

And buddy, I´m not yoking about yelling at your TV. Everyone in my house is so pissed by the game that they eventually start screaming at the TV and stop playing. Me included. Even my dog hates the game. If we boot it up and the music starts going, he will leave the room. Now I´m stuck with a game which no one in my house wants to play. And because of the big pile of *** that is the Nintendo eShop, I cannot return it.

Buddy, you made it this far in my review. You read about my experience, my rage and endured my rant. I feel like I have to give you something back. Here´s some advice for you: If you really want to experience the game yourself, feel free to do so. But don´t buy it on Switch. Buy it on Steam first and test it. If you enjoy being frustrated all the time… well, that´s nice for you. But don't be fooled by the demo. This is how the game got me. The demo is nice and plays well. But once the demo is over the frustration starts.

The music is fantastic and the visual style is amazing. Its beautiful.

Expect to save often (but each save cost some magic power so most times you are not able to save and will do the same segments again and again. The controls are floaty and its hard to control which will net you some extra deaths and make you doing the same thing over and over just like a kaizo game should. Expect to be angry.

Dont expect anything like a classic Metroidvania like Metroid, Symphony of the night and such. Expect more like Hollow knight. Get good or get out. I choose to get out. I want a good time, not the oposite. Avoid if you dislike kaizo games with unfair placement of pikes that kill you, difficult jumps and frustration.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful music, graphics, scene backdrop. The platforming is quick and responsive.

I REALLY wanted to love this game but surprisingly got bored of it and never finished it (very rare for me). The platforming is just barely difficult enough to be a joy-killer. Twice I got completely stuck with no clue what to do next to advance the plot and had to google what to do next.

My favorite 2 parts of the entire game so far (I quit about 80% thru) were 2 "race" scenes, one where you have to get to the top of a tree before a flood washes you away. It was incredibly challenging but also my favorite part of the game. Unfortunately, after those scenes end, there's no way to go back and replay them.

Overall: excellent game but not for everyone and your mileage may vary.

I played this after having completed the sequel which was my favourite all time game.

The emphasis is far more on platforming than combat. The platforming is harder than in Will of the Wisps, especially the chase sequences. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had played it before the sequel and in its own right its a very good game. Its just I had been spoilt with Hollow Knight

Ori and the Blind Forest was already a fantastic game, but the Definitive Edition smooths out the edges and adds in extra content that slots in comfortably and adds to both the story and the gameplay. It looks brilliant, it sounds amazing, and it plays smoothly and satisfyingly. Be sure to pick this up if you’re a fan of the Metroidvania genre and fancy a challenge in an incredibly appealing package.

The Switch's catalogue of Metroidvania titles was already impressive - though ironically it's still lacking an actual Metroid - and now its ranks have been bolstered by one of the best in recent memory. Ori and the Blind Forest is an absolute masterpiece, a beautiful story polished to perfection in both its artistic design and core gameplay mechanics. The utterly beautiful presentation and soundtrack crafts a charming and memorable world and there are more stories in that world to come as Ori and the Will of the Wisps landing on Xbox One in a few months. Hopefully, the Switch version comes shortly after.
