In the past years, I’ve seen the OlliOlli games multiple times and every time I felt they wouldn’t satisfy my Tony Hawk-like skateboarding urges. However, I really wanted some kind of skateboarding game on my Nintendo Switch so I got this game on sale.

In the past years, I’ve seen the OlliOlli games multiple times and every time I felt they wouldn’t satisfy my Tony Hawk-like skateboarding urges. However, I really wanted some kind of skateboarding game on my Nintendo Switch so I got this game on sale.

OlliOlli: Switch Stance contains two games: OlliOlli and OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood. Both games have the same gameplay, where OlliOlli 2 added the manual as a trick to combine other tricks. You try to chain the most difficult tricks together to get your high score as high as possible. Also, the gameplay is far from realistic if it comes to trick combos, but that’s what makes these games so fun.

Expect to bail a lot. OlliOlli is all about timing and more than not, your timing is off causing you to smack your face into the ground. And if you think this will happen less when you get better at the controls, think again. The better you get, the more difficult combos you’ll try, causing you to bail even more. Luckily, there are no loading screens so with a simple button press you’ll spawn at the beginning of the stage.

The controls are really easy making the game easy to learn but hard to master. You gain speed by pressing A, do any trick by holding the left stick in a certain position and release it and press B at the moment you hit the ground to successfully land your trick/combo. That last part is the hardest and most punishing. If you forget to press B or press it too late, you land awkward and lose most of your trick/combo score.

OlliOlli 1 has a charming NES-like pixelated graphics style. OlliOlli 2 notches up the graphics to look more SNES-like. The character doesn’t have a lot of details but that’s okay because this game is about skateboarding. The combination of character + skateboard does the job really well. The movements are fluent and the tricks are all very recognizable and distinguished.

OlliOlli 2 looks better than OlliOlli 1 in my opinion. The Hollywood theme is very well designed and really suits the cartoony graphics style.

If you’re into skateboarding this game is great for a quick play while on the train or just at home on your couch. The Nintendo Switch is the perfect platform for this game. It really shines in handheld mode.

What a great surprise OlliOlli: Switch Stance was for me. It is really more a platformer and this version contains both the first OlliOlli and the sequel. I beat all the Amateur levels (it was not easy) and a couple Pro levels.

    Pros:
    - Gameplay is slick, fast-paced, and fun
    - Good build up of skills and good tutorials/practice areas
    - There were 10 areas of 5 levels each and all had fun themes

    Cons:
    - Didn't like you had to 5 star to open up the Pro levels, would have preferred the stars just as achievements
    - Could of used a bit more variety, maybe some more insane platforms or unique obstacles

If you like 2d arcade games, skateboarding, and no leniency whatsoever, then I feel like you will very much like OlliOlli. I feel like $15 is a bit much, but I definitely play this game time and time again.

I read a few reviews that said this was a disgraceful mess of a game, and I completely agree. The controls are ridiculously convoluted and the word jank could have been invented for the process of landing a move. However it’s keeping me moderately entertained since I started playing an hour or so ago, although also quite angry.

The controls are kinda hard to get use to but once you mastered them, this game is a fun pixel adventure.

Really has nothing to do with skateboarding in the mechanics. Could just as easily be a panda on a jetski. Bad graphics make backgrounds mix with foreground so your only real way of knowing what is what is to well, run into it. Fun.

Glad I got it real cheap on sale, definitely not worth full price for what could easily be a mobile game.

OlliOlli: Switch Stance isn’t going to make you rethink anything you thought about them first time around — but if you thought they were great games back then, this package will serve as a nice reminder that they’re every bit as good as you may remember.

With simple controls but difficult to master, OlliOlli: Switch Stance is a terrific bundle giving you the best modern skating games around. Even if you manage to ace all of its challenges, competing against players on daily leaderboards will be sure to keep you hooked.

OlliOlli: Switch stance is an awesome combination of two great games and packed with fun content. If you’re a skateboarding fan or you just like a good sidescoller then you’ll definitely want to check this one out.
